Steelers vs. Buccaneers Recap (Preseason Week 2) | Steelers Extra Point | Pittsburgh Steelers

Hello and welcome to the neighborhood Ford store extra point. The Steelers responding to some early adversity in this one to get back into the game. Here’s Derek Harman with a big sack. Love to see it. In the end, it was not enough. The Steelers were down 174 with the final there. I’m AJ Ross joined by former Steelers O lineman Raone Foster. You double dipped tonight. You were on the sidelines for the radio broadcast. How long did it take you to sprint up here? You know what? Miscommunication happened a little bit and I had to sprint a little bit, but here we’re here. The job is done and we got a final along with a loss by the uh Steelers tonight and just looking at the way the flow of the game was too. A lot of back and forth from guys had to step up. Logan Lee, I know his name is not going to pop to a lot of people, but looking at the double duty that he did tonight by playing defensive tackle and also having to beat the emergency long snapper, that is a tough task right there, AJ. So, I’m really excited about what some of the young guys did too, watching some of Roman Wilson step up on a night like tonight. And also, Caleb Johnson seemed to have found his method as far as his ability to run the football in the NFL. That’s a field type of position right there. And sometimes you need a lot more reps and I feel like Caleb Johnson got that. Well, let’s take a further look at the summary and the numbers supporting some of the key points that you just brought up there with, you know, big plays and especially on defense and special teams tonight. There were some stats supporting just what you were talking about. Yes, absolutely. Mason Ruall started off pretty good tonight, too. But again, seeing Caleb Johnson, 11 rushes, 50 yards was awesome because he was downhill like heck. And again, I don’t know what to call him right now, but but Skyler Thompson is just dealing as much as you need a guy like him to do in these moments. But what I love about this graphic more than anything is second year, two receptions, 72 yards. I think he had a whole lot more underneath him if Caleb Johnson had led him a little bit more with Roman Wilson. That’s the type of stuff you want to see from him. Again, this team is searching for a valid number two. Again, Calvin Austin is good, but Roman Wilson is a high draft pick that you want to see the return on your investment with him and I love seeing that tonight. Well, speaking of Roman Wilson, our Missy Matthews actually caught up with him just moments ago. Roman, two catches for 72 yards. What do you make of your performance tonight? Uh, just get all give all the glory to God and, you know, keep working, you know, till next time. What was it like getting back into this game, especially as an offensive unit? It feels good. You know, it’s always good to come out here, especially at a home stadium with the fans. Um, like I said, it’s just a real blessing. In terms of Logan Lee, one of your draft classmates, uh, we saw him do a little bit of everything tonight. Uh, I’m sure you’re not surprised, but what did it look like to you in terms of the emergency long snapper and playing defense? I mean, he’s a dog. He does it all. I spent a lot of time with him last year. Uh, great dude. I love him. He’s a dog. He does it all. We talked to DK Metaf during the game and he was singing your praises and saying to watch out for big things. What does it mean to have somebody like that in your wide receiver room to teach you, to learn from, and to be a voice of reason sometime? Yeah, I mean, it’s a real honor. DK is um he’s definitely one of those guys, one of one, and for him to be praising me like that, it’s a real blessing. But, you know, this team is just different. And you know, I’m really expecting a lot of big things from this team. All right, thanks so much. We appreciate it. Thank you. Thanks, Missy. That interview was presented by Ticketmaster, the official marketplace of the NFL. Visit ticketmaster.com/steelers. Raone, what do you think about a young guy like that, Roman Wilson, and the big bright lights not being too big for him in moments like that? He he played at a big time university number one. Having him answer the call right now after the year that he had last year, the setbacks that he had and finally be able to prove yourself. I feel like when you’re a young guy in the NFL, you got about one maybe two years to show your worth and he’s steadily doing that right now. So, I’m proud of him even in the preseason AJ having a guy like him step up and match his competition and I think he should be able to help this team in a lot of ways this upcoming 2025 season and showing out against a formidable defense in Tampa Bay. Steelers fans, we want to hear from you. Who was your player of the game? Post your comments on social media using the hashtag Steelers Nation and we may feature it on our broadcast tonight. These Steeler social media posts are presented by South College, proud partner of the Pittsburgh Steelers. And we’re headed to break here on the neighborhood Ford store extra points. But when we come back, we’re going to chat it up with the guys who called the game Bob and Charlie right after this. The neighborhood stores extra point is brought to you in part by ReMax Select. Remax voted the most trusted real estate agents. And now it’s time to bring back the guys who called tonight’s game Bob Pompiani and Charlie Batch. Guys, I want to get your takeaways