And with that, let’s get into our first rumor of the day here, which is there’s some smoke beginning to rise regarding Odell Beckham Jr., the former allpro wide receiver and good friend of new Steelers quarterback by the way, Aaron Rogers. Uh Tom Pelisero reported earlier today that multiple teams have shown interest in OBJ who does intend to play during the 2025 NFL season. Um and even though I think a lot of people wouldn’t be too jazzed about this idea, Odell hasn’t been the most productive, especially last year in Miami and he’s dealt with some uh injury concerns throughout his career. Plus, he’s 33 years old. I do think that this is more likely than you might think. Now, I will say off the top here, OBJ is not my favorite uh wide receiver target for the Pittsburgh Steelers, but there are multiple things that could connect him to the Steelers. First of all, OBJ and Aaron Rogers are both very good friends. They’ve worked out together in the off season before. Uh Rogers has actively tried to uh recruit OBJ to both the Green Bay Packers back in 2021 before he ended up signing with the Rams and won a Super Bowl with that team. by the way. Um, and then he tried to recruit him to the New York Jets in 2023 when he went over there as well. So, they’re good friends. Um, you know, OBJ has talked about his friendship with Rogers and vice versa. So, that is a connection there. Also, OBJ has a ton of connections outside of Rogers on the Steelers roster. A ton of former uh Odell Beckham Jr. teammates currently reside here in Pittsburgh. Guys like Jaylen Ramsay who played with him in Los Angeles and in Miami. John Smith who played with him last year in Miami, Patrick Queen who played with him in Baltimore back in 2023, and then Robert Woods and Ben Skiranic also played with OBJ and filled out that wide receiver room with him when they were still with the Rams. Also, another connection that he has to the Steelers is that he is good friends with number one receiver here in Pittsburgh, DK Metaf, and they’re both Lululemon ambassadors have and have even appeared together in commercials for the Lululemon brand. So, uh, there’s a ton of connections there, guys. And also, he says that he has been talking with the Pittsburgh Steelers this off season. Um, he went on a Bill Mars podcast, the Club Random podcast, and he had some very interesting things to say regarding Aaron Rogers, the Steelers, and head coach Mike Tomlin this offseason. This is what he had to say about a month ago, guys. Love Aaron Rodgers. Love him. We’ve had conversations this off season. I won’t say that it’s not a possibility that I go to the Steelers. I won’t say that I haven’t had any communication with the Steelers. I effing love Mike Tomlin. And then he went on to say that, you know, the Steelers showed a ton of interest in him uh when he came out in the draft in 2014 and he thought he was going to be drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers that season before he got taken, of course, by the New York Football Giants. And honestly, guys, like I said, this is not my preferred wide receiver option. Uh if you’re looking to add a wide receiver too to put in front of Calvin Austin III and Roman Wilson, if you don’t have trust in those guys, there’s some other receivers out there that I would probably want to target first before I would bring in Odell Beckham Jr. Some of the reasons for that, he is getting older, 33 uh years old this year. He’s currently 32, but he will be 33 soon. Uh he does bring decent size to the table for somebody that’s 5’11. He’s 200 lb. He’s a willing run blocker. Uh he’s known for his route running and his hands. Um, you know, maybe at this point the route running and the acceleration might not be what it once was, but he’s very technically sound in that area. He’s got huge hands, so he can come down with contested grabs and stuff like that. And this offseason, he’s been working out with guys like Jabar Chase, Zay Flowers, and more during the during the offseason here. Um, and obviously has a lot of connections around the National Football League. Uh, but plain simply, guys, it was a disaster for him with the Miami Dolphins last year. you know, he he signs there kind of late in the process, kind of like we are now uh to a lot of fanfare, joining Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Wadd there in Miami and it was just a disaster season for him, man. Less than 10 total catches. He only caught half of the targets that that went his way. Uh he had less than 100 yards on the season and you know they end up cutting him in December uh before the season even got done. So it wasn’t a good season for Odell Beckham last year. So, I completely understand why Steelers fans would be extremely apprehensive about adding someone like Odell. And honestly, guys, I can’t say for sure that he’s better than a guy like Roman Wilson, who is currently slated to be that 12 personnel number two receiver type that’s going to be asked to be doing the run uh blocking responsibilities on early downs uh for this Steelers offense this year. Um, so you know, he might be I don’t know, you