Detroit Lions players meet with the media on August 14 | 2025 Training Camp Day 14
Jared, as far as building blocks go, how effective have these practices been with the Dolphins? Yeah, it’s always great to uh get get some new um new jerseys out there, some new teams to new new people to go against. I think it always happens at the right time in camp when you’re kind of getting annoyed of your own defense. And uh I told them I was excited for them to go annoy somebody else. So, uh it was fun to be out here and uh remember that you’re on the same team again. You know, being against a different team and um being able to root for each other is fun. Yeah, obviously John has talked about getting more deep shots and you guys were able to connect on that 50 yard one with Jamo. I mean, uh, how much has that kind of evolved over camp because of the improved protection as the line has kind of settled? Yeah, that was certainly part of it there for like a week. Um, it just seemed like kind of a rotating door at some spots at the line with the injuries and getting Decker back’s been been massive being able to protect a little bit better there. And um yeah, I think as camp goes on, you you want these things to start happening more often and and was able to hit some of those over the top this week and um yeah, it felt good. I I don’t think it was anything um I I surprised anybody, but yeah, it felt good to get that going a little bit. What was your biggest takeaway after these couple days? What what do you feel like the team took away that you could look forward? Yeah, I think things started to kind of gel a little bit, you know, certainly. And I think uh we have a standard for ourselves regardless of who we’re practicing against that I think we met two days in a row on in every phase. And and I think that’s a good thing. And and now does that mean that we’re we’re there? No. You still got stuff to work on and plenty of plays I’d like to have back and um you know I think about that two-minute drill at the end there like you know do I want to throw the ball away and not flip it to Shane? Like different things like that where you know you try to get better but but overall uh two good days and was proud of the way we responded today certainly after a good day yesterday. you know, being able to do it twice. J, on defense, Jared has looked really good. So far, look great these last two weeks. Just from your vantage point, what about their players stood out to you or impress you develop? Uh gosh, what stood out the most? I I think their communication has been so good. I I think, you know, Jack’s done a great job at at Mike, but when they got Alex back, that veteran presence there, being able to uh communicate and get everyone on the same page, obviously the Dline is is is doing what they’re doing. Hutch is doing his thing. Davenport’s doing his thing. But the communication from the back seven I think has been really impressive and um it’s really hard. They’re doing a good job. Make your life more difficult. Of course. Yeah. In practice. Yeah, it does. But it’s a good challenge and I think that’s where you know I’m at my career where our offense is at in our you know evolution of like we we like that challenge like make it hard and and they do and um they’ve certainly given us fits and we try to give them fits when we can. What’s your impression of Isaac and how much do you feel like he can become a real factor in the Yeah, he’s done great. He he really has. And I think uh again for him like I don’t know maybe a week or two ago you could kind of see like the light bulb go off a little bit where the speed of the game he started to catch up with and he started to understand the physicality it takes and um yeah he certainly has a role has a chance to have a role in our offense and uh has done a great job getting better really every day. Jerry, you obviously get to work with Mark Bernell a lot, but what is it like to have Bruce Gowski and Marcus Joan quarterbacks? Do you pull anything from that? It’s great having guys that play the position for me. It It’s so It’s so invaluable to be able to bounce things off of them, how they did things, how they saw things, certain plays that I’m not sure how I want to read, they can give me good insight on how they did it in the past. So, yeah, obviously Brew and I have been together for a long time. He’s been uh such a great mentor and help and coach to me and and then having those two guys this year has been even better. Your comfort level grown now that you got two young who your comfort level grown? How much has it grown? grown with two younger offensive lineman left in real. Yeah, they’re doing a great job. You know, I think I said this earlier in the year, but uh Tate’s maturity has been so impressive. Just him being able to step in there. These last two days were not even close to too big for him. You know, I think you get these guys from these big programs sometimes, they played national championships, like this stuff’s kind of just whatever to them. And um he’s one of those guys certainly. And then Mahogany in his own way as well is is doing great. You know, he he’s not a rookie, but he hasn’t