We are tipping off a week’s worth of shows and I am excited because we got a lot to talk about after Joe Dumar went on the Saints broadcast and talked a good bit about the team and Zion Williamson. We’re going to look at that and if he can get through to Zion more than any trade or anything, that’s the most important thing that Joe Dumars can do. We’re going to look at the playerled workouts of why that’s actually very important for this New Orleans Pelicans team. Then we’re going to look at Afro Basket and the America Cup where both Mi and Jose Alvarado are playing and doing really well for their national team. That was pretty cool during the Saints game. That was unexpected. I didn’t even know that was coming. That That was awesome to see. So, let’s get into this one. Joe Dumar’s on Zion Williamson. We’ll talk more about some of his other comments sporadically throughout the week here, but I want to focus on this one. Joe Dumar’s challenging Zion Williamson. Joe Dumar started off his interview on the broadcast by saying, “Look, every player that I talked to, I asked them, “Do you want to be here? Do you want to be in New Orleans? Do you want to be with this team?” And he went on to say that Zion Williamson said, “Yes, this is home.” Look, that’s a really encouraging sign. There were, you know, early on in his tenure here, it definitely seemed like Zion did not want to be in New Orleans. I do think from what I understand talking with everyone um that they they’ve seen that really kind of change over the past couple of years which is great. The fact that he is embracing this, wants to be here is a really important thing and I’m excited about that. That he is he, you know, that he is kind of bought in at least with that side of things that he wants to be in New Orleans, isn’t trying to like angle and go somewhere else. That’s a disaster when it comes to all of that, right? You know, but Joe Dumar’s also said, you know, we have been challenging him like you can’t keep doing the same things that you’ve done in the past and expect something different. End quote here. Yes. Right. Like Zion does not show up to training camp, you know, the beginning of the season, preseason in shape. That has to change. The approach that Zion has taken, while it has improved from his first or second or third year in the league, it’s year seven, right? This is now no longer the time where you can say like, “Oh, I’m young. I’m still figuring it out.” Now is the time where it’s got to be a thing. Look, LeBron James wasn’t spending all the money and taking care of his body like he does now. his first couple years in the league. That takes a little bit to try and figure out and learn what to do. But a certain, you know, at a certain point he did and that’s kind of been it going forward, right? This is going to be your seven for Zion Williamson. You’ve had six years to figure out what works, what doesn’t. There’s no more excuses when it comes to Zion Williamson. It’s either going to happen or not. The fact that Joe Dumar is kind of challenging him more. They’re giving him more ownership, accountability in a sense than maybe there has been in the past. Look, it’s encouraging. They’re not trading him. So, we’re going to do this whole dance again and we’ll we’ll see what happens. And, you know, I’m repeating the same type of conversation show that I’ve done years in the past, right? We do this every single year. We’ll see if 7 is different. Whatever Zion.0, you know, 1 2 3 4 5.0, whatever we’re on right now. Let’s see how different things are this year. You know, Zion did look like a different player when he was healthy last year when he came back from the hamstring injury. You could see he was physically in shape. You could also see that he was trying on defense more than he had ever tried before. You know, the run that he had in the 30 games, especially post injury, were different than it had ever been. And if you look at him on a per 36-inute basis, 31 points in 36 per 36 minutes, that’s the highest of his career. Those numbers are exceptionally good. 9.1 rebounds. That is by far the highest of his career per 36 minutes. Almost seven assists per game, 6.7. That is also by far the highest of his career. Steals were the highest. Blocks were the highest. All of them were up there, right? The numbers were really good. 10 free throw attempts per 36 minutes, the highest of his career. If you can get Zion Williamson to be that guy over the course of a season, nothing else Joe Dumar’s does will matter. You can hate the Derk Queen trade. You can not like the Jeremiah Fierce pick. You could not like them signing Cavon Ludy or whatever he will do in the future. If you get Zion to be 319 and seven per game, per 36 minutes, something