Miami Dolphins vs Detroit Lions Full Game 1st TODAY NFL 2025-Preview | NFL Today

do whatever you have to do. Give the coaches confidence that you know what, if you have to play an extended period of time, we don’t need to completely change everything we’re doing offensively. Offense that’s ask you to do a lot of things. Here we go. Lions football on a Saturday afternoon. Grant Stewart on the return. The linebacker turned kick returner and he holds to his right on a first down throw. It’s a short set. He gets it out wide and he’s got a completion to Jackson Meeks who had a big day against Atlanta. Starting lineups presented by MGM Grand Detroit. Here is the offensive line. Both tackles are back, Jones and Skipper. And that’s big and I know that Manu was playing a lot of left tackle, right tackle while Decker was out, while uh Skipper was out, while while Jamarco Jones was out. Good to get those guys back. And it’s better to shore up that offensive line so you can fairly evaluate the quarterbacks, the running backs, and get just your best options in there to make sure you’re playing good football. It’s a boot. It’s a throw. It’s complete to Kennedy. And Tom Kennedy just short of midfield on the completion from Allen. But on time, on target and two just easy completions, right? The first one, the three-step drop. This time, just a play action off the back backside. Tom Kennedy, nice job of staying friendly to the quarterback, getting your eyes back and giving Kyle Allen a big target out there in the flat. And then the work after the catch is always something that we we’d love to see. Former Boston Cannon Tom Kennedy with his first grab at the 48. It’s second down and two with Reynolds at tailback and he will get this carry into the teeth of that Dolphins defensive line. We’ll see some of their regular defensive linemen at least early. Bonito Jones. Some big bodies in there, too. And just last week, watching them against Chicago, this Miami Dolphins front, it’s it can be difficult to run in the middle when you have, you know, three or four guys that look like they can play nose tackle for you. This offensive line, good job that last time of of surging up the field, not letting up any any penetration. Well, we know Bonito Jones 61 335 the list price. Reynolds one Dodge gets to the outside. First down and more across the 30 yd line. And there is a marker down all the way back at midfield. It’s a 31 yd run if it stands. There was a dolphin in the back field immediately and that may have elicited a hold. Here is Adrien Hill holding off it. Number 85. 10yd penalty. Third down. It is on Kennedy. And take a look at tight hand does get a little bit on the Yeah, that’s that’s and you know that’s difficult because the receiver you’re trying to cut off the inside, right? And if the running back bounces it, you just you don’t have eyes in the back of your head. So I don’t think that’s a terrible rep from Tom Kennedy. Maybe if that right hand is just more on the inside chest plate, uh probably get away with it there. Instead, you’re left with having to get to midfield on a third down and 11 and the Lions too much time will get a flag. Delayed game offense 5 yd penalty remains third down. Thought they might give the timeout. It looked like Allen was trying to signal for the timeout or the reset of the shot the uh play clock. Yeah. And normally they I I don’t know how they decide when to reset it or not. And the long play, right, Craig Reynolds, long run and then it’s penalty. Everybody’s got to get back to the line of scrimmage sometime. I I really don’t know how they decide to give the reset or not. This is Vaky and he is swarmed and Vaky is dropped. First man in was Willie Gay, the six-year man out of Mississippi State. And it was a promising drive but for the hold against Kennedy. Yeah. And that time just trying to run just a quick screen out to Vaky. Get some offensive line out in front. Miami great awareness. You’re anytime you’re thinking third and long. That’s always potential for screen. That’s potential for a draw. Normally the offense is just trying to get a chunk backs to to put themselves in better position to bring the weapon Jack Fox on to change the field possession. You’re okay with me mentioning that D. Ess went to Western Michigan, right? That’s fine. All right. #action. Ask back to return. He’s in the 26 and he lost the ball. It pops up in the air. It’s still live and it looks like the Dolphins are on top of it. Sion Baky was the one to punch it free. How about that? Sion Baky is such a weapon for this team and he is going to be fun to watch not only in this game but this year. He is. as he brings value. Comes in here, helmet right on the football. That is teach tape right there from Seattle. Miami offense. Zack Wilson looking to his left. He’ll sling it out that way. And