DETROIT RED WINGS NEWS AND TRADE RUMORS: KYLE CONNOR TO DETROIT | OILERS TARGETING WINGS GOALIES

Yo, what is up everyone? Welcome back to another episode of Hockeytown Rundown. You’re here with me, your beautiful host, Zach, joined by his beautiful guest Nick Harrington over from Hockeytown West podcast. What’s up, GR Hockey Guy? Not much. You know, we just got done talking to Mr. Amadeus Lombardi last night. That was a ton of fun. Yeah, that was our third time with him. You know, you don’t think you’ll ever get anything more out of him and then it’s just like it’s been a nice progression throughout his career of like when he started and then the second and the third I’m like there’s no way we’re going to get him next year. Like he’ll be rings property at that point. So, it’ll be uh it’ll it’ll be tough to try to reconnect with him. But it’s uh last the last episode was probably my favorite with him, just the stories that he was able to that he shared with us. So um yeah, if you haven’t checked that out, check that out. Nick is correct. If you haven’t checked out that episode yet, you can find it on YouTube. It’s also on Spotify. You guys are on Apple, too, correct? Yeah, right. Apples are probably our biggest one. Oh, nice. And then where can everyone find you online? We are Hockey Town W Pod. That’s their only tag on everything. So, Instagram, threads, Facebook, blue sky, Twitter, if it’s out there, we’re on it. I think we just haven’t started on Only Fans yet. So, can’t find us there. Can’t find us there either. Can relate on some level at least there, good buddy. What do we got in store today? Well, we got Red Wings news and rumors going around. It is the offseason. It’s the data of the offseason, but got some stuff to talk about during this midweek episode. And thank you for joining us once again if you are returning, if you are brand new. Thanks for stopping by. We truly do appreciate it. If you are viewing or listening to us on YouTube, hit that subscribe button, hit the thumbs up, hit the notification bell. You can also watch and listen to us on Spotify and then listen to us on Apple Podcast as well. Rate us a five stars. Hit that follow button and let’s get underway, Nick. And to start off, there’s been some goalie rumblings going on and it’s actually the prospects within the Detroit Red Wings system and it involves the Edmonton Oilers via Cam Robinson. The Oilers goalie search. They are looking a little longer term. I was told they’ve contacted Detroit. I believe the first person they asked about was Trey Austinine. That was a non-starter. They have Sebastian Kosa sitting there. Initial thoughts on that? That’s smart. go after Trey, you know, uh, already buddies with Isaac Howard. You don’t really know his potential or what his ceiling is yet. You go to him, you’ve already kind of have an idea of what Kosa’s doing, right, with in the AHL and kind of where his ceiling is at because you have a lot more data. So, uh, you know, going to trade, that’s it’s smart smart on Edmonton’s side. It is smart. I get it for the long-term aspect of it, but is it really considering that you have Kosa, which which is mentioned right there, that he’s just sitting there, he’s already gotten AHL action. He’s seen the NHL at least for one game as that fantastic record in the NHL as well. But what do they have to offer, Nick? Almost next to nothing. They can give us Isaac Howard. I Yeah, Isaac Howard, but I I think if that was going to be a possibility, he would have, you know, they would have worked something out beforehand, right, with him uh with Tampa. So, I don’t I mean I don’t know if that is really a route. Um I saw some reports today on like Seavoi, you know, another center for us. I I think if you were to make a trade, like I just so I’m on the same page like I don’t want a trade to happen between these two. I don’t want to see any of these goalies being shipped out because I really do see the vision that Steve has for this is he’s got this goalie, he’s got Trey, you get him through, get him some games in the NHL and then you can kind of make a decision on them. I get that the the trade return could be big um because they’re they’re really unknown, right? You don’t have enough data, but um I think you know like maybe draft picks if they were to trade it, right? Let’s play the other angle. Like if they were to trade like Seavoi, a goalie would have to come back or because we don’t really have a whole lot of goalies in our system. You people joke but we we we really don’t. I think for Trey Augustine, you’re getting a plus first. Kosa, I’m not exactly sure they’re going to be able to