🔴LIVE 🔴Miami Marlins VS Washington Nationals / September 02/ /MLB THE SHOW 25
Sec. If you want to be playing meaningful games at the end of September, you got to put your head down and grind for the next eight weeks. It’s the Miami Marlins and the Washington Nationals. All right, we’ll be back to get this one started after this. Almost ready to get underway. And on the hill in this one, Clayton Beater. What do you have on him? Well, this guy’s just been filthy out there on the mound. Hitters, batting under 200 against him, and they’re just having a hard time squaring up anything, doing any type of damage. The only way he hurts himself is if he gives up the free passes and surrenders a rare home run. But outside of that, it’s going to be a tough job for the opposing lineup today. Xavier Edwards, the leadoff batter, as he looks at ball one. [Music] Hit in the air out to center field. Hessle makes the grab and there’s one away. Take a look at the lineup. Their opponent on the mound today does run into some trouble finding the strike zone at times. So singing I got to figure part of the plan be patient, be selective today. Yeah, you know coming in regardless of you know what that first inning’s going to look like, you know his history. You don’t want to help him out. You’ve got to be patient and make sure that when you attack that it’s a pitch that you can do some damage with. Otherwise, just build up some traffic on the base pass. Push across some easy runs and perhaps get into some of those gap arms in the bullpit. Augustine Ramirez batting with one down. Takes a strike. Now one and one. One out. Base is empty. The pitch. That one in the dirt. Two balls, two strikes. Now a screamer into the outfield. Hassle makes the grab and there’s two away. Man, that’s one of those at bats where you have to remind yourself it’s about the process. He did everything right right there. Nothing to show for it, but in your mind, you have to convince yourself that it was a very good at bat. And first offering is fouled off. And that one wrapped foul. Next offering is in the dirt. And there’s a ball. Two out. Space is empty. Swing and a line drive. Base hit out into center field. So now it’s the fourhole hitter Otto Lopez. All right, let’s go. Foul ball there. Beater, 26 years old, and he was a second round pick in 2020. [Music] Two outs. [Music] Moved to first and he’s out and they got him. That ends the inning. Onto the bottom of the first. No score. Back here in Nationals Park and on the hill today, Lake Backer. How about a scouting report on him? And a guy like this is going to keep you in the ball game. He’s going to go out there, compete. Not going to see a whole lot of flare and flash, but he’s going to hand it over to the bullpen at some point. And if you’ve been able to score a few runs, you’ll be in it late. So, we’ll see if he’s able to do that for his club in this one. We go to the bottom of the first now. The left fielder, James Wood. [Applause] Oh, he doesn’t get the call. And that’s ball one. Sharp grounder. That’s through for a base hit. Man aboard on the leadoff single. [Applause] Here’s CJ Abrams to hit. CJ Abs. There’s the strike. 95 of that one. Wood gets his lead at first. Nobody out. Bounding ball here. Rolls foul with two strikes. May see some movement over there at first base. Trying to stay out of the double play right here. Cold strike three on the fast ball and that ran back over the inner half. Well, I think that’s a case of overthinking right there. You got three straight fast balls looking in the O2 count. Just a poor at bat. Here’s Josh Bell. Pickoff move to first and he’s back in there. And that one just misses a ball and no strikes. [Music] man at first, one away. Chris, with that distraction and the speedy guy at first, he’s in a favorable hitter’s count. Well, if nothing else, I mean, this is a great spot for a hitter to be in. Swinging a foul straight back. [Music] And now it’s filled up. [Music] [Music] Come on. In the air, left field down the line. And that’s a foul ball. I wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball. Try to go again with a fast ball. Slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching up. Strike three. And that’s two in a row. Well, even though he strikes out, he saw a lot of pitches and he battled. Plus, it gave the guys behind him an opportunity to see more from the pitcher. Not the result he wanted, but that’s still a good at bat. And now it’s Luis Garcia. This has been a career year for him when it comes to driving in runs. Let’s go DC. Fast ball for a strike and it’s 0 and one. And that one fouled off. [Music] Here’s the O2. Gets a piece there. We’ll do it again. That wasn’t an easy pitch to hit. It’s much easier to do damage against mistakes, but that’s not what that pitch was. Fast ball is outside. Really good take, especially with two strikes. Fans another and that’s three straight strikeouts. So, nothing in the Washington half of the first. We’re scoreless through an inning at Nationals Park on the show. top of the second. Here’s the shorts stop at the play. Otto Lopez. You talk about elite defensive players, especially in the