🔴LIVE 🔴Tampa Bay Rays VS Washington Nationals / August 31/ Envivo Tv/ /MLB THE SHOW 25

And if you want to be playing meaningful games at the end of September, you got to put your head down and grind for the next eight weeks. Hello and welcome. Thanks for joining us. Inner League Baseball on MLB the show. It’s the Tampa Bay Rays and the Washington Nationals. First pitch coming at you right after the break. Just about set to go. And on the hill, Mitchell Parker and Singy. We were talking earlier about how he’s doing a great job navigating through tough spots. Well, he’s been a very dependable starter for his club and what stands out for me is that left-handed hitters have really struggled batting below 200 against him and it just tells me they have a hard time tracking the baseball. Maybe it’s the release point, maybe it’s the motion, but just some way somehow they’ve got to figure out a way to pick it up and try to have some success from the left side. number 14 the leadoff batter as he looks at ball one and that one wrapped foul here we go line drive caught all right let’s take a look at the Rays lineup and one of the most exciting young stars in the sport junior Camro and Boo he’s a Big time run producer for these guys, man. Leading the team in homers, runs batted in, doing damage on the regular, man. Making opposing pitchers just sweat out there. It’s kind of fun to watch. Get ready for a show when he steps into the box. Junior Camroero batting with one down, takes a strike. Man, I mean, nice job just presenting it to be better than it actually was. He’s an intimidating presence in the batters box. I mean, even when he’s swinging and missing, I still don’t know how confident pitchers are that, hey, when he walks to the plate, this guy’s an out. I know there have been some tough times, but I think each pitcher knows that, yeah, I could be the guy where he gets everything right and he hits it 500 ft. No doubt. One out. Base is empty. Missed inside with the curve and it remains two and two. [Music] Good eye. right there. Really good take, especially with two strikes. Ripped to third and caught. That swing right there tells me he’s seeing the ball pretty well. I know it didn’t produce a hit, but he made solid contact and that’s all you’re looking to do anytime you’re at the plate. Yandi Diaz now Chris, he’s definitely going to finish the year with a new careerhigh in homers. We just don’t know how many he’s going to hit quite yet. Right through there for a strike. Parker 25 years old and he’s one of the few players in Major League Baseball born in New Mexico. Foul ball one there. Two outs. Base is empty. That’s foul off to the right side. keeps the AB going the one two. Gets a piece there. We’ll do it again. That wasn’t an easy pitch to hit. It’s much easier to do damage against mistakes, but that’s not what that pitch was. That one ripped left field. That’ll make it out of here. He’ll circle the bases. His 23rd of the year. Just like that, they move in front. It’s one- nothing. That’s a fun way to take the lead. Just hit one out of the park. Looks like this guy was looking out over the plate, but he was ready to turn on the inside. Fast ball. So direct to the pitch. Absolutely blasted out of this ballpark. Brandon Laauo the next to hit. Takes ball one. Two down. Nobody on. So a foul ball makes it one and two. Two outs. Pitch misses. Two and two. Knocks that one away. And we’ll do it again. Here’s a 2-2. Goes down swinging for the strike out. Couldn’t hit the fast ball at the knees and the Rays get one on a solo shot. It’s now a one- nothing ball game back here in Nationals Park. And today’s starting pitcher, Adrien Howser. And this will be a tough test for him. Pitching on the road has not been that kind to his numbers. Well, I think he’s just got to trick himself mentally and put himself in a comfort level like he does at home. I know it’s not the same being on the road as away from home in terms of being able to have a routine and be consistent with it. But this game is so much mental and he’s going to have to find a way to play a mind game with himself to move through this ball game and get a W. James Wood, the leadoff batter, as he swings through it for strike one. Left hand hitter waits. Comes up empty. That’s strike two. Wow. No fair right there. I mean, that slider didn’t move till the very last moment. Incredibly difficult to pick that up. Just kind of have to tip your cap on that pitch. on the ground to first. Diaz takes it himself. One up, one down. As we take a look at the Nationals lineup, they’re dealing with a sicker specialist on the mound, which can be a big time challenge when he’s right and working mostly from the knees down. Well, I think the approach you take is really try to lay off of those pitches down in