get back exactly what you spent to get him. Although it is the Edmonton Oilers and they’re looking to take that risk at a younger goalender to utilize in their system now. in the future. So, there is still that possibility. But your overall thoughts on what you potentially would like to get for Trey Augustine or Sebastian Kosa? I mean, what if we got a first a Jake Walman, you know, like just to complete the circle, right? Um Yeah. I mean, I it it’s so tough cuz goalies are voodoo. They say it every year and it’s just like there’s just so much unknown and they take so long to develop and it’s it’s such an important position. Like I I feel like what since Steve’s been here, one, we draft a goalie every year, but two like have have we really had consistency in the pipes? Not really, right? Like it’s been a different goalie every year and then about Christmas time we ship him off to GR with us. So we started with Nidelovich that was up in Detroit did really well. Berttop by Christmas set up to GR and then it was Billy Huso. Same situation set down to GR. I feel like there was another guy too that was there that came down. So it’s just we haven’t had the consistency. We’re finally getting to a point where these guys are coming through. I I would rather us keep up just because I don’t want Steuart Skinner back like over here or Cam Picker over here. Like those are their two goalies that they have. Like it’s it’s not going to move the needle or buy time for one of the other two goalies to come up and take over the net. I like the route of doing a Swayman and Allmark situation here in Detroit. Kosa and Trey. I 100% agree with you. I think that that’s the route overall that Steve Eisermanman would like to entertain the most only because like you mentioned the Detroit Red Wings haven’t had steady goal hand goalending tandem in years probably ever since what Jimmy Howard and Chris Osgood. Yeah. So with that Yeah. You looked at the draft picks that the Edmonton Oilers have and the only good prospects that they could trade is Isaac Howard and Matthew Zavoy. Isaac Howard they just got Matt Zavoy. Not sure if they want to move on from him. They both come in relatively cheap as well. And then you mentioned the goalending. I don’t want either of those two coming back to the Detroit Red Wings. No, thank you. Although, would it be out of the realm for the Edmonton Oilers to run with three goalenders? Probably not. Not. I mean, it like Pickard coming back would make sense cuz he was here before. So, it would be an interesting take. Um, but yeah, it’s such a weird position for Edmonton because like they haven’t been able to figure it out in the net either. and it’s the probably the one thing that’s holding him back from winning a uh you know a Stanley Cup is a great goalender and they had a chance to get Gibson and they they decided not to. So I I just they they’ve got nothing. They’re kind of stuck. I mean it’s it’s like a it’s a Ken Holland situation all over again. That’s like the ghost of Ken Holland never left. Even going backwards further to that where they could have gotten John Gibson, they also could have gone out and gotten someone like Ascarov and traded Philip Broberg instead of losing him. Yeah. I mean, they they had options and now it’s just like it’s like the kid that procrastinates and it’s like, “Hey, the homework is due and now I got to find a goalie like 3 weeks before the season starts.” Like, what are we doing? I I just I don’t know because at the end of the day if they don’t figure this out the issue is they’re going to lose Conor McDavid, right? I would agree with that. Like you go to Can you get to three finals and and still not win it? You know, can they can they get back there this year on the goending that they have? That’s going to be so tough. They lost a little scoring up front, but you replace that essentially with Isaac Howard who comes in a little bit younger, but unproven in the NHL. You don’t know what he’s going to be able to do for you. So, a lot of question marks surrounding the Edmonton Oilers for sure. But let’s talk about another MSU player. Since we’re on that topic, let’s talk about Red Savage, whose sign date is actually in two days, August 15th, 2025. He has no current contract until his rights expire here. In 20 games last season, put up five goals, six assists, for 11 points for Michigan State University in the NCAA. Does Red Savage also just want to go to Edmonton as well? Does Edmonton just want to go full-blown MSU party mode over there? You think? Um, I don’t know what I don’t know where Red’s thinking. Um, I guess I want to ask you as well, what