🔴LIVE 🔴Seattle Mariners VS Tampa Bay Rays/September 02/ Envivo TV/ MLB THE SHOW 25

deal as it used to be because the rosters aren’t as large as they used to be. Managers have to be a lot more selective. I think this really balances things out, especially for that team that’s trying to get into October baseball. It’s the Seattle Mariners taking on the Tampa Bay Rays. First pitch coming at you right after the break. Just about ready to roll here. And today’s starting pitcher, Shane Bos. Chris, it’s a little more common these days, but still he’s a strikeout per inning type of guy. Well, I hear you about the strikeouts. A lot more guys striking out today, but when you consider having the ability to get that strike out, particularly when you need it, a man on third, less than two outs, situations where, yeah, maybe you’re not a real high strikeout guy, but just knowing you have the swing and miss stuff in a big spot, I think it’s real critical. And he’s got it. Let’s go. Randy Rosarena leading things off and takes a strike. [Music] The pitch that one way outside and it’s a ball and a strike. swinging a foul straight back. And that’s in the dirt. Next offering misses down and away. fouled off again and it remains three and two. I wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball. Try to go again with a fast ball. Slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching up. Good played appearance there. Able to take the walk and that’s how they get their first base runner of the game. Oh, looking for a swing anding miss right there or for the ump to help him out and make a call with that last pitch, but neither happened. Close pitch, but a good take to earn that walk. And now it’s going to be Cal Raleigh. And that one fouled off. [Applause] A Rosena gets his lead at first with nobody out [Music] and a count one and two with two strikes. May see some movement over there at first base trying to stay out of the double play right here. That misses and the count is two and two. And there’s a ball. Straighten him up a little bit. Swing and a ball popped up. Loud makes the grab. One away. And now we check out the Mariners lineup. This is one of the best teams in the league when it comes to drawing walks, Chris. So, we’ll probably see a very patient approach from them. Yeah, Boo. And that’s often uh what leads to a lot of runs scored. You get runners on base. You work that pitch count up for the opposing pitchers and then you take advantage when they make mistakes. You get into that bullpen. You could tell that everyone up and down this lineup just comes in with a great plan of attack, a lot of patience, just like you said. Throw to first. Here goes the runner. Swinging a miss. Throw to second. He’s safe. I think that steel kind of sets the tone, not just for this game, but for the entire series. First inning, game one. So that kind of tells me they’re going to be aggressive on offense and try to force the issue whenever they can. Runner at second here. One gone. Runner on the to go again. Pitch in for a strike. Throw to third and he’s in there easily. And the go-ahead run is now only 90 ft away. finish him. Swings and misses. He swung over top of the curve ball. Certainly a strikeout situation right there. The infield playing back and this pitcher has to step up and get the swing and miss. Really nice job of attacking the hitter at the plate. Pretty big two out at bat coming up now. And now it’s Josh Naylor. Sliced hard but fouled down the left side. No score yet, but a runner at third with two away. Next pitch is outside. Get out of here. That’s down and in. That one drifts inside. Good pitchers make pitches in big situations. And right here with a middle- of the order hitter up, runner in scoring position, he’s got to find a way to throw a quality strike. The 3-1 in for a strike. Full count. And boy, that was the pitch. 3-1. You want to be really aggressive on the fast ball. Foul ball. And it remains a full count. Two outs on the ground. right side and that one finds its way through. In comes the first run of the game. It’s one- nothing Mariners. Big RBI for him right there. He kind of rolled over on this pitch a little bit, but he got enough behind it to shoot it through for a knock. And you’ll take that anytime you can get him to find a hole. Auheno Suarez up to the plate now. Another solid power season. Outside low and that’s ball one. What do you say now? Fought off foul. That one to first. Fair ball. Lead runner touches second. Headed for third. And he’s got a double. Oh, that’ll make you feel good as a hitter right there. He was definitely late on that pitch, but he didn’t get beat. He got the bat on plane and just kept his hands tight to shoot it down the first baseline for the knock. The batter now, Jorge Palano. Swing and a miss. Strike one. This might be the most pressure