middle of the diamond, and this guy is at the top of the list. the shorts stop takes a ball and you played behind guys and they loved having your speed out there defensively. One of the things that we talk about is how much pitchers enjoy having those elite defenders behind him. [Applause] The one-1 is fouled off. The one thing about that is speed never goes in a slump and defense shouldn’t either. hitting wise, you can struggle, you can lose your mechanics, but the thing that you can do consistently every single game is play great defense if you’re talented in that way. And this is what this guy does. There’s a swing and a drive. And it gets into the corner, but it’s foul. And down on strikes he goes. And one away. Here’s the third baseman, Connor Norby. That one not close. And it’s one and0. Highf fly ball lifted in the air right field. Lyall makes the grab and there’s two gone. Batting six leftielder, Ariberto Hernandez the next up for the Marlins. And they’re swinging a miss. Second inning here. No score. Two down. Nobody on. Swing and a miss. And he got him. And good work there as he gets a one, two, three. Nothing doing for the Marlins. We’ll go to the bottom of the second. No score. back in Washington DC. Here’s the rookie right fielder Dalen Lyle number 51 backer back to work misses just off the outside edge. I think that was a strike. Good spot there, but didn’t get the strike at the knees and doesn’t seem too convinced by the call out there on the mound as he tries to get a better sense of the umpire strike zone. And a strike in there. Matthew Ross behind the plate. Pitchers umpire. Yeah, pitchers that work side to side effectively love being on the mound with Ross calling balls and strikes. Boo, if you can command your stuff on the outer edges of the strike zone, he will reward you. Next offering is outside. What about an umpire’s height? How much of a role does that play in your experience and what the strike zone is like? Yeah, I think it pushes the strike zone up a little bit, which you know, as a former hitter, you like that. You wanted the ball up. You didn’t want to have to deal with stuff down in the zone consistently. Going to have to have a little more discipline in future at bats. That pitch looked good, but you can’t hit it. It was just too high in the zone. You usually see a swing and miss or weak contact in the infield. Andres Chaparo stands in now and watches strike one. Swing and a highf fly ball out there towards left field. Hernandez hauls it in. Two away. Just pulled off of it a little bit right there. that front shoulder coming open instead of staying closed. If he does that, he’s going to be able to go up the middle the other way with some authority instead of a fly out to left. Robert Hassel to third stands in with two away as he takes a ball. swings through that. Instead of letting the hitter get his arms extended, tied him up a little bit. Slightly up, slightly in. And now the count is even. [Music] That’s ball four. Tried another fast ball but missed the spot. A great back and forth in that at bat. He had to lay off some really close pitches and somehow Boogie found a way to keep the bat on his shoulder right there. I’ll tell you right now, I couldn’t have done it. Throw to first and he dives back in safely. [Music] Brady House in the box now as he leaves that one up high. No, the two out walk. Got to erase that and really go to work on the hitter. You got to go ahead and just let him steal if he’s going to try to create the swing and miss and get out of this jam. And you wonder, is he in his head a little bit? Even if the base runner doesn’t steal right here, what’s great is that he is dividing the attention of the pitcher and may serve to give his teammate a better pitch to hit at the plate. Swang and a ball lifted in the air and that is the third out of the inning. So one left for Washington. We’ll move to the third with no score. And welcome back to the ballpark. Top half of the third inning. Now it’s the rookie first baseman, Eric Wagaman. Back when you played, it wasn’t the empirical data we have now. It was a guy with a ruler and a diamond taking a colored pencil and drawing a line where he thought someone had hit the ball. Right. That or just going off of gut or feel? What does it look like his swing is today? What’s the pitcher throwing? They are sticking to the metrics and what seems to be most consistent for that hitter regardless of who the pitcher is on the mound. Outside low and the count one and two. Lifted in the air out to left. Full extension makes the catch. Really nice job of tracking that one down. And I noticed some initial hesitation ball off the bat. Didn’t look like he got a great read, but he made up for it by closing on it quickly. Laid out and hauled it in. Derek Hill will hit next. Bunting for a hit. And that’s foul. [Music] outside. Top of the third, no score. Next offering upstairs. And that’s a little bit high. First pitch strike from the pitcher, but then no panic at all by the hitter. Very patient, showing good discipline. Now he’s in the driver’s seat with a 3-1 count and he grounds one to the right side onto first. Two