Who should the Royals extend? | Kansas City Royals Podcast

As we get closer into the off season, who should the Royals look into extending? I’ll give you my thoughts next on Locked on Royals. Take control of your finances with Monarch Money and use code locked on MLB at monarchmoney.com for 50% off on your first year. I wanted to do this first segment tonight because or at least I wanted to do it a certain way tonight because I’ve been getting so many questions in Mailbag Fridays about contract extensions. Who would I extend? Who are the likeliest extension candidates? if I’m hearing anything about extensions happening. And I thought it would be a good time with it being the off day with us now a full day and a little bit removed from a crushing loss yesterday to Washington and still, you know, a little under 24 hours away from the White Sox series beginning. Thought it’d be a good time to look ahead to the off season because whether that ends for the Royals at the end of September or it ends a little bit later than that, uh the off season is closer. It’s closer than it was a month ago, two months ago. We all know that to be the case. And though a big focus of the off season will be about adding a legitimate bat, it was the same, you know, off season last year where you had to go and add to the offense. But I will say it’ll be slightly different because whereas last year a big priority was keeping Michael Waka and then also going out there and finding a leadoff hitter. They wanted Jonathan India and now Jonathan India is not even their leadoff hitter anymore. It’s Mikey Stressky against righties and it’s Mikel Garcia against lefties. So I would imagine going into this off season they’re going to have to make some tougher decisions on who really can be a part of their 26-man roster and who’s going to be in their rotation, who’s going to be in their bullpen. And I would throw out a guess that they are going to land one big bat in free agency. Now, maybe I should take a few steps back and open it up to the possibility of a trade, but I’ll just go out there and say I think it’s going to be free agency just because trades are really hard to pull off. And if you’re going to go get a big bat, it’s easier to do it in free agency than it is via trade. So, let’s kick things off here and talk about a few players that I believe will get handed an extension. And I probably should say too that I’m not picking extensions where they’re just going to be a cheap upgrade. Uh, you know, if they’re making, you know, arbitration money and then they’re going to be making a few million more than that. That’s not what I’m going to be getting at here. I’m more so talking about big time extensions to keep homegrown players here or guys you acquired that you want to keep long term. So, the first one that comes to mind, because I feel there’s a list of guys that constantly come up on a mailbag Friday, that would be Mel Garcia, that would be Vinnie Pasquantino, that would be Chris Bouic, that would be Jack Kaggleon. Uh, and I’m sure that, you know, Cole Reagan’s can be floated out there as well because the extension he got bought out the last couple years of arbitration, but we can also go over if he’s going to get one or not in a bigger contract extension than that when we really look at what Seth Lugo got with his extension. Will Cole Reagan’s get something similar to that? So, I want to start it off with Michael Garcia. He has been not only one of the best players on the Royals, he’s been one of the better players in baseball this year. You could make a very strong case that he is a top 15 player in all of baseball. You just you really could. He’s a great defender over at third base. He has been a 300 hitter for the majority of this season. He’s got some speed so he can steal bases. I mean, everything that he’s done has been everything the Royals could have hoped for and then some. You know, Mel Garcia was such a raw prospect and when he first broke into the league, you saw the tools were there. You saw that this type of season was possible. He just had to put it all together. Where I would hesitate is that he’s done this one time. So, if Michael Garcia were to do this next year, I believe it’s a no-brainer at that point. I understand the price tag goes way up, which is why when we talk about extensions, especially in small market clubs, you kind of have to gamble a little bit. Well, if you believe he can do this again, now is the time to give him the extension. Because he may look at this type of season and say, “Man, it’ll be smart to cash in on an extension now to get locked up somewhere instead of reverting back to what I was in 24 or 23 and then