like that, that’s how this team competes. Everything else is just details, noise, whatever you want to say it. If you get Zion bought in like this and doing that, the whole trajectory of this franchise completely completely changes. You know, Joe Dumar’s also said on the broadcast, not that he wouldn’t say this, Zion is in really good shape. Now, we we’ve heard that in the past with everything, right? But, you know, he’s in really good shape. And I liked what he said about they’re going to keep pushing him. There’s not going to be a sense of complacency around Joe Dumar and Zion Williamson. And to Zion’s credit, according to Joe Dumar’s said, quote, “He stepped up to the challenge and we’re gonna keep pushing him.” I absolutely love that. Right. You know, if he’s stepping up and doing the things that he needs to do, that’s what you need to see from Zion Williamson. That is what you’re looking for here from Zion Williamson. And that’s the point where things can actually change for New Orleans. Derek Quinn, who cares if Zion is averaging 30 points per game. That’s how this team competes. This is how the team, you know, is competitive next season and years into the future. It’s going to be behind Zion Williamson. The other guys can grow into that. I definitely think Jeremiah Fears, Derek Queen can grow into being really, really good players. But Zion Williamson is truly something special when he’s playing his best and out there on the court. The problem has been he has done himself no favors for being able to be out there on the court and playing his best. And there’s been so much noise around him that is his own cause, right, that now I think finally maybe you’ve got the type of front office executive to figure out like what buttons to push like how do you get Zion Williamson to be Zion Williamson Joe, you know, David Griffin tried a variety of different things, playing piano for him or like a keyboard, right? you know, trying to connect with him in other ways, trying to take the pressure off of Zion Weeps by saying it was Drew Holidayiday’s team or other people’s teams, right? But now it’s Zion’s team. And maybe that’s what he was looking for. That’s what it takes to kind of be the leader of this franchise is being empowered to do so when maybe he wasn’t being empowered to do so previously. Doesn’t mean that he shouldn’t take the off season seriously. doesn’t mean that he shouldn’t, you know, try on defense or any of those things. It’s not to make excuses for Zion Williamson here, but from what we heard Joe Dumar saying, you know, people I’ve talked to with the team have all echoed this, right? It’s it’s looking really good and trending in the right direction. And Joe Dumar’s, you know, was ready to trade Zion if Zion didn’t give him the, you know, the the proper answers, I’m guessing, here. And it sounds like Zion Williamson did. Not that Zion Williamson wouldn’t give the proper answers. If Joe Dumar comes to you and says, “Do you want to be here?” Every player is going to be like, “Yeah, I want to be here.” Even if they don’t actually want to be here. So, I’m not putting too much stock into all of that, right? Like, that doesn’t move me a ton that, you know, Joe Dumar was like, “Tell me and then if not, I’ll trade you.” That’s not exactly how this works and that’s not a good thing in the first place. But overall, it does seem like Zion Williams and Joe Dumar are kind of hitting it off in the correct way. You saw Zion at summer league around the team when he hasn’t done that every single year. All of that is highly, highly encouraging. What’s also highly encouraging, and it’s something that Joe Dumar had said about this team right now, is that they had a playerdriven kind of mini training camp out in California. Let’s break down why that’s so important. That’s coming up here next in today’s episode of Locked On Pelicans. Today’s episode of Locked On Pelicans is brought to you by FanDuel. It’s going to kind of be the focus of the whole week here. So, make sure you participate in the lockdown Pelicans fan survey. We have a couple hundred responses already, which is pretty awesome. Really good data. It’s going to be really interesting to look at all of this. For your second listen, by the way, locked on Saints, no more preseason. who’s going to be the starter at the QB position on opening day. Ross Jackson’s going to give you his prediction among other things. Go make lockdown Saints your second listen today. So, let’s shift gears from kind of the front office talk to what’s happening on the court or more more accurately what’s happening off the court right now. Joe Dumar’s kind of gave the insight that last week Pelicans players got together for voluntary player-led workouts. This