Cal Ripken Jr. Surprises Fans | 30th Anniversary of ‘2131’ | Baltimore Orioles

[Music] If you could say a message to Cal if he was here today, what would you say to him? Well, I would say thanks for saving baseball. I’m Margie Cove. This is my son, Chad. Larry Bloomer, uh, Orio fan. Uh, back in Memorial Stadium days, my dad was the one that influenced me about being Orio fan. and he took me to the 83 World Series game two. Yeah, I’ve been an Orio fan for 66 years and when I was 6 years old. My name’s Tony Banna. I’ve been an Orio fan since I can remember watching TV. We’ve been Orio season ticket holders my whole life. 2131 was it was such iconic. I lucked in some tickets to uh to come to the game. I was nervous about missing my high school soccer game. So, I uh talked to my coach and he’s like, “Hey, just bring me a program and we’re going to make it work.” vividly. I remember the game stopping when the numbers came down from the warehouse and and the music, the natural music and just the way it the way it all played out. And one of the things I remember the home run ball was coming right at us and it landed like 10 rows in front of us. It was like coming right at us. It was like it was amazing. I worked on the fourth floor right above where the 2131 was hanging off the warehouse. So I was asked to shoot some confetti out of the window. So every time somebody sees the video, I’m right between the two and the one. The inning ended and and everybody comes back. My brother and I just started screaming, “Take a lap. Take a lap.” The stadium was was completely lit up from cell phones and camera bumps. Yes. Never forget it. Of course, I have followed him the whole time. He’s remarkable. He’s always been so kind. the way he just played the game and and everything about him just epitomizes everything I’ve tried to raise in my daughters and everything I I I think every athlete should feel. It wasn’t just celebrating uh the Orioles or Cal Ripian. It was celebrating baseball. So, you were responsible. You were responsible. Oh my god. It was all about my dad, too. How you doing, sir? How you doing, man? Doing all right. Doing all right. You give me too much credit. Hey, buddy. How you doing, man? Good to see you. Can I get up? Yeah, you can for sure. How you doing, man? Good. Holy cow. How you doing, man? Good. Me, too. Good to see you. I would have I would have gone to the soccer game instead of coming to that game. I I hit it really well. You did? But not quite long enough to get for you to get it. I need to go 10 more rows. Yeah. 10 more rows. So, I did an interview earlier and I was uh we were talking about dad and I was all tearing up and uh so I imagine the 30 anniversary is going to going to have some emotional burst for me. I don’t know if you remember towards the end of your playing, you came over to me where I sit in the first seat and you said to me, “Thank you for always being here.” You said that to me and I will never forget that. Really, everything you’ve ever done for for the city, you were my guy, so it was just always made it easy. I’ve always been proud to watch you play. Very nice meeting you. Nice meeting you. Thanks for the kind words. Yeah. [Music] Heat. [Music]

  1. Cal will always be Baltimore's Iron Man. I only wish I could be at Saturday's honor game. Please, Orioles PR people, get it on video and post it so we all can see it. Thank you Cal for being you.
