TURNAROUND: New Orleans Saints CAN WIN with Kellen Moore and Spencer Rattler at Helm vs. Cardinals

Yes, the Saints can absolutely win on Sunday and it’s all because of new head coach Kell Moore. We got all that and a little bit of land yet for you on today’s episode of Locked on Saints. You are Locked on Saints, your daily New Orleans Saints podcast, part of the Locked On Network, your team every day. Oh, what is good Huda nation and Hudad family? I am your host, your friend Ross Jackson, New Orleans native, your New Orleans Saints expert and credentialed member of the media covering those New Orleans Saints as a Saints beat writer over at louisianaapasports.net. And on today’s episode of Locked on Saints, all new everything as the New Orleans Saints new era officially begins. We’ll highlight how why Kendre Miller is one of the most important players on the field on Sunday against the Arizona Cardinals. We had a couple of other player names there as well. But first, I want to tell you why it is that I believe the New Orleans Saints can win on Sunday and how it all starts at the top. We appreciate you very much as always. Whether it’s your first time or your next time, being here with us this time, making us your first listen and being every day here on the show, which is a proud part of the Locked on Podcast Network, your team every day. Today’s episode is brought to you by Mazda. And just like there is more to every player, more dedication, more attention to detail, there’s more to a Mazda vehicle. Stay tuned for later in the episode as we highlight this week’s moving the game forward. The New Orleans Saints can move their game forward with a win against the Arizona Cardinals to kick off this season with another opening game win. And I believe the New Orleans Saints can do it. I haven’t settled entirely on my actual prediction yet, but I want to highlight what the New Orleans Saints need to do to get a win. As we start to take a look at the game plan here and what we can expect, I want to start over on the offensive side of the football because I think that one of the biggest reasons why the New Orleans Saints can win is the guy calling plays on offense and that’s head coach Kell Moore. Kell Moore is not just any former quarterback that’s a head coach. He is the winningest quarterback in college football history. That is the youngest head coach in NFL, not in NFL history, but in the NFL right now in 2025. I think those two things help him understand exactly what it is that Spencer Rattler, the New Orleans Saint starting quarterback for week one, is going to need in order to get things going for himself. Obviously, if you want to win a football game, you need good play from your quarterback. Spencer Rattler is coming in and starting his first game in the 2025 season. He started six games in 2024, but barely played with any kind of supporting cast. now he has in his entire supporting cast, but that doesn’t mean that he needs to go out there and start letting it rip, right? I think what you really want to do with Spencer Rattler is give him a give him the support of a run game and get him in rhythm. I think those two things are going to be the most important. Nick Hunill and I were just talking about this over at our new nof pod which premieres on Tuesdays where we go through the tempo and we were kind of going through a bunch of different things and we were talking about what the Saints need to do for Spencer Rattler and I mentioned support him with the run game and get him in a rhythm and a good way that you get him in a rhythm kind of like how that phrase is in a rhythm. Get him in a rhythm. I love saying that. Uh but the way that you get him into a rhythm is to start with the short passing game aim. Get the ball out of his hands. Get him on timing routes. Get him working the RPOS’s things like that. and also give him the support of a run game. So you get him going a little bit early, get Devon Vele out there, let him be the shorthands guy, hit a couple of slants and a couple of nice timing routes, things like that, and then just allow him to be able to get into rhythm. Nobody understands that better than Kell Moore, who himself has been in that situation, who himself almost took a starting job at one point during the NFL up until his injury and now has the opportunity to help Spencer Rer not just develop now that he’s got the starting job, but take advantage of every opportunity that’s in front of him. And a big part of taking advantage of those opportunities is going to be Kell Moore building those opportunities for him. And there’s a lot of ways for him to do that. Now, let’s flip over to the defensive side. I think the other reason why the New Orleans Saints can win and what the New Orleans Saints will need to do in order to win is twofold on the defensive side. And they both come down to the defensive line. First of all, limiting Arizona on the ground. The Arizona Cardinals are a better run team than you might remember from last year. They’re in the top five in the NFL with rushes over 15 yards. The New Orleans Saints were 31st against the run in terms of yards last season. And the Arizona Cardinal were top 10 in the NFL when it came to rushing yards in total. James Connor as well as the rushing yards that you can get from a Kyler Murray out of the back field can be a lot of trouble and the New Orleans Saints struggled in that area last year, but that was last year. All new everything is the focus right now. And that is where the New Orleans Saints under new defensive coordinator Brandon Sy will need to take their biggest step forward is going to be defending the run. And I think you’re doing that with Devon Godshaw right up top. we premiered, we