the zone until he gets some called strikes and then forces you to go after that pitch. But until then, make him elevated because guys that throw those sinkers, those two seamers, really hard for them to be effective up in the zone. Those are pitches you can hammer and when you get a cookie, you don’t want to miss it. Line drive caught. There’s nothing better than watching a third baseman make great plays like that. You can’t just throw anyone out there and hope it works out. That’s the hot corner and it takes a special breed to want to play that position. And now the switch hitting first baseman Josh Bell and first offering is fouled off and that one is lifted in the air. Pereira under it and that will end the inning. And welcome back to the ballpark. All set for the start of the inning. Here’s the left fielder, Christopher Morell. Parker back to work. swing and a miss as he was out front and that’s in for a strike. Well, we call that keyholeing. Even though it’s right there and looks pretty good, if he doesn’t love it, he’s not going to swing that early in the count. [Music] He goes down looking. Now up for Tampa Bay, Carson Williams. That one out to right. And there’s two away. Batting seven. Right. Two down. Base is empty. Josh Low will hit next. He’s already set a new career best for stolen bases in a season, Chris. And that’s outside. Swing and a high-fly ball left field. Makes the grab and that’s the third out. We played an inning and a half. It’s one- nothing. Bottom of the inning and now it’s Luis Garcia. This has been a career year for him when it comes to driving in runs. First pitch doesn’t find the zone. Last couple of pitches breaking balls away. I think he’s going to have to come firm inside to be able to open up that location if he wants to go back there later in this count. [Applause] Let’s go. [Applause] And a base hit and a good start to the inning. I’m sure he feels really good about that one. Just a cookie down the middle. I mean, those are the ones you dream about. Ones in the cage you’re just hoping you get in the ball game. Right down the middle. Not a whole lot of velocity. Right on top of it. Riley Adams digging in for the Nationals. That clips the corner. [Music] fouled off. He was late with two strikes. May see some movement over there at first base. Trying to stay out of the double play right here. And there’s a ball. Man, oh man. I don’t know how you’d take that pitch. That’s as close as it gets. Rolled to short. Could be two. Off-balance feed. There’s one to Diaz. That’s two. Oh man, what a smooth double play. That was a thing of beauty from start to finish. Dalon Lyle digs in now. Pitch misses there. And that’s ball one. Next offering is fouled back. [Music] Swings through that one. Good late sink on that fast ball out of the hand. Looks so good. And then by the time he gets in the hitting zone, hard to get the barrel to it. Diaz, he takes it himself to the bag and that’ll do it. Nationals go quietly. They trail here one- nothing. Out of the third inning. And here is Everson Pereira. Ever Pereira. That one is absolutely belted. And that should be extra bases. Now he’ll turn for second and he’s got a leadoff double. Well, a swing like that can help you come out of the struggle. We saw the numbers coming into the ball game. But all he’s trying to do at this point is help his team win. Runner in scoring position. No outs. Forez getting ready to hit. Good defender. He’s been inconsistent offensively. Just missed. Tampa. Swinging a foul out of play. No outs. Runner on second. Instead of letting the hitter get his arms extended, tied him up a little bit. Slightly up, slightly in. Foul ball there. man at second. Got him. Not what you’re looking for after the leadoff double. A strikeout and there’s one away. Man, it’s so difficult as a hitter to get on plane with that pitch. It’s breaking down and in, and you’ve got to find a way to match the plane. And if it’s nasty like that one, bite at the end. Most times you’re swinging over the top and walking back to the dugout. Back to the top of the lineup. To the plate now for the Rays is the DH. He’s over one. And a first pitch fast ball is in for a strike. [Music] And this guy’s got a great feel for his breakthrough ball today. The O2 and that just misses. Really good two- strike pitch right there. Surprised he was able to spit on that thing. that one the other way. Makes the grab for the second out. It’s never fun going back to the dugout after hitting a line drive that finds a glove, but you will get some high fives. You know, when you make great contact, you feel like you’ve done everything right. But in this game of baseball, not everything is in your control. Junior Camro next to hit for the Rays. Camero struggling on the road this season. Better results