Did the Detroit Lions get a Massive Upgrade?!
And then it’s like [Music] Detroit Lions fans, it’s game week, baby. It’s game week, baby. Hey, we’re getting ready to get into this Detroit Lions content. Before we do, please hit that subscribe button. And if you want to become a member, you should think about it because you can win some free stuff. sign stuff, jerseys, game tickets, memorabilia, gift cards, the list goes on. So, think about it. Three tiers. Look into it. But Steve, game week being upon us, how are we kicking this thing off? What are we getting into? There was a little little interesting story we stumbled upon, William, and it’s out there. It’s not like we’re the only ones who know about this happening, but uh let me just let me just share it. All right. Lions offensive coordinator John aka Johnny Morton turned down a job to be on Ben Johnson’s staff this off seasonason instead choosing to work under Dan Campbell. Morton has been showing up to work early every morning 3:30 a.m. to prepare for the day. Did the Detroit Lions upgrade at offensive coordinator? That’s the million-dollar question, William. That la that final part. Shout out to Brad Holmes Bulge. Uh, interesting interesting Twitter handle, but but great great question. That’s a million-dollar question right there. So, if you’re watching this, um, we’re going to talk about it. William, did we upgrade at offensive coordinator? Steve, uh, listen, as we’re talking about it, start right now. Start telling us how you feel. Don’t want to sway you uh, on how you feel by where we’re sitting, but I’d love to hear how people feel about this question. And I’m sure you’re going to tell us, you’re going to factor in uh or or or chime in on whether or not we’re on the right track or not. But Steve, when you pose that question, the first thing that I think about is David Montgomery being on the Pivot podcast and just a couple other interviews as well. Uh talking about Johnny Morton, Johnny Mo as they call him. This isn’t our nickname. Don’t hammer us. All right. uh talking about him and one of the things that stood out to me that Demo said was he’s completely different than that Chicago Bears coach. Completely different. Completely different. Went on to say, “But if this thing goes the way that I think that I think it’s going to go, it’s going to be awesome. It’s going to be awesome.” So, I don’t want to use words like upgrade. I don’t want to use words like upgrade, Steve. I want to use words like tough, nasty, gritty, uh NFC North style football, old school, and you talk about uh Coach Shaw, too. He wants to run the football down your face as well. These BFFs getting together, uh just running the football down your throat and then taking shots to J Mo and Isaac Tesla, too. So, or Tesla, let me let me put some respect on his name. So, I’m not ready for Motron yet, Steve. I’m not ready for Motron yet, but uh yeah, I think that’s what we’re going to see. So, I don’t I’m not going to call it an upgrade, Steve, but I do remember us playing a game fairly important against the Washington Commanders where it was a third and one and we threw an interception where we could have been uh going up at a minimum 10 points, but really I think we were on our way to go up 14. Instead, we uh the momentum completely changed. We get the ball to watch Washington Commanders to go down and score. So, I don’t think that’s what we’re going to see at a Detroit Lions this season. Steve, I think we’re going to see a Detroit Lions team. When it’s third and one, we’re going to punch you right in the mouth. Steve, am I on par? Where you sitting? School me. It would be irresponsible to just come out and say right now, today, Sunday, August 31st, that we for sure upgraded an offensive coordinator. Johnny Morton hasn’t even called a play yet, okay, as an offensive coordinator. He’s been our passing game coordinator. He’s never been an OC for the Detroit Lions. has never had a Ferrari in the garage. All right. Sometimes with a Ferrari, well, you don’t want to just on the test drive take it out on the highway and open it up right to 140 right off the rip. You know, you want to get a feel for it. You want to see how it handles. How is it stiff? Is it tight? Is it loose? How if I press the gas just a little bit, how fast does it go? But well, that that’s reckless, Will. That that’s reckless driving. All right. I can’t say that it’s an upgrade today. Now, when we get to like week eight, week nine, we might have to revisit this question. Uh because I can see the potential of it being an upgrade. Uh when you use keywords, Will, I think the key word I’d like to use is I want to see just a consistent offense. I don’t need flashy. I don’t need trick plays. I don’t need I want to dominate you. All right. Offensively, I don’t need to see trickery. I don’t uh trickery with trick plays. I’d like to see some formations and some personnel settings that uh that just create mismatches. Well, I I I don’t need to go out and do hook and ladders. You know, that’s cute. It’s fun. I