🔴LIVE 🔴Arizona Diamondbacks VS Los Angeles Dodgers /August 29/ Mlb Envivo /MLB THE SHOW 25
in no time in the second half. And if you want to be playing meaningful games at the end of September, you got to put your head down and grind for the next eight weeks. It’s the Arizona Diamondbacks taking on the Los Angeles Dodgers. All right, we’ll be back to get this one started after this. Just about set to go and the right-hander with a good curveball, Yoshobu Yamamoto. Chris, he’s got the ability to take control of a game when he’s out there. Well, incredible mound presence and he’s going to attack hitters. You look at that strikeout per nine ratio over 10 coming into this start. So, he’s a pitcher that wants the ball. He’s aggressive. He knows that he can get the swing and miss, especially when he needs it most. We’ll see how effective he is in this one. All right, ready to get underway. And now it’s the switchinning second baseman, Catel Marte. Swing and a miss. 0 and one. First pitch 710 swing and a ball ripped right field and that one back and that one is gone. [Music] The first batter of the game leaves the yard. His 24th home run of the season. The Diamondbacks score first. It’s one- nothing. Two pitches, two swings. That one for a home run. Looking to be aggressive all the way. And it paid off for him in a big way. Well, we see this so much more today. Lineups with pop in the leadoff spot. And it really puts the pitcher in a tough spot out there where he has to execute right away. You can’t just get over a couple of strikes to settle in, get comfortable, because at the plate that guy’s looking to do exactly what he just did. Start the game off with a huge bang. And now here is Heraldo Peromo fouled off. He was late. Whacked out to center field. That’s well struck. Pahes going back. Makes the catch up against the wall. Time to take a look at the Diamondbacks lineup. This has been a good, productive lineup so far this year. Currently ranking among the better teams in terms of total hits and runs per game. Well, you know, this lineup sees it as very important to put the ball in play. Boog, I mean, this is an age where strikeouts are up so high and guys are swinging and missing going for the fences. But if you can increase that contact rate, you can be a dangerous club. you get more guys on base, then all of a sudden when that big swing comes through, you’re plating more runs. So, we’ll see if this pitcher can get some soft contact. Let the defense work behind him. And that one popped in the air. Left field [Applause] makes the grab. Two down. That’s right. Batting fourth, left fielder Lordis Goreel Jr. Two down, base is empty. Now the left fielder, Lordis Goreel Jr. That misses the zone. And that’s ball one. Just missed. Two out. Base is empty. Off the mark there. And it’s 3 and 0. That’s ball four. Tried another fast ball but missed the spot. Maybe a little loss of focus on the mound right there. Pretty much gifted him first base with a quick free pass. Moreno. So a man at first. Next to hit for Arizona. Gabrielle Moreno. And there’s the strike. Guriel leads off first with two down to the inning. Outside and the count even one and one [Applause] and strike two. One ball, two strikes. Good job to fight that one off. I wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball. Try to go again with a fast ball. Slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching up. Fast ball right back to the mound. Slings to first. That’s out number three. Catel Marte with the blast for Arizona. It’s now one- nothing. You’re watching Major League Baseball exclusively on the show. Back here in LA and on the mound now, Eduardo Rodriguez. Bill, you know, this guy wants to be better than that. I mean, the ERA is bloated. He understands that he’s got to put his team in a better position to win ball games. And at this point, you have to forget about your own individual stats and you have to go out there and attack and try to get that W. And if you do that, you’ll look up and most likely that erra will have dropped over time. Justin Dean, the leadoff batter, as he looks at ball one. Let’s go. Ground ball left side to first, but it pulls him off the bag. Well, as an offense, you want to get the crowd involved right away. Get that good energy working for you. But this time, the defense does it for them. Always a great opportunity when you can get your leadoff guy on base to start the game. And it doesn’t matter how it happens. Here’s Mukie Betts now. Good defender. He’s been inconsistent offensively. Swing and that’s ripped towards right center. Carol snags it on the run. batting third. Time to check out the Dodgers lineup. This an offense, Chris, that’s having a hard time scoring runs right now. Yeah, sometimes things just aren’t going to click. And unfortunately, what happens is players press. They try to do a little bit more and they get out of their game. You got to let the game come to you. If you chase it, it’s going to run from you. So, this is a team that just needs to