at home. Come on. And that is out of play. Man on second. Two down. And that one fouled off. And the O2 way inside and that’s in the dirt. Pereira on at second with two down. in the dirt. Yandi Diaz would be next if they can extend the inning. And he’s homered already, so I’m sure he’d love a chance to do some more damage here. Two outs. Spoils a two strike pitch. And he’ll see another [Music] So now two on and two outs. Man, that’s a tough one to take on the full count, but I guess he saw it really well. It’s a really nice plate appearance. First and second, two outs. And here’s the first baseman, Yandi Diaz. He’s already homered here in this one. And the first pitch misses for ball one. Homeplayed umpire is trying to tighten things up a little bit. Next offering is in for a strike. Breaking ball in there for a strike. And a swing and a miss. He’s notched four strikeouts now. So, it’s no runs on a hit, no errors, and two are left. We move on to the bottom of inning number three. It’s the Rays one and the Nationals nothing. Back in Washington DC now. It’s Paul D. Young up to the plate. Paul Young. Strike one. Well, don’t expect too many more high fast balls. This is a good sinker ball pitcher and sometimes they can make mistakes trying to pitch up in the zone. Look for him to stay down around the knees to be effective. Swing and a highf fly ball that’s out to center. Are you kidding me? Squeezes it and a quick out number one. batting eight right Dylan. And now the right fielder Dylan Cruz. Come on. We need to win. Come on. Let’s win. Yeah, that’s fouled off. Fought off. Foul. [Music] cuts and misses. It’s a strike out. That was a wellexecuted slider away for the strikeout right there. First two pitches filled up the zone and got him ahead 02 in the count. And at that point, you can start expanding the zone as a pitcher. He made him chase and got the quick strikeout. And now up for Washington, Robert Hassel the third. And that one missing low. [Music] Inside and the count is 2 and 0. And another ball. Well, I would expect in this three 0 count. You’re taking all the way. See if he’ll walk you. James Wood in the on deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. That’s ball four tried another fast ball but missed the spot. One of the things about that two-out walk, the base runner over at first base is going to have a very aggressive secondary lead. So, a ball down the line or into the gap will produce a two out RBI. And those are the best. That is if you are the offensive side of it. [Applause] Smoked on the ground. the second, third out. So, one left for Washington and it remains one- nothing. Out of the fourth, now it’s the second baseman, Brandon Laauo. Brandon Laauo. Lao measures 5′ 10 in 190 lb and he was a third round pick back in 2015. Well, these Rays showing great discipline at the plate and patience definitely seems to be the name of their game in this one. He’s only given up one run, but the starter pitch count is starting to get up there and that might be the best news yet for this offense. CIA strikes him out for the second time today. Well, I think that’s a case of overthinking right there. You got three straight fast balls looking in the 02 count just to pour it back. So, next to the plate for Tampa Bay, Christopher Morell. Ball one, no strikes. You know, sometimes all it takes is getting to the next arm before an offense does any damage. And that might be the case today. Base is empty, one away. Top half of inning number four. And now two and nothing. That’s through there for a strike. That clips the corner. Wow. Just a beautiful back door slider right there. If you’ve got any chance of hitting that pitch, you have to wait until the absolutely last mil. It’s in and out of his glove. Gets off a throw and they get him. The misplay made it a bit messy, but they cleaned things up for the out. Number Carson Williams next to hit for the Rays. Fly to right his first time. This is a guy who’s in the lineup first and foremost because of what he contributes defensively, Chris. And when you talk about preventing runs from being scored, this guy is a big contributor. And it’s a one, two, three inning. Nothing doing it for Tampa, but they lead it one to nothing. And we’re back. And the batter will be the shortstop, CJ Abrams. Taking high in the draft. He’s had that top prospect labeled over him since he put on a professional uniform. But at some point, that starts to go away and you’ve got to produce at the big league level. Highfly ball and that one curling foul down the right side. I was always told it’s hard to take you off the field when you play really good defense, especially at a premier position. And that’s what he does. And a curve ball is just outside and a count one and two. [Music] Ah, that hit him. And the