Welcome to game week, week one of the 2025 NFL season is here. We get uh Eagles Cowboys on Thursday and then we get Chiefs Chargers and Brazil on Friday. Dolphins play at 1:00. So that means we’re going to have to cross over Thursday with locked on Colts this week. Kind of previewing the matchup. Uh this week I am going to go on the record as I do every year for a record prediction uh for the Dolphins. I’ve kind of let the process play out as long as I could. What kind of personnel moves are we making? What’s the trend of those personnel moves? Who’s going to be available? And who’s going to be available is a question that the Dolphins seem to have got another answer for uh on Monday. It was one of the things Mike McDaniel talked about uh during his Monday morning press availability and it was three players did not practice for the Dolphins on Monday was Ethan Bonner cornerback, Jaylen Wright, running back and wide receiver D. Escri the only three players on the Dolphins 53man roster who did not participate in Monday’s practice. That means Devon Achan, who we had not seen since the first joint practice with Detroit, uh, practiced today. That means that Tyreek Hill, who returned at the end of last week, practiced today. That means that Austin Jackson, who returned at the end of the week last week, practiced today. That means that Darren Waller, who I’m not going to sit here and pretend like I know where where the Darren Waller experiment is going to go, right? the vibes aren’t great because he’s not a full participant in the degree in which you know everybody else is and you know you want to treat everybody fairly but not necessarily equally but treating people not equally has been a part of the problem for the Dolphins in more ways than one under the Mike McDaniel era. So like I don’t I don’t really know where Darren Waller’s situation and contributions are going to go. As I reviewed his tape from his time in New York, I would assume it’s going to be a lot of just like sit routes over top of the ball. A lot of basic check down type stuff early and then if he gets calluses on him and he’s he’s able to stay healthy, you know, maybe they’ll build his package throughout the course of the season. But I’d expect some pretty vanilla stuff for for Darren Waller and not the timingoriented body ball on the body on the break type timing throws that this offense has been so centered around. Expect a little bit less of that kind of stuff and just like the more basic passcatching opportunities and holes in zone coverage underneath and then try to let him use his athleticism to create plays. like that. That’s kind of the gut instinct I have on where this Darren Waller situation is going to be at early in the first month of the season or so, assuming he’s out there and participating. But today, Monday, September 1st, marks the first time in the Dolphins entire offseason program that those four names have all been on the practice field and participating at the same time. So that can be a bad thing, but it can also be a good thing. And and I would much rather take that alternative that hey, Waller, Tyreek Hill, Austin Jackson, Devon Achan, they all practice the Monday of week one. I would take that alternative as compared to, hey, one of those guys is out for a month and another one was out for the season, right? like and that’s in a perfect world everybody would stay healthy but as we know especially for these Dolphins and some of the challenges that they’ve presented us as fans the last couple years it’s not a perfect world we don’t live in a perfect world so I will take the progress of achan’s on the board Tyreek Hill’s on the board your starting right tackles back in the fray which means your offensive line depth’s looking a little bit more sturdy because Larry Borham’s back to being a backup tackle and then you also have Kendall Lamb in the fray Darren Waller I don’t know. I got some high hopes for Greg Dolich, but he’s going to be drinking water through a fire hose right now getting into this offense with what this position room does. And they’re not going to be able to elevate him anyway, at least the first couple weeks of the season, unless they make a roster transaction move and put somebody else on a reserve list because you can only elevate two practice squad players in any given week up to the active roster. We knew we know their strategy at kicker is they’re going to be elevating Riley Patterson for the first three weeks off the practice squad and then they’ll evaluate and see as it goes. And then with Jaylen Wright not being an active participant in practice and Mike McDaniel last week said week one’s probably too ambitious of an ask for Jaylen Wright. Devon Han being back becomes that much more important and huge for you beyond what he does in the passing game and as a speed runner to the perimeter and the trickle down effect of all the different ways that can affect your linebackers and how urgent they are to fly out of there and the spacing of everything and and when he’s not touching the ball he’s got a gravitational pull as a player but then it’s Devon Chan and Ali Gordon those are the two active backs on the 53 which means Jeff Wilson who’s we’re very famili familiar with is going to be elevated and serve as the third running back on game day. So, we won’t see Greg Doulich