Normally rosters are set by this point in the offseason, but look, it’s it’s really not in the NBA at this point. I was just on our Lockdown NBA game night show. We were actually covering some Euro basket, but also talking about Anthony Simons with the Boston Celtics. We played real or fake on there cuz I saw a tweet that was like, “Anthony Simons will lead the Celtics in scoring.” And my co-host on the show is John Carales, our Boston guy. And I was like, “Let’s use that one. Is that real?” He’s like, “Absolutely not.” He goes, “There’s a good chance Anthony Simons won’t even be on the team on opening night. That alone kind of makes that question fake that he’s definitely not gonna be because of that.” And I was like, you know, that’s a really interesting point that he might not be their leading scoreer because if he’s not on the team, you can’t do that. So, well, if that’s going to be the case, there’s going to be a lot more changes coming to the NBA. And when you look around the league, sorry for the dog that’s barking in the background here. When you look around the league, you see a lot of uncertainty. You know, you have uncertainty when it comes to restricted free agents. Un uncertainty being unsettled, right? Things aren’t finalized. What’s going to happen with Josh Giddy in the Chicago Bulls? It’s likely that he resigns their shirt, but what about Jonathan Kaminga, who seems destined for a divorce with the Golden State Warriors? That’s not going to be a simple deal to just get done. If a team wants to kind of come out of nowhere and make a move for him, it’s likely going to be a three, four, five team type of trade. And that’s where things get kind of fun. And that kind of is what reshapes this league right now. Look, if Anthony Simons gets traded from Boston, and it sounds like they are aggressively shopping him, I don’t think New Orleans should trade for him or has an interest in trading for him here. But could they get involved in a third team as a third team, a fourth team in that sort of trade? And I think the answer is yes. We’ve seen that Joe Dumar is willing to turn the roster over to an extreme degree, right? We know some players seem safe. Some players seem very very safe on this roster while some of them don’t. When you look at guys who conceivably are going to, you know, locks to stay. And we kind of ran down everyone in terms of tears, right? Zion Williamson seems very safe. So does Jordan P. So does Trey Murphy and Herb Jones. To me, that’s about it. Sure, like Cavon Looney is going to probably just be here for one year, maybe two at the most, but everyone else seems like you could potentially move him other than the rookies in Derek Queen and Jeremiah Fears. Does Eve Mei feel fully safe? No. Carlo Makovic, no. Jordan Hawkins, absolutely not. Sadique Bay, maybe given that he seems like he’s more of a Troy Weaver kind of guy. So, that makes sense. you know, Joseé Alvarado, we’d love him, but I wouldn’t say that he’s a lock to remain because his contract is very tradable. So, if this team wants to upgrade the center position or add some depth there, you know, wants a little bit more depth on the wing or in the back court, there are moves that they can make. And I think, you know, you can potentially get involved in another trade. Normally, rosters are set, but we’re starting to see a little bit of a shift at the NBA level where trades do get done later in time. a couple years ago was Donovan Mitchell who was traded in September. We’ve seen some big time trades go down about a month before training camps or so. And that’s kind of where we are. Like we’re less than a month out from training camp for the New Orleans Pelicans. They get started about a week earlier than other teams do because of their trip to Australia for those two games. So their media day is going to be a little bit early. And you know, when you look at Boston, this was a surprise to me. Look, when you make a big trade, you usually have some sort of introductory press conference or do things or answer questions about all of that. And we’ve seen that, but you know, the the Boston Celtics didn’t do an introductory press conference for Anthony Simons. You know, he is very available. When you don’t do that, you know, they’re looking to trade a guy away. So, you look for New Orleans to try and get involved in these deals in some capacity as a facilitator. Maybe a team like Milwaukee who should be aggressive, you know, on the trade front, who has shown an interest in José Alvarado’s making a move to bolster around Giannis, not trading Giannis, by the way. He played really well in Euro basket on Thursday, 31 points for him. Um, you know, if they’re looking to keep building random, which they are, and they want to add a piece or do other things, does José Alvarado get thrown in a deal that nets New Orleans a player that they want? And if there’s one