played that much. and for him to be as comfortable as he is and um communicating well and doing the whole thing. It’s it’s been fun. Having Johnny Mo in the press box, do you think that means anything for him as you play a series just to get that communication from that? What’s your question? The preseason having the offensive coordinator in the press box as opposed to the field change anything as far as you get any kinks out at all? No, I don’t think so. No, I’ve done that before and um he likes being up there. I got no problem with it. Jared, throwing it back to your Kell days. Yeah, but David Shaw, you know, was heading Stanford, your big your big rival. What’s it like having him in the same room on the same team as we now? Yeah, we we we don’t go many days without like a little jab back and forth about Cal Stanford. So, it’s fun. Uh, but he’s been he’s been awesome. Really has. um having a guy that that’s got as much experience as he has and his temperament is so even keeled and level and um I can kind of if Johnny’s preoccupied with something I can get the answer from him very quickly and uh it’s it’s it’s very helpful to have a guy like him that that has no ego is just here to help and um has been tremendous addition for us. There’s been a lot of him are best friends. Oh yeah. Yeah. They’re like yin and yang. they they work together really well and um again it’s it’s he’s an extension of Johnny to some extent and so if if John like if Johnny’s preoccupied or doing something I know David will be on the field so if I need to talk to him about something immediately I can get some answers there. I can I and I really like just asking him his thoughts on things cuz he’s had so much experience on offense. He’s been a head coach obviously a successful head coach and just getting his thoughts on you know how how did you think practice was today? How did how did you feel about that throw? He’s got great insight and and is always thinking. It’s it’s it’s a lot of fun for me. There’s been a lot of talk about how Montgomery and Gibbs are going to be used in different ways, more and more different ways. Is it going to be as noticeable as we think it’s going to be? And and how do you like that? Yeah, I hope so. Yeah, we’re working on how how many different ways we can use them. I think as often as we can get both those guys on the field is a good thing for us and and finding creative ways to do that is the hard part. Um and that’s a challenge upstairs for those guys, but they’re doing a good job of figuring it out. And um you don’t want to ever take them both take either of them off the field. So, we’re trying to find ways to throw it to one of them and have one of them block and and then throw it to the other guy, have the other guy block, hand it to one of them. Um, yeah, it’s it’s it’s it’s a lot of fun and and those two guys are good. On a much lighter note, it’s being name dropped by Taylor Swift. Your thoughts? Yeah, it’s pretty crazy, huh? Uh, very cool, I guess. Yeah, that was that was that was a crazy crazy couple hours last night for for me and uh my phone was like, oh, okay. But, um, yeah, kind of cool. about Johnny. Jerry, what’s been his best strength so far, you would say, just after being back around him again this time, Johnny? Yeah. Uh, his biggest strength, great question. Um, I think I said this the other day. I I think his ability to listen to his players is is is is massive. Um, he’s got no ego. He’s he’s very open to listening. He wants to know what we want to do. Um, he’s very open to listening to me, you know, and and and I I I feel like I’ve earned that, but he’s he’s very open to it and and collaborative, and it’s fun. And it’s really fun for to be a part of an offense for not only myself but the leaders like St. Brown Pane Decker to be able to give that input and to and to have it express itself in the plays and um it’s been fun. It’s been great. What was your assessment of the red zone offense obviously in the last two days and especially I mean how much does that really the success come down to play design? I mean just I thought it was pretty good. What do you think? I think we scored quite a bit down there. So I thought it was pretty good. Um I haven’t seen today obviously on tape but uh good couple days down there. It was a good challenge against a different defense and um I thought we showed up well. How about the play design and just I mean that it takes to you know to get space in that I mean to create space in those condensed areas. Yeah, it’s it’s a lot of work but I I I don’t know if we’re running much different than than we had in the past, but yeah, there’s some new stuff, some new wrinkles we like and um credit to Johnny. Some good stuff. After watching the tape of yesterday’s practice said he was really fired up about it. Just for you to hear that and and how good is it to have days like you had yesterday today? I mean, it certainly gives me confidence being a rookie coming into a grown man’s league, coming in here trying to compete. So, I think I can do my best abilities, go out there and play physical as I possibly can and clean up the technique later. So, for me, it’s going out there