San Diego Padres stay hot & are now tied with Dodgers in NL West – Sean Casey REACTS | MLB Network
Hey, uh let’s go to San Francisco. Padres’s trying to take advantage. Uh Robbie Ray just loses control of the ball. That’s a B and a run scores and it’s one- nothing San Diego. Second inning. Jose Glacius. That’s his first home run of the year. His first homer since September 20th, 2024. And this one gives the Dodgers, excuse me, the Padres’s a three to1 lead. Fourth inning. Jake Croninworth left on left pass the diving Casey Schmidt. The bad guy raiser Raone Lauriano scores and it’s four to one San Diego. Fifth inning. Will Adamis up at the tying run. Runners at first and second. David Morgan strikes him out looking. Padre’s bull just lights out. They’ve got so many arms at their disposal. Jackson Merrill Padres’s go on to win by the final of 5-1. Uh Dom Smith did extend his hitting streak to a career best 15 games, albeit in a loss. So look at this as we wake up on a Wednesday morning. The Dodgers and Padres’s are now tied at top the NL West. And oh by the way, they’re going to play each other this weekend. Who wins the West? Sean Casey decided right now. What is it? August 13th. August 13th. I I can’t give up on the Dodgers just yet, but wow, the Padres’s are coming and they’re really good. You know, I think when you look at this when you look at this team with the Padres’s, you know, they had the best bullpen already. Then they go get Mason Miller. It’s been locked down. It’s so true because I two days yesterday it was Adam Morhan Suarez. The day before it was a Strada Miller just mix in Mason Miller Miller, right? And Suarez and the bullpin options. And you know, case in October you’re shortening the game. your starting good start in the fourth and the fifth and you Darvis has pitched pretty well too recently. Yeah and that’ll be huge if Darvis can come back. I mean when you look at the options here and the stats on these guys I mean you don’t want to see Suarez at the end. Mason Miller throws the hardest in the game. Adam has been totally locked down. Mora Hone all these guys Estrada Morgan Peralta I mean they’ve all been so good. And then you know you look at the rotation too when you know when you’re talking about Paveta has been great. Kings coming back and it’s going to settle in there. CE has been, you know, punching guys out a little up and down. Nester Darish is the guy you really want to get going, but you said it, uh, Lauren with with shortening the game. When when you’re a hitter and you’re a lineup and you have to fit navigate that bullpen at any time, it’s a real problem. That’s the reason the Padres’s have have had this surgence uh, is because of that bullpen. As a hitter, are you prepping for all of them or No, you can’t, right? You’re just I just got I got to prep the toe. Can you throw me a mistake one time, please? Throw me a mistake I can hit. Don’t miss it, please. Uh the Dodgers are 5-2 against the Padres’s this year. So they’re close to securing that tiebreaker which could be important. And beginning Friday, these two teams will play each other six times over the next 10 days. It’s going to be fun for us the fans. Hey, if you can’t get enough of this NL West race and if you love a good homecoming, you ready or what? Show Otani back in Anaheim pitching for the Dodgers on his former mound. It’s all on MLB Network today. What are we thinking? Robert said it three for five, eight scoreless. There we go. both. I mean, the Dodgers are only one game in front. The Mets have fallen well well behind, six games behind the Phillies at this point. Which one has a better opportunity? Well, the first of all, I’m going ask you this. Do you think the Dodgers will win the division? And then if they get to the playoffs, do you think the Dodgers by far have a better chance to make a deep run over the Mets? Uh, I think they have a better chance to run a a deeper run than the Mets, but I think the Padres’s win the division. So, kind of go kind of going through that. You know, I worry I I worry a little bit about the Mets rotation. Um I I think they’ll turn things around. They’re not what they won and nine in their last 10. I I know they’re not playing well. Um and I’ll ask you this, AJ. What do you do when your star players aren’t hitting? Right. Alonzo last 20 games hitting 190. Lindor hitting 168. NMO’s hitting .05 in the last 20 games. I mean, I’ll ask you, what do you do to turn it around? Juan Sodto is hitting 202 in the last 20 games. Those are your star players. So, normally when one slumps, the others are carrying you. Now, all of a sudden, none of them are hitting at the same time. I mean, my guess is they’re going to turn it around and get hot and then they’ll win eight out of nine and and turn things around. But I’ll ask you, how do how do you fix those guys when in August they’ve had a 20 game slump? Um, bench them, bench them all, Jim. Send them down. No. Trade them? No. No. Um, well, there used to be Mark Bark Grace used to have a great idea, but we can’t do that anymore. Um, so I I honestly don’t know. I don’t You just hope they all get hot because like you said, normally they don’t all get cold at the same time. So, yeah. I just I’m just I want to go back to the other thing you said. You think the Padres’s are going to win the West. How