thing we’ve seen, Joe Dumar is not beholdened to moves made before. Doesn’t really seem to have a ton of loyalty to some of these players either and is willing to just make whatever move he needs to make to improve this team, at least, you know, in his mind, improve the team and send them in the direction that he wants to go. That’s why we’ve seen a lot of roster changes for this franchise. And I would assume there’s been some, you know, we’ve seen some front office changes. I’m sure there’s some behindthe-scenes changes we haven’t seen either. So, there could be more coming. You know, Joe Dumar’s said, I asked him this on draft night, you know, he said, “We’re sending a message around the league.” And I was like, “Well, what’s the message you want sent? Like, lay it out.” And his was, “We’re aggressive in every facet. We are aggressive.” You can disagree with the moves that he makes, but I like that aggressive mindset of just a lack of complacency and let’s keep trying to get forward and working towards something here. That means, you know, when normally things are quiet around the NBA, he’s probably working on some things, trying to improve this roster, trying to scour the trade market and call teams to see what they can get done. Look, I don’t Herb Jones having signed an extension is not going anywhere. It feels like Zion would have been moved on draft night should that have been a thing. Trey Murphy is not going anywhere. And we’re going to have a big show on Trey Murphy on Monday because y’all from the fan survey love Trey Murphy, which look, I like Trey Murphy, too. So, that’s really good. I actually have a drop that I can potentially Do I still have it in here? I don’t know where it went. I have a drop where I could have played um that would have been fun. So, you know, they’re going to keep trying to improve the roster. I wouldn’t be shocked if you see something before training camp. There’s still an open roster spot. We’ll look at that a little bit next and the ways they can make other moves. Maybe not through a trade. Let’s look at that coming up here next in today’s episode of Locked On Pelicans. Today’s episode of Locked On Pelicans is brought to you by Game Time. Look, Game Time is my go-to ticketing app, especially with College Football back because there’s nothing better than being in the stands with your fellow fans at the tailgates before games. The only downside, trying to get tickets, endless cues, hidden fees, prices that jump at checkout. It’s why I use Game Time, right? It’s the app that gives the advantage back to fans. And it’s the easiest way to score lastminute deals with the best prices with no surprise fees. What you see is what you pay. You want to go to watch two lane, hopefully will beat Northwestern on Saturday. Tickets are great. There’s tickets available for LSU Clemson if you want to make a last minute trip at really great prices. So, where do the Pelicans stand in terms of the salary cap and things like that? You know, one of the things that I’ve said when we’ve graded some fake trades, hypothetical trades we should say on the show here is you have to keep the salary cap in mind. You cannot make a trade that puts the Pelicans deep into the salary cap unless you’ve got the corresponding move that gets them or sorry in you cannot make a fake trade that puts the Pelicans deep into the luxury tax. if you don’t have a corresponding move that gets him out from under it, right? There was one that was a simple trade of, you know, it was Jordan Hawkins for was it Sam or something like that and I was like, this is an F just because if you’re trading or it was for Buddy Heield, it was Jordan Hawkins and a first round pick for Buddy Heield. And it’s like, sure, Buddy Heield’s a much better player. Would love Buddy Heield on this team. Don’t get me wrong, but then you’re 5 million into the luxury tax. you’re gonna need another first round pick to get out of the luxury tax and you know dump a player. So that’s now two first round picks for Buddy Heield. I don’t like Buddy Heield that much. So you’ve got to keep that in mind. Right now the Pelicans are about $4.2 million away from the luxury tax. They are a franchise that has never paid it. I don’t see them paying it this season. I would like to see them pay it one day. Absolutely. when you have the right roster for it and under Gail Benson that’s the only thing we’re looking at here because prior ownership and their decisions has no factor on her you know so when we say you know this team has never paid the luxury tax they’re one of two it’s a little bit disingenuous because there’s been some ownership change in there and I do think that factors into it it’s not like Gail Benson has for 20s something years refused to pay it here under her tenure there has not been a team that’s worth paying the luxury tax for and while I would love for this team to you