Lamar Odom: “NBA teams are stupid. They give the ball to their best player & put him in a pick n roll. That player often handles the ball almost to the shot clock at the end. Then he passes the ball to a player that’s not as good as him. He has to take or make a shot in less time than he’d the ball

  1. Lamelo ball, except he’s usually taking a 30ft step back 3, or giving a g league caliber player a grenade.

  2. Am I missing something or is this incredibly dumb ? The best players are almost always doubled, you are usually getting really good look(In the least a better look) look by passing out.

  3. No team or player is intentionally draining the shot clock in the half court. And if they are it’s because the defense is blowing up their sets and the guard has to improvise.

Lamar should know better considering how good he was as a ball mover and defender in his career.

  4. Maybe this is true for a couple teams like Harden rockets and some iterations of Luka in dallas but it is really not correct outside of that

  5. I mean he‘s literally right – NBA teams don’t run systems like they do in college because it’s not what sells. Your team needs a ”face” or something marketable. Euro teams run schemes and plays, and they can compete on an NBA level without having the same amount of individual talent. Team ball wins, but it’s not flashy. It also relies on having evenly spread out talent rather than 1-2 stars and role players, another quality which NBA teams don’t have.

The Pacers are one of the only teams in the NBA that don’t rely on their superstar, and that’s because he‘s a pass-first star*. The Warriors also come to mind.

  6. Disregarding the fact that this statement is false, how is it any different to dumping the ball down to a big who spends 15 trying to back down their man or an isolationist sitting on the wing for 8 seconds before commiting to a move.

I’ve realized that coaches and gm’s are by far and away the least respected groups in the basketball world. Like do people not recognize that these peoples jobs are dependant on how many basketball games they can win? Do yall just think they sit on their hands all year just to tell their best player to go get a bucket every possession?

If something looks to simple your eyes are likely the problem.

  7. Not sure what is the point he’s making but I’ll assume he’s saying when the best player on the team defers at the last minute, the person who is getting the ball on his team has much more difficult situation to make a shot. Which is 100% true. Some will argue, most of the time you’re open. Yeah sometimes, doesn’t take any pressure off though. Players on teams that do not have ball movement and relies on the best player to dance around and then give them the ball last minute, some players don’t do well. Some players are not pure spot up shooters. They need to touch the ball, get into a rhythm and get the dust off and be able to get a feel for the game instead of just standing there all day getting cold waiting for the ball and then you get it at the last minute with defense draping all over you. And if teams do not recognize this, they are stupid.

  8. Lmao your boy thought about this when he was high and thought it was so profound.

Why doesn’t the best player with more time shoot the ball then? Is he stupid?

  9. I remember someone talking shit on dominique wilkins throwing you the rock with 3 on the shotty and just saying good luck basically

  10. I love my Celtics but this them every fucking time…. Granted they have or had better players so make that shot but still……

  11. He played under Phil Jackson so I get why he feels this way but his situation was kind of unique. For most teams that’s the best and smart way to play

  12. Do not agree at all. Every single team is running double drags, pistol, Chicago action, wide pin, Gortat screen etc and if you cannot read the floor at all you just won’t get good minutes.

Why is the best player running the play? Because they’re so good sometimes no matter what coverage you throw at them they’d always find an answer. And “role players” is self-explanatory, they play roles, they shoot, they screen, they rim run.

He’s saying it like he’s dropping some bombs bruh not every team needs to run sets to be successful

  13. This is inarguably correct but since it’s an older player saying something negative about the current game it will be immediately dismissed.

  14. That’s bad offense if you’re giving role players grenades at the end of the shot clock. Good teams get into action quickly and maximize their role players

  15. I don’t really like this analysis. The player they kick to may not be better, but they might be open and a better “open” shooter than the #1 option.

  16. This very rarely happens in reality lol the best player usually finds a way to get a shot off

  17. So what is his solution? Run a whole bunch of plays that might not work or result in a turnover because it’s a high pressure situation. Same with not giving the ball to the best player. They’ll freeze, turn it over, get trapped and dunno what to do with it, call a timeout when there is no timeout left aka the Chris Webber move)?

  18. Odom is right about that playstyle being “stupid” — but it’s not what today’s NBA looks like. He is literally describing the era of a basketball that he played in. The modern game is almost the opposite, considering of motion, early offense, pace and space, and multiple actions that stress the defense. All the analytics support this as well.

  19. Feels like he’s taking a shot at the Lakers & LeBron and in that regard he’s 100% accurate

  20. This is why teams have multiple good players and shooters around the perimeter. Not many teams are playing the shot clock all the way to zero. Teams are scoring more points than ever so what does that say about the 3rd and 4th best players on these teams? They get buckets
