Jonah Tong’s First Inning & Mets Put Up 5 Runs on First 5 Batters! Soto & Nimmo Homer vs. Miami

[Music] Jonah Tong grew up in Markham, Ontario. He’ll be the first Canadian to start a game on the mount for the Mets since 1962 when both Ken McKenzie and Ray Davio started games for the Mets. And now 63 years later, Jonah Tong becomes the third Canadian to start a game on the mound for the Mets. Ken McKenzie was the Yale baseball coach my freshman year and he was the only pitcher on the 62 Mets who had a winning record. Right. Five and four. Five and four. A team that went 40 and 120. Jonah Ton’s minor league numbers are just off the charts. Sorry, Gary. Yes. Just crazy. You want to look at one number? 113 and 2/3 innings pitched. Three numbers, sorry. 58 hits. That’s absurd. And strikeouts 179. And I don’t even know how mathematically you get there, but uh unbelievable numbers. Warms up to Nickelback. Burn it to the ground. Canadian band. Hyundai starting lineup for the Marlins. Conor Norby just back from the injured listeners. 41 games with a broken Ham bone. Eric Wagaman who pinch in last night plays first base. Joey Weame the former Brewer plays right field. And Jonah Tom will try and calm the butterflies. started the year in double A, was promoted to AAA, made two starts, did not allow one in either one of his AAA starts. And just like that, here he is on a big league mount in the middle of a penalt. [Applause] Xavier Edwards leads off for the Marlins. He was 0 for four last night. And Tom’s first big league pitch is a fast ball inside for ball one and we’re underway. They take that ball out of play. Send it to the authenticator. [Applause] Edwards a switch hitter much better as a left-hand batter hitting over 300 from this side of the plate. And he fouls the fast ball off one-on-one. Khan becomes the seventh Met to make his major league debut this year and the 44th pitcher to work for the Mets, one shy of a major league record. And he gets that fast in for a strike and it’s one and two. You know, a lot has been made about his stature. You look at his shoulders, you look at his legs, he might be shorter, but he is not small. He is dynamo. He’s not as wiry as Lindsey. Edwards loops one into shallow center. Tiller coming on to make the catch. And that’s the first out. From my experience, that’s the first time that you breathe as a starting pitcher on your first start in the major leagues. Right there with your first out [Music] defensively behind Tong this evening. Torren gets the privilege of catching MVentos, Lindor, Batty, and Alonszo. McNeil’s out for today’s game and Tyrone Taylor, you put your best defense right out for the youngster uh with Sodto and NMO. Here’s Jacob Marcy, a rookie whose career has gotten off to a flying start. He pops one up into shallow left center. Angling on it is NMO and he’s there to grab it. Two out. So, rookie retires rookie. Two out and nobody on. Interesting. Uh Tom wants a new ball even after an out. So any ball that’s been touched by a bat, he wants it out of play and wants a new one. First batter, he threw three fast balls and then got Edwards to fly out on a change up. Marcy flies out on a first pitch fast ball. And here’s Augustine Ramirez dhing tonight. Ramirez, the rookie catcher, pops his first pitch up and Batty on the right side of the infield. Wait for it to come down. Side retired. The quickest of innings for Jonah Ton. Six pitches. One, two, three. And that’s how his big league career begins. Mets come to bat, no score, facing a red hot Francisco Lindor who takes low and in for ball one. And there were three more hits last night. Over the last 16 games, an 1186 OPS, a 443 batting average, [Applause] pops straight up and the catcher Hicks comes back, sheds the mask and runs out of room and lands on the first row. on the starting lineup for the Mets tonight. Tyrone Taylor gets a start in center field against a right-hander. They want his defense out there behind Tom. Artentos up in the cleanup spot where he has thrived when he’s had the opportunity this year. One-on-one to Lindor with Sodto and Alonzo to follow. You don’t see too many pitchers lift their hands up over their head anymore. And because Paris is 6’8, those hands over the head make him look about 7 foot three. Andy Fletcher has the plate tonight. Tends to be a hitter’s umpire. Does not have a big strike zone. And Lindor takes a fast ball that just missed low and in at 99 mph. Used to be a phrase that you’d say that this pitcher throws peas at the knees. And that’s what you’re going to get from Perez. Three and one to Lindor with Sodto on deck and Francisco takes it low. Ball four. So Lindor on with a lead off walk. Tri-State the Chevy dealers bring you your defense. Six behind the plate now. Ramirez, Connor Norby off the IIL and back at third base. Lopez Edwards and Johnston Marcy who we saw last night. Amazing athlete. Joey Weame came over from the Milwaukee Brewers. Here’s Sodto 0 for four last night. Lindor at first, 24 steals. He takes off early. Hicks’s throw is not in time. Lindor wasting no time stealing his 25th base of the year. Now has 25 homers and 25 steals with 27 games to go. You know, it’s the Marlins who did most of the base running last night. And this is a good sign. It’s like the Mets are coming out and taking it to this young ball club. Nice aggressive play early in the game. So, runner in scoring position for Sodto who has been great lately in these spots. He has reached base safely in each of his last 11 plate appearances with a runner in scoring position. six hits