want to run the ball down your face. And then when you try to put eight guys in the box, I want to throw bombs to J Mo, bombs to Isaac, let St. Brown get loose. I want to see Montgomery in the passing game. I want to see Gibbs in the passing game. William, I want to see this offense be much more consistent and dominating. Well, the first thing I’m going to say is this, Steve. Sam Lagota, you heard it. Steve doesn’t even want to give you the football. So, I don’t know what’s going on there, but I want to get you the football. Let me say that. Second, Steve, are you absolutely out of your mind? Are you telling me that you don’t want to just spend third quarters not doing anything? Is that what you’re telling me? That’s not at all what I said. That is not I didn’t even say the word third quarter. Yeah, because that’s what I remember out of that Chicago Bears, coach. I remember, forget the trick plays. I remember coming out in third quarters and you and I scoring more touchdowns than the Detroit Lions in those third quarters, man. So when you say consistent, Steve, I got to tip my hat to you. I got to tip my hat to you because you’re dead on. I want to see consistent football. I want to see dominance. I want to see us punch you in the mouth. Uh if if you’re if you have any loyalties to this channel, you know I’m a defensive guy first. That’s where my loyalties lie. I love both sides of the football. I love special teams. I love the whole shebang. But if I got to pick if I only had to pick one, it would be the defensive side of the football. But all of those same emo same same emotions, the same thought processes that I have defensively about just being a violent group, physical group, just being tough and gritty. Same thing goes for us offensively. That’s what I want to see. Steve, our GM talks about something and I love it. He talks about dirt bags up front and I think that’s where it’s going to start for us. So I think that coach Shaw and Coach Mort and our guys that it’s going to start there, too. If you think about what was going on out there with the Denver Broncos, they wanted to run it, run it, run it, run it, run it, and then take shots. B Nicks looked really good, especially for a rookie. Uh especially when you know things like how rookies can struggle, how how veteran guys Henden Hooker can struggle, right? So if you think about how they came in and they worked with Bo Nicks and got him going immediately, that excites me. I have no worries about coach Morton. I’m not going to sit up here and say that it’s a upgrade, but I will say it is bluecollar and that’s what I feel like it needs to be in Detroit. We need to be a blueco collar team. We need to me it would be like the Pittsburgh Steelers just being a five wides, no running back, airing it out, just throwing it 50 times a game. That’s that’s that’s not that’s not Pittsburgh. That’s not blue collar. That’s not Iron Curtain. All of the trickery and all of that stuff. It’s fun. It’s cool. And every now and then I’m down with it. But I would like to be known for having a tough defense that causes everybody who comes to town problems. Everybody, as Steve, as you say, it makes every quarterback coming to town check under their bed before the night before and the night after. Uh that that’s what I want. And then I want an offense that is is similar, man. Like you said, punch you in the mouth. So I’m excited for it, Steve. And I think that’s what we’re going to get. So I will do you one further. I’m not going to say upgrade, but I’m going to say better. I’m expecting this offense to be better than it was because we can say what we want about the Chicago Bears coach being an evil genius and all of the gifts that he has and how smart he is and and and the list goes on. The the bottom line is this. If you can’t get it done in the most important times, then it’s a problem. If you’re depending on trickery, it’s a problem. I’d rather depend on knowing I’m bigger, stronger, faster, and tougher than you night in and night out. And I think that’s what we’re going to see out of Coach Mo and Coach Mo’s offense. William, just the the differences in Ben Johnson and John Morton. Like Ben Johnson looks like the kind of guy that you go to a bank and you want to talk to a loan about and he’s going to try to charge you 20% interest. Like he’s going to try to rip you off and thinks that a sucker is born every day. When I look at John Morton, I feel like it could be a dude you’re just pulling off the assembly line at the Ford plants. Like you just a a blueco collar lunch pale guy. I’m just going to go to work. And I think that that is going to that’s exactly what Dan Campbell has embodied since he’s been here. You know, you talk about grit. A lot of people think it’s just a word, but that’s kind of like the state of Michigan. Like we go to work on Sundays, we watch football. Go to work on Monday. What you do in that game kind of dictates my week. Am I going to have a good week at work or a bad week? I’ll tell you this. If the Lions lose, probably don’t even