not getting that big-time contract. I mean, he’s 25 years old, so the Royals probably love him as a contract extension because you can give him four or five years and you’re playing out his prime. You also run the risk if you give him a deal that’s quite expensive and he reverts back to what he was in 24, that’s going to be a contract that hurts you a lot because I’ve never really believed that he is a third baseman just because third baseman have to have a little bit more pop than he does. he can get there, but I feel that we all know that Mike Garcia’s strengths are defense, speed, and being more of a contact hitter. If the Royals want to play it that way, I’m really not going to fight it because am I going to be disappointed in a 300 hitting third baseman that probably will hit 15 home runs a year? I’m not going to. Not with as good as he is defensively and what that left side of the infield can be for years. I’m going to say that they’re going to wait and see maybe one more year. Uh, and if it’s a little bit worse than what he was this year, I still think that that can be a contract extension worthy player. Uh, but I just don’t know if you give a guy a four or fiveyear deal because of one season. Not that it’s the same player, but the Royals did do that with Hunter Doer. And again, I don’t believe they’re going to have the same careers, but Hunter Oer had a really good 2019. He got the four-year deal, and we all know that turned out. Sometimes you just need to wait and see if they can do it one more time. And maybe, I mean, who’s to say you can’t do an extension middle of the season. If he starts playing really well, you know, the first half of 2026, maybe that’s when you give him the extension. But for this off season, I’m going to lean toward a wait and see with Mike Garcia. Number two on this list, Vinnie Pascantino. I do feel that he is going to be due for an extension this off season cuz now you’ve seen multiple years where he’s been a slightly above league average bat. He plays a fine first base and he really is one of the heart and soul guys of the team. He’s a fan favorite. You got the Sasquatch out in left field. I I feel very confident that Vinnie Pascantino is going to get some form of an extension. Now, I don’t want to go back on what I said to open this the podcast with, which is, well, I’m not going to say, well, yes, he can get a three-year extension, just very cheap, making a little bit more money than he is right now. No, I do believe it’ll be a healthy extension, and I’d have to go and look at what the first base market would be, but I would imagine that Vinnie is going to get something like that this off season. He’s now proven multiple years he’s able to be that middle of the quarterback guy. He’s a leader of the team. Kind of feels that he is due for a long-term commitment in Kansas City. And I would say that he probably wants to be here. Third on the list, Chris Bubich. This one’s a little bit trickier. Uh he is going to be expensive if he signs that contract extension and the health does concern me. I feel that you can get a multipletime all-star in Chris Muic. I really do. And I feel the Royals believe the same thing. But is he gonna be that guy you give a four to fiveyear deal to and he just can never finish out a season? He might be really good in April and May, but you can’t count on him for June, July, and August. I still want to believe with a contract year coming up that they can work out something and it can be team friendly because Chris Bubich unfortunately doesn’t have the leverage of saying well I’m worth 20 to 25 million when he hasn’t been a efficient pitcher for an entire season yet and that does hurt to say because I love Chris Bubich and I believe he can be a a great piece for this rotation for years to come. You also have Michael Waka under contract and you’ve got Seth Lugo under contract and you’ve got Reagan’s under contract and you’re gonna have Burger and you’re gonna have Kolic who we’ll talk about. You’ve got a lot of options. Noah Cameron, I didn’t even bring him up. So, with Chris Bubich going into a contract here, who knows, maybe it’s one of those situations where you try to look into trading him instead of giving him that extension. So, like Michael Garcia, it would be more of a wait and see. I got to see you do this again. Um, but I also could see a world in which he gets dealt in the offseason. You’ve got Noah Cameron, you’ve got Ryan Burgerer, you’ve got Reagan’s coming back, Lugo and Waka. You got a lot of arms and pitching is the lifeblood of this team. And it also can help them get some legitimate bats for the lineup. So, I’m going to say no with Chris Bubich. The