Pirates vs. Cubs Game Highlights (8/16/25) | MLB Highlights

frustrating loss yesterday. The Cubs find themselves looking up at the Brewers in the Central. And so we focus on the wildard race right now and the Cubs firmly in possession of a wild card spot. But you just got to keep winning. 20 and three this team with Sha out after a loss. Iaga leads the Cubs out onto the field. Shoda at home. It has been certainly appointment television. Swing and a miss. Struck him out and a good start for Mike. That’s pitch execution perfectly from the Monog, the first hitter, and wasting no time on three pitches. Ground ball right at Meo. Gathers it in. And on four pitches, there are two outs. Reynolds swings and it’s a high-fly ball deep right. Tucker angling toward the line. He’s on the track. Backing up, makes the catch near the corner for out number three. Pirates go down in order here in the top of the first. Nico her after the game was saying, “We have gotten impressive starting pitching for a while now in a way where offense should be able to support them.” But when I asked Craig Councel, “Are you guys just waiting for that moment and then it all clicks?” He said, “The moment that you’re talking about is we need to score runs.” Bottom of the first inning, Cubs coming to bat for the first time this afternoon against Mike Burroughs. That’s drilled right center field and a base hit. Reynolds over to cut it off and Michael with a solid single and the leadoff man is aboard. Lead off guy getting the 3-1 count. gets a fast ball right down Main Street right to first and Pagarro playing catch. Double play. Hitting the ball in the air. That’s been the issue for Kyle during this stretch that he’s been on. Hits the ball hard. But when you hit the ball hard on the ground, especially with a runner on first base, that’s usually going to be a double play ball. And that’s what ended up happening. I’ll tell you what, in today’s game, you hit the ball on the ground, you’re out. And it’s swung on. Shot to the right center field gap in pursuit. Canario and on the run he makes the catch and Mike Burroughs will face the minimum short Iaga on the mound. The Pirates clean up man Nick Gonzalez at the plate. Jack swing on a peel. He went around says the first base umpire Phil Cousy. Strike three. Gonzalez retired. One away. He swings and misses at a splitter low. Strike three. And a line drive hit to deep center but playable for Carl Armstrong roaming to right center. Now he makes the catch for out number three. Six up, six down, middle two, no scores as we begin the top half of the third inning here at Wrigley Field. That one is in there and Pagarro is gone on strikes. This is a split that he just pulls a little bit but ends up being a strike. Line drive. Come on, Danby Swats and the Gold Glover ranging to his right and steals a hit. Great play as he robs Canario. Once again, Dansby proven why he’s a gold glover as he gets a great jump on this ball and that’s it. The first step to his right allows him to get extended. Connor Falefa grounds one to short ranging to his left. Swanson fields on the edge of the outfield. Grasses throw acrosses in time. Up nine down for Pittsburgh. Nico her digs in with Mike Burroughs on the mound. Nico grounds one in right field for a base hit. That’s the first second hit of the ball game. Michael Bush let off the first with a single and now her reaches base to begin the third. Comes back to strike him out. Such a good pitch. swung on, hit sharply down to third. IKF to second one. Gonzalez turns two first. It’s a double play. 543 and it’s the second in three innings that Mike Burroughs has induced. And that’s 10 in a row. Retired by Show Imanaga to begin the game. Tommy Fam the batter. And that ball is in the air. Tommy Fam will get the Pirates on the board. Long home run. Pirates strike first. Tommy Fam with a solo shot. A one- nothing lead here in the fourth. Well, Fam has been extremely hot here as of late and he didn’t miss it. He hits this ball out on the street. This one’s out on Wavelin Avenue, but it’s a split that really didn’t do anything. Just kind of goes a change up. Fam, he smokes this ball. 428 ft blast by Fam. Exit velocity 110 mph. Busch is retired. Here comes Kyle Tucker. Grounded into a double play on the ground and that one gets through. Tucker’s aboard. mentioned hitting it hard and hitting it on the ground and he scorches this ball and you can almost see as he’s running down the first baseline a little bit of relief. Tucker at second. Pro Armstrong at first. Two away and Carson Kelly two up the middle that’ll get through. Here comes Tucker around third. Tucker’s in to score. An RBI single for Carson Kelly. 1-1. There we go. We wanted a two out hit. Carson Kelly wasting no time on the first pitch. That’s how you go out there after you give up a run. He come right back and put it right back on him. We mentioned hitting the ball on the ground. When you hit it in the right spot, it can lead to RBI singles back up the middle. Cubs tie it up one to one. Half draws a walk. And now the bases are loaded for Nico Hornet. Gets him to pop it up. No further damage. Cubs tie up the game but leave the bases loaded after four. Two away. The batter Jared Triolo swung on and that’s lined sharply left field. Hap is back over his head and off the base of the wall. Picked out of the ivy by Hap who’ll fire it back in towards the infield. It’s a two-out double for Jared Triolo. Inside ball four short on misses with a fast ball. So Fam heads to first. The Pirates have two on with two out. Brian Reynolds their number three hitter. Two up. It’s the first time Ian has walked a batter since July 19th against the Red Sox. It’s a pop fly right center field. Pro Armstrong fighting the sun makes the catch. Out number three. Pirates lead two. Short Ibanaka still on the mound for the Cubs. Bounce towards third. Charging Shaw has play. Gonzalez is out. One out here in the seven highf fly ball. H wanders on the track. He has it. And that is out number two. And now the Pirates threatening men at the corners with two away. Alexander Canario duo. And now the Cub fans knowing how important this pitch is, want a strike out. Can I work out of the jam? Swing and a miss. Strike three. Imanaga gets Canario with the splitter. And the Pirates leave men at the corners. Cubs one, Pirates one. How Tucker say Suzuki and Pete Bro Armstrong. Two up for the Cubs on the ground through the right side hole in a base hit and Tucker is aboard. So the leadoff man is on base. Seo Suzuki now stands in. Runner goes and no throw. It’s a stolen base and Kyle Tucker swipes his 25th. Suzuki grounds one up the middle through for a base hit. Tucker being waved around. He’s coming home. The throw nowhere near in time. RBI single sale Suzuki. And the Cubs take the lead. Two to one over the Pirates here in the eighth. And advancing to second on the throw home, Suzuki. That’s what the Cubs have been needing for a while. Seiya gets a pitch right down the middle at the knees and hits it right back through the middle. Decided to intentionally walk Hap with Nico her right-handed hitter. Two up. Two away. Bottom of the eighth fitting at the corners. Line drive base hit out into left center field. H’s on the move racing for third. Nico to second and he’s in. And the Cubs add on and the intentional walk doesn’t work. But an RBI double for Nicoer. And the Cubs add a insurance run that is much needed. Three to one Cubs here in the last of the eight. Now that’s an off speed pitch and Nico just hammers this ball back through the middle but hooks it enough to left center field. Big swing in the bat by Nico. Top of the ninth here at Wrigley. Brad Keller now on the mount as Gonzalez begins the ninth with a single the other way. Cold strike three fast ball 98 mph. McCutchen retired one away. Inside corner got him. Two outs here in the ninth. The Pirates are down to their last strike. Brown on its feet. Got it. Cubs win. Keller finishes it off and the Cubs bounce back and beat the Pirates 3-1.