out. Well, he’s doing a nice job of keeping the ball out of the air. Lets the defense work behind him with another ground ball. Good execution. And now the rookie second baseman Javier Senoha come and he pumps it a strike. There it was. Oh, here it is. Hit it. He gets a take. Gets ahead in a count. And down on strikes and he’s registered three Ks in this one and one, two, three go to Marlins and we are still scoreless. And we’re back. And here’s the catcher, CJ Stubs, trying to pick up his first knock in the big leagues. And there’s a strike on the outside corner in the air right side. makes the catch and there’s one down. So, the Nets lineup turns over. James Wood digging in for the Nationals. One for one. He let off the bottom of the first with a single. That’s in for a strike. hit hard but foul off to the left swing and a fly ball well struck left field. Fernandez has this one sized up. Hauls it in for the out. Now batting short stop CJ. Here’s CJ Abrams now. Struck out looking his first time. That one finds the zone. Strike one. just missed. Out to short over to first and that is the inning. And the Nationals gone in order and we’re still knotted at zero. Back here in Nationals Park, digging in is the switch in outfielder Xavier Edwards. First pitch misses. Great take right there. Showed some really good discipline. Breaking ball coming in. You see it well, but don’t trust that it’s going to hang on for a strike. Nice job, Line drive and foul ball. Fouled off left side. The 2-2 spoils a two- strike pitch and he’ll see another. And that’s outside. Flying drive and that’s a base hit out into center field. Hitting is really easy for some guys. One thing that I can see already, his bat stays in the zone on plane for an extended period of time. And guys like that, they have a high contact rate and they have more barrels because of that bat being on plane. And even when you don’t get it great, it’s still hit hard enough to dunk something in like that in front of the center fielder. beater checks over to first and he’s back. Stepping in Augustine Ramirez fought off foul. [Music] Check swing. No appeal. And a swing and a miss. Big time jam right there. I hate it as a hitter, but standing in center field, you can’t help but chuckle a little bit. got him looking. He’s notched four strikeouts now. Well, big strikeout right there. And maybe a little controversial with the call. I think he got a little bit of favor on the mound. No question about it. It’s not exactly what you want to see in a big spot like that. And I’m sure there’s some chirping going on from the dugout making it clear that wasn’t his best call behind the plate today. And here is Jacob Marcy. And that’s in for a strike. 0 and one. Checks his swing. Now it’ll appeal to third. And he went around. Just enough that time. with a go-ahead run at first. Top half of inning number four. Grounded to third. Could be two to second. Pulls him off the bag. Now batting shortstop Lopez. So, here’s the cleanup hitter, Otto Lopez. 0 for one. He struck out swinging last time. He’s looking for a ground ball to get a double play and out of this jam. Activity in the Washington bullpen. Jackson Rutled looks to be getting ready for Dave Martinez. Ribbalta the hardthrowing right-hander up as well. Two on, one out. Rips one to right down the line and it’s fouled. Fourth inning underway. No score. Swing and a miss. Going to count one and two. Generally second, third time through the lineup, you want to be able to lean on those secondary pitches and command them. Looks like he’s doing a nice job of it in the dirt. Nothing happening on the bases, though. Hit on the ground to the right side. Finds its way through. Base hit. Here comes the throw. It’s off the mark and he scores on the board first. It’s one zip. Well, there you go. The RBI machine. Another clutch runscoring at bat. Yeah, he’s been so good in these situations. Call it clutch if you want, but his resume speaks for itself. Connor Norby the next up for the Marlins. Fly to right his first time. And that’s outside. Marcy on third. Lopez over at first with one away. I want to start that load a little bit sooner because of the good VLOO. lined into right. Lyle makes the grab on the run. Here comes the throw, but it’s offline. He will score. It’s two zip. That was just a great jump and route to the ball. Well, it had to be. If he was going to cover all that ground and bring in that sinking liner, that’s the way it had to be done. Nice job. And now for the Marlins. Ariberto Hernandez struck out swinging his first time. There’s the strike of the knees. Hernandez in his rookie season, 25 years old, and he was born in the Dominican Republic. Squirts away a little bit. in the air right field. Pretty well struck. High bounce takes it over the fence for an automatic double. And boy, do they catch a break. Otherwise, you’re looking at runners around the bases and probably a run that scores. manager out of the dugout now and he’ll make a move to dip into the nationals pen. Clayton Beater will depart and that’s an excellent job from the reliever in the starting role today. Gave him some length. Back with a new arm after this