you put on this guy today. You got one run in, you got to try to get another one or maybe two. Two outs, two in scoring position. swaying and a ball popped in the air. Base hit. One run is in. The second run scores and they lead by three. Well, he was a little off balance. He got the front foot down but was so great at keeping the hands back and allowed him still to get good wood to this baseball. Big one there as he drives in a couple of runs. And stepping in for the Mariners, Dominic Canzone. That’s a strike and it’s 0 and one. [Music] And a bat like this is almost over as it begins. In this situation, you have no idea what the next pitch is going to be. You just got to hope that you can make contact. Line drive and foul ball. Fouled off the plate. They’ll do it again. Swag and a miss. The velocity blasted it right past him. Three runs on three hits, no errors, and a runner left. Bottom half of inning number one. Coming up, it’s the Mariners three. The Rays coming to bat back here at Tropicana Field. Now, the starting pitcher in this one, Luis Castillo. And Chris, pitching on the road has not been particularly kind to him. Yeah. And you don’t want to be too quick to say that he can’t pitch on the road. Sometimes, you know, it’s just a matter of luck. It’s not having a feel difference between the bullpen mound to the mound out there on the playing field. Don’t know what it is, but I know this. He’s got good enough stuff to overcome and get it done on the road as well as at home. So, we’ll see what he’s able to do in this one. Number 14, the leadoff batter as he looks at ball one. Well, after putting up a nice inning on offense, got some runs across. This is where you look for the starter to go out there, have a shutdown inning. Don’t give that other team any hope. Uh you just hope that he can get through this inning, get the bats back up there while they’re hot. That one’s spoiled. And the count now two and one. Fast ball for a strike. That pitch just misses the inside corner and it’s three and two. Out there to center and that’ll get down for a hit and the leadoff man aboard. Hitting is really easy for some guys. One thing that I can see already, his bat stays in the zone on plane for an extended period of time. And guys like that, they have a high contact rate and they have more barrels because of that bat being on plane. And even when you don’t get it great, it’s still hit hard enough to dunk something in like that in front of the center fielder. Runner takes off. Pitch in for a strike. Throw save. That’s a stolen base. [Applause] Strike two. Clearly, it was sitting on a fast ball right there and just ended up out in front of the slider. Hey, you can’t fault him for his commitment. Now he’s just going to have to battle with two strikes. hammers that one deep left field and forget it. That one felt good. His 23rd of the year and they throw a pair on the board. It’s 3-2. He absolutely feasts on right-handed pitching and devours that one for a homer. And you can see that’s what he expects of himself at bat after at bat. He’s that confident. [Applause] That one was a hanger and pitchers typically don’t get away with making a mistake like that. And right there he made him pay. Lao at the plate. He’s someone that really beats up on right-handed pitching. The lefties, however, give him a little bit more trouble. And that’s through there for a strike. It’s 0 and one. And that’s in for a strike. Well, we call that keyholeing. Even though it’s right there and looks pretty good, if he doesn’t love it, he’s not going to swing that early in the count. Close one. Doesn’t get the call. And it’s one and two. And it’s fouled off. They’ll do it again. He really committed to that fast ball up at the top of the zone. and he knows that if he makes a mistake in the zone, it gets hit hard by a power guy like this. That’s a nice miss right there. Raleigh gathers, throws to first, got him one away on the strike out. Boi just ran out of patience there. He took a couple of pitches to even that count up, but two balls and two strikes, but that time chased outside the zone. Junior Camro next to hit for the Rays. Right through there for a strike. Oh, in one two now. One ball 02 pitch that far out of the zone gives the hitter a little confidence that maybe he can climb back into this at bat. One down, base is empty. That one just misses. Two balls, two strikes. Sharp grounder. That’s through for a base hit. So they get a man aboard with a one out single. He was all over that one. Really nice job staying up the middle with his approach. He didn’t try to do too much with the pitch. Just shot it through the infield. Josh Low next to hit for the Rays. At 96. That pitch is in for a strike. One’s the count. Camo over at first with one away. [Applause] Don’t play situation here. He’s been working up in the