How Much Could Coby White Improve As A Scorer Next Season?

How much can Kobe White grow as a scoring 2526 season? Well, me and Pat are going to discuss that today as we start a new series that we have. We’ll announce that on the show. We’re also going to ask, should the Bulls actually consider going after Malik Beasler? There’s been some rumors over the weekend. We’re going to talk about all that and more on today’s Locked on Bulls. [Music] You are Locked on Bulls, your daily Chicago Bulls podcast, part of the Locked On Network, your team every day. Thank you for tuning in to Locked on Bulls, member of the Locked on Podcast Network, where it’s your team every single day. That’s Pat, the designer, host and creator of the Windy City Breeze and host of the Chicago Bears podcast over at ESPN 1000. I’m Hayes, also creator of Chicago Bull Central and Chicago Bears Central YouTube pages and podcast. And today’s episode, by the way, is brought to you guys by FanDuel. Uh, football season is around the corner. Visit the FanDuel app today and start planning your futures bets. Now, Pat, let’s get into it. Man, we said that we were going to start this series and I’m really interested and fun to do this. We’re going to take one stat from every Chicago Bulls player last season. What we consider the best stat or whatever it is. It’s not all going to be points. Some is going to be blocks. is going to be games played, minutes. We’re going to take the best stat and and and discuss if we think they can go over under that in the 202526 season. And we’re going to start off with Kobe White. And I think the the the stat, especially with Kobe coming in, first time he’s going to probably be the leading scoreer, the go-to score for the Chicago Bulls. I think points is a good one to look at for over under for him. Last season, he averaged 20.4 points per game. over under that for Kobe White in the 202526 season, which is also a contract year for Kobe White. You know what? I I’m going to take I’m going to go oppo. I’m going to take the under. I’m not going to say much under. I think that season before of 19 points per game um is kind of where I think Kobe White settles in. And the reason I say that is because while Kobe at times was this very dynamic scorer and he was out there, you know, being that leading scorer and balling out, I do think that there’s going to be a little bit more focus on Modis getting the ball a little bit more this year. I also think you don’t have another score on this team. Uh um so Josh Giddy is going to take a portion of that on himself. And to me, I look at how Josh Giddy uh was scoring kind of at the end of last year. Not to say it’s going to be this, you know, huge uptick in, oh, Josh Giddy’s going to become a 25 point per game guy, but I do think just how the offense was run last year with Giddy taking on some of the scoring load and how he was moving the ball around to everybody. I don’t know if Kobe White becoming a ton or I guess taking a ton more shots makes you a better basketball team or a more winning basketball team. Now, do I think that you need to score? Yes, I think that he is probably the most dynamic scoreer that’s on this team, but I think there was a stat last year like when Josh Giddy actually decided to take 10 or more shots in a game. U the the Bulls ended up winning I I think it was like 65% of those games. Like I think Giddy as a scorer brings you a dynamic where you kind of need that to still be a part of this offense. And so I think Kobe kind of stays around where he’s at and that may actually be the best opportunity for the Bulls. And I get what you’re getting over that. I don’t think Kobe scoring more means necessarily taking a lot more shots. I I can see Kobe adding three or four points per game by just refinement of one thing is going to the when he goes to the rim, stop doing that stupid pass out thing that he does. Like stop doing that. Like I think get him getting to the free throw line which he did a lot more consistently. Look at Kobe at the start of the season where he was averaging almost what I think a little bit less than three free throws per game and towards the end of that season it was five six free throws per game for the Chicago Bulls. Just that refinement I think take could take Kobe from 20 to to 23 24 points per game if he does that a little bit more consistently. I see where you’re coming at with the not taking a whole lot of more shots per game. But I do think just taking advantage of the possessions that he’s on and saying, “All right, bet instead of getting all because he gets to the rim and then he want does