Bickley Blast: Ketel Marte’s frequent PTO asks of the Arizona Diamondbacks have come to light
This is what I’ve heard and and the limited reporting that I can offer on this is that Catel Marte asked for that Friday off. He had gone to the Dominican Republic. The team didn’t know. The team flew him out there. He wasn’t on the flight back and he told the team, “I need to take Friday off. I won’t be back on Friday.” And that was before he knew his house was robbed. The truth has come to light about Catel Marte, the superstar who has occasionally sabotaged his team with PTO requests at the worst time. And it’s even worse than I originally thought. According to Ace reporter Nick Pakoro, the grumbling around Marte inside the Diamondbacks clubhouse got to the point where teammates believed his time off requests around the All-Star game set in motion events that led the team to trade off key players at the deadline. Some players thought it was especially disrespectful to the four guys who live in Arizona who might have to leave their houses and their families, which is what happened to Mel Kelly, Randall Gritic, and Shelby Miller, especially at a time when Corbin Carroll was grinding through games with a broken bone in his hand because he felt he owed it to the other guys in the clubhouse. Obviously, at the current moment, the team is in a great place, and Marte has broken out of his postall-star game malaise in a very big way. But I hope this latest story helps Marte truly understand how much the club depends on him and how important it is that he grinds alongside them when his teammates need him the most.
Dan Bickley remarks on Nick Piecoro’s story in the Arizona Republic about Arizona Diamondbacks teammates having issues about Ketel Marte’s frequent requests for time off. Bickley also explains how he hopes the second baseman can grow from the drama as he continues to shine and lift the team on the field.