next one on our list here is Cole Reagan’s. And then we’ll wrap it up from there. He did just get the three-year deal. Uh so I’m going to say no for this off season. There would be no need to renegotiate it. He hasn’t been good this year. He hasn’t been available. And when he was available, he was a much different pitcher than he was in 2024. Really, the only guy that I see getting that extension is Vinnie Pascantino at this point in time. Things can always change. I would hope to be wrong on Garcia because I would love to see him in a Royals uniform for years to come, but my gut tells me as of August 14th, Vinnie Pascantino will be the guy to get the long-term extension in Kansas City where the other guys either they’re just going to keep him on the contract they have or they’d be looking to move him in the offseason. Let’s take our first break of the show. When we come back, I want to talk about Steven Kolick in the Royals starting rotation. Personally, I’d love to see him get some starts the rest of the way. And I’m going to tell you why next on Lockdown Royals. You are tuned in to Lockdown Royals in the Lockdown Podcast Network. The Royals rotation is pretty crowded, especially with Michael Lorenzan coming back this Saturday. Cole Reagan’s might return at some point before seasons end if it gets to the middle portion of September and he might be ready to go. I guess it does matter where the Royals are in the wild card standings. I’m just not holding my breath. And I want to say that I’ve said that before. I’m hopeful he can return. The Royals also have an abundance of arms where they don’t need to rush him back. Health for next year needs to be the most important thing for Cole Reagan. And if you want him to be the 2024 for him, the last thing you need to do is rush him back out there and him reagravate something. And as things stand, August 14th, you’ve got Seth Lugo still in the rotation. You’ve got Michael Waka, you’ve got Noah Cameron, Ryan Bert, and Michael Lorenzan has now replaced Bay Falter in the starting five. Bay Falter is going to the bullpen. And I saw some push back from people that follow me on this podcast, but it’s very simple, and Annie Rogers pointed this out on Twitter. He’s out of options. You can’t send him down to Omaha to get stretched out and have Stephen Collet come up and you just do that simple swap. Ryan Ber did have options. You’re not pulling Ryan Ber out of the rotation after what he’s done through two starts. I just want there to be a scenario in which Steven Kick can get up to Kansas City and you see what he has to offer. If you go back and watch him pitch in San Diego, you saw that he was a ground ball heavy pitcher. I mean, he had good movement on his stuff, had a little bit of that kick change, had a pretty firm sinker, and had a really good sweeper as well. Like, the stuff was noticeable in the same way that it was noticeable with Ryan Burgerer. I understand why he went to Triple A, and the other guys got the nod. Ryan Ber has more upside than Steven Kolic. Bailey Falter was out of options. he had to be in the rotation and you wanted to see what he had in the rotation before you made this switch with Lorenzan and Falter going to the bullpen with Kick now you’ve kept him stretched out in Omaha so he could start in Kansas City just comes down to what you want to do you want to go with a six-man rotation if Lorenzan doesn’t pitch as well is that how you make the switch because tomorrow before the game my take is that Bailey Falter is going to be in the bullpen. Lorenzan or you don’t even need to make the move until Saturday. So, I take that back. After the game tomorrow night and maybe sometime in Saturday afternoon, we’ll get the official announcement that Michael Lorenzan has been activated. He’s making the start that night. Luender Ravala is going to get optioned back down to Triple A even though I really liked his stuff in his big league debut on Wednesday afternoon and Bailey Falter will be in the bullpit. Those will be the switches they make. Steven Kick is a righty. Makes it a little bit more difficult when you’re looking at the bullpen. If he was a lefty, it’d be easy to swap him and Sam Long out. Sam Long, I believe, is out of options. That’s why he stayed around for, you know, multiple months now. He has been better, so I’ll give him credit there. But if Steven Kick was dominating and you had room for another lefty in the bullpen, it would be a simple switch. But since he’s a righty, you’re really going to have to think hard about who you’d replace him with. And you also want to keep him stretched out in the rotation. Either he’s got to be starting in Omaha or he’s got to