zone. Typically, you look for guys to get that ground ball. See if he adjusts on this next pitch. [Applause] bows that off to the left and will do it again. That wasn’t an easy pitch to hit. It’s much easier to do damage against mistakes, but that’s not what that pitch was [Music] and ball one. One ball, two strikes. [Applause] That’s to third. Suarez tossed to second and that’s two. But two come across to score in the inning courtesy of this two-run homer. It’s now a 32 ball game. Major League Baseball is on the show. New inning getting started. Here’s the veteran shortstop. JP Crawford. Boss back to work. Center field. Mangum in position and there’s one down. Woo! He was all over that first pitch fast ball. Just barely missed it. Man, this guy was ready to hit. Cole Young getting ready to hit and immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter. Looks like he’s just sizing him up there. Really good pitch to hit, but he took it all the way. Sometimes guys just want to set their timing later on in the game. That may be a pitch that he turns on. Just missed. Just missed with that back door breaking ball. If he gets a swing and miss or called strike, 02 count instead. It’s 1-1. Look for him to go back to that pitch later in this at bat. On the ground to third and that goes foul. Tampa cut on and miss. struck him out. That K is his third of the game. That right there is one of those breaking balls that you swing through and you feel like you should have done something with it or at least spoiled it away, but when it’s breaking in on you like that, if the spin is tight enough, it can actually tie you up. A Rosarena in the box with two gone and takes a look at a called strike. [Music] He doesn’t seem to like to pitch up. Hasn’t offered on either one of those pitches. 02 count now. I think the guy’s going to climb the ladder out there. Oh, that’s inside. Two out. Base is empty. There’s a swing and a drive. Mangum going back and that one hops the wall safely into second. He’s got a double. He went up there and got it with two strikes. I’m not going to leave this in the umpire’s hands. I’m going to be aggressive. It was in a location where he could get those arms extended that he loves to do. So, nice job right there coming back in that at bat. Cal Raleigh up next for the Mariners. First time up was a pop out. Fouls one off out of play. Back to our left. [Music] And now the one swinging a ground ball up the middle dives and he can’t hang on. The throw is late and he reaches safely. Up next for Seattle. And now it’s Julio Rodriguez. Went down on strikes his first time through. A swing and a miss. And that’s strike one. [Music] to the right side and it’s through for a hit. In comes the run from third and it’s an RBI single. It’s 42. Comes through with the RBI. Not much to this one other than just a willingness to go the other way and put the ball in play. That’s a team at bat right there. Nice job of staying back and letting the ball get deep. [Music] First and second, two outs. Here’s Josh Naylor. RBI single his last time up. And the first pitch misses for ball one. Well, he’s just given up three straight hits and now behind in this count to this hitter. Might be a good time for somebody to call a timeout. Maybe the pitching coach go out there and talk to him just a little bit. Two on, two outs. And there’s the strike. [Applause] Next offering is fouled back. Raleigh the lead runner at second. Rodriguez at first. Two out of the inning. To the right side. Lao sends it to first. That ends the inning and stops things from getting out of hand. Bottom half of inning number two. Now Jake Mango. He’s someone that you might not describe as having elite level speed, but he can absolutely move and it is a factor in his game. Ball one low. Boo. This guy’s definitely a plus runner. But what I love about him is that he goes all out every single time. Never takes a break. It’s guys like that, even though they don’t have the elite speed, the fact that they’re consistent with it, they make moves on the base paths. Lace down the line. Could be extra bases. Fakes the turn. He’s digging for second to second. Pulls him off the bag. Well, a swing like that can help you come out of the struggle. We saw the numbers coming into the ball game, but all he’s trying to do at this point is help his team win. Richie Palasios next to hit for the Rays. Come on, Richie. delivers a pitch in for a strike at 95. Man at second. Fouled off to the right. That’s a ball. One ball, two strength. [Applause] Off the mark there and it’s two and two. Runner in scoring position. Nobody out. Bottom half of inning number two. And it remains two and two. [Music] Tampa swing and a pop off in foul ground. Stretches out and holds it in. Batting eight. Catcher. Nick Forz. Here’s the catcher. Nick Forz, good defender. He’s been inconsistent