that awkward turnaround pass out thing that also led to turnovers a lot of times. So he’d be also cutting down on turnovers and and increasing his free throw opportunities.” I think that alone can get Kobe White a lot more points per game. And then also cuz I I I just prepared for you to take the opposite view of this is that also if you look at the games where Kobe did have slumps, if that even gets more close to the to the mean for Kobe White. Yeah. I I averaged out he he actually averages 23 points per game if he just eliminated the the five or six games where he where he had kind of the median. So that like we talked about yesterday, just Kobe White actually being a 20 point per game scorer every single game rather having these huge swings of 30 and then the next game is 16. I think that helps Kobe a lot too without necessarily getting more shots. So I can see a path in that. But I I I love the the angle that you took on the the fit of Josh getting Kobe if they if they are picking up on what they did on that last year as well as the growth of Mus Bales as a scorer too. It may not be a lot more shots there for Kobe, but I I think that that getting to that free throw line is a key thing for Kobe White next season. Yeah, I I think I I agree with you. And when you look at I think here’s my thing, right? When you look at, you know, the run that Kobe had last month, I think he finished All-Star break 24 points per game somewhere around there, right? And or finished post Allstar break around 24 points per game. I think he had 10 games where he scored 30 plus. I think there’s like eight of them where he scored 35 plus in those games. You know what I mean? Like he he really went on a scoring tear. He was absolutely just balling out. There’s a 40 plus point game in there as well. Like and it still averaged out to that 20. Now I get what you’re saying, right? Where eliminate some of those drop off games where he scores 11 a couple of times or has a seven-point game and maybe that average stays a little bit higher. But I I think you probably have to live in a world where Kobe White probably isn’t the 44 points a night type of player. The the 36 points for what was it? I think he had a stretch of like six games in a row, seven games in a row. We had 35 plus points. Like I don’t think that’s who Kobe can or who you not even that he could be. I’m sure if you told him chuck shots he could be that guy. I don’t think that’s who they want Kobe to be over 82 games. And I think that Yeah, over 82. But I do think you’re you’re always going to get those spurts of Kobe White going absolutely crazy and and unconscious scoring wise. Like you’re you’re going to get stretches of that. That’s just the nature of who Kobe White is. And players like Kobe White, you’re going to have those stretches. I think the thing is like is yeah, I don’t expect those stretches to to be what we see more often. I they’re going to be special when we get them. But those those bottom tier performances, those 10 games, those games where you where you take 19 shots and hit and hit five of them, we got to see the more more of that eliminated than than more of the 35 plus point performances. Yeah. I just I just think he probably lives in more of the the median in that, right? And and the best games we’ve seen from Kobe. While listen, the scoring games have been very impressive. Some of the best games we’ve seen from Kobe have been the games where he’s giving you, you know, 20, what was it? That game we went headtohead with Phoenix and and we’re actually competing in the game. He I think he gave you 26 or 28 and N in that game. And it’s just like, oh snap. Like you did everything on the court tonight while still playing good defense. Like that that’s kind of the thing for me with the next step for this team. If everybody contributes in that way and not to say the big scoring nights aren’t going to happen, but like if you give me and I think Kobe does give you more of the I can kind of give you fill up the stat sheet nights, that’s how you win more games. And I think that’s going to be the best path for the Bulls to win more games outside of just Yeah, there are some games he’s going to go ballistic. He probably gets a 50-point game this year. like it has eluded him so far. Like it has eluded him to this point. I think 46 is his career high. It maybe that sounds about right. That sounds about right. Um, but yeah, I mean, and I I I also think like the way that I see it too, and I and I started looking at this last year, like one of the things too is like I looked at what Josh Giddy and Kobe gave you compared like