minus the opportunity to to move the puzzle pieces around with the 53. So, um, the fact that we have Darren Waller as a potential asset to implement, even if it’s not the optimized version or the process happened late, so it’s going to be a slow start, whatever that looks like, I’ll take it because this is the first time all of those players in addition to James Daniels coming off an Achilles repair, uh, to a tongue of Aloa, Jaylen Wadd, like you have your pieces offensively. Got Patrick Paul, big Pat Paul, you got team captain Aon Brewer. We’re going to get into captains next here on the show. Um, six in total, down two from last year. How many of them are repeat captains from last season? Who’s still on the team that was a captain last season? Uh, who was on the team and a captain last season who’s not a captain anymore? There’s there’s some stuff to get into here. We’re going to get into that next here on Locked on Dolphins. So, make sure you guys stick with us. Three of them are repeats from the 2024 season to a tongue of Aloa, Aram Brewer, Alec Engel, Zack Cer, Jordan Brooks, Bradley Chub. Tip of the cap to that group of six who will serve as the Dolphins leadership core for the 2025 season. Now, last year’s team had eight captains, and it’s kind of a varying degree of reasons why the non-re repeat captains aren’t repeats. You have three that were captains last year. Two, a tongue, Alec Engold, and Zack Cer. Last year’s captains also included Kus Campbell who left in free agency to go back I guess I guess Miami was home because he played at the University of Miami but he got drafted to Arizona and he went back to Arizona. Miami was interested but not at the price point that Arizona signs. It was a modest deal to begin with. So you could kind of tell they wanted the the to go lean into the youth movement. So Kas Campbell was here. outstanding person, outstanding player, outstanding leader for the Dolphins last year. Tron Armstead, who retired as a captain last year, obviously no longer here. He retired in April. David Long Jr., who didn’t make it to November, I think he definitely didn’t make it to Thanksgiving with the Dolphins last year as a team captain. Uh, I know that was a controversial uh, decision for some players in the locker room was moving on from David who was voted as a team captain, but and I don’t I don’t know the circumstances for for David Long and how his season played out last year, but his last two games in Miami were amongst the worst linebacker film that I can remember watching. I mean, the the Arizona game, take whatever player performance stands out to you from 2024 as a bad single game performance. It could be Jackson Carman at right tackle against Houston. And in the grading that I did of every player for every game that the team played last year, David Long’s performance against Arizona was as bad as Jackson Carman’s game against Houston. And that was it. And it was kind of like pulling teeth from the very beginning. So I don’t know what it was about this scheme or what it was about David or what it was about the rest of the group and conflict. I don’t know. But he was the team captain that was cut midway through the year last year. And then Jaylen Ramsay, who we’ve heard plenty of insight on Jaylen Ramsay and what Jaylen Ramsey was and was not for the Dolphins and what they needed him to be and what they need their leaders to be and the conflict of interest that that seemed to exist there. So you have two good and two bad. And then you have Tyreek Hill who was a captain in Miami for each of his first three seasons. Tyreek Hill of the five captains last year who aren’t captains is the only player that is back with the team. And there’s a whole big the big pushing questions to Mike McDaniel about it. There was a big series of questions to other players like Bradley Chub I saw was asked about it in the postpractice press availabilities. Mike McDaniel said it was more who we chose to pick and who we had as compared to who we didn’t. Um, I can’t imagine living in a world where even if the Dolphins had eight captains again this year like they did last year that Tyreek Hill would be amongst them and I think to a tongue of Aloa kind of told you that at the beginning of the the training camp when he had the comments that were very frank and honest and Tyreek Hill came out and said, you know, to his right to say that and know I’m working on myself and Tua continues to be asked. He says, yeah, we’re we’re continuing to work on it. We’re we’re different people and it’s a test for Tyreek Hill for sure because there’s nothing Tyreek Hill thrives on more than being a part of the conversation and now he’s being a part of the conversation with this team and this leadership team in a way in which he’s reduced or he’s not serving as a team captain in Miami. Uh I don’t think it should be a surprise to anybody uh with what you heard about the practice attendance and the timeliness to meetings and the FAB five of fines um or five players per the athletic were responsible for half the team’s fines for violations in player conduct. And it’s probably correctly assumed that Tyreek Hill was amongst to that group of five. and um what other players were a part of that that are no longer here is up for speculation. I I don’t want to be recklessly speculating on guys