🔴LIVE 🔴Miami Marlins VS New York Mets/ August 29/ Baseball Envivo/MLB THE SHOW 25

First pitch coming your way next. So almost ready to get underway. Our starter in this one, David Peterson. And Chris, he seems a lot more comfortable pitching here at home than on the road. Right. Indeed, Boo. And there can be several factors, whether it’s just sleeping in your own bed, being around your family, going to your favorite restaurant before you come to the ballpark. I don’t know what it is for him, but the numbers are clear that he’s been dominant in this place. The only frustration is you see how good he is at home and if you’re a teammate or a coach, you’re looking and saying, “Hey, if you can be almost as good as that on the road, you’re going to have a great year and we’re going to win more ball games.” Xavier Edwards, the leadoff batter, as he looks at ball one. First pitch, 710. Swinging a ground ball. A dive. He’s got it. Throws from his knees. Nicely done for the Ow. Look at how he dives right there. He’s able to pop up to both knees. Not enough time to get to his feet, but he threw a cannon across the diamond to get the runner. Otto Lopez the next up for the Marlins. Swing and a miss. 0 and one. Peterson a tall lefty. He features a sinker, a fourseamer, a slider, a change up, and he occasionally uses a curve. One out, base is empty. Swing and a highf fly ball to left. NMO puts it away for the out. And time now for the Marlins lineup. And the challenge for this lineup today, Singy finding a way to have success against the sinker ball. Yeah, it’s a tough pitch to hit, Boo. And even harder to elevate. Got to set your sights a little bit higher when you’re at the dish. They’re struggling with it. I’d expect them to make some type of adjustment. It won’t take long to see how well that sinker is working today. Jacob Marcy in the box here lets that one go for a ball. And a swing and a miss. That pitch started in and ended up on the outside edge. Just changing planes and very difficult especially for a left-handed hitter to track and he hits a ground ball right side toss to Alonzo and that will end the inning. Miami down in order now the Mets offense will go to work for the first time. No score. It’s Major League Baseball and it’s on the show. Back here with my pal Singi and on the hill in this one, Freddy Tarnick. Well, this guy’s just been filthy out there on the mound. Hitters batting under 200 against him and they’re just having a hard time squaring up anything, doing any type of damage. The only way he hurts himself is if he gives up the free passes and surrenders a rare home run. But outside of that, it’s going to be a tough job for the opposing lineup today. There’s a swing and a drive. Gone. That should put a jolt into this home crowd. His 26th of the year. It’s one- nothing. One pitch, one swing, one home run. Yeah, you could say that’s efficiency right there. Didn’t need much time in the box to make an impact. [Applause] Well, he went up there O looking to do damage. I think he had his sight set on that pitch. He went and got it and circled the bases. [Applause] Wan Sodto now another solid power season at 96. That pitch is in for a strike. Childish. Hot shot to third. Tosses to first and that’s the first out. Nice recovery after giving up the homer. Let’s take a peek at the Mets lineup here. One guy leading the way offensively for this club right now, Pete Alonzo. And he’s leading him in runs batted in this season, which tells me this guy is able to slow things down when it seems like there’s a little bit of pressure. And he’s looking at as an opportunity to do damage. You know, a lot of guys, they see runners on base and they get big. They feel like all this pressure, I’ve got to get these runs in, but somehow he seems to settle into these situations. So, watch out when he comes to the plate. Line drive to short and caught. It’s never fun going back to the dugout after hitting a line drive that finds a glove. But you will get some high fives. You know, when you make great contact, you feel like you’ve done everything right. But in this game of baseball, not everything is in your control. Fly ball down the line and in one hops the wall around first heading for two. and he’s in there standing up with a two out double. Went up there looking to be aggressive and got something he could handle. Really good swing right there. He got a pitch that he knew he could handle. Allowed himself to stay back just a tad bit longer and he hit the ball on the screws. And now it’s Mark Vientos. That one fouled off. slashed foul down the right side. That’ll hook off into the seats. 