from tonight. Well, there are a lot of them AJ. A lot of interesting things happening. You guys mentioned Logan Lee. To me, that’s a starting point because that’s a tough situation for anyone to come in. But first, let’s take a look at the stats of the game. The final stats which are brought to you by NSS Life. NSS Life featuring lowcost life insurance and high yielding annuities. And Charlie, when you look at this two for 12 on third down, that’s something the Steelers got to change, but they put themselves back a lot with some pre- snap penalties. They had third and long quite a bit. Yeah. And when you have three turnovers, it starts there. You can’t turn the football over. But the alarming stat right there is two for 12 on third downs. They had great success last week. That was a key for me coming into this game. And unfortunately, they fell short in that department. Each of the three quarterbacks had an interception tonight. So, we’re going to take a look at Charlie’s breakdown. Quarterback analysis brought to you by Cleveland Brothers. Uh Charlie, let’s start with Mason Rudolph. He had a turnover right off the bat under throwing Roman Wilson, but then he came back with a nice drive and a big long connection to Roman over the middle. Yeah, as a quarterback, you have to be short- minded. You turn over the football early. Now, you want to respond. Mason was able to do that big play to Roman Wilson down the field, then was able to throw that touchdown pass to Johnson as he was giving way to Skyler Thompson. And we’ll take a look at the stats here. You can see Mason as he’s sitting back creating with his feet as he’s trying to pick up a first down right there. Here’s the play that I was talking about to Roman Wilson. Big play down the field. High pointing the football. Mason nothing to the right. Sliding to the left right there. Keeping his eyes downfield. Johnson finding him in the end zone for a touchdown. So, it was good to see him. I know he’s frustrated because he turned the football over, but either way, I thought he responded in a big way. But it’s certainly how he responded to it. And he did. He came right back after that and made a tone for it. Now, let’s talk about Skyler Thompson, his second game. And again, 10 of 15, 113 yards. He did have an interception. However, overall, he moved the ball when he had to do it. I think he did a pretty good job. Yes, he did. And that’s the one, you know, turn around as down the field. He’s able to deliver a lot of accurate balls here today. You can see him on the move right there just finding Johnson to pick up a big first down there. Keep keep a drive moving. And nice ball here to Scotty Miller on a crossing route. And those are things that happens. And when anytime that you get to that point, I know he’s going to be frustrated because he threw the ball in the coverage. Even though that ball was turned over, it was one of those ones that put him in a questionable deep defensive pass interference. Steelers lose 1714. A lot of good, some things to work on. AJ and Raone, let’s go back to you. Thanks, guys. Definitely some things to clean up. And Ramon, I’d asked you coming into this game, your thoughts on the O line and the depth there and what you needed to see tonight. What were your takeaways with that position group? I thought that the first group did exactly what you needed them to do. They sustain. They move the ball up and down the field. When you speak about the second and third unit, those is one of those guys that they got to know their processes. Well, we have uh coach Mike T at the podium right now. Possession downs. I think we were 0 for five say at the half as an example of that. Um we got a penalty roughing the kicker um where they where they were settling for three and we put them back on the field and they eventually got a touchdown. And you lose games when things like that happen. We lost leverage in the red zone and some passes there early on allowed them to to score seven and we got to make people settle for three um on the short field. We spent too much time working in the short field. We understand how important leverage is in that space. Um but we didn’t execute it and so there’ll be a lot to learn obviously from this game because of that. There certainly were some positive things. I thought several players took a step forward. two two young guys in particular. I thought Harmon and and Caleb Johnson really took a step forward off of their first performance. But again, that’s a reasonable thing to expect. Um second time stepping into a stadium. You see more of their talents. I think we talked about that a couple of days ago in anticipation of the game. From a health standpoint, uh Christian Coun had a chest injury uh that’s being evaluated. Uh Gareth Warren um is being evaluated for concussion. Um, and then we got some other bumps and bruises associated with play, many of which work their way back into the game. And so we’re working on a short week. We’ll get ready to carry the Carolina to finish off our instadium preseason work. And so we’ll work with extreme urgency. But for us, a major component of that is analyzing the self-inflicted wounds that were really kind of characteristic tonight and hadn’t been us um throughout this process, but it’s definitively was us tonight. pause and open up for questions. You saw from Roman Wilson and can he become or is he becoming a viable threat in your past game? You know, he’s had a good camp. Um, and he’s, you know, he’s backed that up with with some quality