  1. I’m not saying he was wrong. Just if I was in his position I wouldn’t have done it.

  2. Wow, I don’t remember this at all. 92mil for a 36 year old Dirk. Wasn’t 92mil a lot for NBA contracts at that time?

  3. Dallas should have never let Chandler go. The Rondo trade was more of a hindsight 20/20 thing, but if they hadn’t done it, it also could have saved Dirk’s final years there.

  4. If it was another team, maybe he might have considered it but there’s no way he would have ever gone to those two teams or the Spurs.

  5. That deal from the lakers likely would’ve defined some part of his legacy. Given his injuries and the lakers state at that time, I think it wouldn’t have been received well by fans.

He did the right thing for his legacy by being authentic to his humble personality.

  6. Weren’t there talks back then that they had some agreement that he’ll be a super expensive special advisor after the retirement? Which happened in the end.

He probably lost some money in the end but not 67m

  7. Is this when he basically gave them back all that money so they could sign Chandler Parsons? Shame he was injured for so much of his time in Dallas tbh, maybe could have been a great run

  8. Tbh there’s something of an unspoken agreement the players union asks of their members to not take much less than their value. Small discounts are okay but this was definitely way below what should have been.

  9. Then they traded his protigee for being fat so that the lakers could build around him for like 15% less money into the cap

  10. that time lakers were rolling out a starting 5 of wesley johnson, jordon hill, ellington, jordan clarkson, and tariq black.  dirk going to the lakers with that team would have been a disaster

  11. Pretty sure the rockets were an over the cap team so they would have had to trade 20+ million in outgoing salary. They had Howard and Harden taking up 57% of the cap already.

This doesn’t seem to be a real offer from the Rockets.

  12. They gotta do a deep study on Jeanie & Rob transactions outside of LeBron walking to LA, Klutch forcing the AD trade and Nico gifting them Luka.

Dirk for 92m in 2014 is absurd.

  13. He wanted the Mavs to be able to build around him and tbh they didn’t do a terrible job. Monte Ellis and Chandler parsons helped them have the top rated offense in the league. They got Tyson chandler back and added Jae Crowder but then came the Rajon Rondo trade; what should’ve been on paper a great addition became an immediate garbage fire. Carlisle feuded with Rondo constantly for half a season before rondo jumped in free agency, effectively ending the dirk led Mavs chances at a last title run.

  14. I’m pretty sure at that point he’s already had a child and his wife was pregnant. In that late chapter of his career, I believe life becomes a very important aspect of his decision. Yes, with that contract the Mavs could’ve been competitive, but I believe he was well settled in Dallas.

  15. Dennis Schroder rejecting $84 million was the closest thing he did that is similar to Dirk.

  16. wtf we’re Lakers doing here haha? Injured Kobe and old Dirk. Sounds fun on paper but I wonder how that impacts the Lakers if that happened.

  17. I get having team loyalty and giving them a discount, but that’s almost 1/4th of what he was offered elsewhere. If I was Dirk, they’d have to get that number up to at least $75m

  18. And he never made it out of the first round. But he definitely gave then cap space to try and assist in building a contender

  19. Is this supposed to be celebrated or something? Good on Dirk for losing out on $70 million in the name of “loyalty”. It really elevated his career and ranking. And Dallas definitely tried their best to put good players around him, now way that money just went back to the owner. But I guess that clap on the back for staying with one team is worth it.

  20. I may have actually died if he went to the lakers and we got the same timeline where Luka goes to then also.😅

  21. Good on Dirk but WTF Cuban was a cheap ass with a franchise legend. Seriously, under $9M a year, sorry but that’s a a slap in the face.

  22. The cool thing about being this selfless…

When you retire, the hometown fans will go ballistic telling you how much the love/appreciate you. You’ll be looked at with reverence for generations to come.

    No one like Dirk.

  23. My mate played tennis with Dirk and Steve Nash about a month ago. He said Dirk was the greatest mist humble guy. Said his eyes radiate goodness and he is competitive untouched by his fame. Just a genuine unicorn of a superstar personality wise. Absolute legend.

  24. Honestly, Dirk had a weird relationship with money anyway. His sister said in an interview once, that Dirk didn‘t even know how to cash checks. His mom took care of all that money. And I‘m not talking about the beginnings of his career.

  25. He didn’t deserve $90M at that point, but definitely deserved more than $25M. No idea why they even thought the Mavs could be seriously contending at that point. Chandler Parsons wasn’t going to significantly move the needle. Dirk ripped himself off.