he’s got it to Eric Ezukama, the former Texas Tech Red Raider. Starting lineups presented by MGM Grand Detroit. What are you watching on this defense today, TJ? Well, we already talked about Keith Cooper who’s out there right now to see if he can be disruptive on that interior defensive line. Good to have Pat O’ Conor back who played a lot of football last week and I think Alco Muhammad has also taken a step this this uh training camp. He played a lot of meaningful snaps late in the season last year. Uh he is a guy that can really bring some edge to him when he’s pass rushing. We’re also seeing Nick Whiteside down in the bottom of the formation as a marker comes in. We’ll see how loud Adrien Hill is this time. False start off number 85 yd title with a second. It’s against Pharaoh Brown. You mentioned Keith Cooper in the open. As you you watch him today, what are you scanning for? I want to see a football player. I think sometimes with young players, you can think too much and oh, I’ve got to do this. I’ve got to be perfect with my hands or my foot. Just be a football player and try to find a way to make plays. And I want to see how often he lines up. Right now he’s over the right tackle. How often he lines up on the outside or the interior of that defensive line. Yeah, that versatility is so important to Dan Campbell. Here’s a shovel pass. It goes to Tanner Connor and he is submerged by Grant Stewart who had some tippiness with the Dolphins during the week because he is one of the most competitive Lions going. Yeah, he is. And we’ve seen it uh not only throughout practices but games too, right? a couple times against Atlanta last week, highlighting his athleticism and his physicality. That’s we know is a non-negotiable. If you’re going to play, especially at the linebacker position for Kelvin Shepard’s defense, you have to be fast. You have to be physical. He has been very impressive so far throughout training camp. Sometimes it’s like he’s playing two times speed from everybody else. Grant Stewart right the tail back blitz straight up the middle. Wilson gets hit. It’s nearly intercepted. Zack Wilson got clobbered and had to hustle it up. It is fourth down coming. Both linebackers coming on a blitz. It’s going to be Zack Cunningham and then Grant Stewart, the running back, lets Cunningham go first. That’s not what you want to do. You always want to take the most dangerous and that’s always going to be the first guy uh that shows color in the back field. But I love the call from Kelvin Shepard. Third and long. Try to put some pressure on them. Hey, trust your def defensive backs are going to be just fine in one-on-one coverage. And really nice rep there from Zack Cunningham who’s got a ton of experience in this league. Yeah, he’s a ninthyear man out of Vanderbilt and he has pressed to make himself a piece of this thing. But you saw you see the smile on Kelvin Shepard’s face. Everybody over on the sideline. This has been a clever defense in play calling already for the Lions. [Music] expecting that play. That play is not designed to get all the way back out to the outside edge. So, hard to blame Zack Corton for that. But you also have to read the defender’s eyes. As soon as they try to shed or redirect to a different spot, you’ve got to release or at least try to run your feet to stay in front of that defender. So, you’re watching the eyes for that 100%. And and look, if it’s an ISO, right, I’m not expecting the play necessarily to bounce all the way back to the backside, but you just have to read the body language of the defender with Vaky in. This is down the middle. Incomplete for Tesla. Kyle Allen’s throw to the former high school quarterback Tesla. Haven’t seen that much out of out of Tesla throughout training camp. Just a nice over. His guy falls down maybe just a tad too high. Hey, I know Kyle Allen’s probably telling himself, “Hey, that’s on me. I got to get it down uh right in front of the numbers, right? But I know Tesla, just listening the way that he talks in his competitiveness, he’ll be the first one to say, “Ah, man, I got to make that play.” In that game we were talking about here at Ford Field when he won the state title. Not only was he the quarterback, but he picked off two passes. So, we we know the hands are good in this building as Vaky runs straight into the defense and sets up a third down and long. the tackle for KJ Brit, the former Auburn Tiger. Vaky, what do you see him as in this offense when you already have Sonic and Knuckles? Well, I think that him and Craig Reynolds are very similar players. They’re physical. They can be guys that can uh spell either one of those two guys. They can get in there. Speaking of physical, look at Tesla. Tesla. Yeah, you got to be ready for that. Nice job keeping his feet. But just going back to Vaky, he’s