be starting in Kansas City. That’s why I believe a six-man rotation might be the better plan here. You would still need to switch around somebody in the bullpen. Somebody’s got to go back down to Triple A. And who would that be? I understand injuries can happen and they’ve been piling up for the Royals. That would be the better solution though of just being able to make that switch and nobody’s going on the shelf. Nobody’s going on the IIL. I just want to see what he has. We actually have seen what he has. He was pitching for a really good San Diego team and that’s why I almost wanted him to get the nod right after the trade. I really wanted all three of them to be in Kansas City. I knew though that they had to have all of these guys starting and there just wasn’t enough spots for three guys to be joining the rotation unless they wanted to go with a six-man right off the bat in September. And with what we’ve seen from Seth Lugo maybe needing more time, needing an extra day of rest, maybe all these guys need an extra day of rest. I wouldn’t hate it whatsoever. I really would not. You get to see a little bit of Steven Kick. I believe he can help this team. I believe that his style playing to the Royals defense can really be good for a fatigued rotation and at times a fatigued bullpen. And with 40-ish games to go and it’s going to be a little bit under that at this series end on Sunday or the series finale. I want to see Steven Kowok at some point and I don’t want to have it, you know, fall on somebody getting hurt. I I don’t want to see that again. I I don’t want to see somebody wind up on the 15-day IIL and you’re constantly having to just put a band-aid on the rotation. The good news is I don’t view Steven Kick as a band-aid. I view him as somebody that can be a long-term solution for the Royals. And that’s why I want to circle back to the first part of our segment today, which includes Chris Bubich. Chris Bubich was an all-star this year. phenomenal stuff and just never really showed any signs of having that injury until the final start or two of his season. Now, he said he had been battling it and that did concern me more and that’s why my mind has changed a little bit on what you do with Chris Bubich long term because if this is a guy who is pitching hurt and has had Tommy John before and now has had this injury, is he going to be the same guy next year, that’s always going to be an up in the air thing. But the Royals made these moves for these starters to have depth to ensure that if they traded somebody, they could have legitimate pieces to work with. Ryan Berard already looks like that guy. I’m not ready to punt on the idea that Bailey Falter could become something. I’m just higher on Steven Kick. And you’ve already got two lefties that’ll be in the rotation next year and Cole Reagan’s and Noah Cameron. You’re going to have Michael Walka back. You’re going to have Seth Lugo. There’s four guys. Ryan Burgerer can be that fifth guy. And maybe it can be Steven Kick as your swing guy. You needed a swing guy for a large portion of this season. You’re not always going to want to count on that guy to make 15 to 20 starts, but if you were to count on him to throw five or six, Steven Kick, I believe, gives you the best chance to survive an injury. I really do. I liked his stuff in San Diego and clearly San Diego had a lot of hopes for him as well. And when the Padres’s made that trade, as great as Freddy Fine had been or has been, I should say, and as much of a of a fan favorite he’s already become, those were two pitchers they didn’t want to give up for a reason. They thought those two guys could be great pieces for the Padres’s rotation now and moving forward. For the Royals, it should be the same thing. Now, Michael Lorenzan deserves to start on Saturday, and as long as he’s healthy and pitching well, I’d keep him in that spot. This is more so about seeing what Steven Kolic has and making sure that the rest of your rotation can stay rested. I mean, it feels that they are hanging on by a thread a little bit. You’re getting consistent outings from Noah Cameron. You’re getting the same from Michael Walka, but at some point, just odds are going to tell you those guys are going to struggle, too. Noah Cameron’s never been a full-time starter at the big league level before and he’ll probably surpass a 100red innings tomorrow night and you still have another month and a half to go. As we’ve seen before, those guys that have never done it, you need to make sure they’re taken care of late in the season. I believe bringing Steven Kolick up to Kansas City, maybe during roster expansion. I didn’t even talk about that. For the September