talked about him in a couple of episodes ago being one of the most important new additions that’s under some pressure early on in the season to just show that like, hey, I can have an impact, right? And so him being in that position allows him to be able to do that. And then I think you look at the way that this defensive line is dispersed period and really this defensive front. Now all of a sudden you have these three, four defensive tackles that are good run defenders, particularly in in Nathan Shepard. Brian Breaz has some strides to make there, but he’s going to have his opportunities because he’s going to see more one-on-one matchups. He’s g both of those guys on those three, four defensive end spots are going to have some space to attack inside and outside when it comes to these guards because not only you going to have Devon Godshaw being a space eater in the middle of the defense, but then you also have these two edge rushers, most likely Chase Young and Carl Granderson, that are rushing from that sort of wide n perspective. We talk about the wide nine perspective, we mean lining up not just outside the tackle, but outside of where a tight end would be, right? Or outside the tight end that is there. And so when you do that, you’re forcing those tackles to kind of pull and create some space. And so that’s going to create some space for those three interior guys that are now locked up in these one-on- ones with a center and two guards. It’s a good situation to be in. So, if the Saints are able to win those one-on- ones and if the linebackers and I’ll throw Alante Taylor in there, too, playing in the slot or Ugo Amadi. We’ll see if Alante Taylor’s healthy and ready to go for week one. We’ll have a better idea of that starting later on today as the Saints return to practice. But if those guys hit their run fits and fill their gaps, right, then all of a sudden, you’re in a pretty good position here in limiting that Arizona rushing attack, that’s a must. They have to be able to do that cuz if Arizona starts controlling the football, controlling the clock and doing so with its run game, it’s going to be a long day for the New Orleans Saints. The third way that I think the Saints find a way to win, if they can win, and I think that they can, is what I’m saying. I think the possibility is absolutely there. I don’t rule the Saints out this week at all, is putting pressure on Kyler Murray. And you’re going to have to do that from a bunch of different spots. You’re going to have to make him think that’s what you want to do as the New Orleans Saints defense. And a big part of that is going to be putting pressure on him. you can put pressure on them with guys like Chase Young and Carl Granderson. My bold prediction is Chase Young with two sacks in this game. I know, bold, but I’m going with it. Um, generating pressure from the second level, being able to sort of uniquely choose the most effective and efficient moments for Demario Davis to blitz, and of course utilizing Alante Taylor as a blitzer. Alante Taylor opened up the season last year with three sacks up against Bryce Young. He’s got another opportunity here up against Kyler Murray. I’m sure he’s going to see a lot of work as a pass rusher should he be out on the field. If not, Ugo Amadi doing the same thing. You saw how much they blitzed him during that game up against the Denver Broncos. That shows you exactly how that star position is going to be utilized here in Brandon Staley’s defense. I’m going to get to a few other pieces on the defense that I think are really, really important as we get to most important players. But I think those three things, if the Saints can show their improvement there, getting their quarterback into rhythm, limiting the ground game, putting pressure on the opposing quarterback, and ideally making plays at the opposing quarterback, not just putting pressure there, but getting to that quarterback and making an impact. I think that those are the three things that if the Saints really have improved those things, they put a lot of effort into improving all three of those areas in the offseason, if they have really truly improved there, the New Orleans Saints can absolutely win on Sunday. But to me, it all starts with the coaching and starts with Kell Moore. Coming up next, it goes from the coaching down to the players. Let’s take a look at some of the most important players, including running back Kendra Miller on Sunday. We got that coming up for you next as we continue on with today’s episode of Locked on Saints. Part of Lockdown Podcast Network, your team every day. It’s Mazda’s moving the game forward brought to you by those who believe it’s not just about playing the game, but it’s also about redefining it as well. Because these moments do more than just win. They help push what’s possible. They remind us about that extra yard, the shift into the extra gear, and how to keep the game moving forward. And that’s exactly what it is that the New Orleans Saints are going to be doing starting on Sunday is trying to keep the game moving forward. After an abysmal 2025 se 2024 season rather, that led to Dennis Allen being fired partway through the season. And the Saints turn to Kell Moore, who is the youngest quarterback in the NFL right now, and now new starting quarterback Spencer Rattler, to help move this team into ideally its next golden era. That’s the kind of stuff that keeps fans and players alike moving forward. The chase for the next great moment. So, when you follow what moves you, the unexpected is only the beginning. And just like there’s more to every highlight, there’s more to a Mazda vehicle. Mazda, move and be moved. Today’s episode is brought to you by Supply House. I