try to talk to me till I don’t know, Wednesday evening is when I’m starting to get over it and thinking about the next person. You know, I don’t have that 24-hour, you know, sit there and just move on. Like, it sits with me for a couple days. I think most fans can resonate with that. John Morton, I think, is just an extension of Dan Campbell’s personality, and we don’t get to see him. He doesn’t get in front of microphones too often. He’s not the the the big name being interviewed like Dan and Brad and even Ray Agnu the other day. you know, he he gets a little mic time, but the limited times I’ve seen him, I just think this is like another Dan Campbell just calling plays. And if I if I think I know what I know, this is going to just be an offense that’s just going to line up and like you said, I’m just going to show you that I’m bigger. I’m going to show you that my offensive line is mean. I’m going to show you that my running backs are going to fight for every yard. And when you think you can’t stop that, and when you try and you overcommit to stopping that run, I have a really, really, really good quarterback in Jared Goff. I have the elite playmakers all over the field and I can get a little fancy then. But I think the Detroit Lions are going to pride themselves on running the football and then just taking the top off this thing because this offense I don’t I I hope you’re right, Will, but I don’t know how it can get better offensively because we’re been so damn good lately. But um we have the personnel, nothing’s really changed. We have the offensive line, we have the Dan Campbell, we have the Brad Holmes who just keep adding to it. Um yeah, it’s going to be hard for this offense to get better. I wanted to just kind of stay where it is, be more consistent and a little bit more dominating. I feel like we got to upgrade on Tim Patrick. No disrespect to him. Love Tempatrick, but I feel like Isaac is an upgrade there. And if he’s not an upgrade immediately, he will be an upgrade before the end of the season. And he’s young. Talking about longevity, I feel like our offensive line got younger. Uh I I’ll let you get into a new another piece of our offensive line that um maybe is going to enhance us even more. But uh when I think about those reason or those things, Steve, those are the reasons why I think that this thing is going to be even better. Uh Steve, one thing when you’re talking about bluecollar and you’re talking about Michigan in general, there was a time, Steve, that there was a place in Michigan that didn’t even have water, but they were watching the Detroit Lions. I don’t I don’t know if they still do have water. Like they have it, but they probably still shouldn’t be drinking it. There was and that’s I I say it uh jokingly a little bit but I’m being dead serious because I got family down there who was still watching the Detroit Lions games and figure hauling water in going to get jugs like there. So the bottom line say we are a blueco collar get it out of the mud do whatever we need to do type of state. Uh it’s not just Detroit like people look at Detroit and they just say okay man Detroit Lions and Detroit teams and Detroit as a city. Michigan across the board. We’re a tough state and it’s time it’s time to get that reward, Steve. I’m I’m I’m trying. It’s the week, so I’m trying to I’m trying to keep that keep the emotions down, but it’s game week and I I’m just I’m feeling it. But didn’t we get some some some good news? Somebody maybe maybe coming back to some good news. Miles Frasier back to work per his Instagram uh cleared to start practicing. Um, I don’t think we need him right now. Obviously, I think our offensive line set. We know what it’s going to be. But, uh, I think I’m excited to hear some practice stuff and what he’s getting after because when we had the, uh, Graham Glascow scare a couple weeks ago when he went down to training camp practice, uh, we were talking about what’s the shuffle going to be. And I remember both of us saying, man, it’d sure be nice to have a guy like Miles Frasier, even though we haven’t seen him. His his stats in college at LSU, all of his grades and rankings and even his film was off the charts. I think we got one of those possible steals. Um he could be the center of the future potentially. Maybe not this year. Uh I don’t know if we even see him on the field with our backup center if something were to happen or our backup guards. I feel like we have options, but this is just kind of a development year for Miles Frasier. But I’m excited because I think next year he could be potentially fighting for that starting center job. Maybe. I’m not going to just hand it out, but I think he’s going to be one of those names in camp next year. Not to get too far ahead. Um after we win the Super Bowl, of course. Uh Miles Frasier is going to be one of those names where in training camp 2026, we’re going to be saying this could be the starting center for the Detroit Lions for the next 10 years. See, I was leaning towards Tate flipping to that center