I can imagine the contrasting colours being a bit too much, but I love watching highloights of the 1970s particularly for this reason. Especially with the white backdrop of the ice, the game looked much more decorated at that time IMHO.

  1. Yes. Absolutely.

I mean Nashville yellow vs Dallas green or Toronto blue vs Vegas gold would be sweet.

Only issue is that so many teams are just red or blue. So it would have to be a very specific match ups.

  2. Those Seals jerseys actually look pretty good. Idk bout the matching helmet too though.

  3. I would love to see more color at the game. Growing up with the home team wore white and the road teams wore their colors, so you always had something new to see when you went to the game. Now it’s just the same home colors every game against a team in white. I get why they do it like that, but it’s still drab to me.

I can imagine that sometimes you may have two teams with close colors and uniform designs (Tampa and Toronto, Carolina and Chicago come to mind), so you will still need the white jerseys or an alternate third on occasion, but I’d be fine with more games where both teams wear their colors.

  4. Part of the reason these jerseys stand out there is no writing on the boards in the background. You’re not distracted.

  5. Maybe they should follow rugby and football (⚽) so it will bebwhere they can wear their main as long as it doesn’t clash with the home team. Example Dallas can wear their home when playing the Preds or Leafs. But if it’s clashing like Bruins and Kings, the away team wears the whites or maybe alts

  6. I’m not normally a nostalgia junkie but the way the NHL looked from the mid 60s through the late 70s is just absolutely wonderful. Admittedly, a big part of the aesthetic is players not wearing helmets, which is obviously not going to change nor should it, but it made for some absolutely amazing sports watching.

The colors, the pace and style of play, the goalies, and the haircuts — all were just gorgeous.

[We’re lucky to have a tiny handful of HD-quality footage from that era and it is just amazing to watch.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xSimhvX4tEI)

  7. Absolutely! In soccer, clubs usually have a primary and a secondary jersey, in addition to any 3rd jerseys, instead of a home and an away jersey. Teams often wear their primary jersey away, as long as it doesn’t clash with the home team’s jersey as approved by the referee. I don’t know why the NHL and hockey at all levels doesn’t do the same.

  8. Have you seen the Sharks current jerseys? They’re pretty much exactly what the Seals are wearing in this photo and they rock

  9. Idk. I’m still a sucker for Bruins v Habs. Just classic colors no matter who’s the home team

  10. Back when gold home jerseys were often used instead of white. More teams need the balls to do this now.

  11. Every team should have 4 unis they could choose from. Whites have to be at least one of them.
Then they can wear whatever so long as they clash with the other team

  12. Wings v Cane’s, Hawks, Habs and a few others would really suck.

I miss the old black Kings jerseys. Those looked nice and intimidating (if a uniform can be).

  13. The Maple Leafs Red Wings winter classic was the most esthetically pleasing game of all time, I’ll die on this hill

  14. This wasn’t standard the kings were like the lakers they didn’t have white uniforms until the 90s

  15. Fun fact about those LA jerseys. The reason they stopped wearing them was because someone informed them that the crown on that jersey is actually a queens crown. Kings crowns have the points on the outside edge. 👑

  16. This was only because the Kings home jerseys were yellow. Everyone else wore white at home. So it wasn’t what you’re thinking. So if the NHL reverted to the ’70s you would only see a non-white color by the home team from Nashville

  17. It really wasn’t all that common in the ’70s. LA was the only team that didn’t have a white jersey. They wore gold at home & purple on the road (just like the Lakers).

Colour vs. colour can look good when done correctly, but the logistics of picking the jerseys based on the matchup are way too complicated. Equipment managers have a thankless enough job as it is without having to worry about packing multiple sets of gear for a road trip

  18. Yes, yes, a thousand times yes.

As a British sports fan who loves the NHL (and the NFL for that matter), it does my head in that there’s this inherent need for one team to always play in white. I just don’t get it?

Yes, there will be colour clashes sometimes. If that happens, a team can play in their alternate white jersey – or a second uniform of whatever colour they so wish.

For example, Manchester United play in red. But in the past they’ve had blue, black, green and even pink away kits. They wear these vs sides where a clash will happen (Liverpool, Arsenal etc).

It works. Always has, always will.

And it means when there isn’t a clash (United vs Man City), both teams can wear their true colours.

How much cooler would it be to see the Canadiens vs the Bruins in their home uniforms? Or The Leafs vs the Sens?

  19. Absolutely!! And if there are teams with the same color, like Detroit and Calgary or Buffalo and Toronto, then one can wear an alternate color. The home team chooses and the away team wears a different color. They should always avoid white!!!

  20. They didn’t allow teams to wear full color jerseys against each other, but the Kings had no white jerseys, they used yellow instead (like the Lakers did in the NBA for a long time, using white as an alt instead of their home like the rest of the league). Sweden still does the same in international tournaments, wearing blue for their home jersey and yellow instead of white on the road. Until basically Nashville main their home jerseys yellow teams would use yellow exclusively as a white jersey replacement.

  21. Yes, when it works. Obviously Toronto and Tampa Bay wouldnt work, but they it it for the winter classic Toronto wore blue, and Detroit wore red.

  22. Yes. I’ve said for years I think they should not have restrictions in that white is a required jersey color. Teams should have 2 main jerseys of different colors. There doesn’t need to be a team in white. If the home team chooses a red jersey, the away team needs to pick a non red jersey. Simple as that.

  23. I think more sports should when it makes sense (similar colors, broadcast I know, and of course folks with color vision issues).

Great photo, so cool! Thanks OP!

  24. It wasn’t usual. However yellow teams (Kings and Canucks) used their yellow as their white equivalent.

  25. Teams aren’t going to pay the extra cost to haul around two sets of equipment on the road, they can afford to, but they are not going to.

When 3rd jerseys became a thing they were almost exclusively not a white uniform and it forced road teams to have to bring two sets on trips. Its the reason the NHL switched to road whites in 03.

I grew up with white at home and want it back as much as the next guy but I doubt it will happen
