🔥 Vikings Final 53 Man Roster | Biggest Takeaways, Surprises & Remaining Questions

Welcome to the One Bar and Lopeus Show. Your daily source for everything Minnesota Vikings. All right, welcome back to One Bar Lopa show. I’m One Bar with Lopagus. Vikings have a 53 for now. For now, we’re going to talk about the biggest takeaways, reactions out of this 53. Before we do that, hit that sub button. We had a ton of subs. Uh ton of viewers saddling up for the live show today. That was great. We want to know your biggest reaction, biggest takeaway in the comments. But let’s get into it. Where are we starting? Uh I think the biggest talker we have to start with is the undrafted free agent rookies who are kept. This has to be a record number. Yeah. I mean, seven. I mean, uh we know that this roster is definitely going to evolve and change. And when when that does, when we do add some receivers, possibly some cornerbacks, those will probably be the easiest ones to look at. But even so, that’s that is absolutely insane. Is that a good thing or a bad thing? Well, that’s the big question. But like we’re watching this thing unfold. We saw Zomay Von get caught or get cut and we knew um we know Huber, we knew Brosman made it. So, we’re like, okay, maybe it’s not going to be as many as we thought. So, we going horned up. We went through this drill. We came up with six guys and now it’s seven. And I guess I guess what you can fall back if you’re worried about that number is just say you got to keep the best 53 players. And if that’s an undrafted free agent rookie, so be it. Uh, that being said, I mean, some of these are a surprise. So, let me let me try to put this in a little bit. So, everybody getting their panties in a bunch like, “Oh my, oh yeah, we just suck at blah blah blah.” When you nailed it, you keep the best players. Who Who Joe Huber get a spot over? I mean, think about it. You got it over what? Henry Bird, as you call him. I’m just saying like, so it’s not like I mean, so Joe Huber gets a spot over Henry Bird and Vers Lee. All right. Okay. I mean, big deal. Austin Keys gets a job over who? I don’t know. I mean, we kept five little linebackers. Five inside lineback. I mean, so it’s like it’s not I think the tight end you go to UIC like that’s a great example. He beat out Nick Vanett and um Nesbbit. Like I mean there wasn’t that much there for him to overcome. Yeah. So like it would be one thing if we kept all these undrafted free agents and we were letting all these seasoned vets or staples go. Like that’s not the case. They’re keeping the best players available are on this roster, which is fantastic. And we’ll see how many end up keeping on the 53. Uh when they start making moves, I would assume they they release some of these guys and then they try to bring them back to the practice squad. Uh but yeah, I mean, I don’t I don’t I have any concerns about that guys for playing their ball. Exactly. Let’s give these guys some credit for, you know, getting opportunities however they may be. Maybe it was from injury. Maybe they just, you know, balled their ass off. Miles Price, I mean, he grabbed the punt returning job. Like, he’s showing some So, like, these guys earn these spots. These aren’t just given to him because they’re undrafted free agent rookies and place he wants to be known as this guru when it comes to that after the draft, but he’s good at it. They earn their spots on this team. Uh, let’s go to the next uh biggest takeaway, and that is the cornerback room. Cornerback room. A room that is very, very small right now. And again, they’re they’re obviously going to be making some moves, but we have four cornerbacks. Four cornerbacks. It’s cold in there. You got to have a lot of bodies to get that heat going in the room. Uh, and here’s the thing. You look at the Byron Murphy, Isaiah Rogers, you got Nun Mcloff there, and undrafted or not, I mean, just a guy with no experience. And Jeff Akuda, a guy who just hasn’t quite figured it out after being a third overall pick a couple years ago. That’s scary thin. But you do have Jay Ward who could play, you know, in the slot. Tiger Thomas could play some corner as well. So, you do have some help there. the safeties you cap, but face value, this cornerback group, it’s enough to make a guy have diarrhea. Yeah. I mean, uh I actually enjoy diarrhea, but like when you say like these guys can play corner, that’s not in their plan. That’s not their plan to have these guys. Their plan is they’re going to add at least one maybe up to three corners to this room. Yeah. I don’t think it’s I don’t think that’s crazy. I mean, uh, and and we’ll see if it’s a if it’s a trade, if they’re waiverwire, and I mean, there’s some guys out there that are definitely, uh, available, but they obviously know that this isn’t how it’s going to go. This is not going to be the quarterback room, but four, holy I mean, at a position so important, that’s pretty crazy. They’re taking a huge, huge risk here. It’s nuts. It’s nuts. And again, you can say, well, the front seven’s gonna be a lot better. Still, you got to have more than four cornerbacks. Yeah. And uh big Zamaya von when he was released, it was coming out like, hey, there’s teams already interested in this guy. Like, are they going to get him on the practice squad? Even practice squad style, which we’re going to do another video on. Uh there’s not a ton of their corners that that they’re really I mean to get excited about to bring back. There’s not you got to find some help here. So, Waverwire, who’s released today, Mike Hilton’s name, we came up during our live show. U Stefan Gilmore still out there. So potentially those are two names that could be brought in and that would really make this thing I would feel a lot better at those