What did he say? – Mike Shildt speaks on Dodgers sweep San Diego Padres; reclaim #1 seed in NL West

I’m going to show up tomorrow and ready to play baseball. Um didn’t play as well as we’d like to have and series didn’t go like we wanted to, but um we know we’re capable of we get ready to play tomorrow. This team is uh more than in a great place. It seemed like getting the big hit when you needed it. The comeback was done, but just getting that big hit when you needed it. Yeah, just got down, got behind the eightball and um you know, Darvis rided the ship, you know, a little bit was able to get through four and you know, a clean clean two, three, and four to keep it right there. And um you know the bullpen just didn’t have a lot of margin for error. Did a fantastic job. Adam, Estrada. Um, and you know, listen, with with Robert, you know, we’re looking to go get bets to finish the eighth if we need to because had to pick up Estrada in the seventh and he hadn’t pitched in a while, so he’s already high. So, we got him ready for the eighth and, you know, Muki put a swing on him, but otherwise, he was good as well. Just um because we got down, we couldn’t create that margin for error that um you know, trying to come back. But yeah, to your point, it was just two for 14 running scoring position. Just couldn’t get the proverbial big hit. But man, fought her tail off to to come back. Could easily said, you know what, it’s not our day again. Down four. Um and the fight just came back. That’s why this team will be just fine starting again tomorrow. What happened to Jackson that he needed to leave the ball game? Uh he’s been dealing with an ankle that’s been bothering him a little bit. Um you know, it’s kind of a stickier batter box, I guess, when he turned it tweaked yesterday and um a little ginger in the first up with bass didn’t look quite right. So just want to stay ahead of it and get him out of there. You think that’s dayto-day? Stay ahead of it, do you think? Correct. Yeah. I mean, it’s sore, but we don’t think it’s something that at the moment’s going to linger beyond a day-to-day type thing. How you playing coming into this series and then to lose three here? Like, do you just kind of view that as part of the the baseball calendar, the ups and downs of it, or is it is there something else too kind of the way this weekend went? Um, it’s not for me. I mean, people may have draw their own conclusions, but not for me in the least. I mean, if your body of work afterund and however many games played and the body of work that says, you know, whatever the record’s been consistently over the last, you know, month and a half, whatever that looks like, exactly. Um, and the body of work really for the for the season, the body of the work with a large portion of last year’s team, if you think we’re going to over, you know, look at three games and and get overly concerned about it, are we disappointed? Absolutely. I won’t minimize that. Um, but it just only strengthens our resolve and the confidence in our team amongst this team within ourselves is very strong. Obviously, it played out pretty probably how you imagined it might with sticking with Sheets there against the lefty. You knew you could use a Glacius later, but can you speak to Sheets and how he came through against the lefty there? Yeah, you know, I mean, there was a couple decisions in there. Um, you know, Sheetsy and O’Harn, you know, great job. you know, we know don’t know exactly how it’s going to unfold, but we look at and know a glacius maybe letter for Croni Vessia. There’s there’s some math involved with that. Um, thank God it’s not too complicated a math. It’s baseball math. I can handle that. Um, but yeah, confidence in sheets to be able to take a good at bat as well as a hearn and both rewarded it with the ball down the line and the double by. Manny’s carried you for a lot of the year only only one RBI this month. What are you seeing in his past recently? Um, you know, listen, Manny’s a big part to AJ’s point. You know, the confidence in this team is high for a lot of reasons. And a big part of that reason is Manny Machado. Um, you know, one RBI. You know, look, I don’t we can blink and I’m pretty confident within a week or so we’ll be talking and be like, man, Manny’s got eight RBI’s in the last 5 days. Um, so we’re not concerned about it. Um, you know, he did get a couple tough pitches, you know, that they were trying to in his first at bat. you know, they’re not they’re pitching him tough. I mean, that’s pretty clear. They’re not gonna Manny was a guy looked like they were targeting that was not going to beat them. Um, and he did a nice job of staying in the strike zone. Um, and unfortunately, some pitches that are outside the strike zone got called on him. Um, which again is unfortunate when they’re not trying to throw