Plus, we’ll check out some other rules that might change how Mike Greer goes about his business when it comes to the trade deadline. Uh, and how it’s going to affect the Sharks in the 2526 season. Plus, uh, we have the rookie faceoff roster. So, we’ll go through that and start getting you ready as hockey will be here next weekend. Not this weekend, but next weekend. So, before we do all that, do want to let you guys know that today’s episode is brought to you by FanDuel. Download the FanDuel app now by visiting FanDuel.com and win $300 in bonus bets if your first $5 bet wins. So, uh, let’s start with the exciting potentially exciting news, um, that Sam Dickinson might be eligible to play in the AHL as soon as this October. So, uh, as a quick reminder, the previous CHL NHL agreement, uh, so allow basically restricted players from, um, not being able to jump to the AHL until they hit certain, uh, requirements. Uh, one of those requirements was either or the requirements were either you had to play four full seasons in the CHL or hit the age of 20. I think it’s like by January of uh middle of January of your birth year or what or whatever the year is, right? So, um so for players who like Sam Dickinson who is a June birthday who’s played three full seasons in the CHL and playing in the OHL um not eligible to play in the AHL. you saw players get through like Luca Kenyon last year who was 19 when the season started. He was eligible to play because he turned 20 before uh at sometime in December allowed him to go play. He was a little bit older kid, right? Um guys like Igor Shernes who were in Casper Holtzen uh were in either European leagues or you know over in Russia um those guys when they were drafted um eligible to play in the AHL. no questions asked because they weren’t in the CHL when they were drafted, right? So, Caspin was in uh was in Lia, came over, played in the OL after his draft year. Remember, he spent some time with the Barracuda before going back to the London uh where he won a Memorial Cup. Igor Sherneshov had his contract uh you know terminated over in Russia was able to come over and he is expected to play in the AHL this season. Guys like Sam Dickinson, Quinton Musty unelig or ineligible to play with the new CBA that’s starting in the 2627 season. There’s going to be a rule that allows each team to designate one 19year-old player per season to play in the AHL despite not hitting those requirements, this exemption, right? And this is a great move for like I mean everybody likes this, right? Because you know it’s not just the Sharks, right? with Quinton Musty last season, Sam Dickinson this year, like you know, you look at a guy like Becca Senica for the Ducks, like every team has like one prospect where they’re clearly too good to play in the OHL or play in the WHL or wherever and they need that next jump, but they’re ineligible because they’ve signed their ELC, you know, and once you sign your ELC, you’re no longer uh eligible for college. Now, we’re seeing more and more teams be, you know, not as proactive with signing their EL with signing their ELCs to give players options, right? And you’re seeing guys jump to college and going from, you know, like it’s it’s the wild west right now when it comes to player movement um you know, across these junior leagues and then with their ability to kind of have more choices, right? where before, right, you play CHL, then you probably go to the AHL, uh, and then you, you know, go pro. And now it’s guys who playing in the CHL going to the NCAA, guys who are in the NCAA going to the CHL. Uh, now you’re going to get a straight jump from, you know, younger players going from the CHL to the AHL. One thing though is it hasn’t officially been passing. So, the NHL and the NHL players association have agreed on this, like this is going to happen, right? Um, the hope is right now that they can work with the CHL to get this going before the season starts. Um, but it’s going to happen. If it doesn’t happen this year, it’s going to happen next year. And then you could look at a guy like Joshua Ravensburgen uh or like as a potential player like maybe Ravensburg’s ready to come play AHL games as a goalie. Again, like that’s a conversation for a different day. But this is a great thing for everybody with the exception, I guess, of the CHO who’s going to continue to lose star players. But they’re going to lose star players anyway as players now just have more options, right? if they don’t go to the AHL, well, I can just go to college and get used to playing against older competition. So, it hasn’t officially passed yet, but the hope is that this will give the Sharks another option for especially for a player like Sam Dickinson, right? We’ve discussed a lot this off season about kind of what to do with Sam Dickinson. I always and I still think even if this goes through, Sam Dickson is going to get at least nine games in the NHL where he either going to let him see how he does and if he’s good, he sticks around. Awesome. If not, you can send him to the AHL and let him continue to marinate and develop um as he gets used to playing against grown men. So, I think that’s what’s going to happen at some point is hopefully