offensively. He’s been such a good hitter with runners in scoring position. Some guys just take it to another level. For him right now at the plate, it’s like everyone else is in slow motion and he’s in full speed. Close but called a ball and it’s one and that’s good pitch there. really had some run and finished little up and end just on the edge. And that’s one of those if you swing at it, he had a broken bat as you jog back to the dugout. As a pitcher, you know, the runner on second is ready to push things with this speed. A base hit is probably going to be a big run. So, you really have to execute on the mound in there at the knees and the count one and two. Fast ball is outside. Man, oh man. I don’t know how you take that pitch. That’s as close as it gets. And that one is inside. He’s really tightening up his hitting zone with two strikes here. I love it. That one hit to right. Kenzone. Are you kidding me? Hauls it in for the owl. Batting night. The shortstop. Tristan Tristan Gray now at the plate. Go. Come on. You can do it. Come on. First pitch and he just misses. The bit behind with that swing. It’s strike one. There’s a certain point where you have to commit to what you think you see. And he guessed wrong right there. Nasty slider with just terrific bite at the end. Two outs and one in scoring position. Yeah, that’s fouled off. Man on second, two down. Fights it off. You’ll see another. battling here as he fouls it away [Music] and that one in the air center field. Rodriguez sizes this one up and the inning is over. So they work around the leadoff double. We play two full. It’s the Mariners four, the Rays two. We’re back to start the third and there’s a new arm on the mound, Ryan Pepio. And compared to a lot of other relievers, strikeouts have not been a big weapon for him this year. So, the defense should be active. Audio Suarez up to hit now. Doubled his first time. He’s not gonna get cheated up there. No, he’s not. He’s looking to do damage with every swing he takes. He was late there. Strike one. Bullpen movement for the Rays. Ryan Baker warming up for manager Kevin Cash. Clevenger getting cranked up as well. Next offering is downstairs. [Music] Tap foul at the plate. Close one. Doesn’t get the call. And now two balls and two strikes. Spoils a two- strike pitch. And he’ll see another [Music] ripped to third throws across the diamond. One up, one down. Up next for Seattle, the designated hitter, Jorge Palanco. Now it’s the DH, Jorge Palano. He drove in two with a single his first time up. Pepio in his third season. He features a four seam fast, a change up, a slider, a cutter, and he occasionally uses a curve. Man, he really sells the change up with that arm action. Fouled off left side. Right side hard hit to first. First two batters retired here in the top of the third. [Applause] Now batting right fielder Dominic Kzone. Dominic Kzone up next for the Mariners. Struck out swinging his first time. Right through there for a strike. And it’s fouled away. Strike three. Got him. Looking on the change up and one, two, three go to Mariners as they can’t add to their 4-2 lead. [Applause] and welcome back to the ballpark. Now here is number 14 Simpson and a foul ball. Well, these Rays doing a great job, Boo, of just waiting for the right pitch to come their way. And I’m seeing very patient at bats out of them. They’re doing a good job of working the pitch count and they’ve been able to push a couple of runs across to score as well. Got him swinging. One down. Well, take a look at the three pitch sequence here. Pretty simple in terms of putting him away at the plate. Once you’re ahead 02 as a pitcher, you can really expand the zone and see how aggressive that hitter is going to be trying to protect and battle. And right there, clearly he was in swing mode, but all you can do is hope to foul that off. Yandi Diaz now he’s already homered here in this one. And a first pitch fast ball is in for a strike. Still relatively early, but with a pair of runs already on the board, the ripple effect of that high pitch count might set him up to do more damage later in this game. Just off the outside edge and the count even one and one. Swing and a line drive. That’s a base hit into left field. So, a man aboard now with one away. Didn’t exactly square that one up, but sometimes you don’t have to. He clearly didn’t catch that one on the big part of the bat. Just kind of muscled it out there. And, you know, on the mound, it can be pretty frustrating for a pitcher, but you just kind of have to expect those to drop in there sometimes. And now it’s Brandon Laauo that clips the zone. Strike one. Now, these guys definitely looking for a big swing of the bat right here. to try to close that gap. But, you know, at the very least, if you could find a way to manufacture that run from first, it feels like it’s