two in this group. Yeah, Mike Hilton I think he already has a visit with the with the Colts tomorrow. We will see but they’re not done there. Uh next takeaway is just the surprising players kept. There’s some players that were like what the hell he made the team. Yeah. And let’s start. I mean I just have it here. Tavier Thomas is one of my lists where I thought he was cut. uh just didn’t do much. Didn’t stand out one way or the other. He had that horrible dropped interception in a preseason game, but still makes the team. And I I that one shocked me. I I didn’t think he was going to make it. Well, and and another reason that’s surprising is they kept Austin Keys and Chaz Shamblas. Uh two guys that are going to hold down probably the special teams. And Tavier Thomas a fifth safety. He’s listed it as a safety right now. If he was kept as a cornerback, I’d be like, “All right, that makes a little more sense.” So, I think he is definitely a guy that could be on the outs if they start going to pick up a receiver or cornerback. Another guy we got on there, which is a surprise, is Tai freaking Chandler. Like, we have 1,800 running backs right now and one cornerback. Well, and here’s the thing. CJ Ham is placed injured reserve. So, he can be designated for return on Tuesday, which probably kicks one of these running. He’s gone until week four. We can designate him for return, but it doesn’t mean he can come back on the roster. No, they they designated him on Tuesday. All right. Well, either way, I don’t think Ty Sher should feel very safe about his job here. And I know they’re listed alphabetically after the starter here on the dev chart. Uh he looked like just pure cut bait, but Scott, same situation. Like I would be surprised they dropped two of these running backs and went on, you know, some more corners, whatever it may be. But yeah, definitely Tai Cher is a shock. Another one is Tim Jones, a receiver who’s uh, you know, mo is special teams and he racked up like was it two or three special teams penalties this preseason? I don’t know. I mean, a receiver I mean the Adam Thelins, the trades, the guys they might put in some Trey Palmer’s, KJ Osbourne’s like when one of those guys gets signed, I think he is Gonzo, but yes, very surprising that they did keep him. Uh just I mean let us know in the comments. But it says short-term IR is a designation that allows a team to place a player on non-seasoning injury. They have to miss a minimum of four games. So we’ll see. That was what that was what that’s a short-term IR and I believe that’s what CJ Ham is on. So uh I guess we’ll have to look at that. But uh yeah, I mean just they kept a lot of guys and and this this roster is going to do a flip-flop by Saturday. I guarantee it. Uh, last takeaway, Gabe Murphy. Yeah. Gone. Um, everybody was very surprised, including us. Um, but they I mean Chaz Shambless, they kept Bo Richter, they kept they kept a fifth middle linebacker. So, they must just really don’t see him as a guy that is going to needs to be on this team and a guy who stood out in the preseason. I think he actually had a very good overall camp. We talked to the guys undrafted, seven of them, who earned their spot. Like I feel like Gabe Murphy earned a spot on this team. I was surprised when he was let go. I thought maybe they would keep, you know, six edge rushers that which I think would keep him on this team. But uh they cut him early, too. And I don’t know if he’s going to clear waiverss or if he’s if he’s upset. But like look at last year, he was injured for most of the season, comes back this year. Uh is he a one-trick pony? Is he just going after Pat? Is he’s only do the one thing? Well, I don’t know what the story is there. Very interesting that Gabe Murphy was cut after what he showed us this preseason. Yeah, there’s a bunch of things to this is they cut him early and they could have easily kept him instead of an Austin Keys, instead of a Ty Chandler, instead of a Chaz Chamblas, and just see what happens. The fact that they just moved on from him so quick, I think I think the writing is on the wall. I think he is just I don’t I think he’s just they just don’t want him on the team. Yeah. I don’t know. I don’t know what he what he did or what he didn’t do. Uh so I don’t know. It’d be interesting if we ever find out like what the story is. Maybe like one of the beat writers will get some buzz on that and can tell us. But man, I don’t know. That one was shocking just cuz I thought he earned a spot. Well, and this just I mean this just solidifies every year. Take your preseason stats and shove them up your butt because they don’t mean anything. It comes to the practices. It comes to what they’re seeing day in and day out. They don’t care that he got a sack and a half. like it doesn’t matter. We’ve seen it time and time again and uh it is what it is. Gabe Murphy, the good part is we’re absolutely stacked at edge. So, it’s not like I you know what, I’m going to sleep fine tonight and I hope Gabe Murphy catches on and goes somewhere and tears it up. Oh, I’m sure some team will be calling. I don’t think he’ll be he won’t be uh without a team on Thursday morning. I don’t know. We’ll see. No, nobody drafted him. I mean, there’s this there’s a theme here. Like, there is definitely a theme. Nobody drafted him. We we released him last year. Nobody picked them up. So, we’ll see what happens. But, uh you know what? Next couple days are going to be fun. 1. Marathon effort today boys. Probably a bit anti-climactic because I think we all ASSUMED the pre-cut down trades were a pre-cursor for a couple of big incoming trades. Maybe we just looked past the obvious – Kwesi was grabbing some great trade value for 3 players that they were going to cut. That's fantastic.