do you think Steve Eerman’s thinking with someone like Red Savage, who wore the sea for MSU last season? He’s coming off an injury uh plagued season for the team. Overall, I thought he was going to be a fine prospect for the Detroit Red Wings. He was a later round draft pick for them. But what’s Steve Eisman thinking? What’s Red Savage thinking next? So Steve’s been asked this and he pretty much said this is this is a Horov situation. Uh he goes, uh Horov is working on this deal with Red. Um he’s got two days to sign. Uh I follow Red on Instagram. He’s been at weddings. He’s been golfing. He’s been enjoying the offseason. as hockey players do. Yeah, as as hockey players do. My thinking on it is that he wants a two-way contract, you know, a Detroit Red Wings contract. Um, you know, a two-year, you know, a two-way contract. Probably my guess would be maybe something close to what Howard got or an ELC. Um, on that side, they my guess, and I’m just guessing. I I I really don’t know. Um, so don’t take any of this for word, but my guess is Detroit’s a little bit more hesitant on the injury and they want to provide him a a Griffith’s contract. That’s my guess and that’s where the holdup is ultimately. I don’t think he ends up signing here. He’s got two days to sign. It’s down to the wire. I Where would you see him in the lineup with Grand Rapids anyways? currently as it would sit if he were to join the team as of tomorrow if he signed. Yeah, that’s a good question. My guess is he’d probably be second or third line. He’s a grinder, dude. He’s uh he’s like a Carter Maser tough guy. Um gritty, big. He’s a huge dude, too. He’s physical. So, I watched him at state. Yeah. I don’t know if you watched that video of Spin Chicklets going to MSU, checking out the arena, and that was Red Savage giving him the tour over there. He’s a well spoken big body kid like you mentioned. Yeah, like we could we definitely could use him. We could definitely use him here. I just the way things are folding, I just don’t foresee it happening. Um and I, you know, you’ll release this tonight, tomorrow, and then he signs the next day. So, like it could happen. I just I think the chances are going slimmer and slimmer as the days go by. Um and I was like really like we’ve been pumped. I’ve been pumped about this guy for two years now. like I was excited that he’ll be here. Um obviously like the injury kind of cut it his season short. I just like how and the number his numbers available here too. 21 like it just come on like we just got to get this deal done. So it just makes sense. It just makes sense. Um so I I think that I think that’s what the holdup is. I think he wants a two-way he wants a Detroit contract and they’re offering him a GR contract. I think that’s where the impass is to be honest. That’s what I got. Well, Red, if you’re watching this, hopefully it’s on the 13th because we’re recording this on the 13th, the evening of you signed on the 14th, and we can all laugh back at this portion of this episode. But moving along, let’s go ahead and touch on some trade rumors potentially or UFA rumors going into 2627. Nick pervali, he has mentioned that Kyle Connor is moving out of Winnipeg. Not so fast, but Detroit would make a lot of sense. goes into a spiel and we made a quote tweet about that. Kyle Connor to Detroit, the googly eyes and the octopus. And then that Red Wings fan at Coldstone Gaming on Twitter responds with this. Take this as you will. I play roller hockey with Kyle’s stepbrother. I jokingly asked him since he’s becoming a free agent after next season if he could get him to sign in Detroit. He laughed and said, “There’s definitely some interest here.” And it’s a possibility. Nick, I got a few questions for you. I’m going to rattle them all off. Hopefully, you can keep up with me and you can answer them all in a straight line for me. Oh god, dude. That’s already too much. What would it mean to you if Kyle Connor came to Detroit? Where do you insert him? I probably already know the answer to that. Would you expedite the process of getting Kyle Connor via trade and try to extend him for eight years or wait for him to come to unrestricted free agency July 1st and only be able to sign him for a six-year deal because of the new CBA that will take into effect. All right, let’s start. So, lots to unpack. I know. Sorry, buddy. And you know, I have ADHD, so it’s tough here. So, I don’t agree with the trade route. I get the angle to be able to sign for longer, but do you really want to side somebody that long? Kyle O’ Conor has been playing in the NHL technically since the 201617 season. He was drafted in 