really important to getting back into this ball game. Hard hit, base hit. They get it in quickly. So, first and second now, one out. Back-to-back base hits. Fast ball off the plate a little bit, but a really nice job of going with it. Punched it to the opposite field for that knock. Now up for Tampa Bay. Junior Camro one for one with a single so far. That’s a strike. Diaz the lead runner out at second. Lao at first. One gone. And a swing and a miss. Knowing that the pitcher wants a ground ball double play opportunity here. You’ve got to lay off pitches down in the zone right there. Swinging at that pitch. That’s a no no. That misses the zone. One and two to count. Some activity in the Mariners bullpen. Taylor Sedo, the left-handed reliever, appears to be getting loose. Woo! A hard throwing right-hander up as well. [Applause] Oh, can’t get out of the way of the fast ball and that’s going to sting. He had him one, two, and he ends up hitting him with a pitch. Manager out of the dugout now and it looks like we’ll see a change on the mound. Luis Castile won’t go any further and he leaves with the bases loaded, so he’ll look for some help from his teammate coming in behind him. Now, here’s a new pitcher from the pen, Caleb Ferguson. He doesn’t get a lot of strikeouts compared to other relievers, so he relies on getting that soft contact and the defense doing work behind him. They’ll have to be on their toes with him on the bump. So, bases loaded with one away. Now, here is Josh Low. Golden opportunity right here. And that drops in for a strike. Tough situation right here. So important as a pitcher to get ahead in the count as he did right there. One out, base is full. I think ultimately you want to tie him up, get the ball in on the plate so that he can’t get the barrel to it and hit it to the outfield. Squirts away a little bit. And an excellent job keeping it right there. And that skips in the dirt. Base is loaded. One away. That one close. Rule the ball. Three and two now. Well, as a pitcher, when you make a big pitch down around the knees and don’t get the call, it’ll eat at you out there. So, some handle it a little bit better than others. And right here, clearly letting the ump hear it a little bit. Bows it back with two strikes. That ball is foul and the pressure is building. Hanging in there pretty good against the lefty. Ninth pitch of the atbat do next. [Music] Gets a piece and stays alive. [Music] Foul. We’ll see another payoff pitch. [Music] Keeps the atbat going with a foul ball. [Applause] Foul ball left side. And he’ll see another. All right, let’s go. Ah, ground ball and that’s through the infield. One runs in the throw in. Safe. He beats the tag. Tie ball game. 44. But when you see that many pitches in an at bat, your chances of succeeding go up. And right there we see the result. So next to the plate for Tampa Bay, Jake Mangum doubled in his first AB. Splits the plate. That’s strike one. Let’s keep it going. Bunting for a hit. He pops it up. Reaching for it. Makes the catch. Well, he gave the bun a shot there, but not able to execute. Yeah, I think he rushed it a little bit. And when guys rush, can be a popup or can be bunted right back at a position player. Now the left fielder, Richie Palasios. He’s over for one. inside corner for a strike. Go and one. And that’s outside [Applause] towards first. throws to first in time. They limit the damage here. They get two and draw even again. Onto inning number four and we are tied 44. Welcome back. And now on the mound to start the fourth, Ian Seymour. Well, he’s been a really tough guy to take deep this season. You usually have to string some hits together in order to get to him. [Music] So digging in, JP Crawford flyed to center his first time. He’s 0 for one. Let’s do it. That misses. Ball one. [Music] Punch him out. tied at four. That one is upstairs. Next pitch is outside. [Music] It’s a leadoff walk and that’s the go-ahehead run. What a battle. It’s not always easy laying off a 3-2 pitch. And I tell you what, he earned that walk. Cole Young digs in now. He’s 0 for one. Trying to move him over here. Over to Diaz out on the sack. That’s a good piece of hitting right there. The job was to move the runner up and give your team a chance to score the go-ahead run. That’s exactly what happened. And so you better believe your teammates are happy with you after that at bat. Now it’s Randy Rosarena. First offering and it just misses just off the inside edge. Well, usually a high level of confidence when you’re facing a young pitcher out there on the mound in this situation ahead 200 has put himself in a really good spot. And a foul ball makes the count two and one. Just missed. If he’s able to connect on that, look out man at second outside low and the count is three and one. Cal Raleigh in the on deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. Next