combined like the combined production from your back court with as much as Kobe and Josh Giddy have in that offense is the biggest role and uses that they have in that that offense is the important part. So you’re going to have some games where Josh Giddy maybe is 12 8 and 8 and Kobe White’s 356 and four, right? And you may have some games where Kobe White scores 16 and Josh Giddy goes off for 28. Like the balance of that they need to they they they started striking that balance a lot more consistently. It didn’t happen in the playin. And I I need to see those big performances too against some of the bigger teams as well. Yeah, I think that’s the other thing too, right? like it’s as far as the regular season goes. It’s it’s cool to see, you know, find a way to get wins, get in the playoffs, and and give me those numbers when it matters. I think that’s always going to be the biggest thing for me with Kobe White. The the question mark that I have on him and will continue to have on him until he proves me wrong is, you know, I saw Zack Lavine put up 52 in a game. You know, I saw him get 50 in in games that we lost. And and I also saw him never make the playoffs. Yeah. Till Demar got here. Like, yes, you can put up points. Yes, you can score. Can you win? I think that’s truly the focus of this team this year. If we and listen, we we’re talking about Josh Giddy. If we ever sign Josh Giddy, I mean, it every day now it gets a little bit weirder, dog. I mean, at this point, it just is what it is, bro. I did I did read some, we’ll talk about it tomorrow because I wanted to have time to kind of have a full-fledged conversation that uh Sam Vini talked about like, hey, something that nobody’s talking about here is what if Josh Giddy just holds out? Everybody’s looking at like, oh well, he’ll take it’s either they’ll come with a contract or they’ll or he’ll take the qualifying offer on October 1st. No, there’s another option there. Joshkiddy could literally be like, okay, bet. Well, if I’m just not going to come to training camp, that’d be interesting. Much in the NBA, I was going to say last dude that did that, James Harden. Yeah. Yeah. That was just 2022 23. Well, didn’t he do it in Philly, too? Yes. Oh, he did it in Philly. Philly to get to to get to Well, he also did in Houston to get He did it in Houston, too. To get to Philly. He did it in Houston. That’s when he the fat suit. I don’t know if that was a fat suit. Well, whatever. Happy. Houston to get to Brooklyn. Did he do it in Brooklyn to get to Philly? Like, what? Bro, I don’t P people talk a lot about how Jimmy acts like a diva when he’s ready to get out of team. We don’t talk enough about the tactics. Like, even if it wasn’t a fat suit, if James Harden L was like, “Hey, you know what? I’m just gonna eat 20 pounds of nachos every night until I get up off this team. That’s still wild, my boy. That’s pretty wild to do. He got He got that professional dietition, bro. That boy can cut weight in in two weeks, dog. I I was I’m so impressed by that. He literally was Brooklyn and Philly. He literally like he got traded and people were like, “Hey, we don’t know. He may be slow to start.” And he was in shape the first week he was there. It’s crazy. That’s why that’s why I’ll be tripping when Muzz be like, “Oh, Luca’s fat.” I’d be like, “Give him a week.” Yeah. I mean, Lucas that also highlights a problem why it’s been like Zion can’t keep the weight off. With that said, next up we’re gonna be talking about the Bulls potentially going after Malik Beasley. There’s been a lot of rumors around that over the weekend. I think it’s more so due to the Bulls having their full mid-level exception. But first, we got to get to message from open phone. If you’re running a business, you know that every mis call is money left on the table. Think about the last time you had an urgent need. Maybe for a plumber or a service provider. [Music] All right, Pat, that’s funny. James Harden. Hey, bro. Bro, James Harden, Zion Williamson, all you can eat buffet at Portillos’s. Who bows out first? I’mma go Zion, honestly, cuz I feel like Zion is a I’m f to like slam everything real quick kind of eater. Uhhuh. And I feel like James is like, nah, you got to get a little Don Perion in there. You got to get a little Yeah, I mean, you got to mix in. So, I feel like James going to space himself out, but he’s also going to take down that buffet. See, that’s a big dude. I agree with you. I I got Harden, too, but for a different reason. Harden is known as the strip strip club god. You eat strip club food, your immunity is built up. I mean, so I think he’s all