trying to set the tone for myself and the line and then going from there. Were these joint practices important building blocks for you? Yes, definitely. It’s a new face. Um, instead of hitting DJ Reer every play, I get to hit somebody else. So, that’s kind of fun. Um, but yeah, not but DJ gets me better every day, but that was a chance for somebody else, too. How’s it felt having Taylor Decker back on that line? It’s awesome. Taylor’s Taylor’s awesome being out there. Um, he’s a lot of fun to have out there. Think about him as kind of like a mentor on that line. How’s that been for you? Yeah, definitely. I mean, he’s one of those guys along with Paneet and Graham that I can lean on whenever I have a question with anything. How important has that work been getting Deck back for the last week now? That’s the kind of starting five. You get a chance to work that for a week. And just in your opinion, how’s it looked since he’s gotten back? Yeah, I think it’s it’s important to have all five of your guys together to mesh together because the offensive line doesn’t mesh. it’s hard to play well. So, um, having him over there with Christian, them being able to work together is huge. Just kind of curious your outlook on today’s practice. Seemed like they had a lot of success running the ball behind you and Pane on the right side there. Yeah, like I said earlier, it’s just about coming out here being physical, not letting them match our physicality. So, I think if you do that, it’s hard for them to keep up. Your coach called you out today in the podium. He said you’re a starter. He thinks in the NFL. What do you think of today? Uh, it’s a dream come true. I mean, it’s it’s something I’ve dreamed of since I knew what football was. So, it’s it’s awesome. So, for him to say it is it’s a proud moment for you. Yes, definitely. for sure. How much do you feel like you guys have improved just from the start of OTAAS to just now where what what areas of improvement have you saw in your Um I think like I said it’s the meshing um I think um Paneet’s getting more used to playing next to me. I’m getting more used to playing next to him and Graham. Graham’s getting more used to playing next to me. So I think as we practice that’s going to get better and better and everything’s going to keep on improving. What’s the experience been like playing next to Pane? What like what’s the biggest It makes life It makes life pretty easy. Um a lot of the times he’s you get help when you’re not expecting it from him. So, um, playing next to him and then also like that mentor aspect of it. I can lean on him whenever I have questions in the film room on the field. So, he’s one of those guys that’s always there for me and it’s it’s a lot of fun playing next to him. In what way do you feel like your chemistry with FA has improved since the start of camp? Like, is he passing? I think I think he knows how I’m going to fit up on double teams. He knows how I know how he’s going to fit up on double teams. So, kind of just playing off each other’s gotten more cleaner and smoother. Instead of just playing football, we’re reacting off each other, knowing what each other are going to do. like an unspoken communication there, would you say? Yeah. Uh, definitely. Walked up late, just that getting those game reps, you know, last weekend. How does those help you get ready for the regular season? How do you think you did with those? Um, played all right. I mean, I’m always going to say I can play better because I can. I didn’t have a the a perfect game. Nobody ever will, but I can. There’s definitely shows me what I need to improve on. Speed was different. Different type of front we played, different type of defense. So, it was good to get in front of that and get some experience in it. You played in front of plenty of big crowds, bright lights, but is it different in the NFL? Was it good to get that out of you? You know what I mean? Yeah, definitely. Yeah, the nerves were were there, but I always say whenever they’re gone, I’m going to quit. That’s when I’m that’s what I’m going to call it. But, I mean, it’s big crowd, whatever. But, I try to look at as I’m playing football. That’s what I’m here for. It’s what I’ve done my whole life. In matching up against Tyreek and DJ Reed, uh DJ Reer in practice. What is your assessment of the Lions defensive front? Man, they’re strong and physical. Uh they get me better every day. Like I said earlier, both of them. I know I got to got to come to work every day against both of them or it’s not going to turn out well for me. Do you get any indication from the coaching staff whether you’re going to play any more in the preseason? Uh, no.

Tate has what it takes, already.
That garrett goff is the best I've seen since Joe Montanya
Was hoping Goff would have bulked up a little in the off season. Too busy getting married and having babies. 😊
"I always say when the nerves are gone, that's when I'm gonna call it" what a rockstar outlook. Pushing yourself isn't getting more comfortable, trying harder. It's continuing to care enough, appreciating the work, wanting to get better, having it matter to you.
What the heck was the Taylor swift thing?