calm down, relax, and understand that they’re going to come out of this. Keep it going now. Snap throw to first and he just got his hand in there. This might be a steel situation, but that’s not your average catcher behind the dish. You have to be careful here. T Oscar Hernandez up to bat next. Lays off for a ball. tapped at the plate, but it’s a foul ball. [Music] And he chases that one below the zone with two strikes. May see some movement over there at first base. Trying to stay out of the double play right here. Tay Oscar goes down on strikes. Well, I’m not really sure why he let that one go by. I mean, out of the hand, it had a lot of the strike zone. Sure, it had some good armside run at the end to move to the outside part of the plate, but with two strikes, you got to be ready to swing it there, and you can’t leave it in the umpire’s hands. So, two down now. And here is Andy Pahes. And a base hit into right center field. Dean around third and he’s out. Cut down and that ends the inning. Textbook defensive execution right there. Outfielder hits the cut off man. Relay throw to the plate. A perfect strike and a great way to end the inning. [Applause] Second inning set to go. And now Bla1 Alexander clips the corner and it’s 0 and one. [Applause] And that is in there for a strike. I believe that’s the split. Patrick Johnson behind the plate. Patty Johnson to Sboo, but I’d ask permission first before I call them that. Does a pretty good job back there. Occasionally, we’ll see a couple of sideways looks from players, but that kind of comes with the territory, right? [Music] This one in the air. Hernandez hauls it in for the good hard fast ball up in the zone right there. They look really good coming in, but so hard to get on top of as a hitter. Tyler Lleier getting ready to hit Boo. I don’t think anyone was shocked when Yamamoto signed with Los Angeles. He joins a long list of pitchers who signed with the Dodgers out of Japan. Following in the footsteps of Hideo Nommo, Heroki Curota, and Kenta Mietta. One down, base is empty. There’s the strike. [Applause] [Music] He goes down looking. Two outs. Base is empty. Alec Thomas now. Swing and a miss. It’s 0 and one. Two down. Do on. He swings and fouls one off. [Music] Struck him out looking. And the Diamondbacks down in order, but they hold a one- nothing lead. Back here at Dodger Stadium, here’s Kik Hernandez. Hernandez, versatile player, can play all over the infield and the outfield. Let’s go. Rodriguez back to work in there at the knees. 0 and one. Really good cutter that he’s able to front door and back door. That pitch is devastating in the air right side. He’s got it. One away. And here is Michael Conforto. He’s done a great job making contact recently. Can make it a fivegame hitting streak with a knock in this one. Misses just off the outside edge. I think that was a strike. Edge of the zone for a strike. And a count one and one. this to third. Vargas fires to first in time. Good sinker low in the zone right there and produced exactly what he was looking for. Ball on the ground. Nice ground out. Miguel Rojas at the plate. That’s hard hit in the line. No trouble here. Puts it away for the out. And that’s the inning. Dodgers down in order. Still behind by a count of one to nothing. Back here at Chavez Ravine. And now it’s switchhitting third baseman Ilaro Vargas. Chopper right side. Flips it. It’s there and that’s a great play. Now batting second Marte. Back to the top of the lineup. An outstanding hitter in Catel Marte. He’s already homerred in this game. As a batter, he’s known for performing better in these night games. He might start two for two in this one. Hard ground ball base knock. So, a man aboard now with one away. Went up there looking to be aggressive and got something he could handle. Wasn’t able to elevate that one, but he sure hit it hard enough to get through the infield. Well, there’s not a whole lot of time for the defenders to react and try to make a play when it’s ripped like that. Stepping in is the switch hitting shortstop. Heraldo Peromo pitches in for a strike and it’s 0 and one. Peromo measures 6’2 in 205 lbs and he was born in the Dominican Republic. Marte leads off first with one away. Foul ball there. [Applause] got him swinging. That K is his third of the game. He’s really good hitting the baseball the other way. So, credit the pitcher for having him out in front of that pitch. Clearly, he had him fooled. This is Corbin Carroll. Fly to left his first time. That’s in for a strike at 95. 