disarray is uh a bit of an understatement. AJ said he wasn’t the biggest fan of the NFL PA throughout his career, but he was surprised about how ridiculous this all is. I think that’s probably an accurate way to depict it. How do you feel, J? Yeah, I mean I I have a similar thought. I mean I the PA is an extremely difficult job because you’re trying to get the entire National Football League on the same page fighting towards the same cause. And you have to remember the hardest part of it all is that it’s 3.3 years or less. That’s the average NFL career. So most of these guys are in the league for three years or less. They do not care about long-term goals of the PA. They don’t care about long-term objectives. we want to play and we want to get paid. And that’s how I was as a rookie. I came in during the lockout and they kept talking about all the big picture things and everything. And I was like, “Guys, I don’t care. I just want to play.” I my my pay Trent Williams got drafted in the same slot the year before me. Got a lot more money than I did. I didn’t care. I was like, “Put me on the field and let me play.” As I went in my career and as I saw how this business works, I started to understand, oh, there is a whole lot you should be fighting for here. And there’s a whole lot that we could do to watch all the big games. I became obsessed with it. I became like a person who was running through the halls of my house screaming, “We drafted Xavier Worthy.” And my friends are like, “What is who body snatched you? This isn’t this is what do you mean we drafted Xavier Worthy?” I forget where I was, but you were the first person to tell me that drafted the first in the draft. No, I was screeching. I couldn’t believe it. [Music] See, Adam Gold show. What’s going on? Hope everything is hunky dory in your world. It’s a Friday. Let’s go. I’m excited. Absolutely. I just showed you a raised fist. Also excited that it is the end of your work week and the beginning of your sports week. And for those who celebrate, let’s raise a pint to the start of the Premier League today. Don’t uh don’t at me. It’s fine. It’s a sport. Yeah. Well, my uh you enjoy it or not. In my world, there’s a big UFC fight tomorrow. So, three nights tomorrow. Who do we got? Draus Duplexi. Hamza Chum. Yeah. Was what? Yeah. Were those names of people? Mhm. Yep. Two of them. Two separate ones. Yep. Really? Yep. That just sounded like a series of just like random sounds thrown together. Who is it again? Draus Duplexi who’s fighting. He’s got a belt. So, he’s defending his belt. I also have a belt. Then we have Hamzachi Mayv who’s undefeated. Does not have a belt but is trying to get one. So, they sell them. Mhm. You can go to like a department store. I know. And get one. And it’s been crazy because we’ve been watching and I’m I’m not a like a wrestler fan, you know, that I grew up watching like the ‘9s. We all did. Of course. Well, I mean, I used to watch uh it was then the Worldwide Wrestling Federation. Yes. So, it was WWF when I was a kid growing up. So, I grew up with uh Bob Bland and Superfly, Jimmy Snooker. Stan the man. I grew up with those guys. Yeah. Well, we’re watching this uh documentary on Netflix called Unreal and it dives into that. It’s actually been very fascinating. So, I would recommend it even if you’re a fan or not a fan. When When I was a kid, this is no joke. Vince McMahon Oh, yeah. was the television analyst. That’s what he was. Yeah. Now, I have no idea if he was also the owner of it then, too. I really don’t know. Uh, I’ I’d be fascinated to watch that. I bet it’s uh a a riveting riveting watch. We got a lot of stuff to do. Uh, Mike Kay, right, who covers the uh the Panthers for the Charlotte Observer, is going to join us in like seven minutes from Houston. From Houston, where he is already in a lather. Exactly. It’s apparently super uh damp. Yeah. In Houston. Not rain, but Dan, like I know yesterday during the joint practices they it began No, the Yeah, the joint practices yesterday um it was like 90° at 9:30. Oh, that’s gross. Local time. Yeah. Heat index was over 100. Yeah. No, that’s gross. I did read yesterday while I was looking for seventh inning stretch material, right? Uh it’s this is the muggiest summer since 1981. Random fact. um like all over the country or the country mainly they the article I read was mostly from the eastern side my house Mississippi Valley to the east coast but yeah I’m sure Houston’s in there. Yeah. Well, Houston’s always in there. Uh all right, let’s try to clear up some things before we get to that. Let’s get it started. Let’s get it started here. All right. First thing I want to do before we’ll talk, we’ll we’ll hear from some Panthers uh folk in a minute and then Mike Kay will join us from Houston. Remember the Connor Stallions uh controversy with the University of Michigan? Remember it was Jim Harbaugh last year? Michigan wins a national championship. But earlier in the season, he was apparently authorizing this I don’t even know what you’d call Connor Sta Stallions uh member of the staff. Don’t know what he did, but essentially he was a spy. Yes. Right. He was spying on opponents in various ways. Uh sometimes on the sidelines, sometimes in the stands. It was a pretty intricate whole scheme they had going on. We all knew that they were going to get hit with sanctions. Well, the punishments were handed down today. Four years of probation, which essentially means you better not do anything. Yeah. It’s really what it does. Uh for those people watching on YouTube, uh you go to YouTube, Adam Gold Show or 999 Fan, either one. You saw me wag my finger. Mhm. Don’t you do it, young man. It happened. Um, there are financial penalties. These, by the way, the most significant of all of this, and it is substantial. Not even going to lie. It’s a $50,000 fine. Stop. Hold on. Plus 10% of the budget for the football program. The estimate is that that could be as much as $80 million in terms of the budget for the football program. And so 10% of that, right? Uh a fine equivalent to the anticipated loss of all postseason competition revenue uh revenue sharing associated with the 25 and 26 seasons. So, um, whatever they earn essentially in shared revenue based on postseason play would get lost in a fine over the next two years. Uh, there, you know, 25% reduction in football official visits, whatever. Uh, 14-week prohibition on recruiting uh, communications. They’ll violate that. Uh, Connor Stallion’s got an eight-year show cause. Whatever. He’s never going to work in football again. At least in college football again. Not sure he really worked in college football before. Jim Harbaugh 10year show cause. And what that does, a show cause for those people who do not know, means that if a college football program wanted to hire Jim Harbaugh for 10 years, they would have to essentially um like 10 years from now, they would have to like appeal to the NCAA as to why they should be allowed to hire him. If they get approval, he will be suspended for one year. Okay. He’s never coaching in college again. No, it doesn’t matter. Uh, let’s see. Dinard Robinson is a coach, used to play quarterback for the Wolverines, got a three-year show cause. Sherrod Moore, the current head coach, got a two-year show cause order. again, they’ve already hired he’s been the head was head coach last year um and will be suspended for a total of three games. Michigan self-imposed the first two of those three games for this season. They are the the second and third games of the year. It is so convenient. Not not that Michigan plays anybody big in the opener because they don’t. They play New Mexico, but they’re at Oklahoma the second game. Well, they don’t want to have no coach when they play at Oklahoma. So, Shiron Moore will be allowed to coach that. But the next two games, he’s suspended. Central Michigan and then the big clash, he says, uh, jokingly at Nebraska. And Nebraska might be okay, uh, in terms of, uh, the Big 10 this year. So maybe that’s a loss. But um it’s interesting how you can cherrypick when you are going to be suspended. He was also suspended for the first game next season which will be uh that big rivalry game with Central Michigan. Laughable. Laughable. As my friend Mark Andis who does radio in Louisville, as he tweeted out, Rick Patino did way less in at least provable in the stripper gate in Louisville and they stripped the Cardinals of their final four national championship. I guess Michigan is just more important to the NCAA. It is so funny. The investigative arm of the NCAA, the sanctioning weight of the NCAA has been so diminished over time. It was worth it. Connor Stallions was worth it to the University of Michigan. I’ve said this a lot over the last 20 years. If you really want bad behavior to stop, you have to make the punishment severe enough where the cheating will stop. But they don’t really care. They don’t. Checks clear. We’re good. It will cost Michigan probably in the neighborhood of I don’t know 25 $30 million in fines. That’s not insignificant, but still you’d trade it. You’d pay 30 million bucks to win a national championship. So, write the check. And who knows, maybe Michigan’s got uh a booster like they’ve got at Kansas, who just uh paid like $300 million, wrote a check for $300 million to the Jay-Hawks uh athletic department to help fund the revenue sharing. Unbelievable. Uh all right, Mike K from the Charlotte Observer is in Houston. I assume he is not completely liqufied at this moment. Yesterday was apparently a uh a sweltering day. He joins us on the Adam Gold show. Was it as bad as all that? Uh I don’t feel like I’ve stared into the uh Ark of the Covenant, but I’m It was pretty uh It was pretty rough. It It was It was warm. I I’ll say that. How did the players deal with it? I know there was one player who was taken off on a cart. They said that was heat related. I mean, it’s going to it’s hot here. I mean, they’ve they’ve been practicing. I know the last two weeks have been somewhat I mean, really mild, not somewhat, they’ve been very mild by North Carolina Summers, but before that, it was uh gross in Spartanberg uh as well. So, how have the players dealt with it? Um, you know, we talked to Travon Merig after practice and he’s from around the area and he said this was actually pretty this was pretty comfortable for a Houston summer I guess because it it had rained recently. Um, but Nick Scordon uh had to take a a front seat cart ride in because he even with the cooling trailer that they had there that the Panthers also have, he wasn’t able to kind of like chill out. Um, they think they’ll be okay. But yeah, I mean it was it was a hot practice, but they seem to be relatively unscathed. Um, but Bryce Young heated up through the air connecting with Xavier Legette and McMillan and and some of his weapons for some pretty big highlight plays. So, uh, it’ll be interesting. I mean, I I I’m interested to see how fatigued they are coming off of his practice head into this pres game. No, no doubt about that. That definitely has a a lingering effect. Mike K, Charlotte Observer. You can follow him on Twitter at mike_e_k with an e at the end. So let me let me ask you about Bryce, not just in the joint practices, but I I I sort of posited yesterday that man, it’s possible based on the stuff that I have seen that Bryce might be look it looks to me like he’s taking another pretty big step forward. He just looks so much more comfortable and assured uh going through everything he’s got to go through. What have you seen from him through what three and a half, four weeks now? I mean, I think he looks like he’s in in in line with his wide receivers, like his tight ends. I mean, he made a play yesterday where he improvised while the pocket was being kind of smashed in front of him. Austin Corbett finally anchored at center and he hit a a tight end down the seam for what was like a 20 to 25 yard catch and run. Like I it just seems like he’s flowing in this offense. He gets it. He knows it and he’s he’s making the most of it. Mike Kay is joining us here on the Adam Gold Show. Isn’t it funny how when you have like a whole bunch of good receiving targets, you seem like a much better quarterback? Yeah. Funny how that happens, right? I mean, I think from from the standpoint of like the offense being improved over the last two years, I mean, there’s no question. And I think he trusts his offense. I think he trusts his head coach. And I think, you know, in turn, he’s trusting the play calls. Yeah. Again, that’s uh all all of these things work hand in hand. I think in retrospectively, we’ll all remember uh just what he had to deal with as a rookie from a fractured coaching staff and too many differing ideas with how they wanted to run offense, uh a bad offensive line and no weapons and we will go, you know what, maybe it was unfair to judge anything based on that season and certainly the beginning of year two wasn’t great either, but he certainly looks like he came out on the other side. Uh some of the things that have uh raised some red flags for you would be what, Mike? I mean, I think you know, the safety position, the inside linebacker position are not priority positions in this defense. Typically, unless you have a top 10 player at either position that’s the case, you know, Luke Keequley and Thomas Davis and all those guys, they made the linebacker position a priority here over the years. But I think at this point, you know, when you’re stuck with Christian Roseboom and Trevan Wallace and then Nick Scott at safety, it’s kind of tough to to kind of wrap your mind around that. That’s why I think, you know, you have a surplus of talent on the offensive line, you have a surplus of talent at wide receiver. Maybe you use that surplus to kind of help you in other directions. But um I think for the Panthers like they need to kind of figure out that back end because up the middle they are kind of weak once you get past that first level. Yeah. I mean not not a lot of big- time tacklers at the middle of the the second level of defense. What is depth an issue for you as well? Um certainly not on offense. I think on defense, uh, they’re good on the defensive line. They have the second highest defensive line payroll in the league