though fingers crossed hopefully this goes through because again being in that stuck between that position of you’re clearly too good to go back and play in the OL. Um, right. Sam Dickinson OHL defenseman of the year, CHL defenseman of the year. Uh, broke London Knight’s records for points as a defense. Like there’s nothing left for Sam Dickinson to do in the OHL. Like there there’s just nothing. and the things he needs to work on, which are processing the game at a higher pace, he’s just not going to be able to do that in the OHL because the competition isn’t ready, isn’t good enough for him, uh, to be able to continue to work on things. So, the hope is he gets this done. Um, and again, it gives the Sharks some flexibility where they don’t have to send like it doesn’t have to be an eitheror, right? This doesn’t have to be NHL or OHL. You can use the AHL, which is a development league. That’s their whole motto is developing stars like etc etc. Like that is their whole thing is developing players. You can use the AHL for what it’s for and and getting a guy like Sam Dickinson ready to go. What about Michael Misa? Well, he’s not eligible. So, part of the stipulation is they have to be 19, right? And maybe Misa, who’s played three full seasons because he was an exemp special, you know, exemption status player, has already played three full seasons. Maybe you could make the case. And you saw, you know, Shane Wright got to get in a little bit early. But I still think the plan is for Misa to play in the NHL because again like you saw the Sharks successfully do this with Will Smith last year and it’s much easier to hide a forward than it is a defenseman, right? You can be better about the matchups. um like it it’s just it’s not as much pressure on a forward especially when it comes to the defensive responsibilities as it is a defenseman, right? So, Michael Misa, I think, is still going to play in the NHL. Um I think he’d have to have an absolute horrific start to even consider going back to the OHL. And even then, I still think the Sharks would be like, you know what, we’ll manage this. We’ll get you through this. and we think that we’re going to be able to, you know, we think you’re still going to be a better player if you stay stick around. So, uh, and you know, clearly the Sharks want to sign Michael Misa to his entry-le contract. It’s going to happen at some point. Um, and we’re just kind of waiting right now on how the Sharks manage contracts here. Uh, so we’ll see. again, Dickinson hopefully playing in and if, side note, if Dickinson only plays nine games and spends the rest of the year uh in the AHL with a Barracuda, his contract will slide and it doesn’t officially will start until next year, just like we saw with William Ecklund, right, where he played uh, you know, a full season in the AHL, got eight games, and then got sent back. That way, his contract wouldn’t kick in. We could potentially see that with Dickinson as well. And we know Mike Greer’s pretty ruthless when it comes to like cont these type of contract things. So, uh, we’ll see. But if Dickinson’s killing it down in the AHL, maybe he comes like a mid-season call up type of thing and he kind of spends the rest of the season. So, we’ll see. U, but hopefully hopefully Sam Jose is here to stay. That that’s the hope. So, uh, we’re going to talk about some of the new CBA rules, including, uh, paper transactions going bye-bye, uh, as well as, uh, the retention the new retention policy. So, uh, we’ll get to that here in just one second. Most people can’t name all their financial accounts or even what they’re worth, whether it’s their 401ks, properties, or investments. So, we have a bunch of new rules kind of starting to make their way into the league, right? Uh, one of the like rules that the Sharks don’t really have to worry about right now that are going to be in effect, uh, is like the playoff salary cap, even if the Sharks miraculously get to the playoffs, uh, we’re nowhere near the cap ceiling. So, not a rule the Sharks have to worry about now, but hopefully eventually the Sharks will have to start to worry about that. Um, there’s also changes to the LTI where how much money you can actually like uh benefit from the LTI. They’re trying to kind of limit that where teams are only getting uh it’s about a little under $4 million of LTI relief. Like even if you put a $10 million LTI contract on the books, you’re only getting like $4 million of relief. So, something to keep in mind for a team like the Canadians or the team like Vegas uh who have big LTI contracts, you’re not getting as much of that back now, especially for player, you know, like uh some of these players who are expected to I know both those guys aren’t ex uh you know, between Petrangelo and uh Carrie Price like those guys aren’t expected to return, but this is something to keep in mind. you know, like Florida last year with Kachchuck, right? You knew Kachchuck was coming back. Um, but they got to use that like full $10 million uh benefit of his contract. Like you’re going to see less and less of that. So, uh, for for teams that are using that LTI, they’re going to kind of limit how much money you can actually uh be able to access