The NHL’s Salt Lake City franchise has officially been named the Utah Mammoth. Following over 850,000 fan votes in a branding campaign led by owners Ryan and Ashley Smith. Unveiled at a Delta Center press event, the new name and logo featuring a mammoth with design elements referencing Utah’s mountains in state shape replaces the placeholder name Utah Hockey Club. The franchise moved from Arizona, where it previously operated as the Coyotes, to Utah after being purchased by Smith Entertainment Group. The team will retain its light blue, black, and white color scheme, and Tusks Up is set to be its rallying cry, referencing mammoth fossils found throughout the state. The Utah Mammoth’s logo features a charging mammoth with snowcapped peaks symbolic of the Wasach Mountains and a tusk shaped like a U. The name pays homage to the ancient mammoths that once roamed Utah. more than 10,000 years ago.