0 and two now. That one’s upstairs. Ball one. Alonso on at second with two down. Up and in. Two balls, two strikes. And a swing and a miss. Inning over. And it could have been worse. So they pick up a run on two hits. No errors and a man left. One inning in the books here. It’s the Mets one and the Marlins nothing. And welcome back to the ballpark. And stepping in the rookie left fielder, Arberto Hernandez. Peterson back to work. That one finds the zone. Go and one. Next offering is fouled back. The next offering misses. Going to count one and two. I don’t like to say he wasted a pitch. I think that was a purpose pitch. Change the eye level. Have him look up. Now go back exactly where you want to go. Now all even up and it’s fouled off. They’ll do it again. That’s to third. Bentos sends it to first. One up, one down. Fatty fifth third baseman number 33. So digging in Eric Wagaman. Swing and a miss. And that is strike one. And a foul ball. That misses the zone and it’s one and two. Next offering is outside. Still two and two after the foul ball. That wasn’t an easy pitch to hit. It’s much easier to do damage against mistakes, but that’s not what that pitch was. On the ground. Fair ball. Got to love the resiliency he showed in that at bat. Battling with two strikes. Just one of those seen eye base hits through the infield. He just kind of rolled over on it a little bit, but sometimes those can find a hole and get you a knock. One down. And now the right fielder Dane Meyers. And a first pitch fast ball is in for a strike. Tying run is at first here in the top of the second. And there’s a foul ball. Owen Chu now stays alive. And now the lefty fights that one away and the count remains 0 and2. into center. Taylor hustling after it. Hauls it in after a long run. Two lay down. Oh, those can be pretty fun as an outfielder. Got to put it into his highest gear and go a long way to track that one down. Nothing better than that. You feel like a wide receiver playing football. And the batter now, Liam Hicks. Let’s go. This one chopped on the ground but foul. Next one misses. One ball, one strike. The one-1 is fouled off. Two outs. Well struck right field. That’s back there. That one is gone and they grab the lead. It’s 2-1. Boog. His plan was to hit the ball hard and he was going to figure out the rest later. You can’t argue with those results. Looks like this guy was looking out over the plate, but he was ready to turn on the inside. Fast ball. So direct to the pitch. Absolutely blasted out of this ballpark. And now the center fielder, Derek Hill. He swings and fouls one off. And that one is lifted in the air. Taylor under it. He’s got it. And that’ll end the inning. But two come across to score in the inning courtesy of this two-run homer. And this is now a 2-1 ball game. back after this on the show. Bottom of the second, here’s Brandon NMO. Chris, it’s been a good year for him, having already set a new career high for RBI’s season. Well, after putting up a nice inning on offense, got some runs across. This is where you look for the starter to go out there, have a shutdown inning. Don’t give that other team any hope. Uh you just hope that he can get through this inning, get the bats back up there while they’re hot, man. I mean, nice job just presenting it to be better than it actually was. And a swing and a miss. Dave Lawrence assigned to work home plate in this one. Good umpire, Boo. Very fair, very consistent. Now, I did hear some feedback that he opens up the outside corner a little bit on left-handed hitters, which, you know, for me, I’d be kind of salty. So, maybe something to keep an eye on and see if that factors into this one at all. O2 fast ball way out of the zone. I think he’s trying to speed him up. Got to stay back. Off speed’s probably coming. That one outside. Ball two. [Applause] That’s hard hit on the line. Stretch is out and holds it in. Batting seven center fielder Tyrone. Tyrone Taylor up now for the Mets. He’s already set a new career best for stolen bases in a season. Chris [Applause] and that’s in there at the knees. That fast ball at the bottom of the zone can be very effective. Just got to keep it on the corners outside with a breaking ball. just missed back toback breaking pitches away. You get the feeling as a hitter that the pitcher is afraid of you, that he doesn’t want to challenge you. So, I think the confidence level is raised right here. One down, base is empty. Line drive and this might be trouble and that’s going to get into the corner. Taylor races for second. Not in time. He’s safe. He was all over that one. He really shot that one down the right field line and somehow found a way to keep it from slicing. Foul. One thing that was great about the approach, his head was down all the way through the pitch. And that’s how you do it. One out, runner at second. So up next for New York, Jeff McNeel. And that’s downstairs. And that is ball one. Swung on. Belted and that’s a foul ball. [Applause] The one-1 is fouled off. One out and a runner at second. Bottom half of