FA signings/farm rankings in Trout-Ohtani era

  1. this is the arte moreno ownership in a nutshell. a fatal combination of absolute cluelessness about how to evaluate baseball talent effectively with a desire to look superficially invested while not putting anything of substance into the actual heart of any healthy organization (ie, player development and the minor leagues). what a glaring indictment. nothing we all didn’t already know though.

  2. Pujols: R: 561, H: 1180, 2B: 214, 3B: 1 , HR: 222, RBI: 783

I can only wish we had a guy that sucked that bad this year.

  3. A couple of things wrong with this list.

    1) Simmons was a trade not a signing

    2) Pujols and CJ Wilson were perfectly fine signings. Take them off the list. Wilson got injured in year 3 and had a sort if bounce back in year 4 to be a solid starter

Also its almost like 8 years of bad drafting impacts the farm. FYI 2018 was signing Ohtani and drafting of Jo Adell 2019 was carried by Adell and Canning

  4. Arte spends money but he has 0 competent baseball boggleheads to make the right decisions for on field baseball product. Remember that report showing more marketing members than actual baseball guys And then you see the dodgers have created new jobs to continue filling gaps for player development and scouting

  5. If you remove the $$$, all the ones I remember that were decent their WAR totals support it(ie CJ Wilson, Ty Anderson, Andrelton Simmons etc), The ones I remember were really awful(ie Loupe, Valbuena, Blanton) all have negative WAR. Simmons I remember was very good, but most of the others were okay at best. The Angels have had some really awful signings though–particularly since 2017 only 9 of 19 had any positive WAR and only 7 have more than 1.0 WAR to their credit.

  6. That Rendon contract is an absolute robbery…I can’t even believe that it is possible to sign a worse contract…3.9 WAR??! Holy moly….

  7. Since the Blanton signing in 2012, the only starting pitchers the Angels have signed to a multi-year contract are Tyler Anderson and Yusei Kikuchi.

FYI Dexter Fowler’s figures aren’t correct because he came by trade and the Cardinals retained all but $1.75 million. Likewise, the Angels didn’t pay the full contracts listed for some of the other players like Carlos Estevez, so his contract was better than it looks here.

Drury is one of the weirdest ones on the list. +2 WAR in 2023, -2 WAR in 2024. It’s one of the most typical Angels things to happen.