basically. So, um, other ones that are more sharks related, right? Um, and we’ll start with the the paper loans. So, this is a strategy a lot of teams utilize where they will send a player down to the AHL for a day, right? So, say you have a game on Tuesday, um, they’ll put a player down in the AHL on Wednesday, then Thursday, they’ll recall him. Uh, and what this is doing is basically is when this player isn’t on the cap, right? And usually, right, these players are making, you know, a million dollar, like less than a million dollars, right? Because they’re they’re typically kind of borderline NHL players or they’re ELC contracts or, right, these are typically smaller contracts. But when you’re not don’t have that player on the roster, all that money that you save goes towards your um deadline cap space, right? you’re kind of like saving up and saving all these little pennies and then by the end by the time you get to the deadline, you have a kind of a bigger fund to pull from. They’re getting rid of that. So, what happens now is uh teams who send down a player, that player has to be down there for a game. And they’re not very clear if this is an AHL game or an NHL game or if it’s whichever comes first between the two. I’m trying to kind of uh league. So yeah. Um most reports of AHL and play one game before being called up. So yeah, I guess they have to play one AHL game before calling up. Um the only exception is goalies where if you don’t have a healthy goalie, right? That’s kind of always the the exception there is they’re always going to they they want you to have two healthy goalies. So, um, so you’re going to see especially like around the trade deadline because, right, remember the rule is a player has to be on an AHL roster come the trade deadline to be eligible to play in the AHL playoffs. So, you’re going to see more finagling of the roster around that time to get some of these younger players. You know, guys like Colin Graph, right, who paper transaction last year, Jack Thompson, paper transaction last year, send him down to the AHL uh that Friday, bring him back up on Saturday so they can play in their NHL game, but still be eligible to play in the AHL playoffs because they want them to get that experience, right? you’re going to have to see a little bit more like you’re not going to see those paper transactions anymore because players need to like they have to report for an AHL game uh and play in an AHL game before they’re able to call up, right? Um, I know back in the day you actually had to like report to camp like report to like so if you were say like back in the day when the Sharks uh worious like they’d have to fly them to San Jose and like they’d have to actually be in in in the building before you going back. Luckily now a lot of teams are like either really close or they share facilities etc. So you don’t have to worry about that as much. But, um, this is one of those things that kind of help protect players from, you know, kind of like cuz, right, you get more money when you’re in the NHL. You get those like it’s it’s just it’s it’s a little bit shady business by teams, right? Like every team kind of does it, but it’s just one of those things where you kind of have to like like let’s let’s just take care of the players. But anyway, another big change when it comes to the rules now is the uh retention policy. So, teams, sharks included, have done this where um trade deadline, right? We’ll retain 50%. We’ll find a third team. We’re going to that player is technically going to be on that team for like two seconds. They’re going to retain 50% of whatever is left. So 50% and then 25% basically of the contract, right? Half of half is 25%. So and that way whichever team is acquiring said player only has to pay 25% of the contract. That rule is going out the window now too. Basically, it’s still possible to do it, but the player has to be Now, a team cannot retain a contract that has already been retained within 75 regular season days of the first retention. So, basically, a team has to acquire someone kind of like before Christmas, around Christmas time, right? And then that player is eligible to be retained again coming into a um like at the trade deadline. So like if the Sharks, you know, acquired someone uh or like if say the Sharks traded uh like Jeff Skinner for example, I’m like, “Hey, we’ll we’ll retain $1.5 million uh of his, you know, we’ll retain half and then we’re going to trade him to team, you know, the New Jersey Devils or whatever. and then the Devils get to the deadline and they’re like we don’t want Jeff Skinner like we’ll trade like type of thing. So that’s kind of how it works. You’re not going to see is you’re not going to see those like you know three team trades where you know that middle team gets a little bit like a third round pick to kind of retain or like they’ll get like a prospect or something. You’re not going to see those type of trades anymore. So Mike Greer, you know, weaponizing your cap space here. And I know he only has one retention slot left right now, but the days of kind of weaponizing your cap space for at the trade deadline are are kind of gone now with that unfortunately. So um and again like you