Tyrese Maxey, Zach LaVine and Kelly Oubre Jr. get in 1-on-1 runs during summer workout

  1. I want to break down the defensive clips(starting from 0:30) because it shows that Maxey’s been in the gym on his defensive principles.(He made a big jump last year, and it looks like he’s gonna make another jump this year.)

First off, peep the lateral movement. He’s doing a great job keeping his feet lateral and staying engaged.

And then the upper body strength. He’s standing up right, bodying him up physically and is able to get the strip. That’s how it’s taught, move lateral, stay in front and use your hands to contest/deflect.

Showing how much he improved defensively, even when Kelly gets a step at 0:43, Maxey’s able to immediately cut him off and meet him at the apex, this has Kelly turning this into a post-up which Maxey nearly wins again(and gets a solid contest). It just goes in. But the effort is outstanding.

To put some context, check how more easily Lavine is able to get to his spot versus Oubre. He chose to opt for the fade-away instead of continuing to attack but Oubre’s rep on Lavine wasn’t as good as Maxey’s on Oubre.
