🔴LIVE 🔴 San Diego Padres vs Minnesota Twins/August 30// Mlb the show 25

It’s the San Diego Padres’s taking on the Minnesota Twins. And we’ll be back with the first pitch right after this. About to get started here. Today’s starting pitcher, Joe Ryan. And Singi, we were talking earlier about how he’s doing a great job navigating through tough spots. I’ve just been so impressed with when it seems like there’s more pressure, he’s more calm and settles in. He’s done an incredible job with runners in scoring position. Most guys, they get a little tight, they start to aim the baseball, but for some reason, he gets looser, the ball comes out of his hand with more life, and he’s able to wiggle off the hook of, you know, tough situations and get his team back in the dugout. First pitch 711 just missed. Checks his swing. Now it appeal to first. No swing, says Freddy Ferguson. Next offering is in for a strike and he walked him and that’s how they get their first base runner of the game. Belly tried to nibble right there and just missed his spot. Hitter didn’t offer at it. Now he has somebody to worry about over at first. Luisa Arise stands in check swing and he went 0 and one to the right side. Off-balance feed. There’s one. And that’s two. For me, that’s one of the toughest double plays to turn on the infield. The first baseman has to get inside, create a throwing lane to hit that middle infielder to start the double play and then from there completing it back to first. Really good job all the way around. Manny Machado up to the plate. Definitely scuffling at the dish lately. Barely hitting over the Mendoza line this month. And that one upstairs, ball one. and Manny gets a piece. [Music] [Applause] [Music] A swing and a miss as he chases way out of the zone. gets a piece and stays alive. Foul ball still a one and two count. Two out. Space is empty. Hard grounder into the outfield for a knock. Batting fourth base Ryan O’Harn man at first. Ryan O’Harn the next up for the Padres’s. Fast ball for a strike. Machado off of first with two away. Next offering is fouled back. Sit him down. Right side hard hit. They get the force. That’s out number three. One left for San Diego. The Twins coming up. No score. It’s Major League Baseball and it’s on the show. And we’re back. And today’s starting pitcher, Nester Cortez Jr., what do we have on him? Well, he’s been a real quality starter for his club. And coming into this one, what stands out for me is that right-handed hitters have really struggled batting below 200 on the year. It seems that they have a hard time picking up his release point and tracking the ball into the zone. So, we’ll see how right-handers do against him in this one. Bottom of the first, now it’s the power speed combo. Byron Buckton. And there’s the strike. When you examine Buckton’s career trajectory, the thing that really jumps out, the speed and the defense early on. That one ripped. Tatis hauls it in for the out. One down. And now we take a peek at the Twins lineup getting guys across the plate not exactly a forte for them this year as their offense is in the bottom third of the league in runs scored. Boo it becomes extremely frustrating and then what happens is guys press especially in runcoring opportunities and situations. On top of that I mean you really make it harder on your pitcher. He feels like he’s got to be perfect to go out there and win a ball game or at least to put the team in a position to win a ball game. So, they’ve got to figure out a way to relax, get those runners across when they have them on and especially when they’re in scoring position. Swanging a miss and a count one and one. Headed towards the corner and that’s a foul ball. And he couldn’t hold back. He’s rung up on strikes. Batting third. And now the rookie second baseman Luke Gishel. Just missed. Two outs. That one almost got him. fought off foul stays alive. Two down. Nobody on. Spoils that one and it remains two and two. I wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball. Try to go again with a fast ball. Slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching up. And that skips in the dirt. Wow. This guy’s really battling up there as if his run is the game-winning run. I love his tenacity. To the right side. Croninworth tosses to first and it’s a one, two, three inning. Twins retired in short order, scoreless after one. Back in Minnesota, top of the second. Here’s the center fielder, Raone Lauriano. Ryan back to work. Swing and a popup. Lewis settles under this one and out number one on the grab. That was a good hard fast ball with some nice ride up in the zone right there. Hitter looked like he was on it, but I think that velocity at the end just beat him. Instead of a line drive or something hit deep, it’s a pop up and an easy out for the defense. Hard on the ground to first takes it himself. Two up, two down. Batting seven, short stop, Joseius. So digging in now for San Diego, Jose Eacius. This lineup’s going to have to find a way to make him work a little harder out there on the mound. I mean, he is just mowing him down. He’s settling in. You got to make him uncomfortable. Maybe step out of the box, call timeout, do whatever it takes. No score here in the second. Fast ball for a strike. 