Johan Oviedo Strikes Out Six in Win | Blue Jays vs. Pirates Game Highlights (8/20/25)

A little over two weeks ago, Johan Odo coming off Tommy John’s surgery. Missed all of last year. Had a setback in spring training. Had that lat injury. Really a lot of promise, a lot of hope for this year. U I don’t know if it was a setback, but he threw too many pitches in just one inning. Pirates sent him down to get built back up and now he returns to the big leagues. Be keeping an eye on how crisp he looks and trying to hit spots and seeing the tilt on that slider in comparison to before he got injured. Springer with his 20th home run yesterday, hitting at 292. This one is hit hard to deep left field. Will it stay fair? It will. And George Springer leads off the ball game with a home run. How about that swing from George Springer? 355 ft just around that left field foul pole. Didn’t didn’t get all of it. He was jammed by that slider. A little spinner on the inner third, but he got just enough of it to give the Blue Jays a one- nothing lead here with nobody out in the first. What a way to get the ball game started. So, two men gone. Alejandro Kirk homered yesterday. Two-2 swing and a miss. Struck him out. Fast ball. So, Ovido finishes up his first inning today with a strikeout, but gives up the home run to Springer. This is an important start for Chris Basset. He struggled a little bit with command over his last three starts. nine walks in those three starts. He’s three and six with a 6.39 RA on the road as well. So, you really want to lock in. You really want to pound that strike zone, especially against this Pirates offense. The Pirates are 30th in baseball in team home runs. Strike three called on the outside corner for out number one. Strike three called. So, two outs. Here’s Brian Reynolds. Little flick of the wrist and Reynolds into second base with a two-out double. 3-1 pitch. Horwitz takes outside ball four. That sinker ran well off the plate. Two on with two outs. And Tommy Fam will come to bat. Tommy Fam and uh Tyler Heinman involved in a chirping match on Monday after he drew the walk and did the bat flip. Was not in the lineup yesterday. Base hit would tie this ball game. the pitch hit hard up third. Fair ball and that’s how you answer. You throw it in the left field corner that scores Reynolds easily. Horowitz is going to try to score and the relay is laid and offline. Horitz is in. It’s a two out. Two-run double for Tommy Fam. And the Pirates grab the lead two to one. Fam’s got to feel pretty good right now after everything we were talking about. If you got a problem with the other team, this is a best way to get revenge. two out double to knock in a couple and uh give the Buckos the lead. And this one is punched out to short, but running toward the ball and making the backhanded stab was Bo Bashette to record the final out and get the Jays out of the inning, but they give up two and they now trail 2-1 as we head to the second inning. So, two quick outs for the Blue Jays and the Pirates could use some length from their starting pitchers. They’re averaging the fewest innings per start in baseball this month. Good change up. Swung out and missed. Third strike out for Oto. A one, two, three second. Let’s go to the bottom of the third with the top of the order coming up. 02 pitch. Strike three. Another strikeout looking. Simon sits down. Basset with his fourth K. One away. The two pitch coming to Gonzalez. Basset fires. Swinging a miss. Another strike out of a Gonzalez. So just as he started the game in the first, Basset strikes out Simon then strikes out Gonzalez. Two away and this is where he ran into trouble in the first. Hopefully he can get out of it here in the third. Now the two-2 strike three call and Chris Basset just struck out the side. Fourth inning coming up and Toronto will bat with the Pirates in the lead two to one. Bo Bette will start things in the air to left field. Fam going back and it’s over his head and will skip up over the wall and that’ll be an automatic double for Bett to begin the top of the fourth and he gets the strike out of Kirk. It’s number four for ObiO. So that leadoff double by Bette still there with two away for Ty France that hit him. Got him on the right arm. No doubt about that one. France will take off the shin guard and the elbow pad. And Jose Minestra, the head athletic trainer, is out to see if France is okay. But it looks like France is saying he’s fine. And he is on his way down to first. Full count. Runners will be in motion with two outs. 3-2 coming. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. The slider in the zone and Lucas swings through it. Fifth inning coming up from PNC Park. Two to one. The Pirates on top. Oedto has allowed two hits. He has struck out five. Sugar is still available and warmed if needed in the Pirates pen. 64 pitches. This is 65th. We figured probably be somewhere between 65 and 80. Fly ball out center and Sinsky drifting back just shy of the warning track. One out. Here’s a 1-1 swinging a fly ball softly hit into medium shallow left field for Tommy Fam who will retire it for the second out. Two better gone and back to the top for Springer. And it’s two-1 game here in the fifth. Oh, what a way to finish. How sweet it is. Welcome back, Johan Oedo. Five strong and he’ll leave likely leading two to one. Pirates have the bases loaded here and Pete Walker is coming out to chat. Big opportunity right now for Spencer Horowitz against his former team. Lines this one to left center field. It will be Davis Schneider to make the catch and Basset gets out of it without the Pirates scoring. Basset hasn’t struck out 11 or more in a game since September of 2023. A ground single to center field for Triolo. Basset immediately looked at the dugout and kind of opened his glove like I’m okay. Stay there. Uh-oh. It looks like his manager doesn’t think so. That didn’t Basset’s a fiery guy, too. He’s not going to like this if he actually did. I mean, that ball didn’t even hadn’t even left the infield yet. and he looked at gave the open glove saying I’m fine. Do you think he’ll talk Schneider out of it? No, I don’t think so. It looks like the pitcher’s coming out of the tough to talk him out of it when the guy’s jogging in. So, five and two/3, two runs allowed. The runner at first his responsibility 10 strikeouts and here’s Fiser. One, two, got a piece of him. So, it’s first and second and Pagarero will come up. Swinging a miss. He got him and ends the inning. The Pirates leave a couple of men on and it’s still a one-run game. So now the Pirates have runners on the corners and a little two out rally going. John Schneider is the manager of the Blue Jays and he’s going to walk out to the mound and doesn’t want the lefty to face the right-handed batting Tommy Fam. So a pitching change here. Toronto exchanging arms. It will be Sir Anthony Dominguez coming out of the bullpen for the Blue Jays. His specialty is getting right-handed batters out and that’s what he will try to do. Two- two pitch. Bouncer to short. The shed across the diamond to France in time for the out and Dominguez gets a very big out to keep this at a one-run game. Three outs to get. This will not be easy. Dennis Santana made it look easy though on Monday. Quick work. What? Eight pitches I think on Monday night. That save ahead 02. The pitch. Strength three call. Fast ball on the outer edge. One out and Santana just picked him apart. Eyeball deep right center field and the catch is made by Alexander Canario. Canario coming into the game last inning makes a terrific play up against the wall. Leaps up, hits the wall. Now one out to secure the victory. Don Kelly pointing out how much better Canaro’s gotten defensively. And a fly ball to center field. Look at this raise the jolly Roger. The Pirates take the series and they limit the Blue Jays to three hits. Johan Oedo gets the

The Pittsburgh Pirates defeated the Toronto Blue Jays 2-1 at PNC Park on August 20, 2025. Johan Oviedo struck out six in five innings to pick up his first win in over a calendar year, while Tommy Pham drove in two runs.

  1. They got the win, but I think I counted 5, count them, FIVE, Pirates that LOOKED at strike 3. This season may have been over for a long time for the Pirates, but this is an ongoing disciplinary issue that needs to be addressed. We stink because batters are not playing smart. There is no excuse for not swinging at anything remotely near the strike zone when you have 2 strikes on you.