don’t have every advantage of a bigger market and not the disadvantages of a small market. They do and we have to just be realistic about it when it comes down to it. This is not me trying to save Gail Benson money. Truthfully, I don’t care. It’s just looking at it through a realistic lens of how this team is going to operate and function here. So, 4.2 million to the luxury tax. You know, they have still an open roster spot. They signed Jaden Springer, Jaylen McDaniels to J Spring Springer is for sure on a non-G guaranteed deal. McDaniels, I don’t think it’s been reported on. I would assume it’s a non-G guaranteed deal. Otherwise, Springer doesn’t have a chance. I think these are exhibit 9 deals that where they can kind of, you know, invite him to training camp, wave them if they want essentially. That’s smart. Have some competition in that. I like that. in training camp. Those guys are going to work really hard for a roster spot, which means they’re going to push Zion, Trey, Herb, and all those guys a little bit harder than someone who knows like I don’t have a chance here. So, kind of using that carrot on a stick is smart. So, the Pelicans have 6.1 million of their non-taxpayer mid-level exception. The everydayers know this. There are three mid-level exceptions that you can use. The Pelicans have access to the non-taxpayer mid-level exception, 6.1 million of that. So, if they wanted to sign someone to a guaranteed deal, maybe it’s Russell Westbrook, whoever, just to use a name, they can tap into that 6.1 million to use for it, you know, they have the by annual exception, which you can use like once every two years, hence its name. That’s 5.1 million. I don’t see them using that in the slightest because if they don’t use it this year, you can use it next year. If they use any part of that this year, you cannot use it next year. So having that future flexibility when it’s smaller than the non-t taxpayer mid-level exception you have is smart. If the Pelicans, you know, were $15 million to the luxury tax and they wanted to sign some guys, I could, you know, two players. I could see them using the 6.1 then the 5.1. That’s not the case with one roster spot. So I would imagine they’re not going to touch I wouldn’t if I were running the team touch the byanual exception just so you have access to it next year. They also have three traded player exceptions. That’s where you can just kind of like absorb a player into it um without giving up something in, you know, a player in return. You don’t need to worry about salaries matching. The largest one is 13.4 million, but when you’re 4.2 away from the luxury tax, that doesn’t do you a whole lot of good here. So, the Pelicans are in a limited spot in terms of just basically like cash to spend for free agents or things like that. You know, if there was someone they wanted at this point in time, you could make it happen, right? Russell Westbrook’s unsigned. You know, it’s been rumored maybe he’s going to go to the Kings, but now I’m hearing that rumor isn’t nearly as realistic anymore and probably not their plan. So, if that’s going to be the case, like if the Pelicans wanted him and they threw three $4 million at him, whatever his veteran minimum is going to be, you know, it feels like you could sign him. You could even sign him for a little bit above that at this point in time. And they haven’t. So, I’m assuming that means they don’t particularly want Russell Westbrook, even if I like the idea of Russell Westbrook on this team, but he would also be playing a very similar role to Jeremiah Fierce. And do you really at this point just just play Fierce would kind of be my take on all of this. That’s another thing to keep in mind with some of the moves that the team could make or guys that they could sign in free agency. You know, we know, and we’ll talk about Willie Green here in a minute, we know that his tendencies are he relies on the veteran players and sometimes really doesn’t seem to trust young guys. When I talked on the show yesterday about, you know, if Zion goes down with an injury, this team can still be competitive. But you go back to that 2021 2022 season when they made the playoffs, you know, in Willie Green’s first year and Trey Murphy was a rookie. Willie Green did not want to play Trey Trey Murphy like at all at times when it was very obvious that they should be playing Trey Murphy. Trey Murphy averaged 13.9 minutes per game that season and you have someone like uh Tomas Sataransky who averaged 15. Tony Snell averaged 18 and a half, right? Garrett Temple was 18.6. guys that should not have been averaging more minutes than Trey Murphy were. If you were there at the watch party at Mid City Yacht Club for the playing game against the Clippers, I about lost my mind in the three minutes that Tony Snell played in that game. I think someone probably still has the cell phone video me like