0 and1 kick. Sandios tap foul at the plate and that’s in the dirt. Well, with the amount of pitches that can end up in the dirt, a good secondary lead doesn’t have to get away from the catcher, but if you’re anticipating based off the trajectory, get yourself into scoring position. strike him out and a swing and a miss. He’s notched four strikeouts now. So, no runs here on a base hit, no errors, and one left. We move on to the bottom of inning number three. It’s the Diamondbacks one and the Dodgers nothing. set for the bottom of the third. And here’s the rookie catcher, Dalton rushing. Rushing. Just missed. You don’t want to get beat by a fast ball in. And he spits on that one. That’s outside. Ball two. [Applause] And that one fouled off. Just missed. Alex Freeland in the on deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. the 3-1 and a swing and a miss. [Applause] Ground ball to the right side, steps on first for the out. That’s what a good sinker is designed to do. Get a guy to roll over a little bit, hit the ball on the ground, kill some worms while you’re at it. So digging in, Alex Freeland. So, the Dodgers are going to have to try and come from behind and try and get that offense going. And a first pitch fast ball is in for a strike. Well, we call that keyholeing. Even though it’s right there and looks pretty good, if he doesn’t love it, he’s not going to swing that early in the count. One out. Base is empty. Next pitch is outside. [Music] in the air right field. Carol makes the play. Two away now. Now batting. And now here’s the Dodgers designated hitter, Justin Dean. And there’s one thing on his mind this at bat. Getting that first hit at the big league level. That just misses. Ball one. Swing and a miss as he chases that one darting out of the zone. [Music] That’s towards center. Thomas gets under it and he makes the catch and that will end the inning. And welcome back to the ballpark. John Shambi with Chris Singleton. And set to lead off the fourth, Lordis Goreel Jr. And that’s in the dirt. Ball one. Next offering is fouled back. [Music] Not even close there. And it’s two and one. fouled off and they’ll do it again. That’s foul off to the right side. Keeps the AB going. Fans another and that’s three straight strikeouts. You know, splitters aren’t thrown by a ton of pitchers, and one of the main reasons is that they’re difficult to control, and not many guys can spot them consistently where they want to, but he’s one of those exceptions. He’s found a way to corral a split and he can place it on a dime just like he did right there. Digging in, Gabrielle Moreno 0 for one. He ground it out in his first at bat. Out of the corner for a strike, 01. Well, he’s been incredibly efficient in this one. first pitch strike percentage over 70%. That’s well above league average and that’s what’s allowed him to pitch well up until this point. One down, base is empty. And a foul ball. 0 and two now. popped up foul territory behind the plate. Catcher tosses the mask, settles under it, puts it away for the out. Now batting designated hitter Bla1 Alexander. Now it’s the DH Bla1 Alexander. First time up was a pop out. Ball one there. counts one and that’s a strike and it’s one and one. Swings through the fast ball up in the zone. Man, he was really tardy on that fast ball. Great job of setting him up by throwing the curve ball. Add some velocity to it on the next pitch. Can’t catch up inside. Almost got him. Straighten him up a little bit. Spoils that one. And it remains two and two. Two down, nobody on. Top half of inning number four. misses. Three and two now. Really good take especially with two strikes. Swang and a miss. Struck him out and it’s a one, two, three inning. Nothing doing here this half. And midway in the fourth, it’s the Diamondbacks one and the Dodgers nothing. And we’re back ready to go for the last half of the inning. Here’s Betts. First pitch doesn’t find the zone. And that is out of play. And a count one and two. That one just misses. Really close pitch down around the knees there. And you could see him asking where it missed. probably doesn’t agree, but it appears he’s ready to move on to the next pitch. Two- two on the way. Chopped on the ground. Marte on the run. Throw to first on the money. Nice play. Now batting right fielder T Oscar Hernandez. And now Tay Oscar Hernandez went down on strikes his first time through. That misses the zone and that’s ball one. Check swing called strike. The guy’s going this good. He’s retired seven in a row. You got to step out of the box. Fake bunt. Do something to break it up. Got the bat going too soon. It’s strike two. Two strikes to a guy who’s already 0 for one with the punch out. the only guy in the lineup with that strikeout. But you can’t get too relaxed. You still got to make good pitches to get him out. Fights that one away. Still one and two. [Music] Let’s go. Swag on. Belted. That one is back and it is gone. He sends a rocket to left. His 22nd homer of the year. It’s 1-1. Listen to these fans. This place is absolutely buzzing right now. You can feel the energy all the way up here in our broadcast booth. He’s so good at getting his arms extended and that’s exactly what he did right there. You don’t typically want to pull a pitch in that part of the plate, but he doesn’t allow his wrist to roll over. Stays through the ball, gets the loft, and gets the home run. So, it’s all tied up thanks to the home run. Andy Pah steps to the plate for the Dodgers and the first pitch misses for ball one. One out. Base is empty and a run in. We’re here in the bottom of the fourth. Right through there for a strike. Fast ball for a strike. