Rays vs. Nationals Game Highlights (8/29/25) | MLB Highlights

Welcome everyone to Washington DC. We have arrived in the nation’s capital for game one of three. It is the Rays against the Washington Nationals. And an opportunity tonight for Mitchell Parker. It’s not often a guy has an RA in the sixes. But a team is going to stick with him and let him make starts consistently. His last five pitching to an ERA of 12. Chandler Simpson stepping in to begin this one. Lined right back up the middle. CJ is there. elevates and picks off that line drive for out number one. As Parker works from the wine, he delivers to Junior Camro. Junior swings and misses and down he goes. Parker with a swinging strike out of Kamano. Two out, nobody on. Two out, nobody on for Yandi Diaz. And a hot shot that’s going to go through the left side out of the reach of Abrams. And Yandi is aboard with a base hit. Two out single. And here comes Lao hitting at 264 13 doubles, 26 home runs. And the pitch to Lao is sent way up into the air into right center field. Ranging back is Cruz looking up at the wall and it’s gone. Home run number 27 for Brandon Laauo. And the Rays with two outs in the first have a two nothing lead. Not that far from where he went to school at College Park at the University of Maryland. Brandon Laauo circles the bases here at Nationals Park and gives the Rays a first inning lead. It’s a double for Christopher Morell. Bring up the rookie shortstop in his sixth big league game. Carson Williams down the pitch. Swinging a miss and that’ll do it. He struck him out on three pitches. So Williams done. Second strike out for Parker and it ends the inning. Adrien Hower making the start for the Rays. They’re two and two in his starts. He worked into the seventh inning his last time out against St. Louis. So a leadoff walk for James Wood. He’s aboard. He has 15 steals in 21 tries. All right, here now is CJ Abrams. Their star shorts stop. Abs ground ball right side. That’ll get through. Wood going to stop at second. Back to back have reached for the Nats here in the first. Wood walks Abrams singles. Bell is out. Serves almost like a sacrifice as just move the runners into scoring position. So it’s second and third with one out for Luis Garcia. Climb on the right. That’ll push that one to the gap. Two runners will tag up. Wood comes in to score. Abrams to third and Luis Garcia Jr. cuts the deficit in half here in the first inning. his 55th RBI of the season. Bounced toward short, played back on by Carson Williams. Plenty of time to throw to first and retire Adams. And the Rays do maintain a lead, but they give one back. Nationals lead the tying run at third. We’re done with one in DC. Welcome back to the lineup. Denon Lyle with a leadoff single on the first pitch and a lead off base runner. Here’s a swing on a line drive base hit by Paul De Young out near the left field foul line. Cut off by Simpson trying for third and the tag by Camaro and Lyall is out. Simpson with the assist from left and Lyall’s foot was clearly in the air when Camiro tagged it. Tip of the cap to Chandler Simpson. No review. He threw out Lyall at third base. So a one out single here in the third inning. Yanni Diaz. Speaking of normal, he’s just been coming up with hits lately. Strike three called over the inside corner. And now he’ll face the man who homered against him in the first inning, Brandon Laauo. Swinging a miss. He got him on a slider off the outside. So Mitchell Parker with backto-back strikeouts. A very effective top of the third. He has four Ks. So with one out here, CJ Abrams. Abrams had a base hit. So a drive down the left field line toward the corner. This is deep. Simpson can’t get to it and it’s going to be off the wall. Carams past him as Abrams is in at second with a double. 28th double of the season for CJ Abrams. Josh Bell draws a walk. That’ll put two on base. Pickoff play on at second. And now they’re going to call a B. Wow. So the shorts stop. Williams broke in. And then the flinch by the pitcher Howser. BS runners to second and third. And strike three call. Boy, that’s exactly what Hower needed in that situation with both men in scoring possession. Now he’s got to bear down and keep them off the board. Swinging a ball line and a left over is Simpson on the run. Dives and makes the catch on his backhand to save two runs. Chandler Simpson has played a whale of a game defensively through three innings and he’s a big reason the Rays still lead 2-1 after three here in Washington. Mitchell Parker back to the bump. Another good curve ball for Parker. That breaking ball has been dancing tonight and he picks up his fifth strikeout. Carson Williams, rookie shortstop in there for the Rays with one out. Alli strikes out on a Parker fast ball. Six Ks now for Mitchell tonight. Bottom of the fourth, two-1 Rays. Don Lyle will lead off. Swing and a miss. Soft speed. Got Lyle this time. He’s down on strikes. K number two for Hower. One gone in the fourth. D Young into scoring position. And good result there for a base hit for Cruz. There’s Robert Hassel the third. Swinging a miss. He got him off speed. Strike three. And there’s the second out here in the fourth. Both on strikeouts. But now you have to face the top home run and RBI guy for the Nationals with the tying and go-ahead runs aboard. And that’s low ball four. And so the bases are loaded for CJ Abrams as Abrams for strike three according to Derek Thomas. That looked well low. Would have tied the game had it been called ball four. And a frustrating way for the bottom of the fourth to end. And we just had