know, if he if we get something closer to 2023 as opposed to what we got from him in 2024, he might be better than Roman Wilson. And obviously, as an unknown entity, we don’t know what Roman Wilson is going to become this year. Uh, but I will say the the case for signing OBJ, I think there is a case to be made here. And if the Steelers do bring him in, I think it’s because of his route running ability, his hands, and he’s also a willing run blocker. uh which is something that you know he has an advantage o over when it comes to a guy like Amari Cooper, another guy that’s a free agent right now, another big body route runner type. Um you know Amari has a reputation of not really being an active run blocker and Odell Beckham Jr. that is not the case. He will give effort. He has said multiple times that his favorite plays are run blocks where he springs a running back loose for a for a big gain or for a long touchdown. Um and then also there’s the fact that you know Od Beckham Jr. not bad with the Baltimore Ravens in 2023. Maybe he didn’t meet certain expectations, but he did have over 560 yards receiving. He was more of a rotational piece that year cuz Zay Flowers and Rashad Baitman and of course the tight ends they got there um kind of took more of a front and center uh you know role in that Baltimore offense. But Beckham showed good route running ability. He showed pretty good hands. He still had a little bit of juice after the catch during that 2023 season in Baltimore. And you guys can see kind of the progression of his career over the last four years. You know, of course, he had the torn ACL in the Super Bowl when he won the Super Bowl with the Rams back in 2021. But he had a really good season that year uh with LA where you know, you had Cooper Cup who was the number one receiver there, but as a number two receiver in a pretty similar offense to what the Steelers run. Um you know, Od Odell Beckham really uh played well with that Los Angeles Rams team and had a hell of a start to that Super Bowl before he tore that ACL. did not play in 2022, but then he goes to uh Baltimore, not Miami, in 2023 there. Um, and he has a pretty decent season coming off the ACL. He didn’t look cooked. But then last year, like we talked about, uh, was just he just wasn’t a fit with that Miami Dolphins offense. And Odell, you know, who’s going to be turned 33 here pretty soon, is still looking for work in the National Football League heading into the season. And, you know, guys, at the end of the day, it wouldn’t shock me if this happens. Now, there’s other receivers I would rather go out and get, but like if the Steelers can’t get Terry McLuren, if they can’t get Tyreek Hill, who we’re going to talk about here in just a second, um, and they want to get a free agent, I could certainly see the connections with Rogers and Ramsay and all these and Patrick Queen and all the connections that he has to the Pittsburgh Steelers paying off, uh, with maybe like a veteran minimum contract that you bring him in here before the start of the season. So, what say you guys? Let me know down there in the comments section. Would you sign OBJ to a vet minimum contract today? Type S for sign or type P for pass. This is going to be the pin comment on today’s show. In just a second here, I’m going to tell you about our sponsor today at Mando. And guys, Cassie and I just got back from our annual training camp trip in Pittsburgh to go to Latroe to watch Steelers training camp. So now, a Steelers insider for the Pat McAfee Show, Mark Cabulli, has made some very interesting comments over the last 24 hours where he believes that the Steelers will potentially add a wide receiver within the next two weeks. So last night, Mark Kaboli got the got the ball rolling here with this tweet says, “Look out soon for yeet.” So if you guys don’t know what Kaboli’s deal is, he says Yeet when he’s excited for for big news, for exciting news, stuff like that. Um, so you know that tweet kind of blew up and then today he went on his podcast uh with Chris Mack and he had some very interesting things to say about the wide receiver search in Pittsburgh. This is what he had to say. I don’t think anytime within the next week, but something might be coming down the pike here. I’ll put it this way. I would not be shocked within the next 10 to 12 days that they add a wide receiver. I was under the impression that the Steelers were just going to play it out like they were right now. Uh, we have Roman Wilson, Calvin Austin. We’re going with that. I was pretty sure of that. I don’t know if I’m as sure of that anymore. And then, uh, he was asked directly about Terry McLuren because, of course, he has a trade request that’s active there with the Washington Commanders. And he said, quote, “You’re in the ballpark, but you’re in the wrong section.” So, it’s not Terry McLuren. Then, when asked about Odell Beckham Jr., who we just talked about earlier on the show, he said close. So he would indicate that the name that he’s heard is not Odell Beckham Jr. either. So you know I I think what was a little bit telling though is that he was asked about