Sure would be nice if we had the Brandon bielak inning eater back with these short starts
"Not so much nibbling the corners as gobbling the batter's boxes" bahaha
Great show guys..like always
Injuries are part of the game etc but when all said and done McCullers will be arguably the worst contract in Astros history.
Somebody get on the phone with reps for Dallas Keuchel, Madison Bumgardner, Lance Lynn, Eric Fedde, Marcus Stroman, Johnny Cueto, Ryan Presley. Some of those cats have to stick on the wall as a 4/5 or a much needed LRP to the current 4/5 starters!
Try something Dana brown! It can't hurt to bring them in, especially considering the current elevator rides that are going on to the minors and back. This very much looks like a team out of options with the pitching and bullpen.
I was pretty worried there for a bit, but I have to say something about how I was looking at things. Every year players go in slumps, all of them, and they come out. What's very frustrating is when some guys are hot and other guys are in a hole, being out of sync. With the culmination of the Dodgers series, it was evident the whole time was firing on all cylinders. Then all of a sudden, the whole team went dormant at the same time. Yes, this was very concerning but looking back at it, I'd rather they all have their ups and downs at the same time. (Let me end this saying I'm speaking purely about the bats.)
Who the hell is John Mooney? Every day it's a new player, usually a pitcher, we never heard of
No, go ahead and say it: “Hader and Sousa’s over use caused them their injuries.” And, arguably they are out down the stretch when you need them to make sure we do make the playoffs not to mention the playoffs themselves. So, that mistake resulted in our need to pick up another closer. Well, Kimbrel has been available since June 7th when he was sent to the minors. Hader was hurt in early August. He should have been brought over in early July. Over using your closer is the dumbest mistake a manager can make. Kimbrel won a WS in 2018 with the Red Sox. Don’t you think he’d like to win one more before he retires? I predict Kimbrel will be the best decision the Astros have made this season, albeit, rather late.
When Walker, Diaz and anyone else in the mid-bottom of the lineup produce the Astros are really good. When those guys are horrible they can't score. With Garcia and France close to returning I think the move is to pair starters together since a few never seem to give you depth. Like have Blaubaugh for when McCullers pitches even though AJ seems like a more worthy starter at this point. Have France to relive Javier. Think this is better than throwing out every bullpen arm we have especially with how thin and struggling the pen is.
I don't think Altuve needs to play LF. He really isn't that bad at 2nd base. Last year and 2020 he was bad at 2B. Other than that he has been pretty average there including this season 0 OAA at 2nd (-6 at LF). Above average earlier in his career. DH him when Framer and Brown pitch. I wanted to see a longer look at Melton over Trammel and Hummel. I've seen enough of Melton now. Can we get a look Pedro Leon now while we are waiting for Jake to get back?
I bet you that they will start Cam in the playoffs…if they make it. That is the Astros history, keep rolling out the struggling player and say “ he is a competitor and warrior and will work through this.” I agree with Charlie, you can’t have him out there in the playoffs, much less…right now.
Ort’s walk was precipitated (yes) by the return of rain, albeit a light mist. Could’ve affected his grip
Guys. Come on. Its 1 minute into the podcast and already advertisements
Great comments & analysis …thanks guys.
Much closer to a conversation today instead of 3 soliloquies. And I love the interaction! Keep it up, guys, these go by so quickly!
I think the pitch calling by the Astros catchers for the lower starters and relief pitchers is not what it could be, especially when you compare that to our previous catchers during the run of success. Granted Framber and Hunter have such good stuff that maybe they don’t need help with pitch selection, but the others I think depend on catchers calling a good game more than we think.
I hope realignment goes to 4 eight team divisions, like hockey. 8 divisions means they will be wildly unbalanced. Scrap the concept of NL/AL. 10 games against each division opponent and one series for each of the other 24 teams.
3 different guys ……great show
I think we need a better catcher…keep diaz but find a guy like our old catcher maldy….keep the runners at bay…and catch what hes calling.
Great discussion! Great podcast!
They didn’t want to give up on the few minor league assets they currently own.
For all the reasons Charlie mentioned I didn't need hindsight to know they needed more pitching. They needed a starter and 2 relievers.
The A's are going to Las Vegas Charlie P lol
Realignment is inevitable as Charlie said. Its been said publicly its not writting on the wall at this point
You can’t sit Cam Smith. The options are crap and the kid needs to develop
