Training Camp Live: Wrapping Things Up | Dallas Cowboys 2025

[Music] Welcome back to Training Camp Live. Our final episode here from Oxnard, California. Tommy Y alongside Patrick Nosc Walker. Let’s go ahead and get right into some team period. We’re working in getting close to the red zone. Not quite the red zone, but a shortened field here for the Cowboys in this team drill. This is the first play of it as Dak Prescott goes under center. Javvante Williams line up in the backfield off of play action. Prescott looking over the middle and he’s got Jaylen Tolbert inside the 15 down to around the 10. Some good protection there from the offensive line and that’s not a statement Tommy that I can say I’ve uttered frequently today. The defensive line has been having a day against this O line. Yeah, defense has had a good day. Maris Bell had an interception earlier on Joe Milton. Played the route really well and Preston Fant just wasn’t looking for the ball in that specific instance as Prescott lines up in the shotgun on this play as Jake Ferguson motions to the inside. Prescott with all day again. Now the pocket collapsing would be a sack by Sam Williams as Cavante Turpin gets the check down from Dak. All right, back to it now as the offense moves deeper and deeper into the red zone. The last play was a checkown pass to Javvante Williams. Now both sides will clear the field. We saw this Patrick when this drill started and then both teams kind of ran out there kind of simulating what seems like a game field as you see right now on the far sideline. Joe Milton with Brian Shottenheimer in his ear as the second team offense comes out. And I do love that they’re integrating this, like you said, as an as it’s a game simulation because this is going to help them on game days to avoid unnecessary penalties. You get onto the field as quickly as possible. You get your play called in, you get in your set, your stance, and you get ready to go. Brian Shanheimer has been very clear that he is not a big fan of pre- snap penalties and procedural penalties, and that was certainly an issue for the Cowboys in their preseason opener last Saturday. trying to take measures to avoid that now as Milton on play action. Rolls out and hits John Stevens in the flat. Shamar James comes flying over, flying through the sideline, too, as he makes that play. Good decision there by Milton. Just dump it off. Good touch play. Uh, and as far as John Stevens Jr., he’s starting to kind of come on, but you need to see more from that young man coming off of that second torn ACL. He only has two preseason games to kind of make waves in a a tight end’s depth chart that is kind of stacked as it stands. Milton now in the shotgun. He’s got Duce Vaughn lined up to his left and changing things up now at the line of scrimmage after the hard count. Deone Clark land lining up right over the center. Now he’ll kind of drop back a little bit. Vaughn gets the hand off. Looks like Dia would have had the tackle there had this been live, but Deuce able to maneuver his way up the middle and into the end zone. And that’s exactly where my eyes went. Pre- snap was Big Jay Toia. Uh did not have a great outing in the preseason debut for himself against the Los Angeles Rams, but has been building a good camp. So, let’s see if he can bounce back against the Ravens. But on that play, like you said, Tommy, if this was live action, I think he gets Duce Von down there. Now, Phil Mafa, who’s had a really strong day today in the back field. He gets the carry and patient running there up the middle before Demone Clark gets his hands around him. But you’re seeing it kind of slowly start to click for Phil Mafa. It seems like Patrick, it is. And what I like, what I’m seeing from that rookie is we already know that he’s a big physical back. He can bully. He can do the dirty work as far as running through the dirty gaps. But what we’re also seeing uh is vision. We’re seeing quickness. We’re seeing decisiveness. We’re seeing we can he can get up and down as opposed to trying to just get east and west. Now down to the seven yd line. Looks like they’re simulating third and goal here. Eyes on Maris Le a foul here. Milton going through his progressions. It would have been a sack for Perion Winfrey and it’s nearly an interception for Israel Muamu. That one bounced off his hands and Jaylen Craropper almost hauled it in with one hand, but that time Perryon Winfrey shoots right through the gap unblocked towards the end there and would have had a sack on Joe Milton as Dak Prescott and the starting unit prepares to come back in here. And Perion Winfrey, he flashed on more than one occasion against the Rams. So, you love to see him continuing that. Um, that potential sack notwithstanding looking at Joe Milton, I like to see him going through the reads as he did. Throw is a little bit late. Israel Muquamu definitely wants that back. Fantastic coverage. He got two hands on the ball and you know he wants to come down with that interception. Yeah, you have to come down with that interception if you’re Muamu there. But nonetheless, a pass break up on third and seven setting up a field goal will certainly do for the defense. Prescott back on the field with the offense lined up in the shotgun. Jake Ferguson in motion. He gets a head start at the line of scrimmage. They look up the seam and it’s Luke Scoon Maker right there for the touchdown. That is the kind of magic that you missed seeing from the Cowboys offense last season. Those seam routes from Dak Prescott to his tight ends have been magic. Obviously, pre-lukemaker, it was Jake Ferguson as the recipient. Still very much a recipient of that. But even before Dak Prescott went down with injury last season, Tommy, you saw a little bit of a disconnect from deck to schoolmaker on those very same seam