inning number two. Let’s go inside. Battling here as he fouls it away on the outside corner. Got him looking. Well, even if you don’t feel great about it, you got to swing the bat with two strikes in this situation. You’ve got the tying run out there in scoring position. Just put the ball in play. Maybe something good will happen. It just didn’t look like he understood the situation. So, two down now. And here is Luis Torren right through there for a strike. Two outs and one in scoring position. Next pitch is outside. Late on that fast ball, man. He was really tardy on that fast ball. Great job of setting him up by throwing the curve ball. Add some velocity to it on the next pitch. Can’t catch up. Cut on and lifted in the air. Meyers settles under it and makes the catch and that’ll do it. Mets strand one. They’re down two to one. back here at City Field. And now, Moximo A. Costa. And that’s through there for a strike. It’s 0 and one. Up the middle. Lindor throws to first in time. Leadoff man retired here in the third. Now batting the first baseman, Xavier Edwards. Back to the top of the lineup. And up next for Miami, Xavier Edwards grounded out his first time up. It’s interesting. He plays kind of a a power spot defensively, but runs pretty well. So, when you’re looking at that position, you’re not expecting someone that has maybe above average speed, but he does. That misses and it’s one and one. And I think that skill set really upgrades the position because when you have that kind of speed, it makes the whole team that much better. Up the middle and he knocks it down. No throw. He’s in safely and now there’s a runner at first. Now batting shortstop Otto Lopez. Runner on at first with one gone. And at the plate for Miami, Otto Lopez swinging a foul out of play. What about him playing another position on defense, one that would require a little more range. Absolutely. And I think if Push came to shove where they had to make a a move during a game, it’d surprise a lot of people. You might even be able to put him in center field. Peterson checks over to first and he’s back. And that’s him for a strike. And it’s 0 and two. Well, he looks fresh out there. Just needs to get a little more confidence and remember how good he’s been in the past. Foul ball. It stays nothing and two. And there’s a ball. One ball, two strikes. Swing and a high-fly ball right field. Marte moves under it, squeezes it, and there’s two down. Now batting number 87. And next is the designated hitter Jacob Marcy. Grounded out his first time. New York. And that drops in for a strike. Edwards the runner at first with two gone. Just missed. swing at a highf fly ball that’s out to center and that’ll do it. One left for Miami, but they still lead it two to one. Back here in Queens as we go to the last of the third. Here’s the Mets leadoff man, Francisco Lindor. And that misses ball one. Nasty back door slider. There’s really nothing you can do with that if you swing at it. So that’s a good take by him. Here’s a 1-1, but a short stop. Takes a ball that misses. Three and one. Sliced hard but foul. Foul. We’ll see another payoff pitch. And they’ll do it again. That one misses. So a lead off walk. What a battle. It’s not always easy laying off a 3-2 pitch. And I tell you what, he earned that walk. And now it’s Juan Stoodto 0 for one. He ground it out in his first at bat. You have to be careful throwing and breaking pitches even in an O count. He loves going after the off speed stuff and he’s really good at hitting it. Tarnick throws over tag and they got him. Lindor picked off. Unless you’re really thinking about stealing second base, you should not get picked off by a right-handed pitcher right there. [Applause] and fouled off. Fought off. Foul and ball one. Got him. That K is his third of the game. Well, that’ll make you smile out there on the mound or maybe pump out your chest a little bit farther. That’s about as good of a back door curve ball as you’ll ever see. Right on the black and not surprisingly just locked him up in the box. Marte stands in now and watches strike one. Looked pretty good as far as being in the strike zone, but I’m sure as a hitter not too good with where it was located. very top of the strike zone. Middle away. Gets it to first. That’s out number three. Mets go down quickly and they trail it here. Two to one. And we’re back. John Shambi with Chris Singleton. And set to lead off the fourth, Arberto Hernandez. York. [Music] And the first offering a fast ball for a strike. Hernandez in his rookie season, 25 years old. He joined the team as a free agent. Next offering is in for a strike. Well, he didn’t like those first two pitches. is now in an 02 hole. He’s going to have to battle. Hope he gets a mistake. Inside and that’s ball two. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. Boi just ran out of patience there. He took a couple of pitches to even that count up at two balls and two strikes, but that time chased outside the zone. And now for the Marlins, Eric Wagaban. And that’s in there for strike one. Oh, he’s looking great so far. It helps when over 80% of your first pitches are strikes. He might be able to go the distance if he keeps this up. And that is out of play. One down. Base is empty. And that one missing inside. A sharp slider. grips one to right and that’s just foul. Bases empty, one away. Top half of inning number four. Strike three and that’s two in a row. He’s really good hitting the baseball the other way. So, credit the pitcher for having him out in front of that pitch. Clearly, he had him fooled. Now it’s the right fielder Dane Meyers. York. Fast ball is outside. Foul ball there. That one down the line and foul ball. Two out. Space is empty. New York. Grounds one to short. Lindor on to first and it’s a one, two, three inning. Nothing doing for the Marlins as they’re unable to add to their 2-1 lead. And welcome back to the ballpark. Here’s a big power threat. Pete Alonzo. Alonsozo. Since debuting in 2019, no player in the majors has hit more homers than Pete Alonzo. Ball one there. [Music] popped up to the left into foul ground. Has room and he makes the catch. Up next for the Mets, third base. [Music] And stepping in for New York, Mark Vientos. He was a strikeout victim his first time. Yeah, that’s fouled off. [Music] And that one hammered back there out of here. He flexes his power with that swing. That’s his 50th career homer. And it ties it up. It’s 2-2. [Applause] Always scary for a pitcher when a guy can take a fast ball down the middle and hit it to the opposite field. No holes in a swing like that. And that time that ball was hit hard. Here’s the left fielder, Brandon NMO. 0 for one so far. That one missed. A dive. Nice stop. Throw to first. And that’s a great play for the out. Now batting center Tyrone. That was an impressive diving stop. Singy, let’s dive into the numbers. Statcast. Yeah, Boo. A really good effort just to get his glove to the ball. He found a way to do it and just produce a strong throw as well. So that right there is a great play all the way around. Just really smooth. And stepping in is the speedy Tyrone Taylor. Fouled off left side. Two down, nobody on. We’re here in the bottom of the fourth. And that is downstairs. And one and one. And that one fouled off. Two down. Nobody on. Fouls it off. Still one and two. That was the emergency hack right there. And the one two misses to even the count. outside. [Applause] Swing and a miss. Struck him out. Make it four strikeouts for him on the bump today. But we’re all tied up thanks to this solo homer. And we’re deadlocked now at two apiece. We go to the top of the fifth and here’s the catcher Liam Hicks. Peterson back to work and immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter. You know, these Marlins, as this game goes on, have to be more disciplined at the plate. They’ve been chasing pitches outside the zone all game and it’s led to some frustrating moments. They’ve been fooled quite a bit today. Way outside and the count two and one. Next offering is fouled back. That’s inside. It’s a lead off walk and that’s the go-ahead run. Go ahead run on base. And up next for Miami, Derek Hill 0 for one with a fly out to center. And a first pitch fast ball is in for a strike. On the ground to second might be two. The throw to second is offline. Well, this offense just got a major gift. Probably should have been a double play, but it all starts with a good feed to second. And right there, everything broke down on the throw. We’ll see if they can capitalize on this. First and second, no outs. Now it’s the second baseman, Moximo A. Costa. He’s 0 for one. Puts a bunt down. Vientos one away here in the fifth. That’s a good piece of hitting right there. The job was to move the runner up and give your team a chance to score the go-ahead run. That’s exactly what happened. So, you better believe your teammates are happy with you after that at bat. Xavier Edwards gets a chance to hit here. Golden opportunity right here. York. Off the mark there. One and0. Meanwhile, activity in the bullpen. Klay Holmes up and throwing. Helley warming up as well. That’s to third. Vientos throw to first in time. Well, there’s a lot riding on that at bat right there. Nice job of the pitcher to bear down, make the pitch, get the ground ball. Excellent piece of work. And now the short stop, Otto Lopez. He’s been such a good hitter with runners in scoring position. Some guys just take it to another level. For him right now at the plate, it’s like everyone else is in slow motion and he’s in full speed. Hard grounder into the outfield for a knock. One runs in, another comes in to score and they lead