How Good Really are the Phoenix Suns…
good really can the Phoenix Suns be? Because we just dropped that video the other day and it did pretty well and people in the comments were like, “Yeah, this is no more than a playin team at most.” But what really would the Suns be shooting for this year? They obviously are not trying to compete for an NBA championship. So any form of progression when it comes to retooling this young core and this roster around Devin Booker would be viewed as a success in my opinion. And I think that’s what the Suns have done. bringing in guys like Jaylen Green, Mark Williams, and then drafting Kaman Malawatch, Kobe Brea, and Rashier Fleming. This is a successful retool, and we haven’t even played a game into the season yet. And if we’re being 100% honest here, the super team in Phoenix of Deon Booker, Kevin Durant, and Bradley Beal was set up to fail from day one. We’re looking at three score first guards. And yes, we’ll call Kevin Durant a guard. I know he’s 7 foot and likes to hide his height saying he’s 6’8, but at the at the end of the day, he’s a score first wing, score first guard, and that was never going to work. Devin Booker has proven he can lead a team to an NBA Finals appearance and they were two games from a championship when they had CP3, Aton, Cam Johnson, McCall Bridges, even Jay Crowder, a bunch of wings surrounding DBook, letting him do what he does. Not like what these Suns had going on last year. And yes, I mean this team, he’s proven he can lead a team to the finals. That is what they are going to be looking to do in the future is once again building around the book because he can give you Kobe level buckets. We’ve seen it before on that run. He’ll be just 29 years old next season. So, he’s still very much in the prime of his career. And if the Suns can turn this around in a hurry, they can get a lot out of the tail end of Devin Booker’s prime because yes, this was a squad. They won 64 games and like I said they won the West went to the finals were up 20 in those finals before Monty Williams made zero adjustments against Giannis. But then again, what are you going to do? It’s Giannis. The Suns have their franchise guy and he is committed to Phoenix and that’s one thing that is very rare in the modern NBA. You get a guy that says he wants to stay in town for the rest of his career and that’s what they have with the book. I guess he just signed a massive extension, but now you can build around him. You add guys like Jaylen Green, Mark Williams, Dylan Brooks, proven NBA veterans, also rookies like come on Milo watch and Rashier Fleming who have a ton of upside. And Devin Booker is thrilled with this because they are finally committing to a direction surrounding him with talent. He averaged 26 a game last year with seven assists, four rebounds on a steal in 37 minutes. Shot 46% from the field, only 33% from three. And it was a down year. There are multiple factors we can blame that downyear own, but at the end of the day, it was a downyear. You could say, hey, he was co-starring with Kevin Durant, so he couldn’t get his normal diet of shots. He was playing point guard, playing out of position. And you could even throw the excuses on the fact that he played for Team USA this summer, and everybody else that played for Team USA this summer pretty much had a down year as well or ended up getting hurt. But when you look back to that season that I keep referencing, which is the 2021 2022 season when they went all the way, he averaged 27, five rebounds, 4.8 assists in 34 minutes, shot 47% from the field, 38% from three on seven attempts, had no competition as to who was the number one scorer, and finished fourth in MVP voting. It’s just basic common sense when it comes to team building that that squad they just put together wouldn’t work. But now, yes, Jaylen Green is a questionable point guard. I don’t know how long he’ll stay in Phoenix, but getting guys like Ryan Dunn and Dylan Brooks as well as Mark Williams around Devin Booker, these are perfect complimentary pieces. Now they just need a solid point guard. Or maybe, just maybe, they can transition Jaylen Green from a score first guard to a pass first point guard. Although I don’t think it’ll ever happen, it would be necessary for him to fit around Devin Booker because as we’ve just seen, two score first guards in Phoenix just does not work. Now, as for Jaylen Green, he’s had his flashes, like game two against Golden State in the playoffs, and he’ll be just 23 years old this year. So, he is still super young, way too early to give up on him as a prospect, right? He’s coming off a season where he averaged 21 points, 4.6 rebounds, 3.4 assists, and a steal in 34 minutes while shooting 42% from the field, and 35% from three on eight attempts. The problem is he’s just never really developed in Houston. So, now he gets a fresh start in Phoenix, which is probably good for him. But the big question mark is will he be able to play well in his new role of being the primary