this year. Uh, they have the highest offensive line payroll in the league this year. Um, outside linebacker, they’re fine. I I really think Nick Scon’s going to be a player. Same with Princy Yuman Mean. They really like what Pat Jones brought to the lineup. DJ Wanom’s having an okay summer. Uh, corner, I think they feel really good about the two starters and JC Horn and Mike Jackson. both your Mike Jackson’s having a terrific camp um here. And then Shaw Smith Wade was probably the MVP of training camp before the preseason started. He’s gotten a little bit quieter, but he’s still having a good summer. And then, you know, Cory Thornton’s kind of been one of the talks of camp. He’s an undrafted rookie who is basically the way I explain him is is that JC Horn was built in a lab. They just forgot to add the speed element. Um and so those four played well. Mar Bartholomew’s played much better than anticipated. I think their corner room is actually a lot better than a lot of us projected and you can see why they like that group better than we do. Safety, it just depends on how they’re going to handle the starting group. If Nick Scott’s out there and Demani Richardson and Lean Ransom are the backups, fine. I just think like there’s no way you keep Richardson and and Ransom on the sideline for Nick Scott. I that’s just I mean Nick Scott has a role in this team. He is a very good leader. He’s extremely wellliked. He’s good on special teams. But he he should be kind of like a cog in the machine and not necessarily, you know, the hood emblem on a on a on a on a defense. Mike K Charlotte Observer covers the Panthers for that paper at mike_e_k on Twitter. Two more things and then we will let you uh go. I don’t know what you’re going to do. Towel off. I’m not sure. Uh but the I I want to I asked this question of uh another friend of mine uh basically covers a team Will Palashik. I said give me your three starters at wide receiver for game one against Jacksonville given health given everybody healthy. Who are the three starters? Um Titho McMillan, Xavier Legette, Adam Tin. Um he said Jaylen Coker over over Xavier Legette. Yeah, I mean I think Toker needs to play, but I also say his best attribute is you could probably use him at slot, Z, and X. And so him being the primary backup to all three of those guys is advantageous. I think Legette’s pretty much just a Z receiver and he’s having a good camp. Like I understand a lot of people are like really high on the underdog story of Coker. Um, you know, he didn’t really produce a lot in practice last training camp. He came back uh this year has like really gotten in tune with his body in the playbook. Um, and had a breakout practice the other day after the preseason game, but I got to tell you like I mean I I don’t think one guy has outplayed the other. I understand what the optics are and I understand that people want to like downplay Xavier Libert’s rookie season, but if people remember when Deontay Johnson was here at the exceiver spot and quarterback position was all in chaos, there was one guy who was actually producing pretty regularly and that’s Xavier Legette. Then once Demani Richardson was traded, he was moved to the X position and miscast as being like the number one guy. I think he’s better off as a number two wide receiver and I think he and McMillan actually complement each other better than maybe I projected during the draft. You know, it’s interesting you mentioned Deontay Johnson like he’s on like his fourth team since then, isn’t he? Uh third. So it would be he So what the timeline was he got traded to the Ravens. The Ravens cut him. He went to the Texans. The Texans cut him. the Ravens picked him up again so that they could have his his uh you know his uh compensatory pick rights became a free agent signed with the Browns. So technically I mean it’s his fourth stop but it’s his 13th. Okay, that’s the that’s still a lot. Uh that is still a lot. Mike K, final thing as we get ready for uh after the joint uh joint practice which appar CJ Strad looked pretty good too, didn’t he? Yeah, I mean I was mostly focused on the Panthers offense and just the way the training camp is set up. They’re two different fields and they’re working at the same time so they can get in a normal amount of reps. From what I saw, yeah, he he hit his targets. They have a similar situation where they have about seven or eight rosterable wide receivers and I think he does a really good job of spraying the ball around the field and and spreading it. And um that’s going to be an interesting decision they have to make uh at their wide receiver position as well. All right. Now, what what you wrote about yesterday, the battle for the placekicking job, Matthew Wright, Ryan Fitzgerald, how would you handicap that right now? I mean, here’s the thing. Like, Ryan Fitzgerald, from a politics standpoint, simply had to just compete with Matthew Wright, right? Like, it just had to be even. And I think Matthew Wright, who’s an NFL nomad, who’s been on more NFL teams than I’ve had coffee this morning, uh, you know what I mean? Like, he’s really held his own. Honestly, I think he’s been a tad bit better. Uh, I mean, I gave him almost no shot of winning this job coming into the summer. He’s really surprised me. I’m I’m happy to be wrong because a longer kicker competition is more interesting. And I think the Panthers are handling this the mature way. They’re letting it all play out. This is a big decision. You decided you didn’t want to resign Eddie Pinier, who had been here for three years and had kicked relatively well from a percentage standpoint, and then you bring in a guy who I mean is the utter definition of a journeyman. Um to compete with a rookie who his senior year didn’t miss a kick. So like it’s it’s a it’s an interesting battle. Um I don’t think it’s going to come down to like a missed field goal in the preseason. If a guy misses a bunch of field goals, then I think it it’ll be done. But like I think you need to watch how the kickoffs are handled because that’s become such an important factor with the touchback now being at the 35. Yeah, I I saw a breakdown of uh the Panthers like line drive low kick that lands in the field of play which at that point teams your uh you can your like the kickoff coverage team can then break the line of scrimmage. So uh there there’s a lot of strategy involved in that. Uh and a couple years ago we had punter battles. Now we’ve got kicker battles. Kicker battles are always fun. Uh, stay tuned to Mike K on Twitter. Mike_E_K on Twitter. Thank you very much. I appreciate your time, sir. We’ll talk when it’s cooler. Thanks for having me. You got it. Mike K here on the Adam Gold Show. Uh, all right. I want to cut I want to talk about a couple of other things. First of all, the whole Michigan story is hysterical in how the NCAA is essentially afraid to really punish. It would have been very simple to do this because we all saw it happen. It would have been very easy to simply say, Michigan, your national championship of two years ago has been vacated. Sorry, it is unofficial. They did that with Southern Cal during the Reggie Bush saga. It has been done before. They did it in basketball with Louisville. Heck, Memphis was suspended. Uh I think wasn’t Memphis’s final four in like ’08 also vacated. It happens all the time. The NCAA has done this a lot. They can’t take the good feeling away from you. They can’t take the uh national championship celebration from you. All they can do is take it out of the record books. How many people have a record book? It really only matters in barroom debates. Michigan, we just won a national championship. Oh, no you didn’t. We all still have the same arguments. We all know that Michigan cheated to whatever extent you want to believe. Fine. And or rather not what extent you want to believe, to what effect. It’s in many ways, and this is the argument that baseball players used. Um, well, steroids didn’t help me hit the ball. I mean, probably not. So, but we all know you used them. Steroids didn’t help Barry Bonds make contact, but the cream and the clear made something possible, easier, stronger, that he could hit what was the number 763, whatever the number ended up being. I actually, that’s weird that I don’t remember the number. So, I think most people remember that Michigan won the national championship and we can’t pretend that away. But the NCAA could have simply said, “Yeah, for all of this stuff, for all of the the cheating, yeah, we’re gonna we’re gonna erase it from the record book.” Because they’ve done that before. Would Michigan have sued? Probably. I mean, I don’t know what else I don’t know what else to say. You can sue you want. Like, a lot of schools sue all the time. North Carolina litigated their way out of how many sanctions for the academic malfeasants. They litigated their way completely out of that. Hey, it’s, you know, you do what you got to do, what you want to do. But, man, the NCAA just punted. Absolutely punted. Um, all right. When we come back, we didn’t dig into I I we had this conversation with our guy, uh, Ben, the stats guy, I want to talk a little bit about a couple of Carolina Hurricanes contracts that were signed recently and how valuable to the team they could be going forward. The Adam Gold Show. It’s the Adam Gold show. I’m Adam Gold. Victoria on the ones and twos. Panthers are uh week two of the preseason in Houston. That should be fun. Uh we will see the starters again. I don’t know how long we’ll see them. Uh certainly like to see two, three, maybe a, you know, a full quarter. Uh well, three three possessions will definitely be a full quarter. Uh I don’t know, maybe maybe go the first half and then give way, but uh look forward to seeing that. Um and real quick before we before we get to what I wanted to talk about about the uh the Hurricanes and some contracts, you know, the NBA, they announced their schedule yesterday, and we’re not going to dig into the schedule. The teams that you would expect to be playing on Christmas Day will be playing on Christmas Day. All of the teams you would uh expect to see will be playing on Christmas Day. Uh you know like Knicks, Nuggets, Warriors, Lakers, all of them. Um I think Maverick Mavericks are also playing. But what some of you might not know is that the NBA is no longer on TNT and there will be games on Amazon Prime. There will be NBC is back m which means you’ll hear the John Tesh you know NB NBA on NBC music again but here’s what’s going to be a complicating factor for NBA fans and I think there are a substantial number of NBA fans in the audience. I know if my son happens to be listening he’s a huge fan of the association. So, if you want to watch the NBA and their national broadcasts, you got to know you got to know the alignment. Monday, Peacock. Now, can find games on t on uh ESPN or NBC on Monday, Peacock. Tuesday, you’ll get games on NBC and Peacock. Wednesday, ESPN. Thursday, Amazon. Friday, Amazon and ESPN. Saturday, Amazon and ABC. Sunday, Amazon, NBC, and Peacock. And I believe the Saturday games on ABC uh will I believe flip to night games in the second half of the year, but they’re all over the place. All over the place. You know, in the last two years, we basically saw them really in three places. We saw them on TNT, ESPN or ABC, and the occasional NBA TV game. But yeah, it’s you’re you’re going to have to know where to find them. Uh most nationally televised game, Lakers, Thunder, Warriors, Knicks, each with 34 nationally televised games. I watch the Knicks a lot in the playoffs. I don’t know how you do it. No, I don’t know how you watch them. I think to me they’re an unwatchable team. They just the games plaid. Yeah, they just pl have a list of those. Yeah. Yeah. Of unwatchable teams. Yeah. Just completely unwatchable. Various sports. Yeah. Well, now the teams that I don’t like, I’m more inclined to like the Knicks. I grew up a Knicks fan. Doesn’t doesn’t impact me that, you know, one way or the other when they win or lose, but I would still consider myself a Knicks fan. Yeah. Uh although I did publicly divorce them a long time ago and then they went to the NBA finals that year. Oh no. Yeah. The Latrell Spreewell year and um I they they dragged me back in. All right. So I wanted to talk about uh really specifically the Jackson Blake contract. had a conversation uh with if you go back and you remember you know a lot of our conversations during the playoffs uh we had uh Ben Seltzer in here the the stats nerd and we were he’s just like an old school hockey fan and we were talking about Jackson Blake’s contract and I think if you’re a Hurricanes fan you look at Jackson Blake and Logan Stanov and you can say this the exact same thing that man the Hurricanes have a lot of faith in a couple of 22y old players who are about to enter their second full season in the NHL. You know, Blake played one game or two games, whatever it was, at the end of the previous season, and then last year, we all know what Jackson Blake did. Stanovven played a handful of games at the end of the previous season, played in the playoffs, was good in the playoffs, uh, and this year was a rookie throughout. And roughly they had the same similar offensive numbers, Blake and Stanovven. Stankovven signed an 8-year contract, $6 million a year. Blake’s contract, also eight years. Uh the cap hit after deferred money is factored in, is about 5.1 per year for Carolina, but there’s more money in that contract than it is just $5.1 million. But just for accounting purposes, for the salary cap, it’s 5.1 million. And we were talking about why like and we actually had Eric Tulski on a couple of weeks ago and he explained because that’s a risk for in both cases it’s a risk. It’s a risk for the team because hey, what if this was Jackson Blake’s best season? Then we just saw it. Same thing for Logan Stanovven. What if we just saw the best that they had? Well, those contracts are bad. Flat out bad. And that is the risk the team is willing to assume. Personally, I think we’re going to see better from both players. And if that is the case, how much better will determine whether we ultimately go why in the heck did he sign that contract then? Because let me tell you this, here is my uh I