The Angels' manager took a rest-of-season medical absence this summer.

Now, per MLBTR, with links, we know why.

Washington revealed to the Halos beat that he underwent quadruple bypass surgery to remove blockages from his heart valves roughly two months ago (via Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com and Sam Blum of The Athletic). The situation came together quickly, as Washington revealed he first sought medical attention after noticing swelling around his ankles while the Angels were playing in the Bronx from June 16-19. Washington said the scary situation has spurred him to quit smoking and improve his diet and sleeping habits.

Wash says he wants to come back next year. But, do the Angels, who have a team option on his contract for 2026, want a guy who will be 74 and who, even with the health improvements, has this on his medical record.

I know Wash is a baseball lifer, and wants to go out on his terms, but that might not happen.

  1. Glad he’s doing well. I don’t think the Angels should take a risk on his health. I think they should decline his option, and the Braves should bring him in the replace Sir Sitsalot

  2. Get well wash! But I agree, enjoy retirement, maybe for some light fielding coaching with a team, but live your life and cut the stress!