versatile. He’s not just a onetrick pony. He’s and I think he’s got really great vision too for a young running back. Looked like that was Melanu the former Lion for the Dolphins there. Allen on the run. He was in front of the line of scrimmage. We’ll see if the marker comes in. It’s a catch for Tesla. [Music] It’s a first down for now, but there is the marker in back of the 26. Full body was in front of the line it looked like. Yeah. And as long as really just the back foot has to be on the line of scrimmage. But you’re right, initial thought looked like Kyle was maybe a yard too far past the line of scrimmage when he delivered that football. Illegal four pass off the number eight. The passer was beyond the line of scrimmage. That’s a 5yd penalty with loss of down. Fourth down and [Music] playing down. I was going to say I thought I heard a whistle in there somewhere. It didn’t look normal. Please reset the game clock to 8:15. The clock will start on the snap. And Jason, going back to your point about the these aren’t common opponents, right? You don’t see Miami but every four years. But, you know, when you talk about the joint practice and I was there Wednesday and everything that was written about that really sounded like the Lions dominated, right? So, look, the other guys are professionals, too. They take it personally when everybody’s talking about, hey, what happened, man? Wednesday, you know, you guys got beat up a little bit. So, last time you get to play these guys, obviously in in a game, which matters the most, but there’s a lot of pride out there. Maybe you had a bad rep on Wednesday or Thursday that you want to go get that bad taste out of your mouth. There are guys in white and teal there that are trying to make a team as well. Escridge after a booming missile from Fox back to the 18 on a 62 yd punt. Now the return team and Escridge across the 30. There’s a marker down all the way back at the 24. You force guys to block for that long running laterally quite often you’ll see a marker comes in. And the the hang time with that distance was normally you see it that far. It doesn’t stay up in the Raptors that long. Man, he is a weapon. Jack Fox during the return. Illegal block in the bat against the return team. Number 33. That penalty forced 10 yards from the spot of a foul. First down. Time out. That was a That was an absolute rocket from Fox. Dolphins have it next. in ‘ 06 when his mom was a financial an analyst for the Super Bowl committee. So, he was down here running on the field and then in ’08 he came and watched his first game cuz guess who? His uncle Steuart Schwagger was a safety suiting up for the Lions. I talked with Ian’s mom a couple of weeks ago here at training camp. She had tears in her eyes. She told me, “I don’t want to sound cliche, but we have to keep asking ourselves, is this real?” Yes, Canelli family. It is very real and Ian has had one heck of a training camp so far. It’s so cool. And just as you were talking, Danny, you see that position he’s fading back into. He’s alone on the back end there. Like he’s got a whole bit of space at Ford Field to himself as he comes up to the line here. You just wonder what’s in his mind as this is happening. What a cool moment for Ian Canelli, former Grand Valley State player. Cooper the tackle on first down. Wilson this time has a throw. He’s got Tanner Connor once again and he bowls forward into Canelli after a gain of 13. Now he’s involved. Makes even in practice the coaches have to remind them like, hey, we got to take care of our own guys. We we want you competing, don’t get me wrong, but it’s hard to balance that. You want the competitive nature, but you also, you know, don’t want to do anything silly. Here’s a blitz from the corner and it forces a short hop. Avante Maddox was the one coming to Zach Wilson to speed up the timer. I love the pressure that we’re seeing so far. Kelvin Shepard’s not afraid. Devonte Maddox right down there in the slot. You can tell reading the quarterback’s eyes as soon as that ball triggers get in the back field. He knows he’s not going to get a sack there, which I love from Levonte Maddox. That’s just experience right from that uh slot position. If you’re not going to get a hit or a sack, get in the throwing lane and force a bad pass, which we just saw. Great job. He’s a Super Bowl winner with Philadelphia a couple of years ago. Maddox. Second down. Here comes the crowd and it is a handoff to the outside for Taj Washington on the end of round. He’s going to be about a yard short to set up third down and one. Love that from the crowd. By the way, that was not preseason crowd. Good. Really good crowd. You can tell the these people missed football here in Detroit in just the last couple seasons of watching Ford Field turn into the weapon that it has been. The players and