don’t really have a great well my comp for Logan Stanovven is kind of Chad Larose in the way he plays a relentless way that he goes about his business. And we don’t know, by the way, whether uh Stankovven will ever be a center for the Hurricanes. He is certainly one of the two options to slide to the middle and take a swing at being the second line center for Carolina, but that to me is the comp for Stanov. And maybe he and maybe he’s a better player than Chad Larose, which is very possible. And I’m not using this that comp because Larose is also an undersized player. He always played bigger than he actually was. And I think Stankovven plays bigger than he actually is. So it also bothers me to always make everything about uh how tall Logan Stanovven isn’t. I mean, he’s a really good hockey player. If if Stankhovven becomes a 50 to 60 point guy, then $6 million a year is at worst for the team good value. But my comp for Blake, and maybe I’m crazy, I don’t think I am, but maybe I am. My comparison for Jackson Blake is Teavo Terrain. When you watch Blake play, and he’s better at certain things than Terrain ever was, and he’ll probably never be as good as Terrain and in certain areas uh of his like vision and things like this. But I think when you watch Jackson Blake play, what you see is an offensive creator. I don’t think he’s ever going to be an enormous goal scorer, although we can score goals like Terravan, but I think he is going to be a high assist player. And I mean, I can see Blake being a, you know, 20, 45 guy depending on where he plays in a lineup, how much power play time he gets. And if we are sitting here in two years talking about Jackson Blake as a 55 to 65 point guy per year, we’re going to look remember where the salary cap is going. It is going uh in two years it’s going to be at 113 million. So if we are sitting here in a couple of years and Jackson Blake is a 55 to 65 point player, $5.1 million in a cat pit is going to look like highway robbery on the part of the Hurricanes. And this is where we bring it back and go, Jackson Blake, why did you sign that contract? Now, just to show you how it’s not always going to work out the way you want, the Hurricanes have two glaring examples of long-term contracts not becoming huge value deals for the team. Yes. Berry Code Gini at $4.8 8 million to this point. That hasn’t worked out. Now, it’s not $8.4 million. It’s $4.8 million. And with the C cap going up, it’s less of a financial hurt. Although it is a financial hurt, but it’s less of one because the cap has gone up so much. But they are paying they they paid for a player they projected to be better, more impactful. The real one that we need to see some return. And when it was signed, I thought, my gosh, that’s going to be a great contract, but Andre Fetchnikov has yet to live up to the player that was drafted second overall. Um, well, I shouldn’t say that. I think before the knee injury, he was trending to be that guy. And I don’t think we can blame the knee injury for what we have seen. I think because Andre is healthy now. He’s not slower or less strong. But Andre’s game last year was so disappointing. He showed up in the first two rounds of the playoffs and we went, “There he is. I recognize that number 37, but we all thought that when he signed the contract, and we are halfway through it. When he signed the contract, we thought $7.75 million is going to be a bargain. Hasn’t been a bargain yet. And it’s one of he is one of those players when we talk about what does Carolina need is one of those players who if he were to at least come closer to what we expect from him year in and year out. He would be a differencemaker for Carolina. He can be a catalyst in so many ways, but he has to produce. He has to perform. Last year until the playoffs, it was really a tough season. It was tough to watch. It was tough to be honest in reporting it. I’ll give you uh one very quick snippet of a conversation. And I’m going to leave the other person in this conversation out of it. But I had conversations with people who absolutely wondered if Svetchnikov would be healthy extr in the playoffs. Imagine that. Just imagine had the Hurricanes done that. They’ll I don’t believe Rod Brenda Moore will ever healthy scratch Andre Fetchikov. No matter how badly he plays, it would have to be an injury for Andre not to play. Right or wrong, it would have to be an injury. All right. When we come back, a Friday edition of one-timers. And I think is very much a long shot to be selected by captain Keegan Bradley. If unless Keegan Bradley is not the captain anymore because he picks himself. Talk about that with Damon Hack next hour. Right now, one-times. [Music] Okay, so like you mentioned, you can uh leave them in the YouTube chat or you can add us on Twitter B to the Victoria with underscores. And first up, we’re going to the YouTube stream. Let’s do it. So, uh, we have, “Do you think any Kane’s rookies play well enough in camp to force their way onto the roster? And if they do, who would be forced out of the current lineup?” Uh, very very I I I had a similar question to this I think yesterday or the day before. Much like Jackson Blake surprised people a year ago and my guess is forced Tyson Jo to the minor leagues. Bradley Nadau could, if you’re talking about a somebody among the forward group, he had a great year for um the Chicago Wolves last year uh scored a bunch of goals. And if that’s the case, I have a hard time answering the question without saying a guy I really like and a guy the Hurricanes signed, Eric Robinson. You know, he could end up being a healthy extra. I mean, I’m not going to I don’t think it’s a Coke and Emmy deal. Coin Emmy is going to have to fight for a spot on the team. And it makes it even more of a problem if uh I guess if if Cookami plays as a number two center cuz I think that’s still on the table for Carolina that Cookami starts the season in a second line center role. Don’t don’t roll your eyes at that. I mean I think that is an option for Carolina. I don’t think it’s the most desirable one, but I think it’s an option. All right, next up. This was a follow-up to that question. It’s assumed Nadau would most likely be the the rookie to break out, but could there be someone else in your opinion? Yeah, the a young defenseman, Charles Alexis Lgo, but they’ve got seven NHL defenseman right now. So, I it’s going to take an injury to get LGO in. The advantage that he would have is that he is right-handed and Carolina right now has seven left-handed defenseman. Seven, I’m sorry. I’m sorry. Five of seven are left-handed. L Charles Alexis Lgo, who played at uh uh Quinnipic with uh with Rod’s son, Skyler, who’s a Hurricanes prospect, I guess, still. Uh, so that’s my my guess is if we were looking for somebody else, it would be him. Okay. And probably last but not least, we’ve got another one from the YouTube stream. On a scale from 100% to 100%, what are the chances that Cory Thornton makes the 53man roster? 100% to 100%. That’s what was written. I I will go uh 98%. [Laughter] Good luck. Guess they’re a big fan of Cory Thornton. I guess they uh I guess they are. Uh who isn’t who isn’t a big fan of Corey Thornton. Chapel Hill to Charlotte, Greenville to Greensboro. You know that he loves to be on the practice field. He loves this stuff and he will be tested by the ups and downs of the season. There’s a a scenario where this goes poorly. the message doesn’t keep delivering and that all the advantages in the world can’t change the way an 18 to 23-year-old acts on a Saturday. So like there there is that possibility. But my bold prediction from the CBS Sports ACC preview is that Bill Bich ends up winning coach of the year. See Adam Gold Chip Patterson from Wednesday. I’ll say this, if Bill Bich is your coach of the year, probably means that Carolina won 10 games because I think honestly that’s what it would take. Schedule’s not hard. I’m not going to say the schedule is an absolute breeze because while TCU isn’t great, it’s a lossable game for Carolina on Labor Day. Gosh, we’re not that far from it. Two weeks from uh Monday. two weeks from Monday, right around the corner. Yep. Um that’s a lossable game and a game at Central Florida lossable. But if they do what they hope they will do, which is go 4-0 in the in the non-conference, yes, you’ve got a week off, then Clemson, then another week off, uh and then a trip to Cal. There’s not a ton left again at state home against Duke at Syracuse probably will be. They are losable games. But part of the reason I was so high on the success of this season, we don’t know how good the football team’s going to be, is because I believe Bill Bich will be very good at assessing his own team’s weaknesses, avoiding them, and exploiting other teams weaknesses. I think he’ll get the most out of the group if he does that and they win. nine or 10 times, I think you’re talking about a a legit coach of the year candidate. So, Chip Patterson in that regard is right. Uh, real quick, I want to talk about a little bit about uh some college football things as it pertains to the ACC. We know how big a start it is. How uh really for the entirety of the league, but Carolina’s got Carolina, the ACC’s got three, I think three teams, maybe a fourth that could be in line for a playoff spot. Actually, I saw Louisville in many cases listed as the ACC’s second playoff team. That would be exceptional if if Louisville is part of that. But I think the top three are Clemson, SMU, and Miami. And they each have what I believe are, you know, obstacles in the opening part of the season. Obviously, Clemson opens with LSU. I also think the game at Georgia Tech in week three not going to be a breeze. Georgia Tech is going to be that team, meaning that’s the one that’s going to screw it up for somebody. They were the first team that screwed it up for Miami. Man, they nearly screwed it up for Georgia. It’s a game that the Yellow Jackets absolutely should have won. Clemson also has the game at South Carolina uh at the very end, but I’m talking about at the beginning of the season. Clemson, LSU, a big one. SMU’s got to play Baylor. Baylor, a lot of people I have seen is have made them the favorites to win the Big 12. That’s a big test for SMU, uh, a club that didn’t play a great non-conference schedule a year ago. I think they played BYU in week two and lost that game, right? Um, and Miami opens with Notre Dame. If the ACC can have their best teams do well in big-time non-conference games, I don’t it was probably three weeks ago where I made a list of the games just in the opening week. Now SMU Baylor is in week two and in the opening week I talked about the non-conference games that the league has to win. Well, I’m not going to put Miami Notre Dame as Miami has to win because that would be assigning maybe a little bit more importance to what Miami is than is proper. But if Miami beats Notre Dame to start the season and then in week four at home beats Florida, we are talking about a team that will have a very good chance of getting deep into October when they play at Louisville as an undefeated team. Miami schedule start uh pretty tough. They have trips to uh it’s not at Louisville, it’s home against Louisville, but uh at Florida State with hey, that’s a rivalry game. You have you never know at SMU. And we all know that uh Pittsburgh is always a problem for somebody too. And Pittsburgh’s got good players, but Clemson, SMU, and Miami all have difficult games early. And that’s where the ACC will have, you know, needs those teams to win. You’re not going to win them all, but you have to win enough to establish that your league is not well, they’re no good. Cannot have Clemson getting blown out by Georgia last year. Can’t have that. ACC’s got to be better and their best teams have to be better because then it helps to assign value to the rest of the league. And North Carolina plays a role in that. uh as does NC State, as does Georgia Tech, uh with their first game of the season at Colorado. Don’t lose that game. All right. So, couple of uh a couple of things I wanted to uh uh bring up about the NFL. The first is this. So, I there’s a story at the top of uh ESPN’s queue of news stories in a survey in which most NFL retirees would play again despite the costs, meaning the cost to their health. And anybody that has heard us talk about how the league deals with concussions, the bigger problem isn’t necessarily the league. And it’s a problem. Look, we don’t have to we we don’t have to pretend as though the league didn’t hide science. They did. But I said this throughout, the players all knew and accepted the risks. They just did. The players were oftentimes the biggest violators of whatever rules there would be to stay in the game two years ago to a tongue of Vioa. Was it two years ago or three years ago where they picked him up? Yeah. Wobbly. Two seasons ago. Yeah. And basically let him stay in the game. Mhm. Players want to play. Players want to be there for their teammates always. They don’t want to come out of the game. That now we have independent spotters. And if they if anybody suspects, oh, I that could be a concussion. You’re off the field and you got to go get checked. You might miss it. And by the way, it happens in other sports, too. Happens in hockey a lot. The players know the risks. They accept the risks. My argument has always been, stop trying to make the game safer. You’re not going to do it. The nature of football is collision, collision, collision every play, multiple times. a lineman will probably what they call it like uh you’re in however many you’re in a car wreck every play, right? There’s simply no way to make the game safe. Safer, sure, to a degree. My argument has always been the league should just have to take care of the players. I think you owe it to the players. Yeah, I know they’ve assumed risk, but it’s not like written in small print on the back of a ticket to a baseball game that if you get hit by a foul ball uh in the face that yeah, we’re not responsible. Yeah, I know you’re not responsible, but I mean, in in a lot of ways, you are. So the league can’t medical waiver or they shouldn’t be allowed to medical waiver themselves out of responsibility. They should take care of their