was not a teammandated mini camp, not something that coaches organized. This was the players saying, “We need to get into the gym and we need to get reps together and we need to get ready for this season because we know how important it is and we want to make the playoffs and I don’t know, compete basically, right? You know, guys working out together might not seem like the biggest deal, but I do think for this team and in the NBA, it’s a pretty big thing. you know, playerdriven workouts, these kind of mini training camps, and the Pelgans have been really good about doing this the past number of years, shows a couple of things, right? It shows accountability with these players. This is the team saying, “We can’t wait until October to build our chemistry. We need to hit the ground running immediately.” You know, we’ve talked a lot about this franchise needing a fast start. This is a pivotal year. It’s always a pivotal year. This is a pivotal year. the schedule’s pretty tough for those first 10 games, right? You know, if you need to get off to a fast start, that becomes a little bit more difficult if you’re waiting until preeason to kind of build the connections and chemistry. And there’s been a lot of turnover around this team right now, right? You know, but you also need the buyin from these guys. And this shows the buyin. coaches and others can preach culture all day long. But when it’s the players themselves making the calls, texting each other, that’s when you get real buyin. That’s how you get a locker room where everyone is pulling in the same direction. You know, the Miami Heat, we roll our eyes at Heat culture all the time. But it comes from these kind of things. Boston, Jason Tatum, Jaylen Brown, they were doing these type of things early on in their careers. And look at the sustained success they’ve had. And then you look at teams like Chicago or Charlotte where you don’t see this stuff being reported all that often. Are they doing this kind of thing? And look at where those teams kind of stand. So this is the type of thing that can be a difference maker for a franchise like New Orleans. Now, not everyone was there. We’ll explain some of that in the next segment here, but Joe Dumar said Zion Williamson was there. you know, if Jordan Pool and Dejante Murray and Trey Murphy and Herb Jones are there, all of those are the kind of key players you need being there building chemistry because these are going to be key rotation guys for the franchise going forward here, especially with so many moving pieces, new pieces to this, right? It’s been a lot of turnover. Jordan Pool is in, out is CJ McCullum. That’s the type of thing that matters here. And it also speaks to leadership. You know, one of we just talked about it. One of Joe Dumar’s biggest challenges to Zion Williamson is become a leader. Be the leader. Now, I don’t know if Zion Williamson was the guy texting and pulling all of this together, but if it was him doing this, that’s really big. That’s a big step forward, right? You know, it it signals that Zion is taking on that responsibility in a way that maybe he hasn’t done before. And look, I don’t want you to brush this off as just like, oh, cool. guys are working out as they should be doing. Look, guys skipped this. Zion didn’t always go to these workouts with the team. Brain Ingram skipped out last year on it, right? Amid kind of the contract and knowing that he was going to be potentially be traded and wanted out. Zion being there, Zion potentially, I’m going to try and dig and find out like being the guy that organized all of this sort of thing. That’s the kind of like behind the scenes shift that you really need to see this franchise having here. This isn’t just the Pelicans being like, “Oh, we hope we’ll be good this year.” And being nonchalant about it. This is them saying, “Hey, we we have a standard that we want to reach. Let’s go and do that right now.” you know, just for the fast start alone, you you you can’t wait until preseason training camp, especially because you have two games in Australia where they’re going to be traveling there and then traveling back. And Joe Dumar said on the broadcast, “Hey, we can’t do anything for two or three days when we get back from that trip. That’s per NBA rule. So, we don’t do anything.” Well, then you really need this time because if you lose two or three days of training camp, preseason, all that, you don’t get that back. I don’t think it a lot of people don’t realize how how little teams practice during the regular season. You might go through shootarounds, some walkthroughs, get some individual work in, but you’re not going through like practices like you’re going to do during this. You’re not going to go through practices