basically being like, “What is this team doing?” They had a big lead, took Trey out, and then immediately like lost that lead. It was like a 20point swing in just a couple of minutes because of all of that, right? led to Willie Green’s infamous you’ve got to fight speech, but they got there because he made a wrong decision. So, if you have these rookies that seem like they’re coming along well, whether it’s Jeremiah Fears or Derek Queen or Micah Peavey, you need to play them. And sometimes you have to take tools away from your head coach to stop them from almost not self-sabotaging, right? But making the incorrect decision because of, you know, a resistance, let’s call it, to playing young players. That’s worth keeping in mind. I like the idea of Russell Westbrook, but if it’s just going to take minutes away from Jeremiah fears, no, I don’t I don’t like it nearly as much. And so I think that’s something that’s got to be factored in to the decisions that the Pelicans are going to make. You know, their depth to me is is like medium in the Western Conference. I don’t think it’s like insanely good. I don’t think it’s like the worst that we’ve seen. They’ve got some players here. You know, some of them have question marks around him like say um a Sadi Bay or others like what does Cavon Looney have left? But it’s limited minutes. So, you know, maybe he is a good depth piece and I do think he is. So, you’ve got to keep some of that in mind, too, of you still need these rookies to play. And, you know, this is why the two timelines approach can be difficult. And that’s what the team’s doing right now. You know, you’ve got to develop these young guys because you don’t have a pick next year. So, these guys need to develop a little bit quicker to kind of justify it. Especially Derek Queen. Again, that’s pressure on him that he didn’t ask for, but for better or worse, it’s the case. You know, for Jeremiah Fears, it can be a little bit different, but you’re the seventh overall pick. You’re supposed to show something, right? So, you don’t want to bury those guys. You want to give them minutes. But if the team’s also trying to win, there’s pressure that if they screw up a little bit, are they going to lose their spot? Does that hurt the team’s playoff chances? And how do you balance all of that? It’s not easy. That’s why eventually this team will need to pick a timeline this season. We’re just not at that point yet. But that puts tons of pressure, tons of pressure on head coach Willie Green. Let’s talk about that. That’s coming up here next in today’s episode of Locked On Pelicans. Catch college football kickoff every Thursday throughout the season only on Fire TV. So, Willie Green under a lot of pressure this year. As far as we know, this is because it can be secret at times. As far as we know, this is the last year of his contract, right? I don’t I don’t particularly like going into a season with a coach on one one year remaining. I think that can cause problems. If the Pelgens make the playoffs, Willie Green’s price skyrockets skyrockets right now. Now he gets all the leverage and the team doesn’t have any. But I mean, whatever. It’s not my money. Pay him kind of thing. But it also means that as they’re going in with this two timelines approach, is Willie Green going to play the rookies? I have no idea. Maybe they’re not worthy of playing yet. That’s a realistic possibility, too. But at the same point, like how do you know? You know, that’s where this is tricky. You know, maybe you just need to play the rookies for developmental minutes because look, burying them on the bench, having inconsistent rules for veterans and rookies, something Willie Green has done in the past where like, you know, you play poorly, if you’re a rookie, you lose your spot, but if you play poorly in your event, you don’t lose your spot. Like, that has very much been a thing that I’ve heard players behind the scenes grumble about. You know, that’s not ideal for their growth, their development. That builds some resentment. truthfully that confuses them. That stunts the growth. That just is not a situation we want to see at all. But it’s one we’re potentially walking into this year because of the Pelicans not committing to a rebuild, retool kind of thing, trying to be competitive while also having rookies. But Willie Green’s also coaching for his job. He’s going to rely on the players that he trusts. There’s tons of pressure here, right? Like this is I don’t want to call it a volatile situation. It’s not not that though. You know, one of the things to keep in mind, and the everydayers have heard this a bunch, is that I do think we can get some clarity on Willie Green early on this season. You know, maybe by the end of the NBA Cup, the inseason tournament, we have some ideas here. So, if that’s the case, then that’ll get resolved sooner rather than later. And I think