Yankees manager Aaron Boone was caught saying that they have the fewest base-running mistakes in baseball at the moment, which prompted Jomboy to do an pretty detailed analysis. Lucky for us, one of the categories we are leaning the league in is "Runner ran into an out unnecessarily." Woof.
Video should start at 13:57 where Jomboy watches a lot of ours to get a sense of how bad they are. I'm no baseball scholar, but I thought it was pretty interesting.

Add another accolade to Ben’s trophy case
I mean watching that he even said a lot of those weren’t as terrible as some of the Yankees mistakes. Some of them felt like they were on the coaches for sending them, but there are definitely really bad ones
“Ground ball to short, same thing (baserunner at 2nd runs into an out at third again). Why are they doing that? Is that the same runner (Horwitz)?!”
“I guess the Pirates haven’t learned that teams will throw out the trail runner?”
“Didn’t freeze on a line drive, that seems to be an issue.”
“These feel more like the Pirates don’t have a scout to stop them from doing this, or it’s just part of their fabric…”
“Trail runner again…wow.”
“It’s the trail runner again (starts laughing) Pirates what the fuck?!”
“Don’t tell me this is gonna be another trail runner….it is, it is! They have to be being coached this.”
“They just run to 3rd on contact even if the ball is hit to the left side.”
Easy to have the fewest base running mistakes when you have the fewest base runners
Jimmy identified our core base running woes in 5 minutes yet we’ve been doing it all year, do we have the dumbest coaching staff in history?
You know you watch too much Pirates baseball when you recognize all of these. That was like a super cut of times I’ve yelled “what the fuck” at the tv.
The running on contact to 3rd is especially infuriating.
I’m also curious how many times the trail runner has actually reached second base in those throw to home scenarios. I can’t remember many.
I haven’t watched enough this year to have a sense of it, but I wonder how many extra bases they’ve gained by sending the trail runner? As he says it seems like a strategy…and it’s possible it’s a good one if they are gaining extra bases that way too. Obviously this video is just looking at the times it didn’t work.