leadoff man is aboard to start the inning. No outs. Runner at first. Up now for Washington. Josh Bell 0 for one with a fly out to center. Close one. Doesn’t get the call. One and0 with the tying run on at first. We’re here in the bottom of the fourth to short. Could be two. Williams over to second. Back to first and that is a double play. Nice soft hands on the backhand right there in the six hole. Starts the double play. That’s not an easy throw, but he puts it on the money. Really good job to get that double play started. Luis Garcia digging in for the Nationals. First offering and it just misses. Ground ball to the right side. takes it himself and he has thrown four shut out innings. Nothing do for Washington. Still behind by a count of one to nothing. Jackson Rutled takes over on the mound and he’s had his struggles so far this year. As you can see the inflated RA looking to bring that down a little bit right here. Josh Low now at the plate. his July and August splits there. Off the plate inside and it’s one and0. The Nationals have some action going in the pen. Jake Irvin preparing to come on if needed. and downstairs. Now this is in the air down the line and that’s a foul ball. Next pitch misses. Three and one. That one misses. So a leadoff walk. Pretty easy walk right there. Last pitch wasn’t even much to think about. And stepping in for the Rays, Everson Pereira doubled in his first AB. Turn two. And that’s outside. And that’s ball one. Low on at first. Nobody out. Next offering is in for a strike. That one fouled off. [Music] Next offering upstairs. got him looking. That was pretty nasty. Well, they locked him up with the cutter on the outside right there. And I got to think he was looking middle in because he just couldn’t pull the trigger. And you know, with two strikes, fast ball coming in. You’ve got to be ready to swing it. That time it cut to the outside part of the plate and he just couldn’t pull the trigger. Throw over to first, but it’s wide to the bag and gets away. The throw won’t get there in time. And they don’t get an out on the play. Fouled off down the right side. [Music] Check. Swing. Called. Strike. [Applause] Strike three. And that’s two in a row. You got to be ready to swing the bat with a runner in scoring position in two strikes. Just put the ball in place somewhere and you got a chance. Very frustrating for him, I’m sure. See if the next guy can pick him up. Number 14 in the box with two gone and takes a look at a called strike. That one catches the zone and it’s nothing and two. Perhaps not quite ready to hit. First two pitches by him for a couple of strikes. Now back is against the wall. Going to have to figure something out and figure it out quickly. Backed off the plate that time. Man at second. Out to short. Abrams to third. Tag. Got him. They don’t come much closer than that. Bang bang play to end the inning. So no runs in the inning despite the leadoff walk. And that does it. Last half of the fifth. Coming up, it’s the Rays one and the Nationals nothing. Back here in Nationals Park, John Shabi with my buddy Chris Singleton. It’s set to get us started. Bottom five, Riley Adams. Hower back to work and fouled off looking to get the tying run on base. That one’s in there and it’s 0 and two. Bullpen movement for the Rays. Pete Fairbanks up and throwing. hit hard on the ground to short over to Diaz. One up, one down. Well, he’s doing a nice job of keeping the ball out of the air. Lets the defense work behind him with another ground ball. Good execution. Next to hit for the Nats, Dalon Lyle grounded out his first time. trying to keep good speed off the bases, trying to hold a one-run lead. The Rays leading on the solo homer. Got him swinging for the strikeout. Pulled the string on the change up. He’s locked in at the plate when he’s using the whole field. He was out in front there. Just needs to let the ball travel a little more and his timing will be back on track. Good pitch for the strikeout. So up next, Paul De Young. He’s been a great free agent side. That’s off the mark. And that is ball one. [Music] And that’s downed away. The 20 is in for a strike. [Music] And a foul ball. looking sharp just a strike away from five shutout innings. Two down, nobody on. Next offering misses down and away. Dylan Cruz in the on deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. Battling here as he fouls it away. [Music] Two outs. And a foul ball. He stays alive. [Music] To third. Fair ball. Takes the turn. He’s digging for second. The throw in, but he’s in there easily. Nice and bad right there. Not just the result, but also seeing a lot of pitches made him really work out there on the mound. Nice job keeping it fair as he turned on it down the line and once it got through the infield it was a double