think Kendrey Miller is one of a few of the most important players to hit the field on Sunday. And that’s up against the Arizona Cardinals. I think he might end up being one of the most important players here throughout the season. This is a guy that is rejuvenated, that has found his joy, and that is ready to play some football. Looked pretty good throughout preseason, looked very good throughout training camp. He is the bonafide RB2 now behind and next to Alvin Kamira. I say next to as well because I’m sure you’re going to see some snaps where both of them are on the field together and he’s going to free up a lot of different things. So here’s why I think Kendry Miller is one of the most important players on the football field. First of all, his ability to be able to run through contact is something that the New Orleans Saints desperately need. This Arizona Cardinals front is shifting and changing. They added Josh Schwe. They brought back Kus Campbell. They add Dvin Tomlinson on that defensive line. They drafted Walter Nolan. However, Walter Nolan’s not going to be available because he’s on the physically unable to perform list. So, he’s out for at least the first four games. But still, with Dalvin Tomlinson and those other additions, plus the draft selection of Jordan Burch as well, those guys can come in and have a pretty big impact if they get to jelling quickly. The good news for New Orleans is that the Arizona Cardinals pass rush saw some big changes. So seeing them have a major impact in the pass rush would would require all of those new pieces to gel immediately. That’s not necessarily the case in run defense though. And so for New Orleans, I think that getting Kendra Miller going could be one of the biggest and most important things that they do because you want that yards after contact, physical rushing ability, working on your side, especially if you’re having trouble creating yardage with your offensive line, picking up those yards before catch, excuse me, before contact. And so you want a guy that can create some yards after contact. And that’s what a guy like Kre Miller can do. The other thing is when it comes to that pass rush, he’s got to be able to stand back there and be a good pass blocker for you and be a good pass blocker for Spencer Rattler to keep him healthy, keep him safe, and keep him from being under pressure. And then lastly, the last thing that I wanted to take a look at here is simple. It opens up Alvin Chimera’s gate. Alvin Chimera said he wanted to be utilized more efficiently. Now, that doesn’t necessarily mean that he has to be, you know, seeing less than 200 carries or anything like that. I I think that the other thing that you’re looking for with him is can you use him more sparingly but more efficiently. And if Kre Miller gets going and catches a rhythm, then I think that that’s absolutely a thing that you can do with Alvin Chimera. And that allows him to be able to be utilized to his best extent in the run game, but also allows you to be able to have Kendrick Miller in the back field and move Alvin Chimera around. Use him in the slot, use him out wide. Heck, line him up at Wildcat if you want to. There will be a lot of new things that you can do with this New Orleans Saints offense if there is a bonafide, true, and productive RB2 finally for this team in 2025. Not only does it open up his game, but it opens up Alvin Chimera’s game as well, just like our good friend Darien Gray highlighted over at the Saints squad, which you can check out. We had a ton of fun in last night’s show doing a bunch of superlatives. So, make sure you go and check that out as well, wherever you get your podcast and on YouTube here on Locked on Saints. All right, jumping over to the defensive side. Another guy that I want to highlight that I think is going to be one of the most important players here. And really, it’s two, it’s really two players. It’s the safeties. It’s Julian Blackman and it’s Justin Reed. I I think the New Orleans Saints safeties might be their strongest position group. I’ve said that before on the show. Defensive line is certainly in there, too. But I I just we got to see it from the defensive line, right? It’s one thing to get pressure. It’s another thing to actually bring a quarterback down to the ground. It’s one thing to add all these players when it comes to what you’re trying to do in terms of improving your run game. It’s another thing to actually make the tackles, right? But at safety, in terms of identifying what it is that the offense wants to do, making adjustments, that’s all Justin Reed’s job. He is going to be incredibly important for this defense because if New Orleans wants to win this game, they’re going to have to do it with defense. I don’t see the offense going out there and scoring 30, 40 points. So, you got to keep this game tight. And so the defense is going to be in charge of doing that and helping to keep the Arizona Cardinals from putting points on the board. The Saints want to get back to a an era where you can score 21 points and win a football game. The Saints did that for a little while. Like their defense was so good that they were not allowing or they were allowing just barely over 20 points in certain games and it allowed the offense to be able to score 22 23 24 points in win football games. That’s what they got to do this year if they want to maximize their ability to win. It’s going to start on the defensive side. And a guy that’s going to be able to also help to do that beyond Justin Reed, his high football IQ, and making the adjustments on the defensive side to try to adjust to what it is that the offense is showing is the safety right next to him and Julian Blackman. Julian Blackman’s