  2. The Vikes are so well set up now with 11 picks to pounce on any opportunities that arise over the next few weeks, or even later in the season at the trade deadline. Otherwise Kwesi now has a bunch of picks to move around in the 2026 draft to target specific players that they want – a Safety to succeed Hitman, a Centre to succeed Kelly, a early pick for CB, an early pick at RB to succeed Aaron Jones. Quality not quantity.

  3. Kwesi gave most of these FA quite a bit of guaranteed money, presumably in the expectation that they would keep most of them – Okudah, Skule, Eric Wilson, Tim Jones, Tavierre Thomas. Remember Flores and KOC actively sought out these guys in FA for how they expected them to fit their gameplan and roster.

  4. Remember this time last year many fans were freaking out about – QB1 – Darnold, LG – Brandel, Centre – Bradbury, RG – Ingram, TE1 – Oliver, TE2 – Mundt, RB2 – Chandler, WR3 – Nailor, DT2 – Tillery, DT3 – Bullard, CB2 – Gilmore, CB3 – Griffin.
This year we are worried about CB4 and or CB5, and WR3 for weeks 1-3, RB3 or 4, OLB5.
Seriously – Vikes fans can be such snowflakes

  5. The thought is not Joe Huber over vershon Lee, it's rather Joe Huber over Gabe Murphy or z. Vaughn.. either way I'm not mad at it but it's much more complicated then just the room the player in when it's the bottom roster guys,, it's still a cool start tho I imagine they're gonna change it a bit more

  6. Several of these guys could wind up on the practice squad and were held on the roster until then. Ty Chandler was kept because of the CJ Ham injury and nothing more. The 3rd running back may not be on the roster yet. 3rd tight end could be addressed. The Biggest issues i see are the wide receiver room and the cornerback room. There must be answers at both those spots. I'm ok with both of the lines with maybe a couple changes in the next few days. I'm in a watch and see right now. Also i would not rule out a Theilen trade happenning soon either.

  7. We've already talked about Cobee Bryant and Mello Dotson, but Beanie Bishop, a CB the Steelers cut, had 4 picks last season and was pretty well respected, just buried on the depth chart. Center Jake Majors was released by the Bucs. You know I love Rocket Sanders, but former McCarthy teammate, RB Donovan Edwards is available. At WR Ja'Corey Brooks and Rickey White III intrigue me. Marquez Valdes-Scantling could be signed right now. Either way, this roster is now a lot younger and cheaper than we expected, and they've got a ton of pics next season, so I expect a few trades for WR and CB depth. We'll know more when the waivers get processed at noon tomorrow.

  8. I strongly think that the best talented quarterback the Vikings have is Max Brosmer. He will turn out to be a great NFL quarterback…either with us, or somewhere else…
He'll be among the greatest that ever played

  9. I’m here 1 minute after the Adam Thielen trade was announced and I’m surprised one bar and or lupagus have not posted a video yet. 😂