  1. Cubs pitching has been lights out, but we need more runs. This slump is got to be ending soon, hopefully we get the series tomorrow. Then the red hot brewers coming to Wrigley Field shoot out….Go Cubs Go!!

  2. Arrrr… Outdueled at the Wrigley confines… Our complete lack of offensive battle prowess is an ugly sight to behold, me raggedy Maties… Regardless of our current standing, we must fight to the bitter end for the honor and pride of the Jolly Roger… Arrrr 🏴‍☠️

  3. Cubs are fine. We've won some games this year that we probably shouldn't have and have lost some games this year that we shouldn't have. Over 162 games it's hard to be at your best every single game. I'm thinking that some regulars need a game off here and there to keep them as fresh as possible so guys like castro and McGuire, etc.. need to pick up their teammates and be more than backups this point of the season. They need to produce . Taillon and assad should be nice and fresh for the stretch run. All the great play and hard work early in the season to mid point and past has given them a lil breathing room in the wild card standings. The brewers are just on a different level right now so don't focus on them as much as taking care of the lil things from game to game and with the talent and experience on the roster they should be fine. I'm not that concerned. Hey being 17 games over .500 this point of the year is better than what it has been recently. A lot better actually. Each game still matters and that's all you can ask for from a team you root for. Go cubs go

  4. The Brewers have a lock on the division, so we must start winning some games to secure a wild-card spot. I would hate to see the Cubs be eliminated from playoff contention by the Mets or the Cardinals, but it could happen. Just win some games.