0 and two now. [Applause] You can do it, twins. Yeah. And they’ll do it again. [Music] Swaying and a ball popped in the air. Nobody can get there and it’s a foul ball. caught him looking for the K. Padres’s down in order. We’ll go to the bottom of the second. No score. And welcome back to the ballpark. Bottom of the inning now. The Minnesota cleanup hitter, Brooks Lee. That one a little bit high. One and0. [Music] And that gets the inside corner for a strike. Was a good pitch there. Really had some run and finished little up and end just on the edge. And that’s one of those if you swing at it, hit a broken bat as you jog back to the dugout. [Music] And that’s in the dirt. [Applause] That’s hard hit on the line. Makes the grab. One away. Man, that’s one of those at bats where you have to remind yourself it’s about the process. He did everything right right there. Nothing to show for it, but in your mind, you have to convince yourself that it was a very good at bat. Matt Walmer now in the box. Comes up empty with a swing there. Right through there for a strike. One out. Base is empty. That one down the line. And it goes just foul. Next offering is down low. Good spot there, but didn’t get the strike at the knees and doesn’t seem too convinced by the call out there on the mound as he tries to get a better sense of the umpire strike zone. That misses. Two and two. [Music] swings through it and that’s a strikeout. Thought it was a pretty good pitch. Top of the strike zone. We’re seeing more fast balls in that location. Hitters, especially with two strikes, have to be ready to pull the trigger. And now Austin Martin. Pop foul out of play off to the right. Ground ball up the middle. That’s a base hit. So a two out knock keeps the inning alive. All right. Batting seven. Here’s Royce Lewis. Roy Lewis. [Applause] There’s the strike. [Music] check swing. He went too far and it’s a strike. No ball. Two strikes. Two outs. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. No runs, one hit, no errors, and a man left. We head on now to the top of the third. No score. Back at target field. All set for the start of the unit. And now it’s going to be Jake Croninworth. The pitch Croninworth a seventh round pick by the Rays in 2015 out of the University of Michigan where he was a two-way guy and in fact the Rays used him that way. Ripped to third tosses to first. One up, one down. Well, he’s doing a nice job of keeping the ball out of the air. Lets the defense work behind him with another ground ball. Good execution. Next to hit, Freddy Fine. Good defender. He’s been inconsistent offensively. Firm mean goes 5’9 in 200 lb and they traded for him earlier this year. Next offering is fouled back. Top of the third, no score and a foul ball. [Music] Next pitch misses way outside. just off the outside part of the plate. Ripped to short in the dirt. Nice pick. Great fundamentals there at first base. A textbook example of putting your body in position to make a play and doing just that. That’s how they teach you to do it. Back to the top of the lineup. Fernando Tatiz Jr. to hit here. Let’s do it, twins. Next pitch misses and now it’s even one and one [Music] inside corner and that’s called a strike. And that one way outside and the count is two and two on the ground to the left. Gets it to first and they take care of Tatis for the hour. Padres’s go down one, two, three. Nothing doing there for the Friars and we’re still knotted at zero. ready to go for the last half of the inning. And now for the Twins, Cody Clemens. Clemens. That one finds the zone. Strike one. One. Hard hit right side. Leadoff man retired here in the third. Batting ninth, leftielder, Trevor Lick. Here’s Trevor Lick singing when the year’s over, he’ll have a new careerhigh for RBI’s in a season. Trevor Minnesota on the ground right side on to O’Harn and that quickly two away. Now batting center fielder Byron Buckton back to the leadoff spot in the Twins lineup. Here’s Byron Buckton. scoreless here, but now he’s got to deal with a guy who’s got some power. Got to be careful when you’re talking about a hitter with this type of slug and these type of home run totals. Swing and a miss as he chases that one darting out of the zone. spoils a two- strike pitch and he’ll see another and a foul ball. He stays alive. That wasn’t an easy pitch to hit. It’s much easier to do damage against mistakes, but that’s not what that pitch was. That misses the zone and that’s ball one. Misses the zone for a ball. Well, that was the sweeper. Next pitch is downstairs. [Applause] Fouled off. And they’ll do it again. [Music] [Applause] [Music] Cut on and missed. And it’s a strikeout. And that is the inning. So no runs, no hits, no errors, and no one left. Three innings complete. We’re tied nothing. Nothing. And we’re back. John Champi with Chris Singleton. And set to lead off the fourth, Luis Az. Let’s go. And he chases a high fast ball there. Threw that fast ball right by him. Slightly elevated. That’s a confidence