kind of get it too where teams are like the whole focus of the CBA was trying to fix some of these LTI issues and some of these kind of cap loopholes. Uh, and this is one that kind of gets fixed. So, um, we’re going to talk about the rookie faceoff roster here in a second. Uh, where we’re going to see Michael Misa hopefully with the brand new ELC. Uh, which other Sharks players we are going to see um, next week. Next week, guys. Next week, uh, down in I think it’s Irvine down in Southern California. Uh, so we’ll get to that in just one second. The NFL season is almost here and FanDuel is making sure you’re ready for kickoff for a can’t miss offer. Right now, new customers can bet just $5. And if your first bet wins, you’ll get $300 in bonus bets to use across the app. Uh great thing about FanDuel is it’s got you covered if you want to do kind of some same game parlays. Uh if you want to do some seasonl long bets, Joe Burrow MVP. Uh or if you’re just looking for a quick and easy way to add a little bit more energy to your Sundays. Uh I like the Eagles winning on Thursday. I think they romp the Cowboys. So put five bucks down on the Eagles and you could be looking at $300 in bonus bets if the Eagles win. So if you’re ready to play, download the FanDuel app by visiting fanuel.com to get started. That’s fanduel.com to place your first $5 bet. I’m also super excited to tell you about my new favorite jeanswware brand, Doer. I’ve been living in their performance denim straight brand and honestly, they’ve completely changed the game for me. The best part, Derer just opened a brand new store in Hayes Valley, and let me tell you, you’re going to want to stop by. I’ve been wearing Doer jeans to work. Uh, one, they look great, right? You want to look good at work. Nobody wants to be that guy or like that girl at work. Everyone’s just like, “This person’s a slob.” You don’t have to worry about that with Doer. But they also feel great. They have the five times the stretch of traditional denim, so you get that perfect fit without feeling restricted. Um, they’re antibacterial, which means they stay fresh longer, so you can wear more and wash less. Der combines classic jeans style with the comfort and performance of athletic wear. And mention my code locked on SF for 15% off your first order. Or shop online at shopder.com/lockedonssf. That’s due for 15% off. All right. Uh let’s talk about the rookie roster. So um It’s always nice just this nice like you’ve been wandering the desert all summer long waiting for hockey and yes we we got a nice little like cool sip in you know July middle of or beginning of July when you get the rookie showc like the shark and it’s all sharks on sharks right and it’s super fun but now get to kind of see some of these guys in action some of these guys who could be playing for the Sharks and should be playing for the Sharks this year. So, uh, let’s get to look at the roster here. So, the Sharks put this out, uh, today or Tuesday. So, forwards, Bill Beaststead, Igor Shernishoff, Colin Graph, Casper Halton, Max Heis, uh, Zack Hoben, Cam Lun, Michael Misa, Quinton Musty, Ted Merchant, uh, Jake Stewart, Luke Torrance, and Carson Wetch. Um, defenseman Jack Bar, Noah Beck, Luca Canyone, Sam Dickinson, Jake Furlong, uh, Braden H, Matias Havlin, and Hashi, uh, Wong. Then the goalenders, Matt Davis, Christian Kersh, and Joshua Ravensber. So, um, a lot of names, right, I just threw at you, uh, there, but like there’s a lot of potential NHL players on here. Um, you know, like holograph should be playing in the NHL this year. Uh, Michael Misa playing in the NHL here, right? Uh, perform like type of thing. Luca Canon is probably going to get some NHL games this year at some point. Sam Dickinson probably going to get some NHL games at this point, you know, and guys like Beast, Chernov, Musty are all going to be pushing for NHL games at this point. You would hope so, right? Um, so lot of fun. Like this is going to be a really fun time here w with some of these guys. I know last year, right, we had Will Smith and and Melbrinia and that was like pretty sick. Not going to lie. But that like the the Sharks here have like a a plethora of people that they can put out here. But uh really quickly just like some of the the tryyouts because there are some new names in there. Some of the try out guys here. Um, so you have Zack Hobin who’s um playing with the Ottawa 67s in the OL. Um, not much production last year. He only had four points including three goals in 51 games, but um, you know, like for these, you just kind of want to see how they do and see some of the traits there. Um, another try out guy here, uh, Jake Stewart. That name sounds familiar. Uh, Brad Stewart, son. Uh, Sharks legend Brad Stewart. Uh, shout out to Shank who kind of uh, you know, put that one out there. Um, the USHL, he played for the he’s, uh, played for the US national team last year. 23 games, seven goals, five assists, 12 points. So, you know, pretty decent production there. Um, Luke Torrance uh, playing with the Ashawa Generals. Um, last year in Ashawa, he played 64 games, 24 goals, 29 assists, 53 points. So, I I think um, let’s see. Is he eligible? He might be a potential like signing