callups, I’d want him to be the guy. And if he’s out of the bullpen, fine. Or if he’s making starts, I just want to see him in Kansas City and showing what he can do for this team now and moving forward. We’ll take our final break of the show. When we come back, let’s preview an upcoming series with the Chicago White Socks. That’s next on Locked on Royals. Let’s look ahead to a three-game series with the Chicago White Socks who come into Kansas City 44 and 77 on the season. The Royals 60 and 61. Still trying to get over 500. And we discussed this yesterday. It’s got to be a sweep. That’s my take. I believe this late in the season, already middle of August, you’ve got Texas in town right after this to wrap up the 10-game home stand. You didn’t sweep Washington. You took the series and that’s fine to take the series if you sweep Chicago. If they would have swept Washington, I would have been talking into this camera saying just take two or three. Would be nice to sweep them, but the goal in my opinion is a seven and three home stand. would absolutely be thrilled with eight and two, but where they stand two and one, if you swept Chicago, all you have to do then is split with Texas and have the upside of, yeah, taking three out of four from the Rangers. But first things first, you got to take care of business with the Chicago White Socks. And the same thing we said about Washington, this is a bad baseball team that you just have to take care of. You You can’t overlook them. There are talented players in this lineup, young, hungry, and inspired players that can sneak up on you. In the same way it was with Washington, they had some guys in that lineup that were not world beaters, but they came through when it mattered and especially were able to do that in the series finale on Wednesday. Now, for Friday, it’ll be Noah Cameron going for the Royals. And truth be told, is there anybody in the rotation that you trust more than Noah Cameron to take the ball every fifth day? Micah Walker deserves his praise. He deserves his flowers. Noah Cameron has been lights out. He has been exceptional in his rookie season. 6 and5 with a 2.52 ERA. He needed to even up that series in uh where was that in his last start? Minnesota. That’s right. And he went five and two/3. wasn’t as sharp in this one. Gave up six hits, walked two, but no earned runs. He did give up four earned against Toronto, but that was coming out five shutout innings against Cleveland and a start that he really needed to be sharp as well. So, I love putting any little money down or just having the confidence if I want to go to a game, I always hope that Noah Cameron’s throwing because you either know they’re going to be in that game or the Royals are going to win and he’s going to dominate. And I get that that feel for tomorrow night. He’s going up against Aaron Savali. We’ve talked about him before on the podcast. Thought that he might be a trade target for the Royals around the deadline. Didn’t end up happening because the White Socks didn’t even try to move him, it looks like. But you talk about an earned run average that shot up after one start. Savale was throwing fantastically over like a four or five start stretch. In fact, if you were to go back to I believe it was July 20th, yeah, July 20th, he throws six shutout innings against Pittsburgh. He then throws five shutout innings against the Cubs of all teams. He then throws six and a third shutout innings against the Angels. So, three straight starts. He doesn’t allow a run. He faced Cleveland back on August 8th and he gave up nine earned runs and three and a third. He gave up eight hits, walked two, did manage to strike out six, but was shelled by the Guardians. And his ERA went from 3.99 to 491, almost an entire run because of that outing against Cleveland. So, he’s not really rolling in hot, but you do have three really good starts and one really bad one. What’s more likely for tomorrow? Is he off again or is he gonna go back to what he was doing to those other three teams that he faced where he threw shutout ball over five and six innings of work? It’s not an overpowering arm the Royals will be facing. That does give me some concern, but they have faced Cavali before. Here’s a couple of the guys that have some experience with him. Adam Frasier is hitting 143 in 14 at bats. Mikel Garcia is 1 for 10. Randall Gritic’s one for three. Jonathan Indie is 0 for six. Kyle Isbel is hitting 077 in 13 at bats. Vinnie Pasquantino is just two for nine. Salvador Perez hitting 250 and 16 at bats. Bobby Jr. hitting just 220 at bats. And Mikey Stroky is one for five. Though he does have a home run off of Savali. So does Salvador Perez, Vinnie