strikes all the time to him. They’re taking their chances and to get rewarded on balls that are outside the zone is a little frustrating. Oriana stay hot. Will you be maybe looking for opportunities to move him up in the lineup or is that just your lineup’s pretty fixed the way he moves? Who’s that? Oriana. Oh, Oriana. Um, listen, I mean, you swing the bat. Well, I mean, there’s one thing we talk about. I understand the question, Jeff. It’s a very fair question. Um, we’ve gotten a lot of production at the bottom of our lineup. There for a while, I was getting a lot of questions about not getting production at the bottom of the lineup. Now, we’re getting production bottom lineups. I understand, you know, listen, you think about moving him up. Um, but I do trust the guys are at the top of our lineup as well. They’re um, very capable and and um, I would never take anything off the table, but um, he’s in a good spot and we need the guys at the top to continue to do what they’re capable of doing. Uh, very satisfying uh, considering where we were four days ago. Um just the way we uh you know ramped up the focus, the intensity and obviously uh you know winning three ball games here. Very uh tight ball games, you know, well played games and uh you know to come out of it with three wins uh is huge going into Denver. I think it was I think I think I think it was three runs in 10 innings by your bullpen. Um what can you say about just like the effort that they I I thought they did a good job of uh picking each other up. Um obviously uh you know it was really good to see uh Vesia do an up down and get a save right there and he wanted that opportunity uh if we took a lead and so um that was good right there. Felt good about that. I think um that reset him and also Blake, you know, getting him I think his outing resets him and so uh you know the guys just picked each other up um all series and um you know I thought we got some good starting pitching too. You look at those two starters and then you know with what Glass gave us today. You talk about that reset. How big is it for say Vessia have the problems he had Friday night and then come back today and give you what he gave you? It was great. It was great. And like I said that other night, I mean, he he’s pitched huge ball games for us. So, you know, there’s going to it’s not going to be linear all the time with with performance, but you just uh believe in the guy and um it was good to see him uh you know, ride it today with a great outing. Is that rookie that you’re used to seeing? Yeah, that was that was big. You know, I I think even this series, I thought he was just a little bit off, but finding ways to get on base. But, you know, to get a get into a good count and uh turn that fast ball around, that’s the Mookie we like. Big hit. You basically kind of turn things around when you basically said like, “My season’s over.” How freeing was that for him and how different of a muki have you seen the last week or so? Uh, you know, actually, it’s been a couple weeks. I I just think it’s it’s uh you know just to take the pressure off you know trying to recover from a season and kind of get more micro and just game to game at bat to at bat it’s just uh uh you know easier a better quality of life and certainly we’re seeing the performance from Muki you said you kind of said that the Sunday loss to the Blue Jays kind of stuck with you especially after you see them come out all the way back and tie how big was it to sort of get the momentum swing back towards you guys actually want to win this one uh it was it was huge Uh certainly feel a lot different than a week ago. Um you know today was the pen. I I thought the pen did a great job. I thought Tyler did a great job and obviously for I think six innings we were held scoreless after that first inning. Um you know obviously a huge hit early um by Freddy. But to really uh weather that inning, the last couple innings of a couple runs and then to you know get that big hit off a really good closer uh was was big and yeah feel a lot better today than a week ago. Did you got me? Here’s what’s coming up on the calendar. The Dodgers are about to hop on a plane and head to Colorado as they begin a 4-ame series with the Rockies tomorrow at Quarters Field. And then next Friday, it will be the Dodgers and Padres’s again, this time right down the road at Petco Park in San Diego. All of these games right here on Sportsnet

  1. My Dodgers are living rent free in the Padres heads🧠 It's too bad because they're such a talented team. I think it may be time to trade Tatis. His offensive production has dropped significantly.

  2. who cares, padres are still the same ass team we have always known. And the dodgers are still the same team that will get eliminated in playoffs by some team no one expected. So again who cares