like you’re going to do in training camp and things like that. Every one of these days is very important right now. And the Pelicans taking this as seriously as they are, I think is a really encouraging sign for this team to be doing that. They do this every year, so this isn’t a particularly new thing here, but this is a group that is feeling like they can be competitive. Look, if they knew they were going to be bad, and maybe they will be, they wouldn’t be going all out to kind of do this kind of work. But this is where leaders start to emerge. And in a year of, you know, an offseason of change for New Orleans, you need those leaders to emerge. And I think, you know, we’re going to have an idea of who the leaders are at the beginning of training camp from these offseason workouts with what the team is trying to accomplish here and who those guys are going to be because roles are changing, right? Trey Murphy is going to be much more of a star on this team than he’s been in the past or have a larger role than originally asked. you know, he always ends up with a bigger role because of injuries, but now this is a time for him to kind of exert some leadership too and to grow into that. This is guys, you know, for Jordan Pool and Zion Williamson to build some chemistry because that’s going to be, you know, hopefully a potent onetwo punch with this team. This is where this stuff can really, really matter and make a big difference here. So, I’m excited that this team is doing these kind of workouts and I hope it was Zion organizing it. I hope guys really took it seriously. We know they took it seriously. Encouraging. Look, at least you’re doing it. Doing the bare minimum here is better than not. And there’s some teams that don’t have these type of workouts. What do you think about the offseason workouts? Let me know in the comments down below on YouTube here. You you fan? Does it just not move the needle for you at all? Let me know in the comments down below. So, coming up next, we’ve got some international basketball being played. There’s Afro Basket. There’s the America Cup. Um Eve Mei, Jose Alvarado doing pretty well. Let’s break it down. That’s coming up here next in today’s episode of Locked on Pelicans. All right, quickly international basketball being played here. And you have some Pelgans not in uh Euro Basket, but in Afro Basket in the America America Cup. Let’s start with Afro Basket with just wrapped up where you have Eve Mei playing for Cameroon who finished fourth here. Mi though over one, two, three, four, five, six games. It’s it’s really seven games playing one. He averaged 13.2 2 points per game, 7.3 rebounds, two assists, um half a steal, and more importantly, 2.7 blocks for Cameroon as they kind of made a run. They made it to the third place game. Lost to Sagal in that game. Came really, really close to making the finals, losing basically right at the end after a BS call on Eve Mi. That was a phantom foul. It is what it is. But really good to see him playing, getting lots of run out there, playing pretty significant minutes, 27 and a half minutes per game in this tournament. Look, the blocks are the most important thing for me here. There’s a couple other things that we’ll touch on too, but the blocks really stand out. He also had a seven block game in the semifinals against Angola, who won the whole thing as they almost won that game. Seven blocks in a game. He also had a three block game and two two block games. That’s really encouraging in my opinion. He needs to be this team, not he, but this team needs him to be a rim protector. Needs him to be a rim protector and showing that he’s blocking shots and kind of doing what he needs to do. There you go. You’re seeing some growth in all of that, right? You know, in terms of his scoring, it was pretty good as well. He shot he went two for five from three, so he’s showing some range. That’s 40%. But then 65% from two-point shots overall. That’s really good efficiency. It’s not the highest highest level of competition, but look, it’s not a joke either in any of these tournaments. Really good to see him playing out there. I like that he got that kind of run. You know, he obviously wasn’t going to be with the team in California as he was doing all of that, but really good to see Eve Mei do that. You know, it just shows that he can be a solid contributor. I don’t know exactly what it’s going to look like this year. Is he going to start? Is Kavon Looney going to start? But I like that he’s basically staying game ready. The best way for all these guys to be game ready is by playing basketball games and you’re seeing Eve Mi do that. Look, the fact that he also had success is going to add his confidence, right? It’s going to help