boost for this guy out there on the mound. See if he continues to climb the ladder. Outside low. One ball, one strike. And there’s a ball. Just missed. Oh, they have had a hard time scoring in this one. The pitcher out there on the mound wants to keep attacking. Make sure that they don’t get any confidence. and down on strikes and there’s one down. That was a really nice pitch call for that putaway slider right there. You look at the sequence in that at bat and he hadn’t thrown it yet. So, just makes it really tough to recognize and fight off with two strikes. I’m sure it looked like a fast ball all the way until it wasn’t. And now it’s Manny Machado. One for one with a single so far. There’s a line drive to left field. Buckton snags it. Two down. Now batting the first base. Ryan O’Harn comes up to hit. He’s 0 for one. Yeah, that’s fouled off. [Music] Check swing called strike. And that is strike two. [Applause] And that one missing inside. A sharp slider. Two down, nobody on. Top half of inning number four. that misses. It’s two and two. Two down. Dolman knocks that one away. And we’ll do it again. And the pitch went with the sweeper, but it misses. Raone Lauriano in the San Diego on deck circle. Swing and a miss at the splitter and it’s a strikeout. Padres’s go down quietly and we are still scoreless. Back in Minnesota, Ryan Jeffers at the plate. Ryan Jeffers and the first pitch misses for ball one. Well, these Twins just lacking discipline at the plate in this ball game. They’re chasing a lot of pitches outside the zone and those chases are turning into a bunch of outs. Can they turn that around and stay within the zone? We’ll see, but I think they have to. Makes the catch and there’s one gone. Now batting at number 15, Luke Kishel now at the plate. Rolled out to second in his first at bat. Pitch misses inside and that’s ball one. All tied up. We’re here in the bottom of the fourth. That was high. [Music] Little chopper rolls. Foul. [Music] Rips one to left. That’s a base hit. Everything came together perfectly for him right there. Nice line drive to the pull side right there, but he didn’t spin off of it. That’s the key. You still have to extend through the baseball in order to hit a line drive like that. Man at first with one gone and the batter will be the shortstop. Brooks Lee. That one not close. Ball one. Here’s [Applause] the pitch. Runner on the go on the ground right side and that one finds its way through the throw to third. Save and the goal ahead runs at third. Couple of singles back to back. Not much to this one other than just a willingness to go the other way and put the ball in play. That’s a team at bat right there. Nice job of staying back and letting the ball get deep. A chance now to take the lead. And at this point in the game, that could be a deciding run. And here is Matt Walmer. And he gets that fast ball by him upstairs. Runners are at the corners. One away. [Applause] Doublebarreled action in the bullpen for San Diego. Jason Adam getting loose out there. Jacob getting loose as well. [Applause] That one is absolutely belted. Tatis going back on this one and it hits the top of the wall. One runs in. Lauraniano hustles to get it in. Runner holds a third. So just one across on the play. Mission accomplished there as he picks up the RBI to give him the lead. Anytime you smoke a ball off the wall, you kind of think about what it could have been, but obviously you have to be happy with that result. Here comes a skipper out of the dugout and he’s ready to make the move. Nester Cortez Jr. done for the night and he leaves in a one-run game. New pitcher coming on. We’ll be back in a minute. New pitcher on here, Jeremiah Estrada. Still pretty early in the ball game. So, this bullpen has some work ahead of him. Best case scenario might be if he can come in here and get several quick outs, kind of bridge the gap that starter left for him. And next for Minnesota, Austin Martin. Golden opportunity right here. That’s off the inside corner. Ball one. [Applause] Swing and a miss. 98 on the gun. Estrada. He’s kind of a prototypical bullpen arm in today’s game. Electric stuff that results in a ton of strikeouts in a tough spot like this. That is a big time benefit. Comes up empty. That’s strike two. Now, as a hitter, when a guy like this comes into the game, you feel like he’s standing on top of you and it’s just attack mode coming right at you expecting to get a swing and miss. Second and third here. One away. on the inside corner for called strike three. Big strike out right there and that kind of takes the pressure off the defense a bit. Infield was in. So now they can move back, give themselves more time on a grounder to make a play. A lot more ways to work out of this and strand that runner at third. Now Royce Lewis the next twin up to hit. He was a strikeout victim his first time. Ball one there. Smash [Applause] to center way back and you can forget it. Home run. He’ll circle the bases. His second home run this series. And they add on. It’s 4 nothing. That one just sounded different. And it might have been the loudest moment yet. Man, my ears