coaches, man, they rave about it. And we’ve seen already a couple times today some commun miscommunications with Miami’s offense. A false start in there. That’s that’s the 12. That’s that is the crowd that is being able to be uh disrupted opposing offense. Here we go. Third and one. Wright gets the carry and right is very close. Has he’s a guy that can add a ton of value to that already pretty stacked linebacker group. Uh but he’s man he he is a fun football player to watch. just you can tell guys that are instinctive and Zack Cunningham obviously with the experience that he has has has really great instincts and can can be really be a nice find for for Kelvin Shepard in this defense. Well, Hawkeye is not cooperating for the moment, but we’re looking for Jack Campbell, Sam Leapora, or Steven Stillianos. Maybe they can help. One of the Hawkeyes on the Lions roster. Maybe they can run out and just kind of eyeball it and see if they There he is. Maybe we can get a little help, you know, from one of the 43s for the Lions. Well, the double numbers will strike every once in a while, too. Here it is. There. The technology we have, just a little 3D football. And there’s the line. I guess keep it simple, right? Nothing wrong with that. They’re they’re doing this, by the way, in the preseason for rehearsal purposes. So, we joke around, but like once the season is up and running, it’s going to be faster. We’ve seen it in Major League Baseball what these Hawkeye cameras can do with the value of it. It’s going to be faster. And as long as it is faster, it can speed the game up to where you’re not going under the tent to take a look every time somebody’s close to that marker. Wilson on a lob. He’s got the tight end again. Connor trying to step through and he is hog tied after a gain just about eight. Tyson Russell hooked on to him and wouldn’t let go. Yeah, little bootleg there from Zack Wilson. Finds his tight end in the flat. And I’ll tell you what, that was a nice tackle from Tyson Russell because it looked like Miami had some blockers out there and a whole lot of real estate. Love seeing the young player coming up there one-on-one and making a tackle. Second and three play action for Wilson on the roll. He will throw. Fading again. and he’s got the completion to Destridge. It’s a Miami first down into Lions territory and Michigan State returns to Fort Field Saturday, November 29th. Their game against Maryland. Scan that QR code right there on the screen for ticket information. Should be a big game late in the season for the Spartans trying to get back to a bowl game. Now Kelvin Shepard’s defense for the first time seeing Miami on a sustained drive behind the former Jet Zack Wilson. Secondyear man Jaylen Wright off the stretch play. They just barely got it to him. Wilson had to ramble to get him the ball as Chris Smith, the secondyear man out of Notre Dame, chopped him down. Yeah. and and you’ve got to be ready to do a lot of cardio against this Miami offense with how much they like to stretch the field. It’s a lot of outside zone. It’s a lot of jet sweeps. We talked about it last week maybe with Atlanta with all the motions and I don’t think they motioned one time. We talked about it. They didn’t seem to have talked about they didn’t agree with us. But this Miami team, we’ve already seen a couple times those little jet sweeps trying to get motions. And a lot of times when you’re motioning on offense, you’re just trying to gather information, right? You’re trying to see what type of coverage maybe if you can get a guy to trigger and show you blitz. This Miami offense loves the motion game. They fake the toss. They go over the middle to Pharaoh Brown. There is a marker down. It’s Wilson to Pharaoh Brown. It’s all the way back at the 34 at the near side. It’s a gain of 30 if it stands. But there you see that all that motion. The fake toss. Illegal formation. Often the right tackle was on the end of the line. Five yd penalty. Second down. TJ, how does an illegal formation feel? Because it’s because nobody’s covering him up. So, he’s the endman on the line. This receiver has to be able to get on the line, especially if that tight end’s back. So, I know that I know that the uh tackle is going to get credited with the penalty, but that’s not on you. That is on the receiver. You have to know if you’re the endman on the on the line, you have to be on the football. So, Larry Borne feels okay. Yes. That’s Larry Bournem is not going to get yelled at by the coaches on the sidelines. Enough for that at least. Wilson on the pump. He will throw it down the sideline and that is incomplete. [Music] TJ Miller had the coverage and that was really nice coverage on Ezukaba. He was stuck to it TJ. Great coverage. We’re getting saw a lot of zone earlier in this series. Now we’re getting manto man with Miller