former players. And we can debate whether or not they really do. But I I’m 100% not surprised that most NFL retirees would do it again. Oh yeah. Where do you get that? Where do you get that thrill, right? Where do you get that? Yeah. And that’s why it’s so hard for these guys when they retire to to replace the feeling of a game day. And this go this goes for any sport. That’s why they stay in it too long. Just a game too long, a season too long, a year too long. Yeah. Well, it happens less in the National Football League because of the nature of contract. Speaking of, and this is the other thing, um the NFL Players Association has put on administrative leave of one of their attorneys for behavioral issues apparently around the uh uh the PA. But remember their executive director Lloyd Howell resigned like a late on a either I think it was a Friday night. Yeah. About three weeks ago. We talked about this when this situation was boiling over. How he was uh a hireer that had zero background in unions law labor. He’s not a lawyer. I don’t understand how you hired an executive director of the players association that’s not a lawyer to that’s what you should be especially coming off of Demora Smith who was a prosecutor right makes no sense. So Pablo Tori most famous for his incessant reporting on Jordan Hudson. Yes, I am in the middle. I’m actually into a third episode of a 4ep episode I think saga of exposing corruption in the NFLPA. Now, I’m I’m I’m not ready to make a determination as to what I feel about all of it, but as we sit here today, I don’t know how the NFL Players Association doesn’t completely top to bottom completely change their personnel. my read having read enough of the stories, a lot of it on ESPN by Don Vanada uh and and other reporters on this and who knows how much longer that will go on now that the NFL owns 10% of ESPN, but my read on the situation is that the NFL PA is corrupt and they are actually working with the NFL at the detriment detriment or to the detriment of their own players. And I don’t know how that can be allowed from a player perspective. It is staggering what you read. Just to go back to the the what started all of this in the early part of this year, an arbitration hearing was um handed down and buried by the players association and the league. The league won an arbitration hearing which said that there was no collusion around the league based on the desire for players to get guaranteed contracts. We all know that this is the NFL players. There’s only one NFL player with a uh who negotiated a full guaranteed contract. I should say two cuz Kirk Cousins just I believe did get uh a three-year guarantee, but I’m not sure that it was fully guaranteed lock, stock, and barrel. Deshun Watson had one five years, what was it, 230 million with Cleveland, which has certainly turned out well, but the longstanding debate and want for the uh NFL players association was we want guaranteed contracts. Well, not even Lamar Jackson could get that. He was holding out for one, right? And nobody nobody offered even tried to offer sheet Lamar Jackson. The Atlanta Falcons went into a season with Desmond Ritter as their quarterback rather than even have a conversation with Lamar Jackson. Huh, that’s odd because he was available. Would Baltimore have matched the offer? Maybe. Probably. No collusion there. But the NFL, because it was circumstantial evidence, the NFL won the arbitration ruling, so they were not liable financially. But when the report was released and Pablo Tory somehow got a copy of it, it showed that there was collusion. Even though it was circumstantial, there were just suggestions of collusion. And the players association, which should have used that as leverage, and I guess still can going forward, buried it. It only came out because Tore was relentless in his pursuit of it. The players association allowed it to be buried. How on earth can you represent your your constituents who want guaranteed contracts know in that document that the NFL did collude and you agreed to bury it? Why? That story is unfolding. The players association is in for a major upheaval. Damon Hack of Golf Channel. Second playoff event going on now in Baltimore. He will join us next. From the heels, touchdown to the Canes. Discover’s accepted where I like to shop. Come on, baby. Get with the times. Right. So, we shouldn’t get the parachute pants. These are making a comeback. I think Discover is accepted at 99% of places that take credit cards nationwide based on the February 2025 Nilson report. Adam Gold. Adam Gold. Cuz if interrupting is part of the talent, then she wins. Giving an RBF face. Yeah. Oh, wow. I mean, everybody saw it. I didn’t say it. I That picture did not say that when they were asking Bill and she interrupts him and they look at her. That’s evil. Like, yeah. I was waiting for the lights to come out of her pupils. Like, you’re not you’re not wrong. The Adam Gold Show. See, Adam Gold show. I am Adam Gold. Victoria on the ones and twos. Small break from football. We’ll get back to it. Um, second playoff spot or second playoff tournament in the PGA Tour ongoing, the BMW Championship in Baltimore. Four years ago, that was the scene of Patrick Kentlay making, I don’t know, half a mile worth of putts on Bryson Dashambo in one of the all-time epic playoff wins for anybody on tour. I think Robert McIntyre made almost as many feet worth of putts yesterday. But look who’s second right now. Tommy Fleetwood is relentless. It’s got to happen at some point. Damon Hack of Golf Channel joins us on the Adam Gold Show. Uh, first of all, sir, thank you so much for your time and that’s where I want to start because I watched last week and I wanted Tommy to win. He is just such a obviously such a nice guy and a great player. Has done everything but win on the PGA Tour and win a major. He hasn’t done that either. Um, but your interview with him after the match, after the round when he I mean, did he blow it like he blew it at Travelers? Probably not, but close. And I just thought you just you let him do the talking and I just thought that was outstanding. How are you, Adam? I’m great. It’s kind of you to say. Great to be back with you on this Friday. And buddy, I got more text messages about that interview than maybe I’ve gotten from any interview. People want Tommy to win. They they they felt for him. They feel for him. They thought it was great that he chose to talk. You could tell he was processing what happened as he was answering my questions. And you’re right, I tried to stay out of the way, ask short questions, and let him try to go through what happened. Then he talked about the the great birdie on 12 and 13, the par save on 14, the birdie on 15. And then he said, you know, I didn’t par the par 516. Got a bit of a soft bogey on 17. And he’s just trying to figure out like how is this happening? Yeah. Again, and I appreciated his time, his honesty. Had he said, Damon, I don’t I don’t want to talk. I would have I would have thought no less of him because the story of 2025 outside of Rory in the career grand slam and Scotty winning four times two of those majors has been Tommy Fleetwood’s you know great white whale search for a PGA Tour win great way of putting it the white whale the other story has been players not talking right Colin Morawa very pop very you know um publicly said I don’t owe you guys anything we go back a year uh in the summer to Rory Mroy who finished second to Bryson Dashambo at Pinehurst uh exiting the parking lot before anybody had a chance to talk. Uh and yeah, it’s their right to do it. I don’t think it’s a great look when they do it. Uh and I don’t think it has to define who they are as people, but it can define who you are when you do speak. And that’s where I think Tommy Fleetwood, if he didn’t have everybody rooting for him, he absolutely does now. Damon Hack, uh, joining us from Golf Channel here on the Adam Gold Show. So, I I know you and I have texted about this. The Keegan Bradley is the captain of the US Rider Cup team. Uh, is playing not so hasn’t played great the last few weeks. Uh, he’s going to be in the tour championship. Do you think he picks himself in two weeks? I don’t think he can. I I know that some of the guys on the team are saying, “Look, you’re one of the best, not just 12 Americans, but 12 best players in the world.” Even if he’s not playing his best right now, they know his fire for that event. I don’t think he can do both to the utmost ability. I think he’s going to be a captain and a player. He won’t be as good of a captain and and I don’t think he’ll be as good of a player. How do you think about taking out Rory Mroy or John Ramen singles when you got to think about well who’s going to play this afternoon who’s going to rest? I I think the fiery type of competitor that Keegan is, he’d be better off just saying, you know what, I’m putting all my eggs in the coaching basket or all my eggs in the player basket. It takes two different energies. One is a more heartfall soul follow. The other is you have to be clinical and cold and calculating and objective. And I just don’t think you can wear all of those hats on a knife’s edge type of competition that the RDER Cup is. I think he could still be a great captain if he’s doing that solely. I think he could be a great player if he if he’s doing that solely. I think it becomes a little bit muddy, especially since he’s not playing that great right now. You know, let the hot players, let the Cameron Young’s, Ben Griffins, you know, maybe Chris got her up, but get some new blood, young blood, guys who hit the ball an absolute mile. Cameron Young is one on that golf course as an amateur. Shot 64 on that golf course. I think there are some options Keegan has if he doesn’t want to muddy the waters and try to do both. Wait, Cam Young shot 64 at the black horse as a 17-year-old amateur and was the course record until Brooks Captain shot 63 there in the 2019 PGH championship. Cameron Young is from New York. Yeah. Has played that golf course a lot. Knows that type of uh golf course architecture well and hits the ball an absolute mile. He’s big, he’s strong, he’s a New Yorker. I think it would be uh a travesty if he’s not on this team. Oh, I think he’ll definitely be on the team, especially uh coming off not that long ago getting his first PGA Tour win. Um if Justin Thomas doesn’t play his way in automatically, he’s pretty close, but he hasn’t played well the last couple of weeks and he looks like he’s near the bottom of the leaderboard right now. Uh you have to assume Thomas will be a pick. Morau has had the best bad season uh of probably anybody uh at his stature. He’ll be a pick. I would imagine Patrick Kentlay with his record with Xander Schoffé as a partner in Rder Cup matches will likely be a pick as well. Ben Griffin you mentioned uh after that it’s kind of a gray area. There’s a lot of options. You mentioned got her up. It’s been a few weeks since he has play he has played actually pretty poorly the last few weeks. Do you think it matters or does the win at the Scottish and then backing that up with a good finish at Royal Port Rush do enough for Keegan Bradley to put him on that team because he’s a long hitter, too. One of the longest on the PGA Tour. He’s from New Jersey. Um, he would have a lot of people there. I mean, listen, it’s gonna be crazy. The support’s going to be out of this mind, out of this world type of noise. I think it’s going to be a one-of-a-kind Rder Cup. I think is going to be ratcheted up maybe to a point that it’s never been to watch Chris God walk shoulder-to-shoulder side by side with Rory Mroy in the same group and beat him at the Scottish and then back it up with a top five finish at the open championship at Royal Port Rush. That opened my eyes. But also the T-OT, it’s all carry. He absolutely moves it. That golf course has so many force carries. You might recall back in 02 there were guys that weren’t able to reach the fairways because it was cool. September could be a little bit dicey. It’s shoulder season in New York. I want horses. I want big strong dudes that can handle a 50°ree Friday morning and I think that both young and up uh not just by their birth but by their skill set uh they represent those qualities in spades. David Hack is joining us from Golf Channel. This is a true story. I was at the opening round in 2002 and um Chris Dearco, Scott Verplank, and I forget the third player, a similar length hitter, not very long, teed off the 10th hole. And I I believe it was I believe it was Verplank who hit his drive dead straight and it came up about three yards short of the fairway in the rough. And you saw him look in astonishment that he did not reach the fairway. Now in I believe in ‘ 09 they started the fairway a little earlier. So so that wouldn’t happen. But yes, that I remember being there in the 10th fairway watching that. Uh and that was remarkable to see a pro who thought he hit it well not be able to reach the fairway. That is as they say a very big ballpark. If Sam Burns were to play well and maybe win today, how does that play in? Because the way I look at it, it’s Burns, it’s got her up to a certain extent, maybe even a Jake Knap who also hits the ball a long way and is a great putter. Um, like it’s one of those guys might be in the mix and we’ll throw Keegan Bradley in there as well. But if Burns were to win, does that change the calculus? I I think it does in large part because he’s Scotty Shuffler’s best friend on the PGA Tour and the world number one has some has some weight uh to what he wants. Burns is also a fantastic putter which is necessary at a Ryder Cup and right now as we sit on this Friday, Sam Burns is tied for third. So he’s playing very well as we get late in this uh FedEx Cup playoff 3-week bonanza. So I think if Sam Burns shows any life and he played well at the US Open in Oakmont, lost in that playoff at the Canadian Open a couple of months ago, maybe six weeks ago now. I think Sam Burns because he’s been on these teams in the past because of his relationship with Scotty because his kind of preempt skill set is the putter for all those reasons and if he’s playing well this week, which he is, I think Sam Burns would have a spot on that team. All