a ball hawk. The New Orleans Saints need somebody that’s going to be able to take the football away. Julian Blackman can take the football away. That gets the ball back to the offense. And so, if you’re an offense that’s struggling to find rhythm, if you’re an offense that’s struggling to put points on the board, getting the ball back is the best thing that you can do. You don’t want to shy away from the offense trying to catch a rhythm. You want to get the ball back in their hands and let them go out there and catch that rhythm. And so that’s where Julian Blackman comes in. I think he can be a major major benefit for this New Orleans Saints football team in 2025, particularly over on the defensive side. The Saints have had years of players leading the team and interceptions with three or four interceptions. Julian Blackman could be the guy that changes that. And so I think Julian Blackman is going to be a really really important piece alongside Justin Reed here on Sunday going up against the Arizona Cardinals. And the other guy that I think is going to be very important is somebody that we’ve highlighted already here on the show, Alante Taylor. If he’s out there and if he’s playing on Sunday, getting him active, allowing him to be able to do all these different things. One of our superlatives over on the Saint squad show last night was um Lan Yap. Who’s the Lan Yap guy? And when we say lanap, we mean who, you know, a little something extra. Who brings a little something extra, right? Not just does a little bit of this or whatever, but does a little bit of all of it, right? Brings a little something extra. And I think that Alante Taylor does that because he’s going to run the I mean, run the football. He’s going to be a run defender. He’s going to be a coverage guy. He’s going to be a guy that’s going to be, you know, a chaos generator. He’s going to be a pass rusher. Like, he’s going to do a lot in that star role, whether it’s him or Rugo Amati. But eventually, it needs to be Alante Taylor. And there have been some signs that Alante Taylor could be back this weekend. So, we’ll see how things go. We’ll really know more about that once we get back to practice later on today. Injury reports, all that stuff start today. So, we’ll get a better understanding at that point. But, uh, Alante Taylor to me is one of the most important players on the football field on Sunday along with Kendrick Miller, along with Julian Blackman, along with Justin Reed, and then your other obvious most important players obviously are your most important players as well. Chris Lab, Chase Young, um Demaro Davis, so on and so forth. All right, coming up next, the New Orleans Saints going for all new everything for their new era, and it’s exactly what they should be doing. We got that coming up for you next week. It’s about dang time. I want to break down some of the newness that’s going on with New Orleans that we already know, but how it is that they are so clearly embracing it. We appreciate you very much for being here with us. Last week you got the NFC South preview here on Locked on Saints, but it’s not too late to binge the entire 8 episode series over at Locked on NFL as a part of our Locked on NFL season preview. So go and check it out. We have the NFL playlist, locked on NFL playlist over on YouTube, which is part of Locked on Podcast Network, your team every day. Go and check it out. Uh the New Orleans Saints have a lot of newness going on. New head coach, new offensive coordinator, new defensive coordinator, new play callers. That means on both sides of those equations, new special teams coordinator, new coaching staff, new quarterback, new defensive look, new offensive system, new defensive system. So much has changed around this New Orleans Saints team to the point where they’ve even gotten younger and they were aided in that endeavor, right? Of course, they had the the quarterback that shall not be named for you Saints fans that care about that. um you know, ended up retiring, surprise. Tyron Matthew, shout out LSU, uh ended up retiring, surprise. Uh and so the team got a lot younger because of that. Then they made some moves as well. They moved away from guys like JT Gray, for instance, who was kind of pushing that 30-year-old spot and everything. And so the Saints made some moves. They got younger. They signed eight drafted players in the draft class. They brought in players from waiverss, which is something that we rarely ever see the Saints do during roster cuts. were always so focused on just keeping their guys, keeping their guys, keeping their guys that all of a sudden they’re bringing in this undrafted free agent rookie and that undrafted free agent rookie and this secondyear guy and they’re trading for this secondyear player and that secondyear player and this thirdyear player. Like the Saints did a whole lot of that work over the course of the offseason. They kept uh two undrafted free agents on their initial 53 technically three with Xavier Truss being added uh via waiverss, but you know, they kind of went these these different ways to be able to bring these guys in. And so for New Orleans, like this is truly all new everything. And after years and years and years of trying the same thing and expecting different results while saying that as they try that that it’s insanity to try different things and expect different results or try try the same thing and expect different results while flying in their own face when it comes to that conversation. They finally embrace the newness and this is exactly what the New Orleans Saints needed. They’re not going to use the word rebuild. We’ve talked about that before here on the show, but this is so clearly exactly what