an ejection. Yeah, I believe it’s going to be assistant hitting coach Chris Johnson who did not agree with that call either. So the Rays hold on to the two to1 lead with a little help. And here’s Everson Pereira to lead it off. Swing fly ball right center field. Hit well towards the alley towards the big scoreboard. It keeps going and it’s gone. The first homer as a Ray for Everson Pereira and the Rays have a three to one lead in Washington. When you’re a team like the Nationals, this is the kind of year it’s been for them. You know the break doesn’t go their way and then right away the Rays get a run the lead off man. Mitchell Parker tonight ner a walk issued struck out six but the two home runs have done the damage so far. Swinging a miss. He struck him out with a curveball. So Parker fans Williams for the third time. Parker has seven Ks is able to finish off the top of the sixth. Brian Van Bell who worked two and a third Sunday against the Cardinals takes over for Hower. A two-h hit night for Cruz and a man on with one out in the sixth. Here’s number nine man Robert Hassel. A ground to short and a strike out. Pitch grounded to Yandi at first. He steps on first and has Cruz on a run down running him towards second. Williams takes a throw. Runs him back to Brandon Loud chasing him back towards second and the the tag is made. So a reverse double play. The Rays get what they needed. Sevenks for the left-hander who’s back to the mound now. Face the left-handed hitting Josh Low on one pitch. Low out to left center. tracks it down. And now we watch Miguel Cairo. Is this a one batter deal? Yep. Yes, it was. Good job for Mitchell Parker today. Second most whiffs in a game for him this year. 14. Quality start officially. Quality start in more ways than one. Rays go to the bullpen for the veteran left-hander Garrett Clevenger. Clevenger will work the bottom of the seventh inning with the Rays leading three to one. And Clevenger has been one of the top setup men in baseball. Outside ball four through a 3-1 slider and James Wood has drawn three walks tonight. Here’s CJ Abrams. Ground ball right side and through. Wood will think about going first to third. He’ll try. Throw on the way. Not in time. It’s cut off and the Nats have something brewing here. Bottom seven. Josh Bell from the right side against the lefty Clevenger. Swinging a miss. He got him with a slider as out number one here in the seventh inning. And Miguel Cairo going to go to his bench here. and Andres Chaparo for Luis Garcia Jr. Swing and a miss. He got him upstairs with a fast ball and he’s fanned backto back hitters after first and third and none out. All right, so he’s twothirds of the way there. And now it’s right-hand hitting catcher Riley Adams who’s hit it hard three times tonight. He was robbed of an extra base hit. You may remember take in called strike three. Sharp slider from Clevenger. He claps his glove because he just struck out three straight batters after first and third. None out. Nats leave two on base. The tying runs. It’s 3-1 Rays after seven. In the bottom of the eighth, Brian Baker comes on Dylan Cruz. A couple knocks in a stolen base. Cruz a hard ground ball that’ll get through the infield. Three hits for Dylan tonight. And he extends the bottom of the eighth. And so a stolen base for Cruz, his second of the game and 14th of the year. Swinging a ball lifted the other way to left center field. Struck fairly well, but playable. Simpson in the alley under it. The left fielder makes the catch and Baker works around the hit in the stolen base with two out in the eighth. PJ Puland takes over the pitching for the Nationals in the top of the ninth inning. That’s ball four. A two out walk. That’ll bring up the catcher Nick Forez who’s grounded a short fly to right center and struck out on a check swing and a base hit struck the other way and the Rays have their first hit since the fifth inning. Single to right by Fores. Bottom of the order to set things up. And here’s an opportunity for Chandler Simpson. Here’s a swing the looping fly ball out to left. gets a base hit. Rounding third and on his way home is Pereira. He’ll score and a two out rally for the Rays. Simpson with an RBI single and the Rays do get some extension. They lead four to one. Pushed across their fourth run. And now here’s Orlando Robalta to try and keep the deficit at three. Pitch swinging a ground ball to third. Diving stop. Brady House up to his feet to throw across and a one off is handled by Josh Bell for the out to retire the side. Well, we are heading into the bottom of the ninth inning here. The Rays leading the Nationals four to one. And we’ve got Pete Fairbanks on looking for his 23rd save. Ranking ball called strike three. And there’s one. Now CJ Abrams is bounced right to second. Loud to his left. He gloves. Throws to first. The Rays are an out away. And nothing would be better than to have a nice clean one, two, three for Fairbanks. The Rays haven’t retired. The nets in order yet tonight. Bell’s going to extend this ball game. singles through the right side and that’ll get one more guy to the plate. It’s going to be Brady House. Breaking ball line to right. It’s going to be a base hit down the line. Bell around second, motoring for third. House on his way to second. Brady House with a double down the right field line, giving the Nationals a puncher chance here. They’ll bring the tying run to the plate with two out in the bottom of the ninth inning. And it’ll be Riley Adams who has long ball power to the dish. Swinging a miss. He struck him out and the Rays have won it.