right, final question for Damon Hack because Sam Burns is tied with Harry Hall. Uh Harry Hall is one of my favorite characters to watch on the PGA Tour just with the hat with the you know the Dave Lennox driver driving cap he wears uh the old Payne Stewart cap. Uh has he’s had such a good year. Has he played his way into potential inclusion on that team? I haven’t, you know, read for a fact that John Rom is going to be on it, but I can’t imagine he’s not. Uh, but there are some, uh, logistical hurdles to overcome because, uh, there’s a dispute, uh, with him and the European tour. But could Harry Hall potentially knock off a Hoygard? You know, right now, Harry’s 19th in the European Rder Cup standings. They lock in their top six one week after the US team does. the US team locks in the top six after BMW. Then it’s the best Fred British Masters where Luke Donald’s top six will be locked in. Harry Hall have to win. He’d have to win this week um and or the tour championship in my opinion to make it um compel Luke Donald to have a pick for him. John Rom’s going to be on that team. Whatever DP world tour finds, he has to pay to be compliant. You’re going to want that. Two-time major champ, former world number one, a guy who lives and breathes the RDER Cup. Harry Hall, love the hat, won the Isco Championship last year, but doesn’t quite have the pedigree of of a ROM or even the Hoyard Twins. I think Harry Hall would have to pull a rabbit out of the hat, win this week or next week to even have a shot. Right now, it’s a very long shot for the dapper, Mr. Hall. He’s been a top 10 player like every week for a for two months it seems. He’s on every leaderboard I look at. Damon Hack Golf Channel. Golf today on Golf Channel at Damon Hackg on Twitter. Thank you so much, sir. Uh I will talk to you soon. Great catching up, buddy. Have a great weekend. You got it. Damon Hack uh of Golf Channel joining us here on the Adam Gold Show. I Harry Hodge is always on the leaderboard. It’s uh it’s bonkers to me. So, the University of Michigan was sanctioned today. I know people have uh you maybe you don’t remember you remember the Connor stallions the their own version of Spygate where Jim Harbaugh you know we can they deny that you know he set it up. He certainly uh sanctioned it with Connor Stallions buying, you know, tickets and paying people to go to games as they were spying on their opponents. Well, that whole thing came to a head and Harbaugh got a 10-year show cause. The assumption that he’ll ever coach in college again is laughable. Uh, Connor Stallions got an eight-year show cause. It is interesting that Stallion’s show cause was less than Harbaugh’s. Maybe it had something to do with the fact that Jim Harbaugh still has three years left on a show cause. Yeah, cuz they had other viol remember they had um practice violations all kinds that uh he was embroiled in cuz he got remember he got suspended also in the national championship season. They they suspended him for games. So he has a show cause that’s carrying over to when he whenever it is he does come back to college football if he ever does and he won’t. So, the 10-year show cause would be delayed by 3 years until the other show cause runs out. I mean, it’s all silly, isn’t it? The biggest part of what the NCAA is doing to Michigan will be the fine. And the fine will be substantial. It will it could end up being as much as $30 million, which I just blinked and Michigan just came up with. Unfortunately, the NCAA is very bad at a the investigative process always has been, always will be. No subpoena power that matters. And B, they’re bad at the punishment phase. They’re bad at both of those things, which is why it pays to cheat. So ultimately, even though the fine is substantial, the University of Michigan would do it again. I would ask any fan of any school, I’ll even ask I would ask an athletic director. We’re going to talk to Bubba Cunningham on Monday. Would you pay $30 million to win a national championship in football? I I’m not sure how he’ll answer it because you have to be very careful how you say these things, but I promise you the answer is yes. Even if the NCAA vacated Michigan’s national championship, which they did not, they vacated Southern Cal’s national championship because Reggie Bush was living in a house off campus, which was sort of mansiony while he was a college student back in the early uh part of this century. Southern Cal’s I think it’s the 2004 National Championship was vacated. They’ve done it before. They can do it again. We all watch Southern Cal win. So, it’s not like you can take that memory away. Th this this ain’t Hogwarts. We’re We’re not going obliviate and suddenly we forgot that it happened. The NCAA could do that though. They could they could say officially it’s gone. So Michigan wouldn’t be able to put it in their program like people buy programs anymore. Like it would it would be listed on the internet as oh no title vacated vi but we all saw it. They had a parade that there they will celebrate that national championship team forever. This it pays to cheat people. It pays to cheat. the punishment. I’m not going to say can never because it could. Here’s what the NCAA could have done. They could have said to Michigan, “You’re ineligible for postseason play.” That’s what they could have said to Michigan. That hurts. But they won’t do that because money. That’s why. All right, let’s take a break. We’ll come back. We’ll stretch. will place bets. Tons of stuff to do. We have a round table. You know what today is, Victoria? A Friday. Yes. You know what else today is? Uh, what is that? The 15th also. Yes. You know, tomorrow Mhm. is my 20th anniversary. Oh, my 20th wedding anniversary. Happy early anniversary. I would ask if you have like fun plans, but I don’t want to ruin any surprises. It’s all work in progress. Yeah, it’s all all a work in progress. There’s still time. No, no, I know what I want to do. We’ll see. Yeah. Uh, we’ll find out, right? Uh, anyway, wish me luck. Good luck. We’ll place bets next. Making more sports sense than social media trolls. I didn’t finish the uh the thought. Today, yes, is opening day in the Premier League. Championship started a week ago. Uh but we start uh in a top flight. best league, best soccer league in the world starts today. So, it will feature in when we place our bets. Oh, nice. Oh, also, uh, next hour, right right at the end of the show, we’re going to get a quick preview of the league, uh, if you are so inclined. Mhm. Because I am. Uh, all right. It’s time to stretch. Okay. Okay. Well, it’s very fitting that we’re stretching because today is also I knew you weren’t going here with this one. National relaxation day. I might be going there tomorrow. So, I was going to say you needed an idea, gentlemen. That’s always a great uh that’s always a great idea to like get a little spa package or whatever. Um, by the way, do you know what the uh for the like the appropriate gift for 20th anniversary? Uh, I know like some of them are paper, some are like wood, some are glass or whatever. I think China. Really? Yes. China. Fascinating. What if you don’t collect China? You said fascinating and you could not have been more like there there was so much sarcasm by So not fascinated at all by any fascinating. Almost to the point of falling asleep. Exactly. Well, you know, for to each their own, I guess. Yeah. I don’t have a china cabinet, so I can’t do anything with your china. This is fine. Not to interrupt, but I stopped by uh the my wife’s salon. Yes. Runs a salon right around the corner, actually. Uh I stopped at uh Wegman’s flowers. Yes. Oh, they have a great flower selection. Two dozen yellow roses. Yes. Also, uh a bottle of Procco. Ooh, I like the bubbly. Yeah. Um, was it too early at 9:20? Uh, I think they’ve probably seen crazier things at earlier times, so it’s okay. Oh, no. The person in front of me had a box wine. Oh, they they are starting at noon. Not even joking. Person in front of me in line was had a box of wine. Oh, yeah. I feel that person. If you are if you are buying boxed wine on a Friday, that thing is open right now in the in the car. I don’t even need it to cool down. Sham to bring straw right through the top of the box to the gas station to get a cup of ice. Like they don’t even care. They don’t even care. I feel that person. No, that’s fantastic. See, you’re on the right track, though. That’s That is a great relaxation day uh starter kit. So, Waggs has got it all. I’m telling you. Awesome. Stay away from the bakery section cuz that’ll get you too. It’s bad. I did. I stayed away in the baker. That’s a good idea. But they say on National Relaxation Day that we are supposed to have about 42% of your total day relaxing, which feels like a lot, but they’re also taking into consideration that normal people sleep 8 hours a day. I know. I know. quote normal people. So, uh they think that leaves two hours to, you know, recharge and whatnot. And they say your mind and body need it. So, if you don’t get it on like a regular basis, you should do it on the weekends. So, I know box wine lady is absolutely doing that right now. Oh, yeah. Can’t tell her nothing. No. Good merch. She’s living her best life. So, that’s that is awesome. You know who else is going to be living their best life in December? John Party. Now, I don’t listen to really a lot of country, but he’s a country artist for those who don’t know. My son is starting to listen to it, and like I’m not even joking. It’s disappointing. It’s disappointing. Well, every song somebody’s upset and they’re drinking their troubles away. Yes. On a porch with their dog. Every song in their truck. In their truck. All of that. all of it. So, but if you’re a big job party fan, you maybe shouldn’t tell him this part cuz then he’s going to want to watch it. But he is going to be the halftime show for Big 12 football championship. I know we’re ACC country right here. But there’s some people who might like, you know, Big 12 and or andor John Party. So, if you’re interested, he will be the halftime show. That’s December 6th at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. I’m sure it will still be humid there at that point. And he’s also going to be joined by marching bands from both competing schools, which I think is really cool because honestly, I wouldn’t hate a Super Bowl, like a nowaday Super Bowl, NFL to have marching bands compete or like shows. I And I’m saying this, I’m biased because I was in marching band, but they’re fun to watch, especially the college ones. Oh, it gets really intense. So, I like it. I think it’s fun. I think it’s entertaining. And I think a lot of people would like it. Then that might stop some of the debate of should we have a country artist? Should we have R&B? Should we have rock? Should we have pop? Yeah, who knows? People would probably still complain. What am I saying? So, John Party, he’s all fired up on this. Uh, it’s the first time it’s been a country artist, too. So, he plans on going big. Uh, he’ll probably have some box wine. and uh he uh he’s no stranger to any of this stuff because he announced the San Francisco 49ers draft pick before. He’s done college football playoff stuff. So, if you’re interested, December 6th, that will be 11:00 a.m. Central time. Oh, and tickets went on sale yesterday starting at 110 bucks. So, Oh, okay. There you go. Um by the way, you see North Carolina is has like this skybox now. Oh, yeah. is I I believe it’s just like a big open area. It’s almost like a uh like a big sports bar where you can watch. Okay. Yeah, it seemed like it’d be a pretty cool thing. They sold out everything else. Yeah. And so I believe that, you know, after certain priority members are taken care of, there might be some tickets available for that. You might want to check their uh check their website. Own little personalized shuderie board. I don’t look at you taking shots. That was a wine and cheese shot. Give me wine, cheese, and meats all day. That was a wine and cheese shot right there. I’m here for it. We has a delicious one, too. Maybe they’ll sponsor the show. And that would be awesome. Live there even more. If you want, by the way, if you want to buy anything Buffalo Bills related, that’s your place to go. Oh gosh, I know. Last time I was there, no offense to them. I get it. They’re from Buffalo. They originated in in Buffalo, but like you’re in North Carolina. I saw that. They have a whole display of Buffalo Bills stuff. And then Panthers has like one t-shirt. Yeah, they have a lot of hurricane stuff with the one here. Get it together, Wegman’s. But you know what? We are going to get some things together hopefully. Like our bets. Place your bets. Place your bets. I bet you slice into the woods a 100 bucks. Gambling is illegal at Bushwood, sir. And I never slide. Okay, you can owe me. I owe you nothing. I feel like I let everybody down yesterday. I We knew the Mets were going to lose. Mhm. And they did, but I I had it going over eight and a half and it did not. They lost 4-3 to the Braves. So, yeah. Uh I apologize cuz I did think it was they were handing money out. But Atlanta winning, if you just went with Atlanta to win, then then you’re a winner, right? Now, you don’t have to go dumb looking for extra value like I do. You could just simply Yeah, of course the Mets are going to lose. They’ve lost 13 of 15 right now. The Mets and the Yankees could both miss the playoffs. Uh yeah, and throw the Cubs in there, too, because they’re playing with their food. So, that’s fun. That’s where I steered people wrong yesterday. However, my Diamondbacks one did go through. I thought that the uh 12 and 1/2 was too high, so I took them and the under 12 and 1/2 and it came through to make up for the crappy Cubs. So, we’ll see. So, where are you starting? So, starting with UFC 319, huge pay-per-view fight this weekend. First up, Chase uh Hooper versus Alex uh Hernandez. And I think Chase, he is definitely a big upandcomer lately. I like him by submission plus 175. All right. Uh, we have two pre-season NFL football games tonight. I have no idea which players are going to play for these two teams, but we’re going to go with Atlanta to win at home to Tennessee and Kansas City to win on the road in Seattle. If