by two. Well, there you go. The RBI machine. Another clutch runscoring at bat. Yeah, he’s been so good in these situations. Call it clutch if you want, but his resume speaks for itself. Digging in, Jacob Marcy bowl for two in this one. There’s the strike. Lopez off of first with two away. just off the inside edge high in the air out to right. Marte moves under it, makes the catch and that is that. But two runs for him and they jump ahead. Home half of the fifth coming up. It’s the Marlins four and the Mets two. Bottom of the inning. Jeff McNeel stands in. Jeff McNeel that misses the zone and it’s one and0. Well, these Mets simply put are producing a lot of quality swings. They’ve been lining the ball all over the ballpark and unfortunately sometimes it’s right into a glove, but still they’ve hit nine line drives so far and that’s something they should feel very good about. That one a little bit high and it’s 3 and 0. Speaking of those line drives, you can’t get too discouraged when they don’t drop in for you. It’s important to remember that you pretty much did everything right and that’s just baseball sometimes. That one finds the corner. Strike one. That one pulled foul. He’s getting the barrel to the ball. Just got to work on that timing a little bit. Lays out, but he can’t squeeze it. Still able to get it there in time. And they get it out on the play. Great job by the second base right there. Quick reaction to dive. Knock that ball down. And big leaguers just don’t panic. not the good ones. He gets up, makes the play, really good throw over to first base. That’s the kind of composure that you want to see from a guy in that position. And now the catcher comes up to him. Luis Torren flyed to right his first time. And that one fouled off. Well, I think the key I mean if he can get through one more inning, anything after that, a hitter or two is bonus, but they should be lined up good enough to get to the finish line. New York. One down, base is empty and a foul ball. misses outside and that’s ball one. The only adjustment he needs to make is his target. If you aim at the outside corner, that slider’s going to end up way off the plate. Perhaps look a little more down the middle and you get it right where you want it. Next pitch misses. Two and two. on the ground right side to first man for the fifth inning moving along. Two quick outs. Up next for the Mets. The short stop Francisco. So the lineup flips over and next for the Mets, Francisco Lindor. He’s already homered here in this one. Swinging a drive deep right field. That one back there. That’s a bomb. Another homer. His second home run of the game. It’s 4-3. He absolutely feasts on right-handed pitching and devours that one for a homer. And you can see that’s what he expects of himself. At bat after at bat, he’s that confident. High velocity up and in is just such a difficult location for the hitter. But this time he pulls the hands tight to the body, gets through this pitch. What conviction in that swing. Awesome job at the plate. Two down, base is empty. So now here’s the Mets DH. Juan Stoodto that clips the inside corner for a strike and that skips in the dirt. Miami’s bullpen with some action. Ryan Gusto appears to be getting ready and I’m sure he’s feeling some nerves. This would be his major league debut. Martinez getting loose as well. Two outs. Smoked on the ground to second. On to first. Inning over, but not before they answer back with a solo home run. It’s now a 43 ball game. You’re dialed into the show. We’re back and they make a change to start the six. The new pitcher, Klay Holmes. He’s pitching on two days rest. Here’s the cleanup hitter for Miami, Arberto Hernandez. Hernandez. First pitch misses. And a breaking ball drops in for a strike. is a one-1. And that one missing low. You got two balls, one strike. Fouls one off. Two and two. That one to first and he handles it himself for the out. Now batting number 33. Here’s the third baseman, Eric Wagaman. One for two. And there’s the strike stirring in the bullpen for the Mets. Brooksley getting loose out there. Base is empty, one away. And we’re the top half of the sixth. Swing. And this one’s bounced on the ground. Lindor fires over to first. Two up, two down. Now batting rightielder Dane Meyers. Two out. Space is empty. And now the right fielder Dane Meyers. Let’s go. [Music] Ground ball up the middle. That’s a base hit. Joey gets on base and keeps it going. Now batting. Here’s the catcher, Liam Hicks. And he’s already left his mark on this game. He certainly has, Boo. A two-run shot in the second inning, and that made an early impact on this game in a big way. Outside low, ball one. Meyers leads off first with two down to the inning. There’s the strike. 