are ringing. I could feel that swing from the booth. [Applause] That’s as big as it gets right there. You take advantage of a mistake. That is an ultimate. Here it is. Watch it. I’m gonna jog around the bases. So, two down and here’s the first baseman, Cody Clemens. He’s over for one. That one at triple digits. Come on. Nope. Outside. And that one fouled off. This one in the air. Machado should have this one. And that is that. But the Twins get a three-run shot. It’s now a four nothing ball game. You’re dialed into the show. And welcome back to the ballpark. And now the center fielder Raone Lauriano. The Padres’s in striking distance but have some work to do. Boo. It starts with the laidoff man. I need a good at bat out of him right here. First pitch misses. Some movement in the Twins bullpen. Number 61 appears to be getting loose. Hatch getting cranked up as well. This one popped up. Foul ground first base side. Has room and he makes the catch. The offense needs to start showing some fight against this starter. He’s doing his thing out there. They’re going to have to push back at some point and make him work a little bit harder. Here’s Gavin Sheets now. Left hand bat. Grounded out his first time. and he swings and misses and it’s nothing at one. Well, he’s been incredibly efficient in this one. First pitch strike percentage over 70%. That’s well above league average and that’s what’s allowed. Oh, now this is blasted way back there. On its way. Gone. He’ll touch them all. It’s 4-1. Two pitches, two swings. that one for a home run. Looking to be aggressive all the way and it paid off for him in a big way with a low 90s fast ball. You have to live on the edges and hit your spots. If you don’t, you’ll get hit hard. Really good swing there. Patient, waited for it. It was like BP all over again. Base is empty. One away. Jose Glacius the next to hit and it’s fouled away. [Music] CIA strikes him out for the second time today. Oh, nothing too fancy on the strikeout pitch right there. Just a low 90s fast ball and I’m not sure he was trying to challenge him, but that’s pretty much what happened. Very hitable location, but he found a way to just get it by him. Croninworth stands in now and watches strike one. That split is a pretty nasty pitch. Explodes out of the hand. Looks like a fast ball and the bottom just falls out of it. There’s the strike quickly into an 02 count. Both pitches were down in the zone. I think you set your sights a little bit higher cuz you’ll have a tendency to chase if you look down in that area. Two outs. bows it off. Still one and two. Good job to fight that one off. Hit in the air right field and that one way back there and that is way gone. It’s their second home run of the inning and they inch closer. It’s 4-2. Just relentless. This team will not quit. A breaking ball on the inside part of the plate requires a hitter to stay really square with his mechanics. If you fly open with the front shoulder, there’s no way you keep that ball fair. an outstanding job mechanically. He deserves that home run. Here comes the manager out of the Twins dugout and he will make a move to the pen. Joe Ryan departs and he had to battle. Nothing came easy in this start, but he leaves with the lead. New arm when we get back. Now on the mound out for the Twins, Cole Sans. Well, the best relievers love the opportunity to come in and protect a tight lead late in the ball game. Some of them are just wired different. So, we’ll see what he’s got here. Two outs, space is empty. Freddy Fine the next up for the Padres’s and the first pitch misses for ball one There’s a swing and a drive. This one could be trouble around first, heading for two. And he greets the new arm from the bullpen with a double. He was all over that one. That pretty much split the zone down the middle. And those are the ones where you got to make them pay. Now, a huge at bat in this game coming up. Now it’s Fernando Tatis Jr. That’s outside. One and0. Two outs and one in scoring position. And that’s in there for a strike. And now it’s even. [Music] And that one fouled off. Tying run at the plate. And that is downstairs. Now two and two. Man, oh man. I don’t know how you take that pitch. That’s as close as it gets. And it’s fouled off. They’ll do it again. [Applause] Tatis waits. Got him looking and he did not like the call. But two round tripers in this inning. The long ball was working. It’s now 42. You’re watching Major League Baseball on the show. now pitching for back now to start the bottom of the fifth and taking over on the mound, Nick Pavetta. The offense will need to be ready for the breaking stuff. He’s got a great curveball. So digging in, Trevor Lick grounded out his first time. Trevor Lick. First pitch just misses. Swinging a foul straight back and he can’t come up with it. Still able to fire over and it’s in time. It wasn’t the smoothest play you’ll see today, but they still get the out. Buckton. Here’s the center fielder, Byron Buckton. He’s a guy who does it all. On the inside corner for a strike. Quiz. And ball one. Two balls, one strike. And that one hit to first. He steps on the bag. Old