Mets vs. Nationals Game Highlights (8/21/25) | MLB Highlights
The Mets all of a sudden are a banged up ball club with Francisco Alvarez already out with a sprained thumb. Last night, Brandon NMO left the game with a stiff neck. Luis Torren got banged on the catching hand last night. Hayden Sanger will catch in his place. And now it’s been revealed that Jeff McNeel for the last week has been dealing with a sore shoulder. McKenzie Gore has the same issue that Kodi Sena has. He has trouble with the first batter of the game. First batters against him this year are 11 for 23 with a 520 on base percentage. Francisco Lindor eight-game hitting streak batting 485 in the streak. He drives this one to deep left field headed toward the wall and it’s out of here. And with that, Francisco Lendor has a new Mets club record with his eighth leadoff home run of the season. Three pitches in and it’s one- nothing New York. And Gora’s first batter problems continue. Lindor taking full advantage to give the Mets the quick lead. Little cutter that didn’t cut much and Lindor all over it. Sodto three for 12 against him with a homer. But Gore struck him out six times. Pitch swing and a miss. Got him on a curveball. So Gore strikes out Sodto for the seventh time in career matchups. Swing and a miss. That was a diving curve ball. And Gore with back-to-back strikeouts. Here’s Pete Alonzo. Oh, the Mets alltime home run hitter. Oh, strike three and a breaking ball. And Alonzo knows he’s been had on that one. Strike two, not so much. Homer, threeks. The left-hander from Valparezo, Indiana. Shawn Mania on the mound. Andre Chaparo standing in. And he goes to the sweeper to strike out Chaparo. Sanger makes the toss to first. And there’s the third strike out of the first four batters for Shawn Maniah. Swing and a miss. And Adams is down on strikes and Mania off to a hot start. and he’s fed four of the first five. Mania looks sharp. Dylan three for six and get him looking at a fast ball and Mania strikes out the side in the second inning. Keny Gore had 42 pitches through two innings. He has five strikeouts. Juan Sto struck out his first time up. Sodto to center. Jacob Young. Not a problem. There’s a wind blowing in out of the northeast today and that might have been what prevented that ball from going out of the ballpark. Two out and nobody on now. Starling Marte. Marte struck out his first tom up. Fly ball deep center field off the bat of Marte near the wall. It’s out of here. Stling Marte goes the other way for his seventh home run of the year. The Mets second home run of the day and it’s two nothing New York. And Marte just continues to hammer the baseball using the opposite field. Brett Batty struck out his first time up. Batting with one out and nobody on. up the middle and Batty’s got another base hit. Brett Batty just keeps on raking. Here’s Tyrone Taylor getting the start in left field. He fly to the warning track in right center. First time up. Taylor takes inside. Ball four. Another good turn at bat for Taylor. He doesn’t get off the bench for more than two weeks and he puts together two quality at bats in a row. A consmate professional. And Cedric hooks one out of right field for a base hit. Batty to third. He’ll be held up there by Mike Sarbaugh. So Mullins comes through with the base hit to load up the bases. So now Hayden Sanger bats with the bases loaded. Sanger came up with two out and two on the second and struck out. And he gets one in the air to right center. That’ll get the run in. Back goes Young tagging at third. Batty. He’ll come in to score. Hayden Sanger has his first major league RBI and the Mets have a three nothing lead. Nicely done by Sanger to get the run home. And the Mets now lead by the score of three to nothing. That’s fair down the line. House with the backhand. He’ll just bounce it over there. And it’s so far off the back. Japaro went and got it and make the tag. Bottom of the fourth. Time to make some noise for the Nets offensively. Abrams to Young Chaparo. And a swing and a miss on a ball that gets away and Abrams is safe at first base. But the Nets get a leadoff gift here in the fourth. First time they’ve had their first batter on. Jabaro up the middle for a base hit. CJ reads it. He will stop and the Nats have somebody in scoring position for the second time. Oh, nowhere to go. And that breaking ball leaves Riley Adams heading down to first. Shamana is going to have to get through getting out of a jam like this without a big inning. So now Dylan Cruz, who’s been a big thorn in the bedside this year, right up the middle near the bag and fortunately Batty couldn’t step on second base. So a run scores. Dylan Cruz will get his 19th RBI. Mets three, Nationals one. Brady House will lead off the bottom of the fifth. The 01 swing a ground ball. Base it up the middle. So Brady House been one for his previous 12 over four games is