former Browns and Bills wide receiver Amari Cooper and he wouldn’t really give a straight answer to that. So it could very well be Amari Cooper because um you know maybe Kaboli thinks he’s in the same ballpark as Terry McLuren. I personally would disagree with that at this point in Cooper’s career. Um but maybe Kaboli thinks that. And then in terms of being close with OBJ, you know, they’re both free agents, so maybe that’s why that’s close. Um, and if it’s Amari Cooper, I’d be perfectly fine with that. Guys, you guys know that I’m a fan of Cooper’s game. I’m I’m a fan of his really great footwork uh and route running ability at his size. It really has been special throughout his career. And Aaron Rogers has been a big fan of Amari Cooper throughout his career. He’s he’s complimented him a number of times uh throughout his career. as early as, you know, last last time he did it was in 2023 when he was still playing with the Browns. So, um, you know, I could certainly see Rogers advocating to go out and get in Amari Cooper and I actually think that might be the more likely option here, but I do want to throw out kind of a dark horse option here that I actually think might be somewhat realistic and that is Miami Dolphins superstar wide receiver Tyreek Hill. All right, the cheetah himself might just be the target here for the Pittsburgh Steelers. Obviously, Pittsburgh has a relationship with Miami. They just executed a trade for Jaylen Ramsay and John Smith earlier in the offseason. And I do think that Hill fits the description here. I would say that Hill is quote unquote in the ballpark with Terry McLuren and could be close to OBJ because they were both with the Miami Dolphins last year. So maybe that’s the connection between him and Odell Beckham Jr. And then, you know, of course, I don’t think that it’s a coincidence here that ESPN reporter Jeremy Fowler came out with a report this week saying that multiple teams are going to be monitoring Tyreek Hill’s trade situation here over the next few months. He says, “I have talked to a few teams who are at least monitoring his future a little bit. Uh, could he be a potential trade target?” Now, I know the Dolphins earlier this summer were telling teams, “No, we’re not trading Tyreek Hill,” but they just wonder, is he going to be available? It could be wishful thinking. Maybe they want him to be available, but he’s a player. When I bring up teams, hey, who is sort of a trade target you’re watching, they bring up Tyreek Hill. So, we’ll see. He’s a big option for Tua. Uh that would be a major move if they uh did move away from him. And by the way, Fowler does have a lot of connections to the Pittsburgh Steelers. So, I would I would not be surprised at all if one of the teams he mentions is the Pittsburgh Steelers who are monitoring the trade status of one Tyreek Hill. Now, the reason why I think that this is somewhat realistic, guys, is because Tyreek Hill’s relationship with the Miami Dolphins, uh, has been tarnished a little bit. It’s been stained at the very least, uh, because last year, this is what he said after the season finale, um, that the Dolph that he wanted out of Miami. Essentially, he said, “I’m opening the door. I’m out, bro. It was great playing here, but at the end of the day, I got to do what’s best for my career because I’m too much of a competitor to just be out there. I just got to do what’s best for me and my family. if that’s here or wherever the case may be. So listen guys, he is still in Miami and earlier kind of closer towards the draft when maybe it was more likely that they would have traded a guy like Tyreek Hill, apparently they were asking for like two first round picks for him. Uh but right now it is a little bit awkward between Tyreek Hill and head coach Mike McDaniel. they’ve kind of uh thrown some jabs at each other in the media as of late. But also, Tua Tonga, the leader of that locker room in the starting quarterback for that team, says that he hasn’t fully uh forgiven Tyreek Hill for what he said at the end of last season. Tua said earlier this offseason at the start of training camp, you guys aren’t the only people that heard that. So, when you say something like that, you don’t just come back from that with, hey, my bad. You’ve got to work that relationship up. You’ve got to build everything up again. It’s still a work in progress. not just for me, but for everybody. All right, so that is, you know, some very poignant words there from the starting quarterback of the Miami Dolphins. And then there’s also the reality right now that Tyreek Hill is owed almost a $16 million roster bonus, which is due by the end of this month. All right, so that is a lot of money to dish out to somebody that, you know, Miami, a team that’s kind of uh getting close to a rebuild here, uh might not want to have in their building long term. And you know, if the Steelers take on that roster bonus and they trade for him, here’s what the cap hit breakdown would look like for the Pittsburgh Steelers. This year, the cap hit would not be that bad, guys. Just around 15 million, right? Steelers have about $36 million in cap space to work with as we speak right now. So, if you trade for Hill and you take on that roster bonus, you’re getting $15 million against the cap to get a superstar wide receiver in Tyreek Hill. Now, it does jump to almost $40 million next year, but none of that money is guaranteed. The Steelers can restructure or just straight up cut Tyreek Hill if they want to, but then you will has have to be on the hook for the pro-rated roster bonus that does kick in at the end of this month. 