offering is in for a strike. Looked pretty good as far as being in the strike zone, but I’m sure as a hitter not too good with where it was located. Very top of the strike zone. Middle away. One out. The go-ahead run is at second. Top half of inning number four. Fouled off again and it remains three and two. Swung on. Belted back there. Out of here. His 27th home run of the season. It’s 64. He kept swinging and it paid off. Well, that was a battle, Boo. And he just kept taking his cuts. Finally squared one up. [Applause] Boo. I wasn’t sure he hit that one as hard as he needed to to get it out of here, but it had just enough behind it for the homer. What an attempt at the wall, though. He really gave a terrific effort to try and bring that one back. Cal Raleigh up next for the Mariners that finds the mark on the inside corner. There’s a high chopper. Camero fires to first on the run. It’s there and that’s a great play. It’s a good recovery though after giving up the home run, not allowing it to stay in the head, but going to work at the next hitter. And a tough one at that. Two out, space is empty. Here’s the center fielder, Julio Rodriguez. First pitch misses [Music] outside with a breaking ball. Low but in for a strike. And that was the sweeper. late with the swing there. I think he was sitting off speed there. Got him. Third out. Two come in on this Seattle homer. It’s now a 64 ball game. You’re dialed into the show. Now, welcome back. And they turn to a new arm as we kick off the bottom of the fourth. Taylor Saledo. And this is an important part of this game. Tight score and still a lot of outs to get. So, they’re looking for a big outing out of them right here to get some critical outs. Here’s the catcher to hit. Nick Forz flyed to right his first time. [Applause] First pitch doesn’t find the zone. Little chopper rolls foul. That’s too low. The countdown two and two and a foul ball. He stays alive. That’s outside. And now it’s three and two. on the ground to third. Suarez throw to first in time. He didn’t make things easy for him there, but they still get the out. The short stop, Tristan. Now it’s the short stop. Tristan Gray flyed to center his first time. [Applause] That is upstairs for ball one. swings through that one for strike two. That pitch started in and ended up on the outside edge, just changing planes and very difficult, especially for a left-handed hitter to track. He’s got to be frustrated with that call. Everything in that at bat was away until the final pitch. Three pitches in a row on the outside part of the plate. And of course that gets you conditioned to look out there, maybe a little bit out on your toes. So a great call on pitch number four to just hit that inside part of the plate and freeze him for strike three. So the batting order turns over to the plate now for the Rays is the DH. That one the other way. That’s a base hit. And that keeps the inning alive. Nice rib. now batting first. And now the first baseman, Yandi Diaz. He’s already homered in this game. Just missed. With the tying run at the plate, we’re here in the bottom of the fourth. Step off, throw to first, and he’s back in easily. [Music] Two outs and another ball. Chris, with that distraction and the speedy guy at first, he’s in a favorable hitter’s count. Well, if nothing else, I mean, this is a great spot for a hitter to be in. Next pitch, a slider that misses outside. Brandon Laauo, the kind of bat that can make a big impact if they can keep it going here. And the tying run is on base. Pretty much the last thing you want from your bullpin arms or free passes, especially in spots like this. Make the team earn their way on. And here comes the Mariners manager to the mound. Pitching change coming. Taylor Saledo is done. Two-run ball game as he heads for the dugout. And we’ll be back with a new pitcher. New pitcher for the Mariners, Gabe Spire. This guy’s a strikethrower. He’s done an excellent job of avoiding walks so far this season. So, up next, Brandon Laauo. One for two. Yeah, keep it up. Let’s go. And this one squirts away from the catcher. So on the wild pitch, two guys advance. No trouble moving up to second on that play with the ball getting that far away from the catcher. Nice job to take advantage of the wild pitch. Two on, two outs. There’s the strike. [Applause] Strike two. And there’s a real chance they get out of this without allowing a run. fights that one away. Still one and two. Swing and a miss and he struck him out. Huge strike out there. Sometimes he wears the emotion on the sleeve, but that’s okay as long as he’s getting results. And right there, thrilled with the punch out to get out of a jam. We’re back and there’s a new arm on the mound to start the fifth. Garrick Clevenger. Well, good luck against this guy. He’s been extremely tough to hit