those two things happen, plus 452. Nice. Oh, you’re going to love this next name. So, next up, Jessica Andrage versus Loopy Godz. I love Loopy. She’s super fun, and I think she’s going to win in this fight, probably go the distance. So, give me Loopy by the points, plus 105. All right. Uh, Major League Baseball today, the Brewers, who have won a billion in a row, are playing at Cincinnati today. Cincinnati two games behind the Mets for the last wild card spot. Seattle, a team that we all need to watch out for in the American League. Yep. Playing at the Mets. Reds and the Brewers 12game winning streak. Seattle adds more me misery to the Mets. When the Reds and the Mariners each win, it’s plus 345. Oh boy. Oh boy. Yeah, misery. are playing. So, we’ll see. My last one, it’s the main event. Draus Duplexi. Our offense was explosive by the end of a game and had good stats by the end of a game, but we were putting ourselves behind the eight-ball with our inability to score early. Can that group get off to faster starts and better starts? You can really try to control a football game by holding a lead and scoring early makes life easier on your defense. I haven’t watched the rest of it. I watched the first hour and 20 minutes. Yeah. Uh because I have a new fascination. The um Pablo Tori finds out. Now, we talked about Pablo Tori in a not so nice way during the Jordan Hudson uh fiasco. I fiasco is not the right word because I don’t find it a fiasco for UNCC. I really don’t. But the Pablo is really going hard in the paint on that story and until somebody shows me why it really matters, I’m just not feeling it. But Tore is doing incredible investigative work with regards to the National Football League Players Association and the NFL. Incredible work. and he and Mike Florio from Pro Football Talk have done 4 hours of podcast about what we could say shenanigans, but that I think doesn’t lend the right weight to what appears to be corruption in the players association. like not doing anything positive for their constituents. I’m not through all of it yet, but that’s my quick read halfway through the four episode. They should be a box set at this point, but it is amazing how thorough Toré and Florio have been. and Torres has been so much respect for the the work, the patience, the the lack of fear, man. You’re going up against the National Football League. Good luck. Good luck. All right, we’ll uh we’ll get to that uh a little bit later on, but right now, Wall of Sound. The Wall of Sound is a function of this studio. There’s no doubt about it. All right, the uh the Panthers are in Houston tomorrow. 1:00 game, preseason game number two. Dave Canales, I need to know how many of your starters are going to play. Are we going to see the starters on Saturday? That’s the hope. I want to see how we come out of today cuz I know like right after the practice, thank the Lord, feels like we came out pretty clean. Um but you know, things kind of present themselves. soreness will present itself tonight. So, we’ll have to kind of, you know, kind of reconfigure in the morning, see where we’re at to see how long we want to play them. But, they will be playing all right. Good. Um, indoors shouldn’t be too bad. I mean, I’m sure uh get just walking into the stadium probably be humid, but indoors should be uh comfortable. It’s the way uh it’s the way it’s supposed to work. That’s why you have indoors. Anyway, Canales on Bryce Young’s day at the joint practice. Our process is getting to the line, uh, using his tools, using his answers, reading coverages, you know, um, and just being accurate with the ball, you know, extending plays when he had to. And, uh, the more opportunities he gives our guys to make plays, they’ve come through for him. And we got a we got, I think we had a big, uh, defensive pass interference that actually flipped the field. So, you can see how it goes both ways. But, um, he did a great job today. How many times, by the way, have I said that I’m not team Mike Jackson, the other quarterback opposite JC Horn? Yeah. Look, the amount of times I have been right or wrong are probably about the same like anybody else. So, Mike Jackson had a great interception of CJ Strad and somebody, I don’t know, saw the video of it online and send it to me. Thank you. It’s all I can say. Thank you. Hey, I I don’t want to be right about that because if I’m wrong about that, that means Mike Jackson is good and the Panthers have two good quarterbacks. You got two good corners, you got a good defense. Uh Bryce Young, talk about uh what the quarterback needs is a wide receiver room that is all dialed in. And here’s Bryce Young on his targets. Yeah, ju just stepping up to competition, you know. Um, you know, coach coach talks about not not not trying to raise our level, but to to make sure we stick uh sync to the level of our training and technique. And you see them just being who they are, consistent. Um, and it it seems, you know, it seems like they’re stepping up. In reality, they’re doing exactly what the coaches are saying, being consistent on our day-to-day. Um, you see that it brings out the best in all of us, gives us that ability to to to see tighter, have more focus. Um, so yeah, like you said, it’s an extremely competitive group. Um it’s it’s you know it’s unfortunate how NFL is that we can’t keep all of them because uh they all they all deserve it based on how hard they work how much they produce. So um obviously that that’ll be a front office thing but we have confidence in all the guys across the board. All right. Couple of things there. One I had not heard sink to the level of your training. I had not heard that. It’s new to me. I’m not sure that’s a positive. That might be a a misstatement there. But Bryce Young did say, “We can’t keep all of them.” Now, before anybody starts going and looking at the depth chart and say, “Oh, David Moore’s got to go.” Maybe they’re talking about some of the players beyond the first seven. I don’t know. But if you only keep six receivers, which that’s generally the number that most teams keep, maybe five, but if you only keep six, the Panthers have seven receivers that they obviously like. Now, does somebody start the season on injured reserve with a designation to return? What would it be like week I think it’s like week six or something? Maybe. Um, but more than likely somebody’s going to go. David Moore is probably the leading candidate, but you’ve got McMillan and Legette and Coker and Thelen and Renfro and um, Jimmy Horn. That’s That’s a really strong six-pack of receiving targets. It’s amazing where the Panthers are today versus where they were two years ago. Year one of Bryce Young was awful. Awful. And now they look stocked at wide receiver. It is an incredible thing. Uh, all right. Final uh, well, this is final thing about Bryce. Anyway, remember going into the draft, we knew that Bryce Young and CJ Strad were friends, like really, really good friends growing up. I thought I saw, and this, if it’s in this clip, you know, I apologize for kind of scooping it. CJ Strad said the other day, and I think he’d said it before, that Bryce Young is the best quarterback he’s ever seen. Here’s CJ on his buddy. I would say very similar, you know, he’s very even kill, very to himself. Um, and I think for him, I think I’ve seen a dog come out of him that he has that a lot of people haven’t seen, you know. Um, but, you know, I know he dealt with some frustrations. Um, and I think, you know, the guy we serve, you know, I think it’s good that we go through these ups and downs to like refocus you back on what’s important. I think he had that and I had it last year as well. Um, and I think he bounced back like, you know, he should and and we all know he can. He’s a he’s a heck of a player, one of the best quarterbacks I’ ever seen in my life. And I just think, you know, he needs some help around him, too, you know. So, um, but I I’m just really proud of that guy. Um, and just the same way he said about me through every ups and down, every uh valley and peak, like he stayed the same guy, stayed loyal and stayed a friend and a brother. So, I’m very appreciative of him. It’s cool, man. These guys grew up together. Yeah. Yeah, you could see at the draft when they both got picked, they were both happy for each other. Tremendous. Uh, all right, let’s take a break. We’ll come back. Josh Graham and Randy Slack in the round table next. And I don’t want either of them to let on whether they do or don’t until the very end of this. We welcome in from Sports Hub Triad, Josh Graham, uh, our returning champion and Randy Slack from ESPN Wilmington. I feel like this has been a an early anniversary gift to me. I love talking with both of you guys. So, thank you very much for doing this because I know I can talk a little bit about baseball with uh with all of you. Uh so, I do before we get to baseball, Josh, I know you live tweet some of the worst television on this planet. Tell me though that you did at least check out some of Taylor Swift on the New Heights podcast. Um, I did it as a service to our audience here in the Piedmont Triad. So that way if you are if you don’t care about it and you’re a sports fan and you have somebody of interest whether it’s a significant other or somebody you want to talk to that you know is a Taylor Swift fan you at least have the cliff’s notes because once upon a time when I was a single man Adam I did in fact watch some TV shows just to have something to talk about women and the show I’m talking about of course is Lagouna Beach circa like 2008 2009 I did. But also, but at this point in my life, that was before I started liking the show. You probably watch Love Island. I would walk to like a group of women just knowing that one of them might watch Lagouna Beach and I’d be like, “Can you guys believe Jess and Bobby? Like, what a snake.” And they’d be like, “Yes, yes.” And that’s how it would work. So, that was the service I did. I sat through the 100 minutes or so of Taylor Swift’s first podcast and learned that she thought that Josh Allen and Jared Goff would be out on the field at the same time. She doesn’t think that anymore, but she did. At the time, there was a time where uh where she did. Uh Randy, did you watch? No, I do what people do in 2025. I just wait for the uh click uh the clip farm people to just put the best clips online and then I just watch that kind of stuff. Let’s be honest though, we need Taylor to come out with a better album because Tortured Poets was boring and drab and had no hooks and wasn’t exciting at all. We need something that has a little meat on the bones. Like you’re a billionaire lady. You can’t be writing gloomy songs every day. Like you’re you’re awesome, okay? Like take it easy a little bit. Write something happy. Write something gets a toe tapping. That’s all. That’s something Write something write something about Xavier Worthy. Clearly she’s a huge fan of his work. big night for Xavier Worthy and for Darren Golf in that matter. Uh and maybe Josh Allen in a roundabout way as well. Uh here’s the thing. Um I think Randy just is going to get in trouble now with uh with with the Swifties. Um I mean I I’ve I have at at times criticized Beyonce for the inability to dance and that’s I mean she can’t she’s a terrible dancer. Uh and she is she looks like she’s having a seizure. I mean, what’s next? You gonna go after the Navy? You’re gonna go after Rihanna? Is that what’s next? No, they I’m not I would never do that. Easy. Yeah. Thank you very much, Josh. You recognize uh my plight. All right, let’s go. Let’s talk a little football. Um your uh Randy, your confidence level in Bryce Young going into year three. Before you answer, I get this sense that we are going to see a step up from what we saw at the end of last season. I am very bullish on year three of Bryce Young. What say you? On a scale of 1 to 10, I’m going to go with like a seven and a half. I’m really wondering, my biggest question with Bryce Young this year, can he win comeback player of the year? Like I wonder, is it too late for him to win that? It feels like that might be an award legitimately he might win. Comeback won it last year. Should have won it last year. Well, I think we’re all by the definition of the award. He should have won it last year. We’re kind of overrating the award. Uh overrating what he did last year. Um but I Well, the award is more just most improved player, which they don’t have. They just say comeback player, but then sometimes people win it and you’re like that guy never was there to begin with. How could he have come back? So, I’m saying quite literally he was gone. He was benched and then he came back. Yeah, but unfortunately I mean unfortunately uh but he was only benched for like three weeks until Andy Dalton in a car accident. It’s true. It was longer than that. No, I don’t think how how many He only missed a couple game like three games. It was a month. It was a month of Andy Dalton. Yeah. Yeah. Those are dark times. It feels like it feels like forever with Andy Dalton. As a former Bengal fan, I can tell you uh that What do you mean former Bengals fan? Well, I mean I mean as a former Bengal, I can uh as a fan of the Bengals. He was there. I I misspoke. I’m sorry. Are you doing the thing that Adam does with the Mets? Is that what you’re doing? No, I’m I What makes you think I did that with the Mets? I did it with the Jets. I’ve admitted that. Uh but that’s, you know, 40 50 years of uh of of dysfunction will do that to you. Josh, your thoughts on uh Bryce? Uh the offense seems very real. Uh watching that on Friday and watching see the national folks that often dominate the conversation. Once you’re out of the playoff race, they stop paying attention. So, I don’t think anybody realized that Bryce Young was the best quarterback in the NFL the final three games of the season where he had 10 total touchdowns and no turnovers and a quarterback rating of like 119 something crazy. See, this is what I was afraid of. No, I I’m just saying that people don’t realize he was that good for a very condensed sample and then over a 10ame span when you rope in the performances where he nearly beat Philadelphia and Kansas City that played in the Super Bowl that he was that type of