disappointing for Dodger fans, Dodger organization, Dodger everything if the Padres’s somehow win the West. Yeah, of course. Um, I I think couple couple of things with the Padres’s. They made the back end of that bullpen so ridiculously dominant that if they get into the seventh, eighth, the ninth with the Dodgers, and they’re going to play them two weekends in a row, uh, this weekend in LA, the next weekend in San Diego, and this is going to be playoff baseball in August. I can’t wait. I’m so excited for this. But that bullpen, you know, you watched them last night, right? When you get Miller and Suarez in those last two innings, ball game’s over. Um, and so and that Estrada is dominant, Adam’s dominant. I mean, that bullpen is so deep and strong and it’s so much better than the Dodgers. And I think that’s going to be a huge factor. The other thing is the Dodgers rotation. It It’s good. It’s solid. Some of it’s getting healthier, but they’re not as elite. And on the other side, King just came off the IIL. We’ll see how he looks in his second start off. Um, Darvis last night looked great. He was throwing his 12 pitches, including the kitchen sink. didn’t walk anybody, punched out six and looked really good. Um, and then, you know, the biggest problem with the Padres’s has been the bottom third of the lineup, you know, just wasn’t producing all year. AJ Pler went out the deadline and said, “No problem. Here’s Raone Lauraniano. No problem. Here’s Ryan O’Harn.” Right? And all of a sudden, Lewis Arise has gotten hot after a relatively slow start even for him. And now you’re getting production up and down the lineup. And in fact, in the last 20 days, um, Xander Bogarts has been their best power hitter, right? He’s got five home runs over that time to to lead the team. So, their lineup now top to bottom is there and the bullpen is is unbelievable. And, of course, the vibe at Petco is is tremendous as well. So, yeah, I think it’s going to be a fun race between the Padres’s and Dodgers. I think it’ll go to the end. I’m going to pick the Padres’s to win because of the the bullpen and the depth of the lineup now. Uh which I think AJ corrected. Then in terms of the Mets, look, I think they get the last spot over the Reds cuz I think I I they’re not as bad as what they’re showing right now and I I think they’ll they’ll turn around. I think they’re better than Cincinnati because the lineup should be much better than Cincinnati’s and I think that’ll be the difference down the stretch. But in the postseason, if I had to rank the playoff teams, if the Mets get that sixth spot, I would rank them sixth out of the playoff teams. All right. You said about the Dodgers not winning the West, you know, it’s going to be close, but isn’t that the worst case scenario in the sense that a team that wants to play the least amount of games because they’re a team that’s built around a lot of guys that get hurt, needing to play an extra wildcard series could be the worstc case scenario for them. And did the Dodgers go too allin on guys that are essentially injury risks and now they could be up against needing to play extra games to get to where they want to be. Yeah, I think that’s fair. I mean, you know, Andrew Friedman has always tried to offset those risks by building so much depth, right? I mean, to think of the injuries they’ve had to 12 starters and now to still be in first place today. I mean, how many teams could ever do that, right? Especially when the names that were down were like Snell and Glass now and Sasaki and you’re still in first place today. That’s that’s incredible. So, they tried to build it with depth and, you know, the one thing the Dodgers just need to make sure is that their starting pitchers are healthy come October, that their big guys are ready to go. Um, and then they they can clearly, you know, possibly run the table here. They can afford to make those gambling risks that most teams can’t. They can keep signing injuryprone guys just because they can spend whatever they want. They don’t have a salary cap. They don’t have a limit. They don’t have a problem spending 300 million more than the Marlins this year on payroll because they can. And if you can, why not? So, yeah. I mean, I but yeah, I think health is going to play a big part of how far the Dodgers go when they get to October. They’ll get there. Uh even as a maybe as a wild card team, but playing the extra round with injury risk player, sure that’s going to be a factor.

It’s funny to me no one is giving the dodgers credit for being first place for a long time. They are a juggernaut team and they can break out easily and go on a tear. They have struggled bad but again with injuries it hasn’t been that easy for them. I don’t think padres will hold long to first place.
They have the right mindset so fell they have the right perspective this time. 🙂
Great video
Watch out for the team that no one is talking about… Padres have the Best Bullpen in baseball and it's not even close. The Padres have 15 shut out games most in the MLB… people keep talking about the overrated Brewers who are just beating Bottom feeders…Mets..Braves .Cubs and Pirates..these are not quality Wins because all these teams are Trending Down regardless of their position in the division. Brewers are in a Sht division and it shows