right there. You ain’t never had Magic City wings, though. Yeah, bro. Like, yeah, but what do you think that extra that extra juices on the wings is, bro? Well, you can get them to go, brother. You’ll have to go in. There’s a window on the side. Doesn’t matter. Them them them them wings be a little greasy. You think that’s normal grease? I don’t care what it is. It tastes good. Shout out to Shay. With that said, u Pat, so there’s been a lot of talk. Um Malik Beasley, who was uh clear, initially was reported that he was cleared from the investigation. It came out today. I don’t know if you saw that he’s actually not cleared as a person of interest. He’s just no longer a target in the investigation, which probably means that he’s not going to sign with the team anytime soon. But there have been some rumors on the Bulls potentially being one of the teams that are interested. The Bulls do have their full $14 million non-tax player mid-level exception uh to use. Malik Beasley was going to get a three-year $42 million deal with the Detroit Pistons that they ended up not offering when all this came out. The Pistons right now can only offer $7.2 million, so about half of that. And the Bulls are one of a handful of teams that have the majority of their non-T taxpayer. Now, the Bulls would have to buy out somebody, whether that’s that whether that’s the BH and um in and Javon Carter or a different player to make room for that. But let’s say that this is cleared because we know the Bulls aren’t taking a look at any player with any type of investigation going on. But let’s say it is that it is officially cleared. Would you be interested in the Bulls adding Malik Beasley? Whether it’s now before the start of the season or it happens halfway into the season or more around the buyout period, whatever it is, would you be interested in the Bulls adding Malik Beasley? Interested? Sure. But the the hard part is, you know, I I think that where Malik Beasley is at and it seems like it’s coming to the end of this even though he’s still being, you know, has to go through the process. Why y’all can’t stop Why y’all can’t stop gambling? Y’all addicts, bro. Y’all got problems. People People being addicted to losing money is always a wild thing. It’s just diabolical. It’s like, “Oh, I gotta lose this little bit of money so that I can go and lose more money in the NBA.” Like, what’s wrong with y’all? Anyway, I I digress. Like, the gambling stuff is crazy to me. Um, the Pistons have said, “We feel like he’s innocent. We feel like this is all going to blow over. We’re going to offer, we’re going to save a roster spot for him when this is done. I think it’s not just a money thing. Truly, Malik Beasley being a part of one of the first Detroit Pistons teams in a long time to go out there and actually win some games. I don’t know if he’s going to just up and leave for another contract. And with only 72, I think, to offer him, it’s still a raise on what he made last year. Yeah, still a raise. and and and very well they could sign him to a one plus one deal which a player option. He gets 7.2 he opts out and then they can if he plays well they can give him the same deal that they were going to give him. So and he played well last year 16 points per game 43% from the field 41% though from the three-point line. One of his uh best shooting percentages of his career. Like he he he really came on last year and and you know showed out a little bit for the for the Detroit Pistons. So, while I would love for the Bulls to go get him, and I think for the reasons that many of the reasons we just listed, and even just, you know, Bears just released Ricky Stroberg, I don’t care. Uh, what numbers Ricky Stroberg has. I don’t know the numbers any offensive lineman like that’s I don’t know the numbers of any offensive lineman though. So, that’s Darnell, right? 69. I don’t know, bro. issue with 69. That was 58. I thought I thought better of you. That’s that’s diabolical. 