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. Now batting first. Here’s Kik Hernandez. Fly to right. His first time. Hard hit left side. Handles. Throws to first. That ends the inning. But we’re all tied up thanks to this solo homer. All even at one a piece. We’re back and there’s a new arm on the mound to start the fifth. Kirby Yates coming on to face a righty here and he’s been fantastic against him this year. His numbers in those matchups are very good. Tory Lavell making a move for a new bat. Pave Smith. He represents the go-ahead run. Come on. Sliced hard but fouled down the left side. Here’s the one swing and a miss as he was out front. For whatever reasons, this is a hitter that performs better in night games. We’ll see what he brings in this one. [Music] swing and a ground ball up the middle and it finds its way through for a hit and a go ahead run is on base. One of the hardest things to do in the game to stay mentally and physically ready for the big opportunity and he came through for his club right there. So up next, Alec Thomas caught looking his first time up. Fast ball for a strike. It’s 0 and one. [Applause] It’s turn two. swings through that one for strike two. Don’t play situation here. He’s been working up in the zone. Typically, you look for guys to get that ground ball. See if he adjusts on this next pitch. The O2 down on strikes looking for the second straight plate appearance. Well, I think that’s a case of overthinking right there. You got three straight fast balls looking in the 02 count just to pour it back. Next up for the Diamondbacks, Ilaro Vargas. He’s 0 for one. Fast for a strike. Smith stands at first with one out and fouled off. Strike three. And that’s two in a row. Well, interesting. He’s looking very comfortable out of the stretch after giving up the lead off single backto-back strikeouts. So, they haven’t been able to move that runner up, get him into scoring position and try to have a better chance of scoring. I tell you, good job so far on the mound. He just needs one more out. Catel Marte up to the plate. He’s already homered here in this one. Go back to Arizona. [Applause] This one lifted in the air. Left field makes the grab and that’s the third out. One left for the Diamondbacks. Score remains tied 1-1. Now pitching back now to start the bottom of the fifth and taking over on the mound, Jaylen Beaks. And as relievers go, he’s not a big strikeout guy. Tries to force weak contact. So command and execution are huge for him. The batter will be Michael Conforto. First time up, he grounded to third. with Michael Conorto. It feels like we might the weather doesn’t ease up, Chris. Yeah, the umpir and crew are going to pay attention to how the weather is impacting this game. And the moment it becomes dangerous, I think is the moment we’ll be forced to take a break. Well, on paper, it’s favorable to have a fairly quick inning here with two of the three hitters he’s set to face batting from the left side, same side he throws from. Y’all, this is a good time to step out of the box, take a deep breath, reset. Couple of change ups. Probably won’t see another one here. And it’s fouled off. They’ll do it again. Next pitch is outside. That’s a really good take. ground ball up the middle. That’s a base hit. So, he battled through a long at bat and earned himself a hit. A perfect example right there. That plate discipline, it pays off. The deeper he gets into account, the more comfortable he becomes. He usually wins the battle. Substitution now at first base. Dodgers bring in a pinch runner. Alex call. Miguel Rojas will hit next. 0 for one so far. And a strike on the outside edge. If you’re a base runner, you got to stay dialed in here. Look for anything in the dirt. Try your best to get into scoring position late that time. And it’s strike two. Doublebarreled action in the bullpen. Number 40 up and throwing for manager Tory Lavello. Curtis also getting ready. That’s off the mark. It’s a ball in two strikes. Way to lay off that pitch down. That’s down and in. Nobody out. Runner at first. [Applause] drilled in the air high and deep right field. That’s back there. Holds it in on the warning track. Now batting catcher D. So they’re making a move for a bat off the bench. Will Smith. Man, it must be nice to pull a superstar off your bench, huh? And a first pitch fast ball is in for a strike. It really feels like we might be running out of time before a rain delay is called. This rain is not letting up. Yeah. And if we do get a delay, the unfortunate thing is the clock’s going to start ticking on these pitchers and they won’t be able to keep their arms warm forever if it’s a long break and going to have to exit this game a little early. Pitch misses outside and it’s one and one. Swinging a foul out of play. missed with a change up and it’s two and two. [Applause] And down on strikes he goes. Two gone now. Up