spot and Miles going to that guard. But I mean, who knows? But my ar my only thing with that is if Tate looks dominant, if he’s a top five guard or he’s trending toward a top five guard in the NFL, I don’t want to ruin that. I want to just, hey, leave that there. You know, that’s a good thing. Let’s not try to mess with it. You know, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. and then if we need to get a guard or a center in the draft or if Miles could be that guy, you know, we’ll have those conversations much much later. But I think Tate’s going to be trending towards being a top five uh interior offensive lineman. You know what I love, Steve, about our our current roster? Versatility, dominance, versatility. Yeah. Versatility, dominant. The list goes on. Okay. Everything. You’re You’re right. You’re right. Everything. But, uh, one thing that’s sticking out in my mind right now, part of the conversation, is it’s easy to get an interior lineman at pick 32. That that’s that’s something that’s doable. You’re talking about interior linemen, you’re talking about linebackers, that’s a good spot to find a guy like that. So, if we’re looking for a center next year, we’ll be sitting in a good spot. Even if we even when we I apologize, even when we win the Super Bowl and we’re picking that pick 32, you know what I mean? So that that points me in a good direction, too. So I I do understand uh Taylor Decker’s also getting up there. Hopefully hopefully Gio can step into that role and he continues to uh ascend and get better. But uh I don’t know, Steve. I I just like where this roster is. I know a lot of people are panicking about the salary cap and all of that stuff, but moving forward and this I don’t want to look too far ahead, but I I think this roster is sitting in a good spot. Yeah, I I like it. And you know, college football started and I did what I do on Saturdays and Sundays. Like my wife knows in the fall, if it’s a Saturday or Sunday, I’m sorry, whoever’s getting married, you better be direct relative, okay? And you better check the schedule for by weeks before you schedule stuff, right? That’s just how it goes around here. But I was watching some college buyers today. And and this is just a little segue to the end, I guess, but I I’ve already found two or three guys that are high high on my list. They were high on my list before I even started watching football, knowing like, hey, this is a kid I’m going to be watching this year. So, scouting’s already begun. Well, this is a 247 program we run here, okay? When we start getting into the offseason stuff, you got to be prepared. You got to have some names. Um, I’ll just tell you this, the future. I think I found the future, will you? That’s all. That’s it. That’s That’s the teaser. That’s all That’s all I’m going to leave you with. I think I found the future. Uh we’ve had some conversations off air before. I think I I think I might know where you’re heading. I don’t think you do cuz I know who you’re probably thinking of and he’s not eligible for three more seasons. Will, [Laughter] anything else for tonight? No. I’m about to say something crazy, so just get us out of here. Stick around. Hit that like button. We’ll be back later with another show. Peace.

It's Mushroom ๐ Stamp the Packers week baby ๐ผ
ABSOLUTELY. Iโm just glad to see him gone .
Nice too see you both hope you both had a great Labor Day weekend.
Yes
@ 4:00 pause
Morton is different – neither better or worse. It is usually good to change things up. We did well, but we were probably a little stale/predictable on offense.
On the "Johnny Mo" topic: Here's one thought. Players don't usually have nicknames for coaches that they DO NOT like. At least nicknames that can be said in public and especially the media.
Missed you guys.
I'd love to see the first offensive play against GB with Jamo and Teslaa wide, St Brown slot and LaPorta., the two wide outs full speed down the side lines with JG open up to one of them for a TD. The first defensive play with Hutch sacking Love. ๐ฎ
What a game that would become. ๐
FOOTBALL! Football
Offense will slightly improve much because of Tesla. First time I concerned firstly with D.
Goff Fumbled on 3rd & 2
17-14…but who? Packers or Lions?
I have been making this same argument the past two years. Ben has been the other teams best friend sometimes, when he would go away from a dominant run game, just to call some flashy play. Fun to watch, yes. But overall it is not what is best for the teams success.
Amen. I want to see complete games from O. To man dudes/letting teams come back and our O doing nothing in 3rd/4th
Green Bay canโt stop the run , should be fun to watch.
Brad said he see Tate being the center after this year/for the future
JoMo would NEVER have given JaMo the ball to throw to our QB in the end zone: CRAZY!!!! Freaking BENJO LOST US THE DAMN PLAYOFF GAME THE Fโing TRAITOR; his head so called head was NEVER IN THE DAMN GAME WHICH WE SHOULD HAVE DOMINATED!!! We were robbed by idiots who let Ben run the show; period full stop!!!!!!