2027 through 2029 are void years. So, he’s slated to become a free agent in 2027 as it stands right now. And as I mentioned, guys, no guaranteed money on Hill’s deal past this season. All right? So if he if he’s not worth another kind of restructured contract with the Steelers next off season uh after this year, they can just cut bait with him for zero dollars against their cap for 2026. All right, so there’s really not a ton of risk by getting a guy in Tyreek Hill. And the Steelers also have a plethora of mid round picks that they that they’re going to be getting from compensatory picks uh because of all the players that left the Steelers this year. So, something that could work here and something that I think um both teams would maybe consider. Tyreek Hill, uh swap him out for Calvin Austin the third. He’s a younger player that could be more of a long-term option for the Dolphins. And he can fill Tyreek’s role in that offense as a smaller, speedier type of deep threat receiver. Plus, they get a third round pick, a pretty decent draft uh uh capital there from the Steelers. The Steelers are slated to get multiple third round picks in next year’s draft anyways. So, I think this is something that the Steelers would offer. And if the Dolphins really want to get rid of Tyreek Hill and they don’t want to pay that roster bonus and have that pro rate over the next three seasons after this year, I think this is something that both teams could consider and is somewhat realistic. So, let me know what you guys think down there in the comments section. Would you accept this trade for the Cheetah, Tyreek Hill, third round pick and Calvin Austin the third? Type A for accept or D for to climb. Let me know what you guys think down there in the comments section. And now before we kind of uh uh move on before we end today’s show, I do want to talk a little bit here about the Green Bay Packers because there’s been a lot of talk about potentially getting Romeo Dobs or getting Dantavian Wixs, but right now unfortunately the Packers are dealing with a lot of wide receiver injuries, not only to uh Christian Watson, who uh is going to be out for probably half the season. He might be more of a trade deadline type of target, but uh you know, Romeo Dobs is dealing with a little bit of a back injury right now. Dantavian Wixs is dealing with an injury right now. Um Jaden Reed is dealing with an injury right now. The Packers just aren’t in a place to trade one of their receivers away. So if you were hoping for a Romeo Dobs trade before the season start of the season, I don’t think that that is too realistic. In fact, I think trading for Tyreek Hill might be more realistic than any Packers receiver at this point in time. And some other wide receiver options that are out there, like we talked about, Amari Cooper is a very uh realistic option here. Gabe Davis, they did bring in Davis for a free agency visit. So, we’ll see on that. I think Adam Thielen is a name to keep your eye on, especially if the Panthers like some of their younger receivers like Jimmy Horn Jr., Jaylen Coker that they have on that roster. Kendrick Bourne of the New England Patriots is one to keep your eye out for as well. He and then Trey Palmer and John Mechy. I would say everyone on the right side of your screen right now, guys, are are are players that could be cut from their current NFL teams and could be potential poach opportunities at the end of the preseason. I’ll also throw one more name in there, guys. Quinton Johnston from the Los Angeles Chargers. Um, you know, former first round pick, really good yak threat, really big body, kind of the type that Arthur Smith likes. And they just added Keenan Allen uh in free agency over there in LA. Plus, they have two young uh type of receivers in Quinton Johnson’s role in Trey Harris and Keandre Lambert Smith, both of which have had really good camps. So, I could certainly see Quinton Johnson of LA potentially being an option via trade as well for the Pittsburgh Steelers. So, predict it for me down there in the comments section. Will the Steelers add a wide receiver before the start of the season? And if so, which one do you think it’s going to be? Do you think it’s going to be OBJ? Do you think it’s going to be Tyreek Hill? Do you think it’s going to be Amari Cooper? Let me know what you guys think down there in the comments section. Me personally, I know who I’m hoping for. I’m hoping for the Cheetah. And that’ll be it for today’s edition of Steelers Talk. Thank you guys so much for making it to the end of today’s show. I’ll see you guys tomorrow. And until then, here we go, Steelers. [Music]