this year. His numbers are excellent. So now it’s the Mariner cleanup hitter Josh Naylor. Singled and scored back in the first. He’s one for two. And immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter. Well, these Mariners really producing with runners on. It’s been a right place, right time kind of game for them. They’re hitting over 600 in this game with runners in scoring position and clearly that’s leading to a lot of runs. Their clutch hitting has been excellent. And a swing and a miss at the slider in the dirt. Beats him for the first out and that completes the strikeout. That’s that classic wipeout slider below the zone right there. Just nasty. Looks like a fast ball thigh high that you got to protect the zone and then it’s just that late break that fools you and kind of makes you look silly. Au Heno Suarez the next to hit and the first pitch misses for ball one. [Music] Come on now Tampa. just missed. Two count to a guy like this at the plate. You’ve got to throw a pitcher’s pitch. Don’t just try to get a strike. He could make you pay. Next offering is down low. One out. Base is empty. In there at the knees. Three balls in a strike. He swings and fouls one off. Three and two. The pitch is outside and ball four. You know, I think he’s okay with that outcome. It It wasn’t an intentional walk, but he wasn’t exactly trying to attack the zone either. Jorge Palano will hit next. Off the mark there. And that’s ball one. Suarez at first. One gone. Tampa Bay in the air out to center. Mangum on the move, makes the grab on the run and there are two down. That’s just a really nice catch on the run right there. He’s saved extra bases for sure. If the pitcher’s his friend, he’ll give him a second to catch his breath before he’s ready to deal the next pitch. And now the right fielder Dominic Kzone who’s 0 for two with a pair of strikeouts. Fast ball for a strike. 0 and one back up the Oh, that got him. Gets it there in time, though. And they come away with an out after a tricky start to the play. One left for Seattle. They still lead it though 6-4. Back now in Tampa Bay, we head to the bottom of the fifth. Here’s the third baseman, Junior Camro. Camo, just missed. Well, these Rays digging into their numbers have to be happy with the swings they’re taking. We’ve heard lots of loud noise coming from their bats in this one, haven’t we? I mean, they’ve logged six hits at 90 plus exit velocity, and that doesn’t happen by accident. All right. Eight. One ball, two straight [Applause] stays alive. Got him looking. Fast ball at the letters. Froze him for strike three. Now batting and stepping in for the Rays, Josh Low taking high in the draft. He’s had that top prospect labeled over him since he put on a professional uniform. But at some point that starts to go away and you’ve got to produce at the big league level. And a foul ball upstairs. And it’s one and one. [Applause] And that’s in there at the knees. Fans another. And that’s three straight strikeouts. He’s really good hitting the baseball the other way. So, credit the pitcher for having him out in front of that pitch. Clearly, he had him fooled. Now it’s the switch hitting outfielder Jake Mangum. Yeah, a big swing and a miss. In the on deck circle, you really want to use that opportunity to see some pitches and time up the fast ball. Last thing you want to do is miss a good hitable fast ball early in the count. That’s off the mark and a count one and two. Lifted in the air right center field. Rodriguez racing after it. Got it. Really had to move for that catch. And the inning is over. So they turn things over to the righty Brian Baker just trying to keep this one close here. And this is where a bullpin can give their players a chance to fight back into the game. So digging in JP Crawford stop JP Crawford. Yeah, the first offering a fast ball for a strike. Tampa Bay’s bullpen with some action. Mason Angler warming up for manager Kevin Cash. Kelly getting loose as well. Missed with a change up. One ball, one strike. Oh, that got away from him. And he’s going to reach on a hit by pitch to lead off the inning. Man at first, nobody out. Cole Young now at the plate. B for two in this one. Check swing and he went strike one. Baker the tall righty. He features a four seam fast, a slider, and he works in a change up right through there for a strike. Well, it looks like he’s wanting to work the upper part of the strike zone. What does that mean? Top hand better be working for the hitters. Adjust that side a little bit. Give yourself a chance to hit. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. pulled the string on the change up. Now batting leftielder. And up next for Seattle, Randy Rosarena. He had a big swing back in the fourth, a two-run homer and that helped them get the lead. And what a swing it was. Boo. Poetry in motion. And those are the type that you hardly feel when you connect with the baseball. Just so smooth. A great feeling off the bat. There’s the strike. [Applause] Crawford goes swing and a miss. Throw save. Good job to fight that one off. [Music] Strike three and that’s two in a row. Just locked him up right there for the second out. And that’s an at bat he’s probably going to be thinking about for a little while. Didn’t pull the trigger. Not how you want to go down in an RBI spot. So now you got to hope your teammate behind you can pick you up. Intentional walk here with two out. They set up a force at any base to end the inning. Well, it doesn’t get much easier with this next batter, but I totally understand going with the intentional walk in that spot. He’s just too dangerous at the plate right now. And there’s a base open, so it gives you options defensively to get it out. [Applause] Rodriguez stands in now. Looks at that one inside. He never moved cuz he never had time to. But that kind of velocity, you’d prefer that pitcher work away. Two outs. One, [Music] fast ball for a strike. Crawford over at second. Raleigh on first with two now. Hacks and misses. It’s a strikeout. So, no runs in the inning despite the leadoff walk. And that does it. 789 two up in the home half of the inning. It’s the Mariners six. The Rays four. We’re back and on the mound is the closer Andres Munoz. And one thing on him, he’s been really good this season at keeping the ball in the park. Not an easy guy to take deep. Now up for Tampa Bay, Richie Palasio. left shielder Richie Palasios. And that one a little below the knees. Ball one. And that one missing inside. A sharp slider. That’s a really good take right there. Slider down and in. very difficult to get on the same plane and do anything with swings and misses. Two and two now. Well, pretty clear to me he’s trying to go deep right there. But you got to get a pitch that you can handle. That’s a little bit low. [Applause] swings and misses and one down below the zone. Raleigh collects, fires to first, and he beats the throw. He’s safe. I feel like that’s one of those rules in baseball that’s tough to explain the logic behind if you’re talking to a new fan or someone trying to learn the game. It’s like, wait, what? The batter struck out, but he still gets to be on first base. Yeah, I hear you. It’s a weird one. Plus, the pitcher gets credit for the strikeout. It’s an over for the batter, but of course, no out is actually recorded. Kind of one of those just trust me, let’s move on situations. A swing and a miss. And that’s strike one. One ball, one strike. That one misses and a count. Two and one with the tying run at the plate. And the home team trying to pull it out. [Applause] And a swing and a miss. There’s that slider. Bell and those hitters count sometimes can be a little too aggressive and a good pitcher will play off of that. He’s got to get a better pitch to hit. Tying run at the plate. Spoils that one and it remains two and two. in the air right field and there’s one down. Unbelievable. Now batting the shorts stop Tristan Gray. Tristan Gray next to hit for the Rays. You got the number nine hole hitter right here looking to do whatever he can to get on base. Turn this lineup over. So, the best hitters in this lineup have a chance to tie up the ball game or maybe even walk it off and that drops in for a strike. Well, that’s really the money spot down and away. If you can locate that consistently, it’s going to be real tough for hitters to square that up. That’s what you love to see relievers do coming out of that bullpen. Munoz throws over. Palasios dives back in safely. I think you want to get a one-way lead. Be very aggressive in the secondary. This hitter not a power guy. So, you want to make sure that you can get some length on the secondary lead and perhaps score on a ball in the gap. [Applause] Down and in. Moved his feet. And that one fouled off. Knocks that one away and will do it again. Fouls that off to the left and will do it again. Man at first, one away. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. Down to the last out for the Rays. I think he might have gotten away with one right there. That was a very hitable pitch right over the heart of the plate. And I know that batter is kicking himself right now. Would like to get that pitch again. Just pulled the string on it and the deception gets him the K. Last chance for the Rays number 14. Next to hit for the Rays. That one’s upstairs. Ball one. Lined into right. And that is the ball game. Playing meaningful games in September is always exciting. A win today, first day of the month. This will just add more fuel to the fire. And this one ends with a final score of six to four. For Chris Singleton and our entire crew here at MLB the show, thanks for stopping by. I’m John Shami. Talk to you soon.