all the way. Really important at bat coming up now. So runner at second, two down. Dylan Cruz digging in for the Nationals. struck out swinging his first time and that finds the mark on the outside corner. That’s strike one. That one missed. swing and a miss and a count one and two. Well, if he’s going to do something special right here, it’s going to have to happen with two strikes. [Music] Just missed. That’s a really good take. Next pitch, a slider that misses outside. D Young at second with two down. Foul ball and it remains a full count. So the tying run at second swings and miss has struck him out. A lot of adrenaline. We can see it right there. And sometimes you just got to let it out. That’s an outstanding job of taking that, executing, and getting out of a tough inning. We’re back and they make a change to start the sixth. The new pitcher, Jake Irvin, just trying to keep this one close here. And this is where a bullpin can give their players a chance to fight back into the game. Here’s the third baseman. Junior Camro outfield deep here trying to prevent anything over their heads. Swings and hits one in the air out towards right field. Cruz snags it and there’s one away. Really nice job to get your first out of the ball game. Now batting first baseman Yandi Diaz. So digging in Yandi Diaz. He’s produced the only run of the game with his solo shot earlier. Yeah, the pitching’s been outstanding in this one. So that home run has really been the only big sign of life from either offense. And that one hammered. That’s back. See you later. Another homer. His second home run of the game. And they tack one on the board. It’s two nothing. Singy. That’s his 99th career homer. Well, he’s probably already thinking about the next one. And don’t want to think too hard because you’ll start to struggle. 100 is a really nice number to get to though. Boo. I wasn’t sure he hit that one as hard as he needed to to get it out of here, but it had just enough behind it for the homer. What an attempt at the wall, though. He really gave a terrific effort to try and bring that one back. Lao stands in now and watches strike one. [Music] down to the dirt, swinging a miss, gets to it onto first and it beats him for out number two. That’s a strike out. Third time he struck out in this one and definitely an individual performance you want to flush. He just hasn’t looked very comfortable up there. Just one of those days. But when you’re still winning the ball game, at least you can focus on doing your part to maintain that lead and getting that W. Ripped on a line. Cruz makes the grab and that’s the inning. But the solo shot stretches their lead even further and it’s two zip. Major League Baseball is on the show. And welcome back to the ballpark. Bottom of the six and now up for Washington. Robert Hassel II. Hassel the third and that is downstairs. And that’s ball one. Well, these gnats just aren’t putting great swings on the baseball in this one. Just one extra base hit for them. So they haven’t exactly been hitting the ball gap to gap or out of the park. That makes it really difficult to generate runs. Climb the ladder with that fast ball and it’s one and two. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. Make it four strikeouts for him on the bump today. Definitely made him chase a little bit out of the zone right there. I don’t think that’s a strike if he takes it. Pretty textbook pitching. Get ahead in the count. Get the guy in the box on his heels and then force him to chase your pitch where he doesn’t have much of a chance to do any damage. Now the third baseman, James Wood for two in this one. That one finds the zone. Strike one. Oh, I think the key I mean if he can get through one more inning, anything after that, a hitter or two is bonus, but they should be lined up good enough to get to the finish line. He’s controlling things out there on the mound, not messing around at all. He’s been in attack mode since the very start. That just misses ball one. Well, he’s not afraid to fall into a two- strike count. Knows the strike zone very well. So much so that I think umpires will look at him and determine whether it’s a ball or strike if he swings or not. Lao sends it to first and they’re down to their last out. That’s a huge defensive play in the late stages of the game. It might not be the most challenging we’ve seen today, but it needed to be made. That’s helping your team. Swang at a highfly ball. Well struck back there. That one is gone. He circles the bases. His 18th home run of the season. And they’ve got their first run. It’s 2-1. He absolutely feasts on right-handed pitching and devours that one for a homer. And you can see that’s what he expects of himself at bat after at bat. He’s that confident. took on the big part of the yard for