like that, but uh the transparency that’s existed with Tyreek Hill should not leave a lot of questions. So, a quarter of your captains were players that you had a lot of conflict with last year. It’s not a very good representation of leadership within the locker room. So, you take that and I apply it to this year’s group. I think about Tua and and you could say all kinds of things about Tua, good or bad. One thing I will never question is his investment in playing the game of football, right? There’s people everybody wants to tell Tyreek Hill to retire or to to tell Tua Tongue Aloa to retire for his health purposes. And Tua’s steadfast know I know what the risks are. I embrace the risks. I love the game. I want to play the game. And a guy whose body is not necessarily optimally built to play it because he has the durability things that he’s had in his career thus far and is still willing to embrace the risk and go out and do that. Guy loves ball, right? Like there there should you can question all kinds of things about Tui. You should never question if Tua Tongal loves football or not. It’s kind of guy I want as a captain in my locker room now. I want him to make better decisions and protect himself better so he can be out there and be a captain for my team for 17 games for sure. I think about the two new ads from last year’s team. Getting Jordan Brooks and Aon Brewer and both of those guys in year two being more familiar with the system, being more familiar with the locker room, being in a place to have they’re in the primes of their career, being a place to have a louder voice. That’s two really nice hits for the Dolphins. Now, this time last year, we probably would have said a lot of the same stuff about David Long, so nothing’s guaranteed, but I look at it from what those players were for the Dolphins last year. You look at their age, you look at how they’ve conducted themselves, and it it juices me up a little. It’s a it’s a reason for optimism. I think that two 27year-old free agents who signed three-year contracts with the team in 24 both played so well and both have the right temperature and our tone setters in your room in the way that you want to be that they got recognized this year as secondyear Dolphins as captains. I think you you can find a lot to to applaud there. It doesn’t guarantee all the success in the world, but it’s something that that I appreciate for sure. Bradley Chub, first time he’s been a captain for the Dolphins. He was a captain in Denver after being a top 10 draft choice. Of course, he got traded to Miami mid2022 season. So, like, we’re not going to put a C on your chest when you get here at the trade deadline. And then he missed all 24. Alec Engold, repeat captain, serves as your special teams representation here. than Zack Celler. Like Zack Celler broke the offseason blockade of big money contract extensions with multi multiple years because he embodies everything that you want as a professional and a leader and a player who leads by example and plays at a high level and has developed his game here in Miami and bought in, etc. I think it’s a really nice melting pot of faces that are newer, your quarterback, u a guy in Alec Engold who’s an outstanding person, community presence, uh, and then Bradley Chub. If I was going to add an additional name to either side of the ball, if we were going to go up to eight again this year, I think my fourth captain, I’m using fourth air quotes because you could include gold and just say, well, he’s a special teams captain. I think my next offensive captain would probably be Austin Jackson, whose value was apparent after last year. um who has been through it and went through the hardship of being a first round pick that was raw and a lot of instability with the offensive line coach and a lot of bad offensive schemes that asked and play with a lot of time under tension and everybody myself included you know I had somebody who asked like what are a couple of things that you were wrong about that that you would want to talk about the writing off Austin Jackson is certainly on that list it’s a testament to strength player strengths and traits and getting the right system in place to optimize a player’s ability. But I think Austin Jackson, who’s been through it and seen a lot and seen a lot of hardship and come out the other side of it and now coming through some more hardship, but his value never more apparent for what he does for your run game, would probably be my next name there. Defensively, you could make a really strong case for Jaylen Phillips. Now, I think Minka Fitzpatrick was brought into the Dolphins defense to be a leader, but as a firstear player, I think that’s probably something that you you maybe want to wait a little bit on. And and Ma kind of talked about earning the trust of his teammates, earning the respect of his teammates, uh earning a a new contract extension in Miami when he finally spoke to the media. Those were things he talked about. So, I don’t view it as a slight to Minka, but Minka, I think, would have a strong case if you were going to have another defensive captain to be on that list. Now, we have some odds and ends to get into. We’re going to get in that next here. Locked on Dolphins. Make sure you guys stick with us. That’s 50% off your first year at monarchmoney.com with code