next. And up next for Los Angeles, Alex Freeland. Alex Freeland. Fast ball on the inside corner for a strike [Music] and a swing and a miss there. More and more guys are looking to slug regardless of the count and this situation will keep a close eye on his approach. And a swing and a miss. That’s the third out. Inning over. They get a leadoff single but leave him stranded. Five innings complete. All tied 1-1. Back here in LA. Top six. Now it’s the shortstop. Heraldo Peromo [Applause] Yates back to work. Fast for a strike. Highf fly ball out to left field. Call. makes the catch for the out. So digging in, Corbin Carroll for two in this one. Taken high in the draft. He’s had that top prospect labeled over him since he put on a professional uniform. But at some point that starts to go away and you’ve got to produce at the big league level. And that one missing inside a sharp slider. You can expect this hitter to be looking for something on a tee. He can get up in the air and untie this ball game. One down, base is empty and another ball. Two and0 to count. Here it comes. Just missed. I almost feel like he’s frustrated a little bit. He wants to be challenged. Lordis Goreel Jr. in the on deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. And that one fouled off four. He walked him and that’ll keep the line moving. I don’t think he really wanted to pitch to him right there anyhow. Go ahead run on base. Here’s Guriel. A strike out and a walk. [Applause] This is a great dynamic right here. Speedy runner at first, thinking about taking second. Catcher with the pop time that leaves Jaws on the floor. This might get interesting. Boo Griel gets a piece. The 1-1 on the ground to first could be two to Betts at second for one. Return throw to first. Got him. Double play and that’ll do it. So they go quietly there. Top of the order. do up in the home half of the six. All tied 1-1. Now pitching for number 40 gets the ball. Now he’s making his second appearance of the season. Justin Dean steps to the plate for the Dodgers. It’s good speed at the top of the order here. You want to get it on. See if you can get a stolen base. Maybe get around the bases and pick up a run. Rolled softly, but that goes foul. Swing and a miss as he was late that time. All right. Gets a piece and it stays 0 and two. And that skips in the dirt and foul ball. swinging a miss that one in the dirt onto first. Got him one away on the strike out. Very frustrating right there as a speedy potential base runner when with two strikes you just struggle to put the ball in play. You don’t even have to get a hit at that point. You can help your team just by reaching on an error. But some way you got to find a way to shorten up the swing and put the ball in play next time. Betts in the box now. Takes strike one. And it’s even up. Meanwhile, activity in the bullpen. Bryce Jarvis up and throwing for manager Tory Lavello. turns and fires to bets. Pitch in the dirt and it’s two and two and a swing and a miss. Beat him with a fast ball. Chance to strike out the side. Now, you talk about the benefits, the advantages of relievers who can come in and get the swing and miss, whether it’s inherited runners or maybe a little jam that they get into themselves, knowing that they can miss the bat. Tell you what, that’s huge and can change the ball game. Here’s Tayscar Hernandez. And that’s off the inside edge. One and0. trying to send this extra innings. Highfly ball and that one curling foul down the right side. [Music] And a foul ball. stays alive. Two outs. Fouls it off. Still one and two. Next offering misses down and away. Well, he might have to look for a different putaway pitch right here, too. Two. He’s already seen the curve ball a couple of times in this at bat, so might have it timed up and ready for it. and he swings and lifts one to deep center field. That’s down. One hops off the wall and he’s in at second with a two out double. Two hits for him in this one, both for extra bases. Got to feel good about that. Centerfielders in today’s game are so talented and so athletic. So when you blast one to deep center and get it to drop in, you know, you really put a great swing on it. And that was nicely done for extra bases. Now just one swing away from potentially walking this thing off. So runner at second, two intentional walk here with two out. They set up a force at any base to end the inning. Now batting first base first and second, two outs. And next for LA, Kik Hernandez. just missed. [Applause] And that one is lifted in the air back there and that one hops the wall across the winning run and the Dodgers walk it off. So exciting to see a team walk it off. Not so much fun if you’re on the other side, but what a great way to win. And this team is celebrating and this win is welld deserved. [Applause] [Applause] And your final score here today 2-1. Dave Roberts and company celebrate in the dugout for Chris Singleton and our entire crew here at MLB the show. Thanks for stopping by. I’m John Shami. Talk to you soon.