with his maturity and prepare him for a pretty important role this year for New Orleans. So, I kind of uh I just love when these guys are doing this sort of thing. Another guy that he’s doing this to is Jose Alvarado for Puerto Rico in the America Cup, which just really started and goes through the end of the month. They’ve only played two games so far, but through these two games right now, Jose is averaging about 27 and a half minutes, 13 points per game, alongside six and a half assists and two and a half steals per. He’s shooting not great from three overall, just 27.3%. But overall on his two-point shots, almost 64%. He’s going to end up lighting it up in this tournament. There’s a couple of NBA players and borderline NBA players in this one, too. So, this is good competition, I think, as well. Puerto Rico is 2 and 0 so far. Um, they’ve beaten Panama and Venezuela. More games to come, and we’ll keep an eye on how Jose Alvarado is doing here. But good to see. The assist numbers are good. You know, he in theory is the backup point guard to start. I want to see that three-point shot follow a little bit more. They’re going to need him to shoot threes as there’s, you know, a distinct lack of shooting on this franchise right now. and you’re going to need that around Zion Williamson who we’re hoping is going to be healthy here. So, if you can kind of get that out of Jos Alvarado, that’s going to be really encouraging. They’re going to need him to be a spot up shooter at times. Right now, he’s just three for 11. You know, he’s two for seven in the second game there. If he can get better from there, I’m going to feel pretty encouraged. But he’s Jose being Jose, right? Two and a half steals per game. Yeah, we know what this guy does. six and a half assists is also I think very good so far in kind of running that offense and this team is going to need him to do that at times as well. So let me know if you’re going to be watching those games what you think of the international basketball being played by some of the Pelicans players right now. And that’s going to do it for this episode of Locked On Pelicans. Don’t forget about both surveys, the locked on Pelicans fan survey and then the locked on survey as well to hopefully improve Locked On for all y’all. Um so that’s really great. I love that we do that and want to hear the feedback from you, the listeners here. So, that’s going to do it for this episode of Locked On Pelicans. More to come. I’m going to address the Trey Murphy rumors in tomorrow’s show. We’re going to talk about it. I want to get into Dejonte Murray and his social media stuff, which is exciting. We got a lot to talk about this week. I’m looking forward to all of it and looking forward to being here with y’all. So, see y’all next time. This is the Lockdown Pelicans podcast, part of the Lockdown Podcast Network. Your team every day.

  1. zion came into my bar when he was 21. i asked him how he found us. he said “well, everybody keeps saying that i dont want to be in new orleans, so ive been intentionally getting out in the neighborhood exploring my city and showing people i want to be here.”. nuff said.

  2. Joe? Zion has just been implicated in a 2.9 Trillion Dollar debt scheme which suggests that he along with many others have influenced the Country of God through token appreciations and other money laundering schemes which has upheaval the near future and beseeched the immediate past; our entire black culture hangs in the balance. It is said that if he don't come up with 100000+ odds to win the Championship at an indebted value of 100 Million; then somebody gets to halo gods name and I ain't acting like I'm sure what that means. He has but one place in the time to come, and that's D.C.:_ "I'm just checking the Ball and d'in down everything". 💌🏀💯🇺🇲🙏😇✌️

  3. Dumars was gritty. He played with gritty dudes like Rodman and Lambeer. Was all defense. Won championships. Then built champions as a GM after he retired and they were the most unexpected gritty champ I watched in my lifetime with an undrafted center and a bunch of players that people considered to be cast offs. So if anyone could get through, he might. But is Zion a student of the game enough to even recognize those accomplishments?

Also if he is in good shape this year, I don't ever want to hear about it. That bridge is burned. If you want to "be in great shape" then show up game 1 in game shape. Because for years the last guy told us how great of shape dude was in, only for literally in game one to be sucking wind 4 minutes into the season. That's not hyperbole either. If you want him to be successful, he's got to quit smoking. It's not served him well. Too many games he's not fully there if you catch my drift.