in his last six at bats with a runner in scoring position. After a seasonl long drought in that area, Sodto has really come alive in RBI spots. [Applause] What is there to say? That was really good. Way to do two and one. I think as a pitching coach, you’re just trying to measure his nervousness and anxiousness and and trying to temper some of that. That’s been incredibly successful stealing this year. Lopez the shorts stop playing right next to Lindor and Sodto takes it high at 3 and one. How good can Aori Perez be? Well, in the month of July, his whip walks and hits per innings pitched was 0.64, 6’4, which for pitchers 22 and younger is the lowest whip for a calendar month in major league history. Here you go. Behind three and one to his second straight hitter and Sodto swings and misses at a high fast ball and it’s three and two. Harris came up in 2023 as a 20-year-old. Started 19 games, pitched to a 3.15 ERA. His last start that year was against the Mets in Miami. Gave up three runs in three innings. Then he hurt his elbow the next spring and underwent Tommy John surgery. Sodto drives one to deep right center field. Back goes Marcy back near the wall and it’s out of STO with his 33rd home run of the year. give the Mets a quick two nothing lead. Seven for his last seven with runners in scoring position and the Mets out quickly tonight. [Applause] Well, he got him to swing at a fast ball up the previous pitch. Another fast ball up and he clobbered it. There’s Alonzo. He takes a slider for a strike. Harris got behind both hitters, walked Lindor, and it paid for the two-run home run by Sodto. The pitch he hit was maybe about two inches lower than the pitch he swung and missed at, but basically the same location. Reminds me of the long fly ball home run he hit off Cleveland in the postseason. Almost exact pitch. Change up in the dirt and it’s one and two to Alonzo. 33 home runs, 81 RBI’s now for one. and 98 runs scored. Second in the league in runs scored. Alonzo’s having a great home stand. Eight for 17, five RBI’s in the four games, including a two-run homer last night. Fouls off 100 mph fast. You cannot throw him up at your own peril. Anything up in the zone, fence high, he just gets it soaring in the air. tremendous backspin on his baseball unlike most hitters you’ll ever see and never comes out of the air. [Music] Two and two now to Alonzo. Harris still looking for his first out and Pete fouls off a fast ball. That Mets home run means City will donate $2,000 to No Kid Hungry to help the one in five kids in America facing hunger right now. That’s only the eighth home run Paris has allowed in 15 starts this year. Came back to the big leagues in June coming back from Tommy John. Alonzo finds the hole and gets it through for a base hit. And so Pete is now 9 for 18 on the home stand. [Applause] Breaking ball down and away. Nice adjustment by Pete on that breaking ball and finds a hole. [Music] When you give up a home run earlier early in the game on a 98 mph fast ball as a young pitcher, does that dissuade you from your fast ball? It better not because it’s one of his strengths. You cannot allow the opposing team to take you off any of your pitches. If you got to play a mind game with you yourself, you can just say, “Hey, I made a mistake. They got lucky. Here we go again.” Start all over. Can’t come off a pitch because the team is taking your bridge. Well, when the Mets faced Perez two years ago in that start in Miami in September, Mark Ventos hit a home run against him. [Applause] Mark a 10-game hitting streak come to an end last night [Music] and he takes the first pitch fast ball down for ball one. You see the contact he was trying to go up another four or five in up around shoulder high that was letter high and so covered it. Perez has given up eight home runs as we mentioned. Five of the eight have come in the first inning. gets fast ball in for a strike to Ventos. And he also had a twostart span three starts ago where he gave up five home runs in two starts. Alonzo at first, still nobody out and he spits on that breaking ball and it’s two and one. Meanwhile in Philadelphia, Jurson profile an RBI single and the Braves have jumped in front of Ranger Suarez and the Phillies one- nothing. The game is now in the bottom of the third. So far, having quite an August. Suarez had been red hot coming into that start. He didn’t give up a run in the first inning tonight, but he threw 29 pitches in the first inning. And then the Braves got a run in the second. St. Louis on top of Cincinnati. Reds four games behind the Mets. The Mets five games behind the Phillies. Three and one to Vientos. And that’s inside ball four. So that’s three of the four batters. Perez fell behind three and one and he issues his second walk of the inning. If Perez has a weakness when he does get wild, he has a lot of arms side run and that’s what you’re seeing so far early in this game. Daniel Moscos, the Marlins pitching coach out to talk to his young right-hander. First four Mets have all reached base. Lenor walked, stole second. Sodto hit a two-run homer. Allonzo single. Vientos walked. So, 23 pitches deep. And in the first inning, Yuri Perez still looking for his first out. Very simple talk here by the pitching coach. It would go something like this. Um, come on, let’s throw strikes. Let’s be aggressive. Let’s get in pitchers counts. Every hitter that’s been up, you’ve been behind. This is one of those where the pitching coach Gary could give you a little kick in the you know what to get it going. We mentioned that Perez had a