2015, round one, 17th pick overall by the Winnipeg Jets. And so, yeah, he’s had plenty of seasons. He is 28 years old. So he will be 29 towards the end of this season. So you would be signing him at the age of 29 or trading for him at the age of 29. And Nick, I mean, let’s be honest, adding someone like a Kyle Connor could make sense. I see the hesitation with the age. Obviously, me personally to answer the question I asked, I would prefer the six years and not have to give up something just to get him. Correct. That’s where I’m at. I don’t want to give up anything. It’s hard for me because I love the prospects. I cover the prospects. So, it’s like there, you know, there’s some that I’m ready to, you know, trade. I get that. Uh, but I don’t like, could he keep this up for another six years, 40 goals? We see plenty of other players do it. Even if that dwindled down, obviously looking at these numbers right now, it’s not consistent 40 goal scorer, but very much so consistent 30 goal scorer and stays relatively healthy as well. Only a few seasons there where he’s missed a handful of games. 23 24 was the most time that he’s missed in his NHL tenure and that’s only 17 games. So, it’s really not much that you’re missing out on. And then you have Alex Brink as I would rather take the chances of trying to side him in the dur free agency if he doesn’t resign with Winnipeg. It makes sense to go after him. One, 40 goal score. Two, he’s from Michigan. So that’s Steve’s other bullet point right there. Like if you’re from Michigan and you played at Michigan, like we’re we’re going to try to recruit you. Uh so I mean it makes sense to go after him. So the way that you would want it to be is Calcon Connor left, Larkin center, Raymond right, second line is De Brinkat, Casper Kane. If you get Kane to play in 2627 for you. Yeah, we’re we’re kind of thinking uh when he’s done, we probably put Emma Lombardi in that spot. Hey, if Ammo wants to pop off this season and serve himself as a top six player for the Detroit Ronings this year, please by all means do so. We would absolutely love that. Ammo, if you are watching this episode, thanks for stopping by. We truly do appreciate it, buddy. Come on our show as well. We would love to interview you as well. Yeah, even talking about it too, Nick, looking at these stats, the NHL goal leaders since the 2020 season. At number 10, Kyle Connor, 179 goals. And what is that? That’s 364 games played. And then point totals in 364 games. He has 381 points. That’s someone I would want to add onto the Detroit Red Wings. Oh, for sure. I just don’t think we have enough. Like even if you wanted to do like go down the trade path route, who who are you trading that’s not Nate or Marco? The other thing is is that looking at Kyle Connor’s contract coming in at just under $7.2 million, he comes in a 10 team no trade list with a modified no trade clause. So he does have some sort of protection. However, he could be traded to a team that’s not the Detroit Red Wings. Maybe he likes what they have to offer and then signs with them and then we’re so at that point. So, is it more real realistic for the Detroit Red Wings to sign him an unrestricted free agency or to or is it more realistic for us to go out and get him via trade to then be able to sign it? I say free agency. I think he I think they let they he either resigns there or he turns around and he leaves. He walks and he comes. Would it look bad on Winnipeg to let him walk for nothing? Of course. Oh, of course. You’ve got a top 10 goal scorer. So, the final question to wrap up this episode, why wouldn’t they trade him then quite like that the Colorado Avalanche did with Mo Reman? you. We could see that crazy. We could see that craziness happen, too. I mean, nobody thought Mico was gonna get traded and then he gets traded twice in one season. Like, absolutely bonkers. Can I say bonkers? You did say bonkers. Can I say that on here? You could say that on here. Absolutely. I’ll say it, too. Bonkers. It’s absolutely bonkers. And with that being said, Nick, I think we can go ahead and wrap up this episode. Let us know down in the comments what you think about the Kyle Connor rumors in the comments saying that there is interest of him coming to Detroit if he does hit unrestricted free agency. 1. I love my Red Wings #1. But I have a hard time calling Detroit hockeytown. Especially when you haven't sniffed a playoff game in 9yrs. Get playoffs absolutely hockeytown.

  2. I would not trade for him and give up assets if he truly wants to come back home and start his family when his first child is born in March then get him in free agency