routes. Looks like they’re sharpening that up now. Prescott loves throwing that route and certainly not afraid to do so. and he’s done it at a high level over the course of his career, especially when he’s had Ferguson and the likes of Jason Whitten, too. Prescott pocket collapsing now rolling, firing to the end zone. And there is Jake Ferguson. Say his name and he shall appear. Jake Ferguson, the recipient of the touchdown immediately after Luke Skoomaker gets one from Dak Prescott. these tight ends. Going back to what I was saying about John Stevens, he’s going to have to make some waves because the top three spots seem locked or at least the top two. Reverend Span Ford, he’s been dealing with some injuries. So at opportunities for John Stevens Jr. just needs to take advantage. And so at the two yd line now are the Cowboys. Looks like it’s second and goal on this simulation. Brock Hoffman in its center. We’ve seen him get some run in place of Cooper BB. No injury news there. just trying to get a guy some reps as that time Javvante Williams scores easily. Nate Thomas with a good job there of kind of paving the way on the left side. Absolutely. Little bit of a road graater came out of Nate Thomas there. And I tell you Nate Thomas has had a very solid camp particularly in the absence of Tyler Gen with that injury. I’ve seen Nate Thomas hold his own against some very talented guys. Dante Fowler, Sam Williams, Donovan Rocku. Although as Rocku is having quite the day today himself, they liked him for a reason. Patrick Brian Shanahan talked about him even before Gayton went down. So, not really too surprising that he’s played this way given what the staff was saying about him. Now, they’ll simulate third and goal from the two. Prescott in the shotgun will look to throw. Goes quickly and it’s intercepted by Sam Williams. There’s a sentence you don’t hear often. And Sam Williams taking off full speed. That might be the fastest he’s run a year. And he goes pick six with the entire defense behind him to celebrate. cribed, break out the pacifiers, the bibs, and he’s running into the parking lot now. I don’t know if we’re gonna see Sam Williams again today or that. Love it. I tell you, if there were any questions, any at all, and there should not be to this point, any at all, if Sam Williams’s knee is feeling great, take one look at that play. Not only the drop back and coverage, but the fullon sprint to take it down and finish the play all the way through the end zone. Speaking of healthy knees, uh maybe the Cowboys training staff clutching their throats a little bit as the Marvian Overshon also sprinted full speed with him and she’s done several times and it’s obviously a very good sign, but at the same time, it’s one of those no no yes moments. I tell you, your star linebacker when it comes to DeMarian overshould not be champion at the bit more than he is to get back on the field. But to your point, steady as she goes, my friend. Steady as she goes. Joe Milton in the second group out there on offense again as Duce Vaughn gets the late handoff here and Kan Hall laying the lumber a little bit there with the that’s the definition of a thud tackle in these practices that you want to see there. You do love to see the physicality especially being that this is the final padded practice here in Oxnard. Um you know there were questions on if the Cowboys were going to turn down their physicality especially last week late last week saw some guys leave practice and battle some injury but Brian Shottenheimer credit to him. He said he wants this team to build calluses and you’re seeing a lot of that here today. Now simulating second and goal. Josh Kelly in motion across the line of scrimmage here with Milton in the shotgun and Phil Mafa to his left. Milton looking firing and it is caught. Tawn Holden with another contested catch and he gets in the face of Kan Hall on that play. Holden talked a little bit yesterday about how he takes pride in being a possession guy and kind of a safety blanket for quarterbacks when they just need to get the ball out and he shows why there. Listen, another day, another play made by Tan Holden. This young man as an undrafted free agent is really making some waves. He’s going to make things difficult when it comes time for those 53man conversations. Now, Malik Davis in the game at running back Lyall Collins at right tackle. Early start here for the offense. This is a false start, so none of this would count. It would have been a sack for James Houston, who has put together a really good camp kind of quietly. Patrick, I think the guy they picked up early on after a try out, a successful try out, and he’s been playing well for him. He has. And I tell you, when it comes to James Houston, if this were a situation similar to last training camp when the Cowboys were seeking defensive endepth, you’d hear much more of James Houston. But unfortunately, he’s kind of buried on a defensive ends chart that’s so stacked with talent. But take nothing away from him. He is absolutely doing it out here in Oxford. Third and goal here from the three for Joe Milton in company. Looks towards the end zone and a diving attempt from Ryan Fenoy. There is incomplete. Christian Matthew in on the coverage. And so that will do it for us here from Oxnard, California training camp live. This was an absolute blast all training camp live and hopefully we can get you some more for the later training camp practices back in Fris at the Star. Until then for Patrick Nosy Walker and Alex Delay behind the camera, I’m Tommy Y. We’ll see you guys again here soon. [Music]

On the final episode of Training Camp Live from Oxnard, Tommy Yarrish and Patrik Walker get a look at the Cowboys working in the redzone, highlighted by an interception and ensuing celebration from defensive end Sam Williams.