95 of that one. There’s the strike. Two outs outside with a breaking ball. Sharp grounder. That’s through for a base hit. So that’s two straight two out hits. Love how he let that ball travel, trusted his hands. Nice job of going the other way. First and second, two outs. Here’s the center fielder, Derek Hill. That’s in for a strike. First and second, two down. that crosses the plate and now they’re just one strike away from getting out of this mess. [Applause] Close one. Doesn’t get the call and the count is one and two. That’s down and in. Got him. Dave Lawrence rings him up. A lot of adrenaline. We can see it right there. And sometimes you just got to let it out. That’s an outstanding job of taking that, executing, and getting out of a tough inning. Back now for the bottom of the sixth and there’s a new pitcher on the mound, Ryan Gusto. Still a lot of game left and this game could go either way. So this is a big opportunity for him to get some important outs and try to help carry this lead into the later innings. 345 do up for the home team. Here’s Starling Marte. That’s in there. Strike one. And that drops in for a strike. Activity in the bullpen. Lake backer getting ready to go. Gibson, a left-hander, also throwing. [Applause] This guy at the dish excels in two strike counts. Got to be careful with him out there on the mound. line drive and there’s one down now batting first base. Here’s Pete Alonso. Not even close there. And that’s ball one. Fast ball is outside. He’s clearly trying to work him away here. Both pitches off the plate. If you really want to put the ball in play, you’re going to have to stay back and drive it to the opposite field. And a foul ball. Next offering is in for a strike. Home team down a run here in the bottom of the sixth. The 22 now. And that’s downstairs and outside. [Applause] And that is ball four. I don’t think he really wanted to pitch to him right there anyhow. batting man at first with one gone. And now Mark Vientos, he’s already homered in this game. Can’t help. [Applause] Swing and a tapper that rolls foul. One-run game. One out, one on. And there’s a ball. Was a good pitch there. Really had some run and finished little up and end just on the edge. And that’s one of those if you swing at it, you had a broken bat as you jog back to the dugout. [Applause] Next offering misses down and away on this count. runner. Not known for his speed, but I think you got to put him in motion. Try to avoid a double play here. Boo. Double play ball to second. There’s one. Throw pulls him off the bag and he’s saved. Well, they had the chance of turning two right there, but I don’t think he got a good grip on the ball as he tried to transfer from glove to throwing hand. They say you can’t assume a double play. I beg to differ at the big league level, but it’s going to be ruled as a fieldielder’s choice. So, up next for New York, Brandon NMO and ball one. Well, with the tying run at first base, he’s looking for something he can get a lot of barrel on. Drive it into a gap and score that run from first base. on the inside corner for a strike. That’s outside and it’s two and one. That misses off the outside edge. Tyrone Taylor in the on deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. Next offering finds the zone and the count is full. Great RBI spot here. Just got to stay focused on the pitch. The runner will be in motion so something in the gap should definitely score him. Got him. And that will end the inning. Mets leave one. Score holds at 4-3. New inning getting started. And at the plate for Miami, Moximo Aosta, Moximo A. Costa. Holmes, a righty that throws with power. 31 years old and he was a ninthround draft pick back in 2011. The 01 and a big swing and a miss outside low now. One and two. And that one is inside. him down. Back to the mound. He’s got it. The throw to first. That’s the first out in the top of the seventh. Now batting the first base, Xavier Edwards. Now it’s the Marlins leadoff hitter, Xavier Edwards. swing and a chopper out to short and that squirts through. And now for the Marlins, Otto Lopez. That’s off the mark. One and0. Let’s go. The other way and that’s a fair ball. Lead runner touches second, headed for third. Headed for the plate. He’ll score. Well, a swing like that can help you come out of the struggle. We saw the numbers coming into the ball game, but all he’s trying to do at this point is help his team win. Jacob Marcy the next to hit. 0 for three in this one. And that’s pushed foul off to the left and out of play. pickoff moved to second and he’s back in on a dive. One out and a runner at second here in the top half of inning number seven. And that’s outside and the count is one and one. Swing and a miss. And that’s strike two. Good late sink on that fast ball out of the hand. Looks so good. And then by the time he gets in the hitting zone, hard to get the barrel to it. Squirts away a little bit. and he grounds one to the right side. Alonso, the flip to the pitcher covering two away. Now batting left Hernandez. And next will be the cleanup hitter, Arberto Hernandez. 