two for two. And that bunt’s going to hop in front of Allonzo. He’s going to go to second anyway. Safe is the call. Well, that’s a mistake with a two-run lead. And so the Mets do not get an out on the Jacob Young bun attempt. Overly aggressive there. Oh my. That is right in the middle of his upper back. It appeared to up around the shoulder. Second hit batter of the day. It gets Abrams and loads the bases for Paul de Young. Right now he’s on the third longest hitting streak of his career at nine games. A breaking ball. He reached out and got it. Mullins in at third. Ready House throw comes in. Cut off by Pete Alonzo. The Nets are clawing back and it’s three to2. Jabaro base hit up the middle last time. Andre will calmly take it outside. The Nets have one hit in this inning. And that’s going to be it for Manaya. Mets call on Tyler Rogers to put out the fire in this bottom of the fifth inning. Bases loaded, two outs. He’ll face Riley Adams. Take advantage of it. Get a big two- out hit here. The one delivery swing a line drive center field that’s down for a base hit. Young scores. Abrams trying to score. Mullins throws cut off the throw to third. Chaparo’s hung up. Nationals will have the lead as Chaparo. They chase him toward third with Batty flipping to Alonzo will tag him out. The inning over, but the Nationals lead four to three. Clutch. Two out. Two-run single for Riley Adams. And the Nationals have the first lead in the game. They were down three nothing after three and a half. Here’s Dalen Lyle, a lefty. And it’s cleanly up the middle by Dalen Lyle. Second hit in six at bats in the series. And he’s on for the third time. He’s on the move. Swinging a miss. Throw to the third base side and safe is the call and the Mets will not challenge. So it is a successful steal. Jacob a swinging strike out. A buntfielders choice up the middle. Ball falling and it’s on the ground off the glove of Mullins. Lyle home. The Nets with some more two out lightning and it’s a two-1 lead. Henry a 360 RA. It’s appearance number 49. He’s one and one with a save. Mets have not had a hit since the fourth inning. Top spin on that one. Two hops. Brady House. And in this series, Wanoto and Pete Alonzo are two for 23. Ventos one for three. And that’s wide. Ball four. And the Mets finally have a base runner against the Washington bullpen. The seventh walk given up by Washington pitching today. But the first base runner for the Mets since the fifth. swing, a foul tip, and a strikeout. Two down here in the eighth. Boy, right down the pie. Boy, he had a good cut just under him. And so now Jeff McNeel not going to pinch run, but pinch hit for Tyrone Taylor. Ferrer fires. Fast strike three called at 99 mph. McNeel heads to the bench. Ferrer blew him away. Nets playing their final game at Nationals Park this year and in danger of dropping a series to the Nats with the last place team in the National League East. Lost 15 of their last 20. Here’s Ryan Stanick. Bottom of the eighth and he gets Adams Cruz and Ly. That’s another base hit for Riley Adams. But Adams is on with his second in. He’s been on three times. Adams does not run. The pitch is low. Ball four. or he threw him a 3-2 slider and Dylan Cruz as he did last night dug himself out of an 02 hole to draw a walk. This will be a good test for Brady. He’s gone two for three today. A single and a double. Two two and a base hit the other way. Adams held up. Ricky Gutierrez sends him with a ball getting into right center. And again today the kids are all right. Ryan Stannock gives up a late run and these Nationals pesky pesky hitting late in the game when the Mets are not. Another two out of the inning. I think it’s back up for James Wood. Now he bats with first and third and two out. A run home here in the bottom of the eighth. James Wood roasting one to left. How far see you later? James Wood puts the hammer down with a three-run homer. And the Nets with a 4-1 eighth inning, lead it nine-3. And unless they can rally in the ninth inning, they’ll see their lead for the last wildard spot shrink to a half a game over the Cincinnati Reds who are off today. A nightmare bottom of the eighth for the Mets. Jose Ferrer, who got the last out of the eighth, faces Cedric Mullins to start the ninth. In on the hands. Get over said Riley Anders. Jose did, but Chaparo takes care of it. One down now. Hayden Sanger and Singer goes down swinging. Two men down. Second strike out for Pere and the Mets are down to their final out. So now Sodto is 0 for four today. Swing and a miss. And the series ends on a high note and the Nets take two out of three in the series. Nets let a three nothing lead. Get away. The Nationals score nine unanswered runs, win 9 to3.

What do you know. A save from a 6 run blowout! Maybe didn't score early, but they sure scored often. Another great performance from our bullpen. And a curly W is in the books!!!