that home run and just barely got it over the wall. I thought for a second he brought it back out there, too. He gave it a great effort, but you know, those plays are so tough to pull off and I’m sure he’d love to have another shot at it. And now Kevin Cash out of the dugout and ready to make a move to the bullpen. Adrien Howser will depart and he leaves in a one-run game. New pitcher coming on. We’ll be back in a minute. So, the closer summon from the bullpen, Pete Fairbanks. Well, the best relievers love the opportunity to come in and protect a tight lead late in the ball game. Some of them are just wired different, so we’ll see what he’s got here. Base is empty with two away. Here’s Josh Bell. This one driven deep center field on its way. Home run. [Applause] They do it again. Backto back homers. His 17th of the year. And we are all tied up. It’s 22. Listen to these fans. This place is absolutely buzzing right now. You can feel the energy all the way up here in our broadcast booth. [Applause] Welcome to the game. First pitch out of the bullpen, a tough one. And you know, he’s just trying to get one in there for a strike. And on the other side is a hitter. It’s a great time to be aggressive and let it fly. It’s not what they were looking for when they turned to him, but now he’s got to find a way to reset. And next will be the cleanup hitter, Luis Garcia. One for two. There’s the strike. Trying to send this to extra innings. swinging a foul straight back. The O2 and that’s outside. Activity in the bullpen. A lefty up and throwing out there. Yeah, that skips in the dirt. [Applause] A healthy cut. Tough pitch at 98. But a really good pass at the ball. [Applause] Two down to now. A screamer into the outfield. No trouble here. Puts it away for the out. And that’ll do it. But two round tripers in this inning. The long ball was working. Two game. You’re dialed into the show. New inning getting started. Here’s the shortstop at the plate. Carson Williams. Man at second, nobody out. And Chris certainly one of the things in his head is trying to get the runner over. Yeah, the way that we see the game played today though, guys are not sacrificing as much just to get that runner across. They’re really looking at doing damage. Slugging is the name of the game. Now batting right looks like it’ll be a pinch hitter Jake Mangum big at bat here so looking for a better matchup with a left-handed bat on the ground to third zips it across and two away to start the seven. Well there’s a lot writing on that at bat right there. Nice job of the pitcher to bear down, make the pitch, get the ground ball. Excellent piece of work. Everson Pereira next to hit for the Rays. In there at the knees. And ball one. Really close pitch down around the knees there. And you could see him asking where it missed. Probably doesn’t agree, but it appears he’s ready to move on to the next pitch. Two down. Go ahead run in scoring position. Got him. And it’s a three up, three down inning. He’s in a tough spot. Had to make a great pitch. Did it. Got the strike out. Gets out of the jam. Clearly, he’s happy with those results. Set for the last half of the seventh. And now the catcher comes up to him. Riley Adams. Adams. [Music] That one’s in there. Going one. Squirts away a little bit. Nothing doing. Count moves to one and one. That’s outside. Two and one. Not really attacking on the mound in this at bat. All breaking balls. So that makes me think they’re not really wanting to challenge him here. Late on that fast ball. I wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball. Try to go again with a fast ball. Slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching up. And it’s filled up. Dalen Lyall in the on deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. [Applause] Man at second ball four. He walked in and that keeps things going. Oh, looking for a swing and miss right there or for the ump to help him out and make a call with that last pitch, but neither happened. Close pitch but a good take to earn that walk. So, a change being made out at second. Coming in as the pinch runner, Jacob Young. He’s a potential winning run. So, they’re hoping he can score in a base hit. Swung on. Belted. That’s back out of here. And that ends the game. Wow. That should get the dugout going. And they walk it off. [Applause] [Applause] Hitting a walk-off homer is the kind of thing you dream about growing up. You’re in the backyard, you’re creating the most pressure-p packed scenario, and what do you do? You come through with the big swing. Well, he was living a childhood moment right there. Nice swing of the bat. Nice win for the team. And your final score 52 for Chris Singleton and our entire crew here at MLB the show. Thanks for stopping by. I’m John Shami. Talk to you soon.