good. And I think it’s the timing of this conversation is really interesting, Adam, because they’re playing the Houston Texans tomorrow. Bryce Young was the number one pick two years ago. CJ Stra is number two. You’d get laughed off a show like this if you merely suggested there was a chance Bryce was better than CJ Strad at this time a year ago. But there was no question CJ was equipped with better coaching and better weapons and better everything of the year and he was terrific. This year the Houston Texans have the worst offensive line by projections across the league. Uh Tank Dell had a gruesome injury at the end of last year. Not going to play this year. They lost to Fon Diggs and they have injuries at running back. And by the way, inexplicably, they got rid of their OC and Bobby Slowick. So, he’s learning a new offense this off seasonason. Bryce Young, meanwhile, adds a top 10 pick at receiver. Adds another 10,00 rusher, Enrico Da to go along with Chuba Hubard, and on top of that, doesn’t have to learn a new offense. There is some continuity there, and has a good offensive line. I I think this year is going to be fascinating in just the lens between those two that Bryce Young, there are no excuses anymore. If if Cara, we will learn this year if Carolina made a mistake or not on whether or not they should have drafted CJ Strad because if Straoud’s better than Bryce this year when Strad does not have all the things he’s been equipped with, or at least not as good as what Bryce seemingly has now, I think it becomes obvious who the better quarterback out of the two is. I have faith that Price is gonna have a better season than CJ Stra. I think we’ve all talked about this. Randy Slack from ESPN Wilmington is joining us as well as Josh Graham, Sports Hub Triad. Uh we we’ve all talked about this before. Maybe it was together in one of these uh three-ways uh here. Excuse you. Um that we forget. Exactly. I should have I should have just done that. uh we forget or I don’t but many people do that when you have no weapons and no offensive line and the coaching staff is all over the place it is impossible for a rookie quarterback to look competent. So everybody seemed to be out on Bryce after year one and of course everybody’s got buyer remorse. We envy the other thing and CJ Stroud had a great rookie season and they won a bunch of games and they went to the playoffs, all of that. But ultimately, he was set up to succeed. Young was set up to failure. And did it completely flip last year? By the end of the season, it’s easy to say that, but it certainly got better for Bryce and it definitely leveled off and dropped back a little bit for CJ. I think Josh, I think you’re right, but I don’t think we have to Bryce doesn’t have to be better than C CJ Strad this year. Yeah, I understand what you’re saying about in terms of personnel around him, but as long as Bryce has determined that he is legitimately the Panthers quarterback to go into the next five or so years, then it then the pick was the right pick. It is a good distinction. You’re right. like it does. He doesn’t have to be better than CJ Strad for it to still be for the Panthers, right? He just has to be good. But in order to decide whether or not they made a mistake between the two quarterbacks, if Strad has less and performs better than Bryce, well, then you should have drafted CJ Strad. We can say that if he’s better this year with the worst offensive line and a new OC and having his best receiver arguably hurt or one of the two best and losing Stfan Dicks, like we we can say that. Randy Slack is joining us here. He’s a a former Bengals fan who I know is a big Browns supporter. I misspoke. I’m sorry. Good grief. So, I’m This is my way. They pushed me. They pushed me to the edge. I thought if they were going to go to Chicago, I was kind of like, you know what? I could just get rid of this team and never have to deal with this nonsense ever again. Then, you know, on one hand, I was like, maybe this is for the best. But go ahead, continue. Sorry. Well, what I was going to I was going to sort of transition in a roundabout way to Bill Bich. Uh, so I I I don’t know if if anybody has seen the the the UNC football doc uh just soon. Yeah, just as soon watch the Taylor Swift episode on New Heights again, which I liked. I’ve enjoyed it. Uh, but the UNCC doc isn’t doing much for me. I think maybe Netflix won uh in this regard. Um, but what do what do you think? What what are your what is what are you anticipating Randy in year one? Well, first of all, I think Bill Bich’s got to come out with more poppy songs with better hooks coming into this new season. Sorry. No. Um the same joke. Yeah, you’re Thank you. Uh Bill Bich is allegedly I say allegedly because I’m going to just say something here, but you know, he’s the greatest coach of all time in pro football. He should be better at coaching football games than every other coach he goes against. all season long. Maybe maybe Clemson it’s it’s a little close because it’s because it is, you know, Davo’s a good coach there in Clemson, but Bill Bich should be better than everybody else. The talent I don’t know if the talent’s going to be there, but if you’re spending 65% of your uh NIL money or whatever it is that Bubba says, you better win it. You better be sniffing at the playoffs because if you’re not close, if you’re not Yeah. Look, if if if they’re if they’re not near the playoffs and the uh the Carolina basketball team is a bubble team, there’s going to be some real problems in Chapel Hill real soon. Well, I think in year one, I don’t think they’ll be sniffing a playoff, but I do think that Carolina will will at least have a good record in year one. Josh, what are your what what are you anticipating from this group? Um, I first off before getting into actually what we think’s going to happen on the field because it’s a complete mystery and Bill wants it that way. I do think there’s a story that’s being missed nationally about the lack of anticipation. And what I mean by that is I think when Bill was hired almost to the day eight months ago, we thought they were going to be the trendy team in college football. they were going to be the toast of college football and that they they were going to become overhyped and that has not happened when you consider we look at how dumb some of these preseason polls can be. We do and I’m not validating them in the sense that we should take where where they are placed in these polls as any level of credits for where they’re going to finish during the year, but it is a good indicator in how much hype is surrounding your team. Virginia Tech was picked 11th in the ACC preseason poll. Somebody picked them to win the ACC championship. Not one out of the 180 ACC preseason voters picked North Carolina to win the league. And we know how many people in that building own a degree from the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill to broaden it. You mentioned correctly uh um Slack that uh Bill Bich is so respected in the coaching community. Look at the preseason coaches poll that came out. They didn’t receive a vote to make the top. Nobody say I’m not saying they should have. Is there anything more fickle than an AP media voter? Like always in the off season during the preseason when we have nothing to pull off of, you can be driven. You can be allured by hype in a big story. Louisiana Lafayette received the vote for the top 25. Nobody picked North Carolina. And I think that says something about the lack of hype that isn’t there with the Tar Hills. It’s kind of amazing. We’re talking about Bill Bich here, Adam, because there’s no talent there that they know about. Colorado didn’t have really I mean, okay, you had Shador and Travis. Nobody thought Colorado would be good going into year one. They got votes. They got votes like people were the hype people would talk themselves into. Well, you know why they got votes? Because they had Shador Sanders and Travis Hunter. That’s why they got votes every year. This North Carolina team, this North Carolina team, Josh, does not possess a single player that people know his name. Not one. A good quarterback or a great quarterback. and a great future Heisman Trophy winner. That goes a long way. Um, and plus they had seen those guys play and succeed. Do you remember for a 10-year stretch where Steve Spurer every year would give Duke a vote for the preseason top 25 in the coaches poll? There’ just be that one vote. Nick Sabin doesn’t have a vote anymore. It’s Bill Bich and nobody gave him anything. I appreciate you finding that one reason. Uh but I just think that nobody knows if they’re going to be any good. I think they win. I think it’s because of his girlfriend. I think she’s a smokeree and everybody looks at her and they go, “This program’s a mess.” And that’s I think he’s okay with everybody focusing on her that she’s caused. In reality, it’s not a big deal to him. I think they win nine maybe 10 games without being without without necessarily being really good. It’s a pretty comfortable schedule. They’ve got I think they’ve got five lossable games on their schedule. That’s it. NC State, they’re going to lose. They’re going to lose. That’s one of the five. NC State, Duke’s a lossable game. Uh what? At Syracuse, TCU, and Central Florida. Those are the five loable games. I don’t know if you’ve seen the movie Draft Day, but put it on a sticky note right now. Like Vonte Mack no matter what. Write down NC State beats North Carolina no matter what over Dave Goran’s dead body. Is he losing that game? I Bill Bichc in his first press conference told us that sweet story of how his first words were, “Beat Duke.” Yeah. Oh gosh, that was Let’s Let’s hope that he knows that his fans don’t care about that game. They care about the one in Raleigh. Let’s all agree. Let’s all agree as we as we close shop here, uh, that that was the low point of the Bill Bellichic era at UNC because nobody believes that that was true, let alone that that’s how Carolina fans think about football. Zero people think that that was true. Also, when he was interviewing with the Carolina job, reportedly he told Carolina officials it was Duke sucks rather than beat Duke. So, that’s the other part that is just uh All right. Uh final thing. So, we didn’t even talk baseball. Uh I have to let you both go here, but I just need a prediction. Josh. Yeah. Who’s winning the Premier League? Charlotte FC. Five in a row. They’ve won five in a row in MLS play. Going for six tomorrow. Let’s go crown. Uh, Randy, that was that was an incorrect answer, but Randy, who’s winning? Shout out to the Marshall Islands for finally having a football team. The last country on the planet that doesn’t h that had a national team. They played their first national game last night. Lost 4-nil, but that’s pretty cool that they finally got a game. Having said that, it’s going to be Liverpool. They’re awesome. Like, it’s not I thought I thought I thought you were just going to answer it that way. And actually, it’s very fitting for a conversation with Randy Slack and Josh Graham. Gentlemen, it’s always a pleasure. I thank you much. Let’s go Mets. Let’s go Reds. Yeah, Reds win tonight. Uh Mets lose tonight. That’s that was part of the parlay, by the way. Uh when we come back, I have some thoughts and live from the United Kingdom, my friend Ian Macintosh will help us preview the Premier League next. Making more sports sense than social media trolls. You know hockey.” And I was like, “Oh, heartstrings. It’s fantastic.” Yeah. No, it’s uh it was it was awesome. The Adam Gold Show. It’s the Adam Gold show. I’m Adam Gold. Victoria’s on the ones and twos. I got Little League Baseball on a TV in front of me. Uh, Venezuela just had a no hitter broken up by Canada in the top of the fifth inning. Finally got their first hit. Little League baseball, which gave us the single to right, but thrown out at first. Everybody has seen that in Little League, right? Line drive, single to right field, thrown out at first routinely. You never see that in the big leagues ever. It’s almost like a courtesy, even if the guy’s not running hard. and we’re not going to try and throw him out. But it happens routinely in Little League Baseball. It actually led to an error, but uh with all of that said, that’s uh uh that’s Little League Baseball. We are into the Little League World Series. Speaking of that, uh Mets lost again last night. Jeez, it’s got it’s got to stop. I need to feel better. Victoria, today is the day. That’s right. My Reds, Liverpool open up defense of the Premier League today at home or tonight at home depending on where you are. It’ll be tonight if you’re at Anfield against Bournemouth who I assume has players left. I’m not sure. It’s been a mass exodus uh from from the Cherries. And joining us, as you can see right there on the screen, Ian Mintosh, who is the presenter of the Routt One Football Podcast. And here it says, uh, football fast, no FAF. What is FAF? I have no idea what FAF is. And you, it’s all in less than 15 minutes. We’re going to try to do that here. What is FAF? Well, that’s exactly it. FAF is a old English phrase for messing around, wasting time. So you might consider faf in football to be needlessly passing the ball from the goalkeeper to the defenders, across the defense, back to the goalkeeper, and out again. That would be faffing around. Route one, of course, is how we call going long, hitting that up to the big man. And that’s the whole point of the show. There are a lot of football podcasts that are an hour, an hour and a half of lots of people talking about inverted fullbacks and deep lying goalkeepers. Um, this isn’t that. It’s a scripted show. It’s 15 minutes to give you all of the best stories across the world of football um without wasting time. You and I talked last year um doing this show for the athletic and now this is an independent. So, we want people to go subscribe to it. And I do think you’ve changed in some ways in that it’s about stories, not so much about matches and outcomes and all of that. Uh, and I’m a stories guy, so I want to dive in. And by the way, before we start, I know I I know you’re a Jets fan. I’m a recovering Jets fan. I used to be a long time ago. Uh, I did a 12step program