locked on NFL. First odd and end is an odd one. It’s a number change where where we two defensive back seven players who have apparently flip-flop numbers. So don’t get crossed up when the Dolphins are playing the Colts and you see number 25 making a tackle and you think it’s Dante Trader. It’s not Dante Trader anymore. It’s Tyrell Dodson. So Tyrell Dodson is now number 25. He wore 11. He picked up David Long’s number last year. He came in wore through camp. Now he’s number 25. And as a result, Dante Trader, the fifth round rookie safety out of Maryland, uh, who practiced today, which I didn’t even put that together just now, but like I’ve been really intrigued by who and what Dante Trader is based off how some of the coaches, whether that’s the special teams coach Craig Aerman, or whether that’s Anthony Weaver, the defensive coordinator, have talked about him. Sometimes like unprompted they’ve brought up Dante Trey. So, like I really want to know like, okay, what kind of juice do we have here? What goes with this enthusiasm that these coaches apparently have? He’s now wearing number 11. So, if you see number 11 out there, don’t get mad at Tyrell Dodson. Just like if you see 25 out there and something not good happens, don’t get mad at Dante Trader. Number change first week of the regular season. Now, we also have a practice squad flip-flop, and I’m excited about this one. Isaiah Johnson originally made the 53man roster. Then he was cut as the Dolphins kind of juggled through some names and then they they bring in Kendall Lamb and they’re awarded Juju Brent off of the waiver wire. Johnson gets cut. Him and Adrian and Jordan Colbert are the two that that get dropped off what was the Tuesday deadline 53. Colbert got put back on the practice squad over the weekend officially when they had one spot left, which meant the Dolphins had 16 players and Isaiah Johnson didn’t have a spot. Well, as of this morning, the team formally announced that BJ Adams, the undrafted rookie out of UCF, was released from the practice squad, and Isaiah Johnson has taken his place, to which I say, outstanding. I I we didn’t see like the year 2 leap from Isaiah Johnson. I was surprised he made the original 53. Maybe some of that was just protection for what they would or would not get on the waiver wire and they if they weren’t going to get guys off the waiver wire then they wanted guys that had played in the system. Um but Isaiah Johnson has some really attractive tools and you saw some this preseason like a little bit of smattering of opportunities at safety for him some cross training. So odds are if you’re on the practice squad for two full seasons the odds are pretty long you’re going to materialize into a meaningful player at least for that team. Uh, so we’ll see if Isaiah Johnson gets another opportunity at any point throughout the course of the 2025 season to step up and get put onto the 53 and what he would do with that if he gets it. But, uh, just some juggling of the backend stuff and some administrative stuff with some number changes. But the big takeaways here, uh, team captains, three out of eight, less than 50% of team captains retain only half of them are back. I think that’s a great embodiment of the Dolphins and their roster and kind of the lack of long-term stability the group had in general with the one-year stop gap contracts and then Devon Chan and his return and getting a group of four guys that are important guys to your offense all on offense. So, when you consider some of your joint practice reports and Dolphins don’t have anything going and well, Tyreek Hill’s not out there and Devon Aan’s not out there and Austin Jackson’s not out there and Darren Waller’s not, it’s like, yeah, it’s you’re pushing 50% of the offensive lineups not out there. Well, it appears as though the Dolphins are are putting that behind them. Mike McDaniel did say he expects Devon Han to play in week one. Uh, and when you review the injured reserve list, players that are on injured reserve on the offensive side of the football, it’s a bunch of off the street free agent tackles like Abena Ezn Kaj, Germaine Afetti, undrafted free agent, rookie tight end Jaylen Conjurs, Andrew Meyer as a secondyear player. That hurts your offensive line depth a little bit. And then Alexander Madison as your third running back. that spot now being taken by presumably Ali Gordon and then Jeff Wilson kind of stepping in his place. So the downgrade from Madison uh to Jeff Wilson if you believe that as a drop off all things considered. It seems like we’re going to be full full send on the offensive side of the ball. Uh the defensive side of the ball is really where the big hits happened with Cam Smith not taking another step forward uh and landing on NFI and then obviously Kater Kohu and Ry Burns as two guys that probably would have been meaningful contributors to the quarterback room. So full send on offensive side of the ball. Looks like we’re going to have everybody all hands on deck at least as far as guys that you would expect to take snaps if you were going to turn injuries off on a game of bat for the offense. That’s going to do it for us here today on the show. Kyle Krabs, keep it locked in right here on Locked on Dolphins. is your team every day. Appreciate you guys as always for checking out the show. Phins up
Go fins!