instadium play. And so feel good about the overall trajectory of him, but you know, we got another game in a couple more weeks and, you know, that time is critical for a young guy and so he’s got to keep his foot on the gas and keep keep working. with Caleb. Anything specific that you really liked about his game, especially in that third quarter? I just thought we saw more of his talents this time around, and that’s a reasonable expectation. You know, he’s been in the stadium, the mystique of it is over and and so as people get settled in and more comfortable with with their roles in this NFL environment, I think you’re just going to see more of their talents and it just felt like we saw more of his talent tonight. Did you see a little bit of what you wanted to see from Caleb Johnson? Yes. What do you think about the progress so far of the offensive line? I like the overall trajectory of it. Um, but again, as I mentioned, the same discussion with Roman. Um, that’s a young collective, you know, a bunch of second year, third year types and and so like each and every day from a developmental standpoint is critical. And so we got another instadium opportunity. We got several more weeks of work and and I expect them to continue to utilize it and continue to evolve uh individually and collectively. just the guy to get you out of the stadium as a long snapper and would you have to sign somebody if Christian can’t come back? You know, I’m not ready to talk hypotheticals regarding Christian. I think we got some good news there. Um, but I certainly was pleased with the work that Logan gave us tonight. Um, he’s worked at since he’s been here. Um, versatility helps him and helps us. Mike was okay. Yes. Mike Skyler didn’t get a lot of reps early in camp. Has anything he’s done surprised you? What has impressed you about him? It really has not. Um, you know, this guy’s played some NFL football, man. Um, he’s had some starts and so forth in Miami and and so I’m not surprised that it’s not too big for him. I’m not surprised that his talent is showing. He’s a diligent worker. Um, one man’s misfortune is often times another man’s opportunity. We We live by that and and certainly Will’s misfortune is his opportunity and he’s he’s taken a nice advantage of it. What did you think about Cole Hogan’s play? You know, I thought I thought on the surface it was solid. Um, but I don’t have anything other than that. Um, from a reactionary standpoint, I certainly will next time we come together. Coach, one more. Mike, you got the first team offensive line out of there, I think, after the first quarter. Would you expect them in the last game maybe to go a little longer than that? We’ll see. You know, I’ll talk to you guys before we play. usually 48 hours before we play. I’ll give you some indication of what our plans are um and we’ll kind of go from there. Thanks, guys. We got a much longer press conference from Mike Tomlin this week and we’d love to see it. And earlier in the show, we asked you who was your player of the game. Here’s some of your responses. Tyler says Roman Wilson. Great choice there. Inside the dome says Logan Lee. Logan was definitely clutch tonight and Christian Holmes and Caleb Johnson from the Steel Beam. Love those answers. We really appreciate you guys. Expinity. Bring on the good stuff. Time now to revisit our immaculate prediction. I asked you Ramon and the fans, would the Steelers have more than 300.5 passing yards? You said no. I said no. You said no. AJ, you were correct. Two for two. You’re on a roll and so are probably some of the fans who played on the mobile app tonight. But that’s pretty awesome. It is. Now time to look at some of the highlights from tonight. As we mentioned, it was adversity to start for this team, but then they started clipping on off. They did. Absolutely, man. Open the game up with a beautiful ball right there from Mason Rudolph to the guy that needed it, Roman Wilson. Big time. And again, when did Mason get this mobile right here in the end? Love that. And of course, special teams have to be special. You got a rookie right there from Tampa making a rookie mistake and they capitalized off of it. And one person that needed a game like this at the running back position right there, Caleb Johnson. AJ, again, he’s a guy that needs that as they go in to close that that drive off. Um, big time night for him. And on the defensive side, Gez, I guess I got to talk about those guys a little bit, too. But again, you see guys in the back field making plays and again, ball by Keano. Beautiful job by him. Can’t get to the quarter. You got to be able to get the ball down on the ground. And here again, I got we speak about the first round Derek Harman just pushing a man down all the way through the ground. This is what this team has devised of right here. Defense and taking the ball to the end zone. Got to have more of that going into this regular season. Yeah. And we’re going to look at some of the game notes here. Rudolph finishes with a touchdown and interception. Absolutely. Mention. Uh go ahead. I absolutely three receptions for a touchdown as we saw him cap off that drive. And right there, Steelers recovered two fumbles. That’s the hidden yardage right there to put you on the short field. Got a lot of guys rolling, but good to see some good stuff. Absolutely. And we have much more coming up on the neighborhood store extra point, including an interview with Derek Carman coming up. Our home opener is right around the corner and you could win a trip