69 is nuts. But no, I I’d be interested in it for the Bulls um just to bring in some of that defense and and the three-point shooting. I just Why would you want to leave Detroit to come to Chicago right now? Honestly. Yeah. I mean, unless it is just motivated by the money. That’s the only way that I could think of it. he would have to be motivated and say, “Listen, I want to recoup as much as I can, but like you said, he’s part of a Detroit Pistons team that I think is going to be competing for a top four, five seed in the East at worst next season.” And while they did add Caris Levert and Duncan Robinson, um Duncan Robinson isn’t nearly the shooter that Malik Beasley is. Caris Levert is a much stronger defender, but I think they would still very much make room for him. Um Dra Pistons are definitely team with the arrow up, and you know, we got to talk about that at some point. Hey, listen. Objectively, I I I love their roster. Um, subjectively, as a as a Bulls fan, um, I hate it. I hate it. I hate that the Detroit Pistons actually it’s like Cade actually look like a like a a star near superstar level last year, and it’s just like, hey, man, this sucks. You know what it is? is I hate that Detroit’s been good twice since we’ve let Derek Rose go and we haven’t been good once. I I don’t think we can say that. I mean, we had the three Alpha season where we had a better record than them. We had the first season. We’ve had every season where we had a better record to them, but literally they will have gone to the playoffs twice in the span of us go one time. No, I mean since we let Derrick Rose go. We’ve had we had three playoff appearances since we let Derrick Rose go. We had Jimmy. We had Jimmy. What else? Oh, I guess the the whatchamacallit the Demar year. The Dear year. Wait, didn’t we make it with Didn’t we make the playoffs the year before the three alpha season, too? Or am I tripping on that one? So, two. So, then it’s two. It’s just the three Alpha season. Just the three Alpha season. Okay. Then it’s the three Alpha season and then Yeah. Then it then it’s uh it’s bad. We should be tied with Detroit. Like, no. No, you’re I agree with you. It’s bad. It’s bad. Either way, it’s terrible. They go right now. Right now, we’re arguing semantics over who sucks the worst. That’s that’s that’s the problem there. Um but yeah, I mean, so we’ll we’ll see what happens. It it would be something that I’m interested in. Like it would be a hell of a of a of a endseason move if the Bull if the Bulls were to be like, “Hey, Javon Carter, thank you for your time here. We wish you well on your future endeavors. Malik Beasley, come on down.” I just don’t see it happening. I don’t think that is realistic. It’s great to talk about and an option if it were to happen, but I don’t think it’s going to happen at all. Yeah, I I think I think he’s probably going back to the Pistons, especially because the Pistons are like, “Whenever you figure this out, we got a spot for you.” Like, yeah, that means we want you back really bad. like, please come back to the team. So, I like it and and I like the fact that the Pistons, you know, are putting the pressure on the the rest of the Eastern Conference to build young teams and get better. Like, hey, we did it. You figure it out and we fired a coach to do it. There you go. There you go. We got to talk about uh Vu getting involved in some early basketball here. Playing a little Euro ball. Vu, a little surprised by this at the uh at the age he is, but he’s a competitor. I got to love Vu. Uh, we’ll talk about that and more coming up next. [Music] All right, Pat, last topic before we get up out of here. Nick Levitz is playing in Euro Basket. uh he’s considered in the top 10 of NBA players playing over in Euro Basket during this stretch. Um you know this is something that a lot of the European players do. They actually have pride about playing for their country in these type of tournaments. Uh you know Luca is playing o overseas as well in this. How do you feel about Vouch playing in Euro Basket? Do you look at this is like getting him kind of a jump start on training camp which training camp opens in basically exactly 30 days. How you feeling Pat? Yeah listen I mean he’s he played it in it last year. I think he played um three to four games and he balled out last year. Um or not last year, what am I? Uh what’s last year? 2023 VH I believe played. So, so two years ago. Uh and he balled out. Listen, he he was 20 points a game. He was I believe nine rebounds a game. Like he’s exactly who he was. You know what I mean? and and it did help him come into that 2024 season a little bit more ready than he did when he came into 2023. I think 2023 his worst shooting year under the Bulls and the 2425 season turned out to be one of his better seasons uh shooting wise. So uh returning back to the floor, I’m excited to see, you know, kind of him get a jump start on this and just kind of see, you know, where he’s kind of comfortable at when it comes to playing in in Euro ball. He hasn’t done this, like I said, for the last couple of years. And, you know, I hope to see him come out and ball out and uh in 2025 this year. Yeah. I mean, I I hope the best for V. I mean, I know he has fun doing it. This is his style of