0 for three with two ground outs and a strikeout. And this is a big opportunity for him to pick up his teammate right here. That clips a corner. Lopez on third with two out. Lined into left center. Base hit. Runner from third comes across and they take a threerun lead. Now the tag at second and he’s out trying for two. That ends the inning and they limit the damage. So two runs, three hits, no errors, no one left. Seventh inning stretch time. It’s the Marlin six and the Mets three. We’re back in a new pitcher here to start the bottom of the seventh. Lake Backer coming on to face a righty here. And he’s been fantastic against him this year. His numbers in those matchups are very good. Tyrone Taylor getting ready to hit. That one finds the zone. That’s strike one. [Music] cut on and missed 96 of that fast ball. It might be time to choke up a little bit. Get that front foot down early. Maybe even just spread out. He’s really late right now. Sets him down on strikes. That was pretty nasty. Yeah, that’s a tough pitch to stay on. You don’t want to get beat inside. And as you see that pitch continue to run away from you, by the time it’s in the catcher’s mid, you think it’s a ball off the plate away. And now here’s Jeff McNeel at 96. That pitch is in for a strike. That one lifted to left. Hernandez on his way over. Nice grab on the run. And there’s two down. That’s just a really nice catch on the run right there. He saved extra bases for sure. If the pitcher’s his friend, he’ll give him a second to catch his breath before he’s ready to deal the next pitch. York. Torren in the box with two gone and takes a look at a called strike. Cut on and miss. struck him out and a nice inning of work there as he sets him down. One, two, three. So they make short work of him there. Eighth inning coming up, it’s the Marlins six and the Mets three. Welcome back. And a new arm on the mound to start the eighth. Ryan Hellley. Pretty tight game, so they’re looking for quality pitches out of him right here. Got to do his best to keep the score right where it is. And at the plate for Miami, Eric Wagaman, one for three. And first offering is fouled off. Let’s go. All right. That one pushed foul. 0 and two now. Swings and miss has struck him out. [Applause] Dane Meyers digs in now. And a first pitch fast ball is in for a strike. Action in the Mets bullpen. Tyler Rogers up and loosening in the pen. The lefty warming up as well. York swings through that man. 91 on the slider right there. That’s a hard one. That’s a low-end fast ball for some pitchers. Base is empty. One away. And we’re in the top of the eighth. And now one and two. And that’s in the dirt. You got this. Comes up empty as he chases that one in the dirt. Ten gathers, throws to first in time for the second out. Good job to clean it up after the drop third strike. Chance to strike out the side. Now you talk about the benefits, the advantages of relievers who can come in and get the swing and miss, whether it’s inherited runners or maybe a little jam that they get into themselves knowing that they can miss the bat. Tell you what, that’s huge and can change the ball game. Now, here is Liam Hicks. right through there for a strike. Well, he had a pretty good look at that pitch and not sure exactly what tied him up there. Couldn’t pull the trigger and perhaps the best pitch he’ll see in this at bat to hit. And misses inside. That was absolute gas. Triple digits on the gun. It’s just a different experience as a hitter watching that go by. Just missed. Draws the walk there. Oh, that’s a really good take right there. And that’s just mentally prepared knowing that if it’s not on a TE, you’re going to take that pitch because you still have one more strike to work with. Not easy to lay off, but he did an excellent job in that plate appearance. And that one is lifted in the air. Taylor moving under it. Come on, baby. Come on. He makes the grab and that is that. Marlins leave one, but they still lead it 6-3. Ready for the bottom of the eighth. Francisco Lindor comes up to the plate. The Mets in striking distance but have some work to do. Boo. It starts with the laid-off man. I need a good at bat out of him right here. That’s down and in. A slider missed. Action in the pen down there. Ronnie Enriquez, a right-hander with big strikeout stuff, is getting it fired up. Fouled off. He was late. Got to keep things airtight defensively right here. On your toes, ready to make a play. Hey, if you can get this to the ninth with a three-run lead, it should be a W. And that’s way high. Two and one. That one fouled off. Spoils that one. And it remains two and two. had a breaking ball. Misses outside. Fouled off again and it