to Stadium presented by Bo Giant Eagle and UPMC for our game against the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday, September 14th. You and a guest could win hotel accommodations, roundtrip airfare, and two game tickets. Get your terrible towels waving and enter now by scanning the QR code. And Derek Harman is a name we heard over and over again. He had that big sack. He had a tackle for a loss and a quarterback hit. He is at the podium. Derek, can you walk us through that sag and that rush that he executed there? Um, really just playing within the defense. Uh, trying to do my best to help the team out best of my ability. Derek, how do you feel like you progressed from the first preseason game to this one? Confidence building. Anything change? Yeah, man. Um, week one was kind of rough for me, but um, I took a big, not a big jump, but I just more trusted my abilities in the second game and um, still a lot of work to do in the back end, man. Still a lot of work far as me individually in the team. So, it’s ready to get back to work. It seemed like you got your hands quickly up on your defenders, helped you establish your leverage. Was that part of what you felt was a little bit different this week or was there some other part of you just you felt was sharp? Um, yeah, you could know just playing with my long arms. I got long arms, so just playing with that consistently and u doing the best of my ability at the end of the day. Think the defensive front did better moving the line of scrimmage back than last week. It seemed like especially in the first half, you guys made a few plays in the back field. Yeah. Um like I said, we um just try and get better every week, man. Um something Cam said, um don’t make the same mistakes this week. Just get better. Um make new mistakes and little things like that. So um like Coach T always says, make make new mistakes. Don’t make the same mistakes. So that’s what we going to do. Derek, you showed you showed a lot of emo you showed a lot of emotion there with the sack. What’s going through your head there? Um first second as a rookie man. It felt good. Um it’s the preseason so um was ready to get that one in the regular season. That’s it. Derek Harman making his presence known on the Dline which brings us to the Citizens Bank position room. Raone your thoughts on this group right here. It’s just a good group from young guys to older guys man. They incorporate Derek Harmon into this group. You got a a middle class guy when Keano Benton in his third year going into this thing and a savvy veteran that Cameron Hayward is 15 years. The Marmala show growth. We talked about Isaiah Loudermilk a little bit last year. I think some of the younger guys got a little bit more burned tonight. So, it was just one of those situations where Pittsburgh has always done a job of having the next plans in place. So, I’m excited to see the growth of these guys. We’re already seeing it right now from Keo Ben. smart enough to know earlier in the game he wasn’t capable of being in a position to sack the quarterback. So, he had to get his hands up to get the ball down. So, it’s good to see them have good stuff. Definitely a group we can be excited about. And we have much more coming up on the neighborhood store extra point. When we come back, we will preview the next game in Carolina. The Pittsburgh Steelers and Commonwealth Press are back with limited edition game day posters by local artists. One for each home game, plus a commemorative season design with all proceeds benefiting artist image resource. Grab yours on game day at the Steelers Pro Shop. So Raone, we have one more preseason game. It’s bittersweet. I’m having so much fun with you. Thank you. I appreciate it, man. That’s what the preseason’s for, right? Right. But it’s a quick turnaround for these guys. What do you think Mike T is looking for from this group, especially it’s a show improve period for a lot of guys to make this roster. It is. And it’s that show and prove part of it I think that has to be settled. One of the one competitions that we drew do have is at the punter position where you have Corus Waitman and and uh Cam Johnson. Those two guys are battling it out right now. They’re in position to where they’re doing some really good stuff either for the Steelers or for somebody else. So, I think seeing those two guys settle that battle that they have going on too. And again, that’s one portions of the game right there where you have to have some good come out of you. You got to be able to have those hidden yardages. And I think that’s a crucial part right there for this team to figure out. What other key positions do you feel are really, you know, a point for contention? I think the backup tackle position, seeing who settles right there. And again, who of that that third and fourth group is going to be able to be that interior defensive lineman. We see what Derek Harmon can do, but will it end up being YA Black is one of the rotational guys, too, and seeing that wide receiver position step up? We’ve seen Roman take some steps moving forward, too. But, of course, he’s been a lone wolf in this group of talent that they have, but of course, they have some stars that they got to find their way with right now. Well, thank you, Ramon. And we want to thank everyone for watching the Neighborhood Fort Steelers. Extra points. That’s all the time we have for tonight. We thank the team, coaches, staff, and everyone involved in this production tonight. And of course you our fans for watching.