great month in July with that 0.64 whip. The Marlins as a team were fantastic pitching in July. They had a 2.60 staff erra which was the best in the majors in July, but it’s falling off a little in August as maybe some wear and tear kicks in. They have a 5.45 team erra in August. There’s Nemo who’s been great with runners in scoring position lately. First and second, nobody out. Norby in on the grass at third and takes a fast ball low and in for ball one. Here’s the profile we were talking about on Perez Young just a couple months older than Tom. Tommy John surgery took away a whole season plus but he’s elite swinging a miss and a fast ball. Well, with he and Edward Cabrera, who we’ll see tomorrow, and Sandy Alcantra, who’s still trying to get his act back together following Tommy John, they’ve got a pretty good threesome at top their rotation. That’s pulled toward the right field corner by NMO. And it’s out of here. Brandon NMO with a threerun homer. Number 21 for NMO. before an out is recorded. It’s 5 nothing New York. Now Brandon has been driving in runs in droves. That is eight RBI’s on this homestead. 76 for the year. And the Mets putting up a big number in the first inning. You know, we talked a little bit from the open about the sloppy play yesterday. The Mets knew they played sloppy and they’re coming out aggressive today. And Perez is helping them out by falling behind everybody. They were trying to come in and NMO was so quick inside. That ball’s on the corner and he caught it before it got in front of the plate. hit it out in front. Nemo is now seven for his last 12 with runners in scoring position. That’s a completely turn that area around this month. They struggled so badly the first four months. This month in August coming into the night, the Mets were hitting 367 as a team with runners in scoring position. And they’ve bettered that in the first inning tonight with a pair of home runs. Marte pounds one foul. There’s the grip on the home run for Seamer. He’s trying to force inside, but NMO beat him to the spot. Maybe looking in there. Who knows? You know, when teams have young pitchers, particularly ones recovering from Tommy John’s surgery, they’re very judicious about not only game pitch counts, but inning pitch counts. And you wonder after 31 pitches with no outs, how far they’re willing to push Perez in this first inning. That’s a really good comment. That’s on Clayton McCulla, their talented firstear manager. There’s some stirring around in the Marlins bullpen. Nobody’s throwing as yet, but there are some folks doing some stretching out there. 22 to Marte and he fouls away another fast ball. And the um here’s Tyler Zuber who pitched for the Mets earlier this year getting up. You can see the exasperation from Perez after that last foul ball. Yeah, he’s used to getting strikeouts with that pitch and the Mets are wearing him down. And that’s pulled towards short and it’s caught by Lopez for the first out of the inning. So Marte is retired and after 34 pitches a Yuri Perez finally has an out and a young Tong is going to have quite a wait before he goes back out there for the second inning, but he’ll take it with the five spot so far. Do you know that the Mets have never had two starting pitchers in the same season win their major league debut? Fred Batty takes a curveball for a strike. First we’ve seen of that from Perez. [Music] Batty over the last 19 games hitting 344 with a 986 OPS. Another curve. A swings over that one. So Erie Perez going to plan B. The door number three. Interesting. No jacket. Usually pitchers might throw a jacket over their sleeve, but glove on his on his thigh. One and two to Batty. Tyrone Taylor on deck. Yuri Perez just trying to get settled into this game. Mets have not allowed him to breathe in the dirt and it skips away from Hicks. Two balls, two strikes. He’s not landed a change up yet as Yori Perez made his season debut on June the 9th. He be making his 15th start tonight. He’s thrown 70 innings coming in. Slice toward left center. Marcy on the run will get there to make the catch and Batty retired two out. Get to City Field early tomorrow for the Mets block party featuring your favorite ballpark food and drinks, entertainment and games. Visit mets.com/blockparty for details. Lie Wilson with his legacy catering. You want that? Yes. I’m sure it will be scrumptious. Tyrone Teller, the eighth man in the order, is up. Tyrone’s bat has come alive. Eight hits in his last 16 at bats. They’re going to come get him. I think the manager is going to come take him out. You’re right, cuz they asked the catcher to come speak with Perez. Well, it’s all about the pitch count in the inning. 39 pitches. This is a prized pitcher that they do not want to mess with. And they’re going to pull the plug right here in the opening inning. Tyler Zuber is in to pitch for the Marlins. He is one of the 44 men to have pitched for the Mets this year. Pitched a couple innings in Philadelphia. Gave up a couple of runs from Arkansas. Darwin Taylor takes a fast ball strike and it’s 0 and2. So Aurori Perez threw 39 pitches in two/3 of an inning. gave him five runs on three hits, two walks, no strikeouts, two home runs, and he is out. Tilder takes outside. It’s the second shortest out compares his career. In his rookie season in 2023, he had a one-third of an inning outing against the Braves in which he gave up six runs. So, it could have been worse. One, two coming and Taylor takes it on the outside corner for strike three called. So Zuber comes in and gets the final out of the inning.