Pascantino, and Kyle Isbel. A lot of that though came from success when he was with Cleveland and when he was with Tampa. But the Royals do not have the greatest of numbers against Cavali in his career. Still, he’s not going to blow it by you. He does have a really good cutter and he can pair nicely with that slider, but if he is anything like he was against Cleveland, the Royals should have no issue in scoring runs tomorrow night. Only guy to have any at bats off of Noah Cameron was Curtis Me when he was with Tampa Bay earlier this year and he was one for three. Looking ahead to Saturday’s game, that’ll be a 610 first pitch. Michael Lorenzan will be making his return to the mound. He is 5-8 with a 461 erra. And the White Socks are going to be sending Shawn Burke, the 25-year-old, to the mound who has a 426 ERA in 114 innings of work. In his last five starts, he’s got a 436 ERA. Not going to work that deep into the game. Uh back on August 9th against Cleveland, he only worked three and a third. Gave up five hits, two earned runs, did strike out seven and he struck out seven against the Angels as well in five innings of work. Gave up three earned. And then against the Cubs, he struck out eight and four and two/3 innings of work and gave up just two earned runs. And as I said for the year, he’s got a 426 ERA. Last seven, 436. Last 15, 422. And then again over the course of his entire season, that 426 ERA has appeared out of the bullpen, has made starts as well, but that’s who the Royals will be going up against the big Shawn Burke, 66 240 lbs. As for the matchups in this one, for the Royals that have seen him, you’ve got Mikel Garcia who’s 0 for two. India is 0 for three, Kyle Isabelle’s one for one, Vinnie is two for three, Salvador Perez is 0 for two, and Bobby White Jr. is 0 for three. Uh you do have Andrew Benendi against Lorenzan who’s hitting 091 in 11 at bats. Luis Robert Jr. is hitting .231 and 13 at bats. And everybody else in the lineup doesn’t really have more than two or three at bats against Michael Lorenzan in their career. And then on Sunday, the series finale, it’ll be Ryan Bert throwing for Kansas City and it will be Davis Martin throwing for the White Socks. Really, really good change up. uh he just has not been as sharp over the last seven outings. Against Cleveland, he did go five innings, gave up three earned. Against Seattle, he went five innings, gave up five earned, and then against Philadelphia, gave up two earned in five and two/3 innings of work. Does have some command issues from time to time. He walked three against Cleveland, walked three against Philadelphia, and he did have a good start to the season. I actually was very intrigued by him way back in April and right when the Royals were coming to Kansas City, I believe he did make a start against the Royals and it didn’t go the way I thought it was. I thought he was going to dominate Kansas City and that’s not what really happened. He went four and a third, gave up four runs on seven hits and struck out only two guys. I thought he had lights out stuff going into that series, but he just uh wasn’t really able to carry that magic over in his first visit to Kaufman Stadium back on May 8th. He did respond well from that. And going into July, he actually had a 3.79 ERA, but it’s all been downhill from there. He had a 7.2 or still does have a 7.2 20 RA and two starts so far in the month of August. So, he’s going to be going on Sunday for the White Socks. Again, Ryan Ber will be throwing for the Royals. As for the matchups in this series, Vinnie Pascantino hitting 429 off of Davis Martin in seven at bats. Salvi’s hitting 375 and eight at bats. Bobby Wood Jr. 273 and 11 at bats. And then not much familiarity after that. and nobody on the White Sox lineup or on the White Sox roster for that matter has seen Ryan Burger. So that will be the series finale on Sunday and the Royals will immediately turn around and face the Rangers right after that. 1. Mail bag question: What would be your thoughts on a Seth Lugo 10day IL and Kolek coming up. Also I don’t understand all this jac hate. He is a awesome prospect and with an amazing future can you help me understand where people come from when they say that

  2. Frazier and Lorenzen. Pretty much the whole roster is under control. Garcia is pre arb maybe. Vinnie is in his arb years now, so maybe he gets a little money. It depends on where the team is at next year around the deadline. Bring back Yas would be nice. Would love to see us sign a bat in the offseason. Isbel probably gets an extension I’d imagine, but we shall see. A lot of our roster is in pre arb, or at least the players not already under a contract