that is, right? It’s a retool. It’s a refresh, maybe you want to call it, call it whatever you want. It’s a reload. We’ve used that before here on the show. Uh, but the good thing is that the Saints have embraced it. They have embraced the idea of doing something different and an attempt to achieve a different result. It’s a first outside of the Clint Kubak hire. Let me give them credit for the Clint Kubak hire. But then last year, you saw all of it come to a head. Like the Saints hadn’t fired a head coach in season in decades and they moved on from Dennis Allen. Then they go out and they hire the NFL’s youngest head coach now and Kell Moore. Bring in a new innovative offensive mind to be their head coach. First time that they’ve done that since Shawn Peyton was hired back in 2006. So on and so forth. And now they’re embracing it, right? Gold jerseys to open up the season. Brand new. New helmets coming later on this season. Heck, they’re even painting the end zone gold for the first time. and what feels like forever in the Superdome going into this game. The New Orleans Saints have adequately, not adequately, more than effectively, more than adequately embraced everything that’s new. And I believe Kell Moore is at the top of that or or a part of the top of that. The Saints have now brought in Thomas Deitrov to come and help out as a consultant, right? They had uh Dave Ziggler doing that. Then Dave Ziggler went on to become the assistant general manager with the with the Tennessee Titans. They have Randy Mueller already in the building. They have Scott Lahan in the building. They already have Jeff Ireland who’s another former GM in the building. They have gone out there and gotten guys that have found success, brought them to this organization and said, “Argue with us and tell us what we’re doing wrong.” And I love that. I think that’s great. I think it’s a very, very good thing to do. Uh, so with all of that considered, the Saints are ready to embrace their new era. And that new era begins Sunday up against the Arizona Cardinals. It could begin on a high note. It could begin on a low note. Neither of which will be representative about what the entire new era actually looks like. We’ll have to wait and see. But in any case, I think the New Orleans Saints are finally doing what it is that they have long since needed to do, which is embrace where they are in their NFL lifespan and life cycle. They’ve done that adequately in my opinion and embrace something new. Tie themselves to something new. And they have done that. And they have done it to uh like the the 10th degree, the nth degree, whatever that phrase is. 10th degree, the nth degree, I don’t know which one it was. Um, but they have done it and they and they’ve done it big here so far. And I think Kell Moore is a big part of that. As is Brandon Staley, if I’m being completely honest, I think the defensive changes that the Saints are undergoing this offseason in terms of prototypical changes when it comes to their edge rushers, their front change, the way that they play, the way that they play coverage, where the communications coming from, all of it has changed. And a lot of that is in the vision of Brandon Staley. Uh, one thing that didn’t change is that Jay Kainer is still on this active roster. I wanted to break this down because I thought that this was a really interesting move. So, the Saints fill the roster spot that they opened up with JT Gray being released, which was a big surprise. You can catch that in yesterday’s episode. But then they bring back Jake from the practice squad up to the active roster. Why do this? I think it’s because it’s a it’s actually a good move. It’s a logical move. New Orleans will have to have seven players inactive. They can’t have 53 players active on game day. They got to have 46. It’s the NFL stupidest rule, but they have to. They have to have seven players inactive. You might as well have one of your player, your inactive players be your emergency third quarterback because you can’t pull your emergency third quarterback from the act from the practice squad. Has to be an active roster person that is inactive for that game. So, I think that’s one of the reasons why you’re going to see Jake on the active roster. He’ll be the emergency third quarterback on Sunday. So, some things are new, some things are not, but the New Orleans Saints mostly brand new heading into this season. That’s exactly where I think that they need to be. All right, before we get into what’s coming up in tomorrow’s episode, I want to tell you about a couple different things that I want to make sure that I highlight. Uh, first of all, go back and watch yesterday’s Squad show. Myself, Dylan Sanders, John Hendris, Lance Moore, Darien Gray. Amazing, super fun show. one of the most fun hours I’ve ever had creating content. So, please go and check out the squad show from yesterday. It was super fun. We did a bunch of superlatives, including some that were like New Orleans food themed and everything like that. It was just a blast. And Dylan does probably one of the funniest ad reads ever, mostly by accident. So, go and check that out as well. We’ll have that over for you. Um, you can also make sure that you’re finding us each and every day here on Locked on Saints. Don’t forget that we’re here Monday through Friday and then some here throughout the season. 1. We can an will win because Kyler Murray never beaten Brandon Staley! when he was a defensive coordinator for the rams an head coach for the chargers! 3 match ups no wins! 😂

  2. I’m really interested in seeing Kool-Aid cover Harrison Jr. I’m still not sold on him being a #1 corner, but I do think he’s better than the rest of the guys on the roster.