point guard? Because I don’t know if he can. He is such a score first guard and that’s always been the nature of him is that he’s going to score. He’s going to get 20. But if he can develop into a guard because they’ve already said he’s going to be handling the rock a lot. We’ll see what happens. However, Mark Williams, I like this addition. I don’t know why the Hornets were so fixated on trading Mark Williams. As a Hornets fan, it kind of made me mad. I mean, he’s 7 foot2 with a 76 wingspan. I understand he was always injured, but he played a lot this year. The most games he’s ever played in his career. And he looked good. 15.3 points, 10.2 rebounds, 2.7 assist, and 1.1 blocks in just 26 minutes. Shot 40% from the or 60% from the field, excuse me. Played 44 games. Uh, now the argument from the Hornets front office was he never played 45 games in his career, which is understandable, right? And a lot of those times he’s just getting shut down for the rest of the year because the Hornets are so bad. Per 36 minutes, he averaged 21 points and almost 14 rebounds per game. A monster year and monster adjusted stats for Mark Williams. So I think the Suns are getting a good one here in Mark Williams. I love all the moves they’ve made so far as well as drafting Kaman Milawatch to be the backup center and develop behind Mark Williams. He is kind of the alternate plan at center if it doesn’t work out. He’s also 7’2 with a 77 wingspan. Ridiculous intangibles for the young big man from Africa. Averaged 8.6 points a game, 6.6 rebounds, 1.3 blocks in 21 minutes last year at Duke. Shot 71% from the field, 25% from three on point4 attempts. So, there is a little bit of volume there when it comes to him shooting from beyond the ark. Something to work with and something to build upon there. Now, at this point in his career, however, he is just a rim running, rim protecting big that can catch lobs and finish around the rim, but he can slowly develop into a three-point shooter. They also have a couple of clamp down wings. First being Dylan Brooks, who they bring in from Houston, and I am in full favor of them keeping Dylan Brooks around for a while. He’s coming off a year in Houston where he averaged 14 points, 3.7 rebounds, 1.7 assists, and eight steals in 32 minutes while shooting 43% from the field and 40% from three. owns seven attempts per game. It was a really solid season for him and really the only fault into Dylan Brook’s game now is the one horrifically contested mid-range that he gets per game. Other than that, he’s been looking really solid. And then you also have last year’s rookie, Ryan Dunn, a 6’9 wing with a 72 wingspan that can absolutely lock down. That is his calling card. It’s what he’s known for is being able to strap people down. Last year, he averaged 6.9 points a game, 3.6 6 rebounds,6 assist, and.5 steals in 19 minutes. He did shoot 43% from the field and 31% from three on 3.6 attempts per game. Now, he will need to improve that three-point percentage. Obviously, uh out of the corner, he was actually pretty efficient, but overall, I think he could eventually play his way into being the starting power forward. He’s just got to improve his three-point efficiency and keep playing lock down defense. As for Rashir Fleming, steal of the draft at 31. That’s the steal of the draft. Uh he was my 13th overall prospect. should have been a lottery pick and they get him at 31. We’re talking about a 69 wing with a 75 wingspan that is suffocating defensively. Is built kind of like an NFL linebacker. If he was, you know, 6’4, he would fill out like that. He’s just jacked. He averaged 15 a game last year. 8.5 rebounds, 1.3 assists, 1.4 steals, and 1.5 blocks on 53% shooting from the field and 39% from three on four and a half attempts. Literally everything an NBA front office would want. and they let him fall all the way down. Shout out to the Suns for trading up and going to get him. And then Kobe Brea, who is without a doubt the best shooter in this year’s class. It doesn’t matter if it’s off the dribble, like right here where he’s just knocking it down, off the catch, right here where he’s knocking it down off the Ryan Dun assist. He can do a little bit of everything and that’s what makes him so good. Should have honestly went higher. We should have expected this that the best shooter in this draft class, the best shooter we’ve seen come out of college in the past couple of years, arguably up there with Reed Shepard from two years ago, was going to dominate out of the gate and he showed like a little bit more athleticism and a little bit more self-creation than I think everybody else thought he had, and that’s what put him over the top. But with that being said, that’s going to be it for today’s video. Let me know your thoughts on the Suns down in the comment section below. With that being said, thanks so much for watching today’s video.
This video looks at the Phoenix suns and try’s to determine how good they will be with a revamped roster surrounding Devin Booker