on pitch now for the Nationals. Jake Irvin pretty tight game so they’re looking for quality pitches out of him right here. got to do his best to keep the score right where it is. Eric Wagaman the next up for the Marlins. Lifted in the air right center field. Pulls up and that’s in there for a knock. One runs in. Now the second run is in. It’s four zip. That’s all he needed. Just a simple base hit and he drives in two in a huge spot. I don’t know how he was able to shoot that pitch the other way and still put something on it. That pitch was inside and he let it get really deep. So, pretty incredible hands to fight it off and still get good wood on it. Now it’s going to be Derek Hill rolled out to second in his first at bat. There’s the strike. Swing and a miss. And that’s strike two. More and more guys are looking to slug regardless of the count and this situation will keep a close eye on his approach. Swang and a miss. Struck him out. Inning over. Although plenty of damage done. So they move out in front after a fourrun outburst to the bottom of inning number four. Now it’s the Marlins four and the Nationals nothing. 345 do up for the home team and now up for Washington. Josh Bell went down on strikes his first time through and the first pitch misses for ball one. Swing and a highf fly ball deep left field. That one back there gone and they’re chipping away. It’s 4-1. He absolutely feasts on right-handed pitching and devours that one for a homer. And you can see that’s what he expects of himself at bat after at bat. He’s that confident. His bat looks like it’s in the zone for such a long time and that gives him the ability to get barrel on it and hit the ball out to any part of the park. Next to hit for the Nats, Luis Garcia. There’s the strike. You know, these Nationals showing great discipline at the plate and patience definitely seems to be the name of their game in this one. He’s only given up one run, but the starter pitch count is starting to get up there and that might be the best news yet for this offense. You know, sometimes all it takes is getting to the next arm before an offense does any damage. And that might be the case today. outside low. It’s a ball in two strikes. Battling here as he fouls it away. Fouls that off to the left and we’ll do it again. Really great change of speeds. He goes off the off speed to the fast ball and the hitter doesn’t know what’s coming next. Breaking ball inside and that’s ball two. Oh, look at the stop. Jump throw across his body. Not in time and he reaches safely. The effort was there with the jump throw. You got to love it. But it just wasn’t in time. Still a really impressive play just to get to that ball and make it close at first. And not every shortstop can even make that play. Manager out of the dugout now. And it looks like we’ll see a change on the mound. Lake Backer gives way. It’s a three-run game and we’ll be back to tell you about the new arm in a minute. pitching. New pitcher for the Marlins, Adam Meer. He’s been so good against lefties. Digging in. It’s the speedy outfielder Dalon Lyall. First time up was a pop out. Just missed. One on, nobody out. A run in. We’re here in the bottom of the fourth. And that is out of play. Let’s keep it going. The one-1 swing and a miss as he was out front that time on the ground left side. Six, four, three, and they turn the double play. Oh man, what a smooth double play. That was a thing of beauty from start to finish. [Music] Andres Chaparo digging in for the Nationals. Yeah, that’s fouled off. Close one. Doesn’t get the call. And the count is one and one. Action in the pen down there. Freddy Tarnick preparing to come on if needed. Martinez also throwing. So a foul ball makes it one and two. swing and a miss and he struck him out. That’s the inning, but the Nationals get one back on the solo homer. It’s now a 4-1 ball game. Back after this on the show. So, digging in, Javier Senoha. Second base. [Music] Let’s go. Let’s go. Irvin back to work. Ripped on the ground to second. Whips it to first. One away here in the fifth. Fastball groove right down the middle. Usually a lot of damage done with that pitch. a hard grounder, but he wanted to get that ball in the air, maybe drive it into the gap. Xavier Edwards, the next up for the Marlins, one for two. Late on that fast ball. Good pitch right there. Tied him up on the hands. If I’m out there on the bump, I’m going right back in there. Popped up and that’s a foul ball. the 02 out towards left center. No trouble here. Puts it away for the out. And there’s two down. Now batting number 15. Two down. Base is empty. And now the catcher comes up to hit. Augustine Ramirez bowl for two in this one. Right through there for a strike. [Applause] That one to first. A dive. Nice stop. Throws from the seat of his pants. And that’s a nice play to end the inning. First, it looks like making the stop is the hardest part, but feeding to the pitcher on the move, I think even tougher. Great job of hitting that moving target. They’re going to be fired up in the dugout. Robert Hassel the third now at the plate walked his first time and that one clips the corner. Well, these