man for the fifth inning. Moving along. Two quick outs. Catcher Ryan. Here’s the catcher to hit. Brian Jeffers bowl for two in this one. Fast ball for a strike. Swinging a foul straight back. Got him swinging. Come on now. Down go the Twins in order as they can’t add to their 4-2 lead. We’re back and on the mound is the closer Drew Kelly. A chance at his first save of the year. So now here’s the DH. Luis Arise Luis Arise and a first pitch fast ball is in for a strike. Man, I mean, nice job just presenting it to be better than it actually was. Not even close there. One and one. And strike two. Down to the dirt, swing, and a miss. Gets to it onto first. Gets him one away on a drop third strike. He had him out in front, which isn’t easy to do against a hitter like this. Known for using the entire field, just couldn’t sit back long enough on that one. Here’s Manny Machado. Kelly in his rookie season, 23 years old. He joined the team as a free agent. And that’s a base hit. And that’ll bring the tying run to the plate. Now batting first base Ryan O’Harn. And now Ryan O’Harn. His July and August splits there. Come on. That one off the mark and that’s ball one. Line drive. Base hit. Just kind of slice that one into center. Backto back singles. Good extension on that swing. Took the pitch on the outside part of the plate and drove it up the middle. He let it travel just enough. Now that sets up a huge atbat in this ball game. Now a move being made at second base. Pinch running here. Mason McCoy. Mason McCoy. Two on, one out. Raone Lauriano the next up for the Padres’s. And that’s through their first strike. And it’s 0 and one. McCoy the lead runner at second. O’Harn at first. One gone and that is out of play. [Music] Line drive. Base hit around third. He’ll score easily and it’s an RBI single and now they trail by one. Well, he wasn’t afraid to hit with two strikes. I think he choked up a little bit, maybe spread out, but he got the job done right there. Runners at the corners here. One away. Next for the Padres’s, Gavin Sheets. Lauriano on the move. lifted in the air down the left side and that lands in no man’s land a foul ball. Swanging a drive deep right field that’s back there. Squeezes it. Runner tagging from third. He’ll score on the sack fly. It’s 44. There you go. Nice little RBI there. It’s a great at bat. Got the job done. Here comes the manager out of the dugout and he’ll make a move for the bullpen. Drew Kelly will depart and it’s a tie ball game as he heads for the dugout. Back with a new arm after a quick break. Now pitching. So they turn things over to the righty number 61. Number 61. Jose Glacius gets a chance to hit now who’s 0 for two with a pair of strikeouts. Pickoff move to first and he’s back in on a dive. If you’re a base runner, you got to stay dialed in here. Look for anything in the dirt. Try your best to get in the scoring position. In there at the knees. You got this. Late on that fast ball. He finds himself in a tough situation early. Just got to try to simplify it. Take a knock the other way if you can. [Applause] 0 and two now in the air right field and that will drop foul up the middle and he knocks it down to first and he beats it. Everyone’s safe. Really nice job of two strike hitting in that at bat. He got that front foot down and pitch recognition was on point. Pretty impressive for an 02 count. Now the go-ahehead runs in scoring position. So big opportunity for them to jump ahead late. Go ahead run on base. Now here’s Jake Croninworth. He’s already homerred in this game. First pitch doesn’t find the zone. [Applause] Swing and a foul out of play with the go-ahead run standing at second and Lauriano in scoring position and it is two and one. Good spot for the hitter. definitely has the advantage in this count with runners on. Look for him to be aggressive on this next pitch. Here’s a rip to short, but he’s there for the third out. They get two and draw even again. Heart of the order 345 coming up and we are tied 44. Back at target field. Bottom of the six. Here’s the second baseman. Luke Kishel. Pavetta back to work on the ground to third. McCoy throws to first in time. Leadoff man retired in the sixth. Now batting shortstop Brooks Lee stepping in is the switch hitting shortstop. Brooks Lee one for two. Well, both sides equally as strong. So not a good time to try to turn him around with a relief pitcher and put him on the other side of the plate. Just missed activity in the bullpen. Jason Adam getting ready to go. Jacob warming up as well. Swung on. Belted. That’s back. Gone. Ball game. He muscles that one out of here. And the Twins walk it off. [Applause] [Music] Hitting a walk-off homer is the kind of thing you dream about growing up. You’re in the backyard. You’re creating the most pressure-packed scenario. And what do you do? You come through with the big swing. Well, he was living a childhood moment right there. Nice swing of the bat. Nice win for the team. [Applause] Close one here today. and your final 54 for Chris Singleton and our entire crew here at MLB the show. Thanks for stopping by. I’m John Shami. Talk to you soon.