basketball. Um and you know, if that gets him ready to come into the season and jump start that, so be it. Like, it’s nothing bad about I mean, the only thing that possibly could come bad, knock on wood, is any type of injuries or something, but that doesn’t really happen over in Eurobas. They’re they’re very respectful over there. um you know and it’s going to be good basketball. I don’t know if you watch Euro Basketball Pat, but um I am you know subscribed to their version of your of League Pass. So I’m going to be watching that whole tournament and it’s some really good basketball especially for a time period to kind of get you ready for the the NBA season training camps and stuff to open. People have been devoid of watching any any good basketball. It’s some good basketball over there to watch your own basketball. It’s just so early. Yeah. Uh what’s it crackoff tomorrow? I think the first game is at 4:30 in the morning. Sounds about right. So early. Like you gota like dog that’s a different level of ball. It’s a different level of that’s that’s shout out to the Bulls fans that do it. I mean when we sitting there doing games at 7 o’clock at night and and uh you know some of our guys who are in Australia like I’m watching the game right now with you dog. Like what are you doing here bro? Bro you have a job in the morning. Like so some of the better matchups tomorrow are look is playing Britain tomorrow. That should be good. Turkey and Latvia. It should be good as well. Ain’t that at Ain’t that the one that’s at 4:30 a.m.? 5:30 your time tomorrow is when that one is. Yeah, I won’t be up for that. I might actually be up for that. Actually, I do wake up at 5:30 every morning. Have it just have it on, bro. While while you while you getting your shows together and and Poland played, they’re the last game tomorrow. That’s at 1:30 Chicago time. Uh so you can catch that game as well. It’s going to be some fun games going on, man. I I I love Euro Basket. It’s It’s a It’s a solid tournament. They get their games over and done with, they get up out of there, bro. And and it gives you an opportunity to look at some people that, you know, we know AK is going to be looking at. I mean, like the the game tomorrow versus Lithuania, the Portugal game, you you got, you know, the the the Swedes vers Finland, you know what I mean? Like, those are games we know AK is going to have his eye on because he’s always looking for that overseas guy. That’s the young guy that you can bring over to America and develop. I think uh if I’m not mistaken, I think that’s how he found Marco, I believe. Are you really trying to make Is that supposed to fill us with with Is that supposed to make us happy? I didn’t say I didn’t say he got the right pick. I said he’s going to be eyeballing players in the Euro Leagues. I didn’t say he got it right. Ask Pat why like I need y’all to start tracking this because people it it it comes to me because we’re brothers and we do this show together. I need y’all to start tracking how often Pat finds a way to to slide some trauma in there before we end the show. It’s it’s amazingly how consistent he is with sliding in trauma. It’ll be Marco Simonovich campaign. It’s just always something he slides in there. Bro, hey, I’m in pain. Our basketball team ain’t good. Hurt people. Hurt people. Hayes. Hurt people. Hurt people. Hurt people. Hurt people. Hey. Anything left, Pat, before we get up out of here. Ah man. Follow us on everything at Lockto Bulls. You can follow me on everything at Pat the Designer. 1. Coby White has the NBA high for points in a play in game. Most fans also believe the Bulls beat the heat if Coby wasn't pulled for
Pat Beverley in 22. He's absolutely inconsistent but saying the kid isn't going to avg 20 as the primary option is a wild take.

  2. I think it's just consistency. We've seen him be streaky. We've seen him a little more consistent last year. He's a good piece to have and to build with. But we have to improve defensively. Vuc needs to GO

  3. Im sorry fellas, but I'm praying we have another fun season, but I'm hoping we miss the play in!!! We need to be in next year's draft!!! We ain't got nothing but matis bro!!

  4. what coby white needs is defense. giddey already have good rebounds and matas do blocks, while scoring at the same time. coby right now is like jdub without defense.

  5. Coby's growth as a scorer will be based on him showing up in 4th qtrs and in OT games. Coby has to play the DeMar DeRozan role next season as a serious late game scoring threat. Of course it is my hope that Coby, Josh, and Matas become 4th qtr scoring threats.