gnats need to bring up the quality of their bats and specifically their swings. Just one extra base hit for them. So, they haven’t exactly been hitting the ball gap to gap or out of the park. That makes it really difficult to generate runs. And that’s downstairs now. One and two. That one missing inside. Twins and misses. It’s a strikeout. Had him out front for strike three. And Chris, that’s a way to neutralize his speed by keeping him off base. And the defense breathes a sigh of relief because he puts pressure on everyone if he can put the ball in play. But that’s how you do it. Keep him off balance. Get him out of there and deal with the next guy. House in the box now. No balls in a strike. One down. Base is empty. That’s high. That’s off the mark now. Two balls in a strike on the ground to third. Throws to first man for the fifth inning. Moving along. Two quick outs. That’s a huge defensive play in the late stages of the game. It might not be the most challenging we’ve seen today, but it needed to be made. That’s helping your team. And there’s one thing on his mind this at bat. getting that first hit at the big league level. That’s in there. One-1. Pitching has been pretty dominant in this one, but you got to be careful not working with too big a lead. They could get right back in this ball game if you’re not careful. That misses and it’s one and one. That’s good pitch there. Really had some run and finished little up and end just on the edge. And that’s one of those if you swing at it, you got a broken bat as you jog back to the dugout. Lifted in the air right field. Edwards brings it in for the third out. Jacob Marcy digs in now. Singled and scored back in the first. He’s one for two. First pitch just misses. You know, these Marlins, simply put, are producing a lot of quality swings. A handful have turned into outs, but of the balls they put in play, 10 have been line drives. I say keep barreling the ball and good things will happen. Don’t let that get you frustrated. That one misses. And now 3 and 0. And he takes a strike. Clearly taking all the way there in that three-0 count. It was a cookie right down the middle. in the air pretty deep out to center field. Hassle under this one. Makes the catch for the out and there’s one down. Now batting short stop Lopez. Otto Lopez the next up for the Marlins. First pitch doesn’t find the zone in the air to left center. Hessle on the move. Rings it in. And there are two down. That’s just a really nice catch on the run right there. He saved extra bases for sure. If the pitcher’s his friend, he’ll give him a second to catch his breath before he’s ready to deal the next pitch. Norby up for the third time here. Watches that one miss. And it’s even up [Music] Pop foul out of play off to the right. Throwing the ball well and they need this scoreless inning in relief right here. Been doing a good job keeping them in striking distance. Swing and a highf fly ball to left. Makes the catch in and over. Three up, three down for him there. Top of the order, two up in the home half of the six. It’s the Marlins four and the Nats one. So, the closer summon from the bullpen, Ronnie Enriquez. He’s got some of the best swing and miss stuff going right now. He’s striking out hitters at a very high rate this year. So, this should be fun to watch. Up now for Washington, James Wood. He has singled and he has fly to left. That clips a corner right side and that’s just fouled. And that one way outside and the count is one and two. fouled off and they’ll do it again. Fast ball is outside. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. He’s locked in at the plate when he’s using the whole field. He was out in front there. just needs to let the ball travel a little more and his timing will be back on track. Good pitch for the strikeout. And now up for Washington, CJ Abrams. [Music] You see the velocity 97 with that fast ball. Foul ball. One down. Base is empty. Paul [Music] fights that one away. Still one and two. Fights it off. He’ll see another. The shorts stop takes a ball. still just the second batter of the inning. And on the mount, he’s already thrown 13 pitches. They got him working hard out there foul ball left side. He’ll see another. Five foul balls in this at bat so far. And these two are going headto head. You can see the crowd. They’re starting to get into it a little bit more and more each pitch even though there hasn’t been a ball in play yet. The 3-2 is outside and it’s ball four. It wasn’t easy, but he earned that walk after a long at bat. When you go that deep into an at bat, the hitter usually comes out on top. Runner on at first with one gone. Next is the DH. A switch hitter, Josh Bell. He’s already homerred here in this one. Ground ball right side could be two. Wagaman to second and that’s a double play to end it. A little sigh of relief for the pitcher there ending the ball game with a nice double play. You always love when you can get two for one, especially when it wraps up the ball game. Nice win for this team today. 4-1 the final here today for Chris Singleton and our entire outstanding crew here at MLB the show. I’m John Shami saying so long.