Jonah Tong made his presence felt right away for the New York Mets, popping out the first three batters on just six pitches. The offense wasted no time against the Miami Marlins, exploding for five runs in the first inning. Juan Soto and Brandon Nimmo launched monster home runs to give the Mets an early lead and knock out the Marlins’ starting pitcher.

  1. Not for nothing – I'm a lifelong Mets fan. I turned on the game in the 3rd inning? 12-0 Mets. Hey I want my team to win, but this is a slaughter!!!… Maybe MLB considers a "MERCY" rule?

  2. the mets are asss even they won soto is trash his washed he likes talking smack thats the only thing his stupif ass can do just cuhz yall signed him for alot of years his stupid for accepting cuhz he signed for alot of years nd shohi still making more money then sotoπŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚

  3. dammm i thought lindor was better nd he only has 4 home runs πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚his asss nd yall be saying so much bout him but has only 4 homerunsss🀣🀣🀣🀣🀣🀣his trash he will never catch ohtani

  4. thats all he does is walk cuhz he only has 4 home runssπŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚ nd yall still have them on ur tream nd his ass asfkkkkkkkk

  5. Whoa wow Great Job Pitching today. You did Awsome. I'm Dang proud of you an Mets you all played Spinourious. You guys Smoked them Nimmo 2 Homer's. Yesssss

  6. I'm glad the team is winning and now has a 5 game lead on the Reds who are in free fall. The Mets will be in the playoffs and can finish the Reds off next week in Cincy September 5-7. We're 2 GB of the 2nd Wild Card but damn it, Stearns should be put on a performance improvement plan for waiting HALF as long as he did. The Mets should've called these kids up during the FIRST 3-13 stretch in June. Instead he waited until a second 2-14 stretch ended. The Mets went 5-27 in those two cold streaks and that's what obviously cost us the division, a bye round and home field, because he ran Frankie Montas out there for 7 starts, and let Senga and Manaea both go like a month and a half without throwing a pitch in the 6th inning

  7. Throws harder than I was expecting. He’s a competitor. Should be fun watching him and McLean. Love seeing the youth make their way into the league.