and I am cured. Uh, I actually think that they’re going to be interesting in a good way this year. I don’t know if they’re a playoff team, uh, but I think Jets fans, wherever they live, I think will enjoy the season. I have I I have a good feeling, uh, about them. So, I want to start with this because as a Liverpool fan, all I heard last year was how weak the Premier League was. They were diminishing my first title as a fan. I’ve only been a fan for uh for about four years. Um, how strong is it? Is it too topheavy? Uh we’ve seen what the uh the promoted teams all three promoted teams go right back down uh the uh the following year that has happened two years in a row or something like that. Um what what is your read on the overall strength of the league? Well, first of all, let’s address that Liverpool thing. It’s complete nonsense to say that Liverpool somehow kind of lucked into a title. They were brilliant, relentlessly brilliant last season. So, we’ll we’ll hear no more about that. This season is going to be so much harder because you obviously have Liverpool with massive reinforcements and we’ll probably talk about that in a bit, but that will bring its own problems. You have Manchester City in a period of transition with new players, but they are brilliant and Pep Guardiola’s, I would think, the best manager of his generation. And Arsenal, everyone’s mean to Arsenal. They’re their bad days are not that bad. They don’t give up very much xG at all. They’re really only a couple of little bits away from being an excellent team. And Chelsea, I think a lot of people are underestimating as well because while I still think it’s weird that they’ve spent a billion pounds and they don’t really have a first class goalkeeper, they do have about 37 attacking midfielders, they’re pretty much immune to any kind of injury crisis now. That’s a big top four. And that’s if it stays like that because there’s so much strength and depth behind it in this division. I think we’re gearing up for one alltime classic of a campaign. Yeah, I actually think that from five to maybe 12, you might see a team 12th that you thought would be fifth and vice versa. I think there is so much I’ll call it parody. That’s the NFL word. Uh they love parody. I’m not sure if you know fans like parody, but I think there could be a lot of shuffling uh in in that. Uh, and we’ll get to Man City uh, in a second. Here’s the thing about Liverpool real quick. And I believe I I I picked Arsenal to win it this year because I think they are the best team and I think they will have the most continuity from last year to this year. And that to me is a large reason why Liverpool won. They brought in nobody last year. They basically ran out the same club they ran out the year before, which you could argue should have won it two years ago. I I would also argue argue that Arsenal should have won it two years in a year two years ago and I think that benefited Liverpool and I don’t think it will benefit them this year cuz there is so much turnover. I like Arsenal to win. Uh even though almost everybody I see picks Liverpool, including some Arsenal fans, but I think that is some ways uh like um what a what a you know reverse engineering it or something like that. Uh but about Manchester City, Ian Macintosh, uh Route One podcast, you should get it. 15 minutes, all the news stories. Is it possible that we’re underestimating how historically great some of the players were in their at their best? Kevin De Bruyne, uh the uh the best of uh Il Gundowan, uh Kyle Walker, um Riad Mahrez, who’s now been gone a couple of years. Phil Fodin was bad last year. I don’t know what to make of that. Uh I look at them and I say I think it was maybe more about how historically great those players were. Not that Pep’s not awesome because he is. I don’t like Man City this year. I think they finished fourth. I I’m absolutely torn. Um, I think one thing to recall is when Pep Guardiola came into Manchester City, they’d had about 10 years of basically playing the game with infinite money cheap mode switched on, but they still had Gail Kichi and Bachi Sagner as their fullbacks and and they’re so crucial to the way that City plays. Guardiola, I think, finished third in his first season. Um, and he had to rebuild the team and he did it and they got better and better and better and all things must age. All empires must fall. They just sort of ran out of steam halfway through last season. I actually thought he did very well to to lift them back up to where they finished. He has got a good eye for a player. He is a phenomenal tactician. I don’t know enough about some of the players that he’s brought in. I don’t watch the European leagues as much as I watch the English league, but I do trust in Guardiola. And I do think that they are the they’re the sort of proposition they could win the title and blow everyone away or they could finish fourth as they struggle to settle. I I would not be putting any money anywhere near that club. Uh but they’re they’re fairly decent value right now, aren’t they? They they’re the third choice, right? Well, it’s the first time in 10 years they haven’t been runaway favorites, I think. But I tell you, I’m with you. When you look at Arsenal last season, Bakri Sacka out for three to four months. Erdigard, one of the best players in the Premier League. His form dipped away. Martinelli was less than he usually is. And they had no strikers and they still came second. They’ve added a very good midfielder in Zuba Mande. They they’ve added a a prolific striker from Portugal. And you’ll see how I’ve chosen those words because I don’t know how much good a prolific striker from Portugal is. But, you know, we’ll we’ll wait and see. I’m with you. I think it I think it’s going to be really tight and I think it could be anyone of at least four, but if I was going to put money anywhere, it be on the on the gunners. Uh, all right. You you mentioned Chelsea, the World Champions Club World Cup, uh which happened before Route One Pod started. Uh what was your ultimate takeaway from that event? I liked some of the matches. You know, to me, I I I kept calling it a farce of a competition. Uh because it was just a money grab, but everything’s a money grab, I guess. Uh what was your takeaway in the Club World Cup? Well, there’s a lot of things I like about it. One of the the sadnesses of football over the last 40 or 50 years is we never really had a clear indication as to who the best was, the great South American teams or the great European teams. They tended to meet once a year in Japan in the middle of the season to play off once. It wasn’t really a good gauge. So, it was fun to see these legacy names of South American football uh up against the ones that certainly over here we’re more familiar with. I worry about the strain on the players though because they’re just not getting any rest whatsoever. Um, and it was hot out there. It was really really hot. So, yeah, there there’s some nice novelty value there, and I’ll never say no to watching a bit of football, but I I worry a little bit about the the longer term issues there. I’m with you in the uh the wearing the players out. I mean, they play if you play in European competitions and you go uh especially in uh in England, you go through your uh both of the cup competitions, you’re talking about 60 matches just there. Uh and then Chelsea ended up winning it. I think there was another nine matches. That is just way too much football. Ian Macintosh Route One Pod. Uh no FAF. I still I’m unsure about FAF, but that’s fine. United or Spurs, who’s better this year? Well, I tell you, if you’d asked me on Tuesday, I’d have said Manchester United. I was getting quite worried about Spurs, but as much as everyone took the mickey out of them, that was a good performance against Paris Sanchean. So, maybe we’ve written them off a bit too quickly. With Manchester United, there’s I think two things can be true. One, I genuinely think they’re the stupidest football club in England, if not Europe. the way that they operate is just relentlessly incompetent. Um, and they are cruel to their employees and they’re cruel to their fans. The players morale apparently is rock bottom, but they are good footballers. There are good footballers there. Lots of people were chasing Shesho. The players they’ve got already are good. There’s something rotten at the heart of the club. And if Ruben Amarim can be the person to dig it out, I don’t know. But I know he seems to have the courage of his convictions. He’s not afraid to make a hard decision. He’s not afraid to offload players who have been heavily invested in. And I’m not for a moment comparing him to Sir Alex Ferguson because that was a very, very long time ago. And Ferguson is a legend. But there were similar things that Ferguson had to do. In 1986, he inherited a drinkers club. They were they were doing training and then 10 pints down the pub afterwards. There were a lot of great players that Ferguson had to say goodbye to. So, I I think they might surprise a few people. I might I I can’t see them being anywhere close to a title race. I’ll be surprised if they got a Champions League place, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see him land a few punches as the season goes on. Yeah, and I think it’ll be very interesting. Unfortunately for them, uh Old Trafford has not been kind to the home side over the last couple of years, and they open up with Arsenal uh coming up Sunday. I guess it’s late afternoon UK time. Ian Macintosh is joining us here on the Adam Gold Show. Final thing, um, here in the United States, like I’ve I really started to fall in love with the sport through watching Welcome to Rexom. So, they have now had two con three consecutive promotions, which is un had never been done. Can I mean, I don’t think they can get a fourth, but what’s your view of the Red Dragons? I’m I’m completely with you to be honest. I didn’t think they’d get a third. I’ve seen a lot of football at that level and there’s there are teams in the third division who are very well funded and very well uh followed and I genuinely thought Rexen would need two or three seasons to stabilize before they could even think about going Championship. So, what they’ve done already is astonishing. I did watch the game against Southampton and I think I think certain things showed. Southampton are basically a Premier League club, albeit one that played absolutely appallingly last season. Um, and Rexom aren’t there yet, but it’s it’s a funny division, the Championship. Everyone can land a punch in there. I don’t think they’ll be in any sort of relegation danger. I think they’ll probably end up swirling around in mid-table having good moments and bad moments. The key for them now, and I I I’d say it’s time for them to prove, you know, their metal. They’ve proved their metal. They’re they’re very very good at what they do. But it’s if they hit a run of five or six defeats on the bounce, which can happen so easily in the championship, do they hold their nerve? Do they put their faith in a manager who’s got them so far, or do they panic? Because there will be people within that football club now sort of saying, you know, is Phil Parkinson the man for this stage? Are we are we going to have to look for a bigger name manager? And I tell you, the money that’s floating around there, the the the TV money and the Hollywood money, could you bet against something mad like Jurgen Klopp turning up? Well, Klopp said he would never manage another uh team in the Premier League. So, well, yeah, there you go. They’re in the Premier League and they’re not in England as well. They’re they’re from Wales. But there is precedent for this. In the uh early 1990s, Blackburn Rovers, who had been brilliant in the late 19th century, uh were taken over by a local businessman called Jack Walker, who poured loads of money in. And his first managerial appointment was Kenny Dag Leash, who had won the double for Liverpool just six years previous. So, I I could see a plot twist coming. I hope it doesn’t because I think Phil Park deserves uh enormous congratulations for what he’s done and a lot of faith. But if you want an outside bet, I’d fancy that one. That would be uh that would be something else. All right, we did it under 15 minutes. Route one football fast, no faf. I actually worked in a little bit of FAF. Uh I appreciate Ian Macintosh. You can follow him on Blue Sky. I’d say follow him on Twitter, but it’s been like three years since he’s posted anything on that uh on that hellscape. Uh so, blue sky for Ian Macintosh. I appreciate your time, sir. Best of luck with the pod. I will talk to you again soon. Absolutely pleasure as always. Have a great weekend. I love uh I love Ian Macintosh. You know that you you’re not taken seriously about uh your um knowledge of soccer unless you have a British accent. I know it does make you extra sophisticated. Yeah, apparently it’s that. And you can’t be a golf commentator on if you’re from the United States. Well, you also can’t be a Spice Girl. Well, well, that’s an English fan. Exactly. That makes that that makes more sense. Like, but you know, like I guess NBC doesn’t have any Brits, right? Yeah. I don’t think so. I’m trying to think about NBC’s golf coverage now. Why anybody cares about that, I’m not sure. Uh, but like CBS, if Trev Trevor Immelman, that’s it’s all Brits. Uh, that’s fine. No, no issue with it at all. Uh, but you have to, if you have an English accent, you definitely have more credibility. Oh, for sure. People are like, why is Gold doing this? Cuz I love it. Sorry. Sorry. I People should understand this. There are times where I am self-indulgent. I have admitted that. I did that segment for me. Yeah. And like the the you know I have a bunch of buddies and we do a Premier League picks thing every week. Uh so for them too. Yeah. Of course most of them have jobs. So I should that’s that’s a terrible thing to say out loud, isn’t it? I mean you have a job. I do and we have a lot of listeners and they have jobs. But those people Never mind. They’ll uh they’ll listen to it later uh in uh in a different way. Uh hope everybody has a good weekend. Panthers in Houston tomorrow 1:00. We’ll talk about it on Monday.