Jr. out there. Great job right here too. Looking back for [Music] See how many Kelvin Shepard brings. The linebackers inch up to the line. Stewart’s coming for sure. It’s a quick hitter. It goes to Eskridge and he breaks free. D E S Eridge down to the 10 yd line. got through the trees there. It’s a gain of 27. Picking his way through. Aquedin Mohamed got down to tackle him. Yeah, just a quick screen out to the right side. Miami is able to get, you can see, three, four offensive linemen out front. Grant Stewart might have had a chance. I’ll tell you what though, I mean, I know you don’t want to give up a big chunk play on third and long, but Ali Mohamd to hustle to be able to come down here right at the finish and be able to save a touchdown. That’s the effort that you can coach. That’s a play that you’re going to put up on the screen tomorrow and say, you know what, didn’t go our way at the beginning, but find a way to finish. We heard a lot about finishing plays over the last couple days. Here’s Jaylen Right. Stewart got the ball free and it’s picked up behind the play. Looked like Tanner Connor scooped it, the tight end, but Grant Stewart rad it out of the hands of Right. And another one of those just wide zones. Right. It looks like there’s going to be some space. Grant Stewart the physicality to come knock the tight end off and really force the running back to probably go a little bit farther outside than he wanted to. And then watch got the rib right there. Man, that is good stuff. That’s what Kelvin Shepard wants. Attack the football. Find a way to force more fumbles and get the ball out of the running back’s hands. I think it has been a huge emphasis. We’ve already seen it loose a couple times from this Miami offense. Kelvin Shepard’s going to like that rep a lot from Grant Stewart. First couple weeks, not a whole lot. The turnover department springing the ball free. Wilson drops it off over the middle. He’s got Esbridge and Esbridge is in. Touchdown. [Applause] Rock Yine tried to keep him from the goal line, but Estridge breaks through. The former Western Michigan Bronco has the first score this afternoon. And let’s see though. Let’s see if he got in. Watch that right knee. Does it go down before? I think he’s outside of that. That’s close. Yeah, his knee never went down unless he stayed unless he somehow that time. Nice design from Miami just finding a wide open escridge over the middle of the field. And really good second effort from him being able to get to that pylon. This is the type of eye candy that we expected to see last week. And actually, I would imagine truth serum for Dan Campbell and Kelvin Shepard. You’d rather have people run things like this in a preseason game, right? And stress your eyes and you get a ton of valuable reps. A lot of time, the only time you need in the NFL to be make a difference between a a really good play and potentially a good defensive stop. And that’s what happened for Estridge to get free. The extra point good for Jason Sanders. I think you see a little bit of a culture change, Goldie, with some of the guys they’ve drafted and some of the players they’ve brought in. Just a different attitude. Um, you know, the linebacking core, I mean, I mean, those guys are all in. Uh, Brooks, all the all all that that has been very busy so far today. He’s down to the 30 and you see the Dolphins are excited about the coverage. Last year, this Lions team despite all the in room. Allen will throw. It’s on first down. It’s a little bit high for Kennedy. And it’s incomplete with Ethan Bonner in the area. Just a couple of balls off the hand of Allen that are a little bit high today. Yeah. And very similar to the throw that we saw to Isaac Tesla earlier in the game where it’s just going to be a over route coming off that play action. And Tom Kennedy’s a lot shorter than Isaac Tesla, right? So, you think you have to just be aware of the personnel that you have in there. Kyle Allen, not a bad decision. You like the fact that he’s throwing to the guy he’s supposed to be throwing to. The execution could just be a little bit smoother right now. To chat about this roster, its construction, and where the Lions are going in just a couple of weeks for the opener against the Packers. That’ll be exciting. You talk to Brad. We’ll pry him away from the game for a couple minutes. Yeah, a couple plays. And the one thing that I think we all know with Brad and even Dan, everybody that you know does press conf, they’re open and and they’re honest. They’re going to tell you exactly what they’re thinking and what they’re looking for. So excited to hear from Brad Holmes just to the far side. So the far side chains are moving and the near side ones go right after that. So they do give Love at the first down. Credit to him for getting to the marker in his first catch.