The reason Bonner didn't get drafted is that he was always injured in college
Go to see your crabbs!! Excited for Sunday
Let's go Dolphins 🐬 305
Getting a little Aggravated at the TE situation. It’s been ongoing for whatever reason for several seasons. If we could simply get a solid guy a TE can be a great security blanket for a QB as we all well know. This would be yet another tool in Tuas belt. I may be naive or too hard on the brain trust but is it that tough to find a solid TE? I know, I know. Managing in today’s nfl is like playing whack a mole on hardest setting, but as a fan I have my rights to moan a little. Lol
Also: 16 caps??? We always only had 3 plus one honorary on any team I was ever involved with. In the immortal phrase uttered by Artie Johnson “Verrry Interesssting”. This should b lost on 99% of the audience. 😉
FINS UP!!
thx kfc! you da man among boys! when speaking football iq!
The optics on Cam Smith’s continued rostering by Chris Greier looks like favoritism. I believe it was reported by beat writers that Cam was the college roommate of Greier’s son.
Is Tyreek not being named captain news worthy? I’m targeting him in fantasy
You opened my eyes regarding the poor leadership of some of the '24 captains. No wonder this team didn't go anywhere last year. Wow. This year's slate is much better.
I'm just an ordinary fan and don't rewatch games isolating on individual players but what I saw of Cornell Armstrong did not impress. I'm a little surprised they kept him over the potential of BJ Adams. Did you see anything out of Cornell?
After an training camp loaded with injuries it is good to hear that the current 53 is trending toward healthier…
Glad to see Achane recovering and already back to practice!⛑🏈🏆
Thanks Kyle 👊 LFG 🐬
I’m glad you spoke about other players who rise to consideration for leadership – Minkah, JP and AJ. All of them, for different reasons, are worthy. The one who will probably be hurt most will be Tyreek, but as much as he plays pretty hard, his maturity is really the part that hurts him the most. Christian Wilkins was and is goofy but he’s also deadly serious in his approach. Some of these guys just stand out and others demonstrate a seriousness of purpose and seem good roster folks. I feel really good, even if I was hoping BJ Adams would rise to the occasion. Maybe he’ll be back next offseason. We’ll see.
Trade 2026 1st all 3 5th's and both 7th's for Robert Hunt
Trade Tyreek to Washington for Laremy Tunsil
I Like our wr's with him or without him we can get better on the Oline
"Tua loves ball" Gotta disagree with you on this one. I'm sure he likes playing the game but it is very clear he's trying to make wealth for his entire family. He has put himself way after their future. How much of that is pressure from his family from people like his father who knows but I don't think this is a "for the love of the game" case as much of a "for the love of his family for the next hundreds of years" case.
Good to see Tyreek not a captain. It's the right thing to do!!! 😎
You're a Captain, and you're a Captain, and you're a Captain…
I’m going to speculate and say, we have all these guys that all of a sudden are healthy. It looks like players are avoiding practicing in this Florida heat. Which imo, causes injuries.
I’m glad they’re back, but I hope the Armstead treatment didn’t spread to a bunch of other players.