that would be, you know, a very, very good thing. But if it’s not, this is going to impact all season long. You know, there is some depth here. This is an offensively loaded team compared to defensive. So, this is going to be on Willie Green to figure that out, right? If this team comes out of the gates and their offense looks bad, that that can’t happen this year. Not with this group, not with this the players that you have, you need to design a very competent offense that is working night in night out, that gets it done in clutch situations. even though that tends to kind of default more to isolation play one-on-one and all of that, they need to be doing all of the things. And if they’re not, they need to pull the plug on Willie Green quickly. Now, I’m, you know, he might be able to figure it out. I think there is a good chance that he’s going to really rely on James Burggo. I can tell you that Brandon Ingram was an issue for the offense in the past of him not wanting to play like the style of basketball that they wanted to play. That was like a very like a legitimately very big problem. If Brandon Ingram won’t run the offense that you want to run, well, you can’t run the offense with one of your highest usage guys not kind of buying in. You know, this is a new group. Willie Green’s going to need to develop their chemistry quickly with them. One thing he is very, very good at doing is developing an an individual connection, which with each individual player. I think that’s really important right now. So, there’s reasons to believe he can figure this out and lead the team to success, but the pressure is going to be on. The pressure is going to be on and the margin for error, particularly with the tough start to the season per the schedule, that margin for error is is really not there because if things are are not trending well, look, you got to make the playoffs. There’s no point in being bad and that means you’re going to have to do something and you know, the longtime listeners have heard me say this, there’s like a triage order to things during the season. You can’t change the whole roster, especially in December. So, if that’s going to be the case, you got to start at the head coach level where you fire the coach and just hope a different voice will do something. So, we’ll see. There’s a lot of pressure here going into the season. Makes me excited for it, though. So, coming up next week, next week on Locked on Pelicans fan survey all week, we are starting with Trey Murphy. There’s going to be a Zion Williamson show as well. We’re going to look at the arena ownership, everything. We’re laying out all the results of the survey. I’m looking forward to it. 1. I’m from Louisiana but stay in Atlanta.. I’m tired of these people talking trash on my saints and pels .. we gotta make some noise this season 💯

  2. I'll do another year of league pass just to see the game when somewhere in week 7 Z gets injured again and misses another 4 months

  3. jake, i respect that you actually watch every pelicans game and know this team better than the national guys. but you’re leaning into the same surface level narratives you usually call out, especially with the derrick queen trade and this “two timelines” idea.

first, the queen trade. acting like giving up an unprotected 2026 pick is reckless ignores context. if the pels and bucks perform as expected, that pick projects in the 20s, where the odds of an impact player drop off. moving up 10 spots is never free. queen fits exactly what dumars said he wants — offensive skill, ability to break down defenses, team first mentality. that is a smart, aggressive play. if the lakers did this, it would be called bold. when the pels do it, it gets labeled risky. that is market bias, not logic.

second, the “rookies won’t develop without minutes” take does not hold up here. herb jones was in the starting lineup by his third nba game and finished with 69 starts as a rookie. trey murphy barely played as a rookie — 62 games, only 1 start, 13.9 minutes per game, with g league stints — and now every team in the league wants him. jose alvarado played 54 games at 15 minutes a night as a rookie and became a key role player. yves missi just started 67 of 73 games as a rookie. willie green has shown he will play young guys when they help him win, and if they need seasoning, g league reps and limited minutes do not stunt a career. development is not linear, and sitting some early does not prevent a year three or year four leap.

that is why the “two timeline” framing is misleading. it makes it sound like a philosophical crisis when it is just normal roster building. vets carry the load, rookies improve year over year whether they play 30 minutes or 12, and if a young guy pops early, that is a bonus. calling that a two timeline problem is just recycling a narrative that underrates this front office and this coach.