remains three and two. Well, he’s having a tough time getting a pitch by him. As a hitter, you feel pretty confident that you’re seeing different pitches still able to make some type of contact. left field. Hernandez pulls it in for the out. And there’s one down. Now batting the hitter. Here’s oneto. And first offering is fouled off. The Mets trailing by three near the bottom half of the eighth inning. Next offering is in for a strike. Foul ball left side. He’ll see another. Cuts and misses. It’s a strike out. Well, that split caught a lot of the zone. Definitely a hitable pitch, but coming off the fast ball the pitch before, it’s kind of tough to recognize. You notice there’s something different about it. He threw it with the same arm action, same release point, and he left it up, but the movement and the change of speeds, that was enough to do the job. Marte in the box now. No balls in a strike. Foul ball. Next offering is in the dirt and down on strikes he goes. And good work there as he gets a one, two, three. Nothing doing for the Mets and can’t cut into that 6-3 deficit. Now here’s Tyler Rogers out of the pen. He doesn’t get a lot of strikeouts compared to other relievers, so he relies on getting that soft contact and the defense doing work behind him. They’ll have to be on their toes with him on the ball. Rogers. And now for the Marlins, Moximo A. Costa. Moximo Aosta. swing and a miss. Meanwhile, activity in the bullpen. A right-hander is up and throwing. Fly ball pretty well struck right field. Marte drop step going back. leaping and he makes the grab. Outstanding catch right there and I love the commitment that he showed. He knew that the wall was close but was determined to make that catch and a nice calculation of just how much room he had to try to minimize that contact. Edwards in the box with one away as he takes ball one. Rogers is what you’re looking for in a good reliever. The ball stays in the ballpark. It’s so hard to square him up. The one swinging a foul straight back. Yeah, he stays out of the middle and and pitches either at the bottom, at the top, on the edges. And because of that, if you do get it in the air, it’s usually just a high-fly ball. And when it’s down in the zone, it’s on the ground. Bunting. And it’s right in front of the plate. He’s safe on with a blunt single. He’s so consistent that the manager basically could look at it like he’s got three outs sitting in his pocket that shortens the game. When he takes the mound, you feel like, hey, this inning is wrapped or this ball game is over. He’s just that good. And you can see it in opposing hitters as well. So, up next, Otto Lopez. That one fouled hard the other way. the 01 and it’s fouled away. They know when he comes in pretty much forget about it. Kind of reminds me of Mariano Rivera. Hit on the ground. Might be two. Alonso to second. Back to first. Double play. And that’s it for the inning. No runs, one hit, no errors, and no one left. onto the bottom of inning number nine. 456 coming up. It’s the Marlins six and the Mets three. We’re back and on the mound is the closer Ronnie Enriquez and he’s been really shutting down hitters from the right side of the plate this year. Not a lot of hard contact, not a lot of hits period. And now it’s the polar bear Pete Alonzo. That clips the corner. Ball one there. And that one a little below the knees at a count. Two on one. And it’s strike two. Now a screamer into the outfield. Hill brings it in with a nice running grab. Wow. He looked like he was running before the ball was hit. Didn’t have much time as that was a hard hit liner, but a nice job of covering a lot of ground in a short amount of time. Vientos batting with one down takes a strike. The Marlins trying to close out a three-run lead here in the last half of inning number nine. Just amazing to me how many closers and backend relievers just throw absolute gas these days. I never had a chance. Swings through that one. It’s a strikeout. That’s tough. You see it well. I mean, that was clearly up and out of the strike zone, but that’s one of the hardest things. But when you see a pitch out of the hand at eye level, that discipline to remember, I can’t hit that pitch. If I can see it really well at eye level, I can’t catch up to that pitch when a pitcher’s got this kind of velocity. NMO stands in with two away as he takes a ball. Fought off foul. Two down, nobody on. We’re in the last half of the ninth inning. That misses the zone. Two and one. Hit hard on the ground to short onto first. Ball game. Well, this was a tightly played game. Got a little of everything. Some timely hitting, runs on the board, key pitching, and defense in certain spots. Definitely a fun one to watch. 6-3 our final score for Chris Singleton and our entire outstanding crew here at MLB the show. I’m John Shami saying so long