type of guy, right? When you you see like Lucas Vanro for like oh I think he’s going to universe he’s supposed to be going to University of Nor uh New Brunswick this year in the youth sports but he’s 21. if he performs well, like he could be a potential AHL type of contract guy. And you saw like a guy like Lucas Vanro, right, who had a really great camp last year and parlayed that into a really good AHL season and part of that kind of identity line for the Barracuda. like this could be another one of those type of performance where if he has a really good uh performance here and and kind of goes into camp, he could earn, you know, at least at an amateur try out and then if he plays well in camp and during the preseason, he could be a potential AHL type of player and he’s got good size, 6’1, 198 pound left wing. Um, you know, and he’s he’s had pretty solid production. Like he’s had 20 plus goals the past two seasons in the OHL. um that that could be a guy that you’re kind of keeping an eye on right there as a potential Barracuda player. So, um defensively, right, uh Jack Bar is another, uh tryyout guy. So, he played with Harvard last year. Um he not much production-wise, uh you know, but he’s 6’2, 29 pounds, right-handed shot. Noah Beck, who we got a little bit of a taste of last year as a Shark signed him out of college. I think he’s gonna, you know, he got one Barracuda game last year, but uh played with Arizona State last year in college. Um and then I think that was it. And all the other guys are like kind of homegrown guys between Kenyon, Dickinson, Furlong. I know H was a a guy that they signed um you know previously but like you’re getting a fair amount of uh fair amount of Sharks players and guys you know you like Hav and H and Furlong and Canon and Dickinson like all those guys should be around San Jose this year. So I’m really excited like I’m really excited about those roster. I think uh and playing against the Ducks like the Ducks have a very deep uh talent you know prospect pool as well and like again you don’t want to try to take too much away and we’ll we’ll get into it a little bit more next week when we uh like as we get closer to it but I’m really excited like Misa and Dickinson and Musty like all these guys kind of playing against some other competition like I I kind of have high hopes for as weird as it sounds I kind of have high hopes for for this rookie face off and I’m really looking forward to it again as we’ve uh wandered the desert and we’re going to be ready to to get into uh some real hockey here really soon. So, that’s going to be it for me today. We’ll be back probably you probably just get five episodes a week. Uh we are officially back to uh normal schedule next week at five a week, but especially if we get the Misa news. Uh Misa Carrie Price news question mark. Uh you’re probably just going to get five episodes because I’m just really excited to talk about the Sharks this year. So um anyway, make sure you are following along wherever you get podcast and of course you can watch on YouTube as well. Uh the push to 5K. If you haven’t subscribed yet, now’s the perfect time. It’s gonna be a really fun year, guys. Really fun year this season. So, uh, make sure you follow along. Like I said, wherever you get the wherever you get podcast, watch on YouTube. Till tomorrow, question mark. Bye, friends.
The NHL’s new CBA rules are shaking up the San Jose Sharks’ roster strategy. Could 19-year-old Sam Dickinson join the Barracuda this season? A game-changing amendment now allows one underage player per team in the AHL, potentially fast-tracking prospects’ development. It’s still waiting for final approval from the CHL, but it could allow Dickinson to continue his development in the AHL.
But that’s not all – the league is cracking down on LTIR loopholes and paper transactions. Teams can no longer stash high-salaried players on LTIR for cap relief, with a new $4 million limit regardless of contract size. The days of shuffling players between NHL and AHL rosters for cap gymnastics are over too.
Salary retention rules are also getting an overhaul, impacting how the Sharks can leverage their cap space at the trade deadline. No more retaining salary on already-retained contracts within 75 days, closing a popular loophole.
Meanwhile, the Sharks’ rookie camp roster is packed with potential. From Michael Misa to Jake Stuart (son of Sharks legend Brad), who will stand out and earn an AHL deal?
Tune in for an in-depth breakdown of these rule changes and how they’ll reshape San Jose’s roster moves this season and beyond.

It’s great news is this gets ratified by the CHL. Dickinson could really contribute to the Cuda making the playoffs again which would benefit everyone. He can get called up to the Sharks after the deadline and back to the Cuda for the playoffs. If he starts the season with the Cuda it might also save Jack Thompson from being exposed to waivers.
If it happens I think this is the best news of the offseason besides drafting Michael Misa
Oh wow it slides? That's insane.
If this portion of the CBA is ratified/approved in time, this is very good news indeed! Dickinson cannot be hidden like Misa can and should he not be ready for the NHL, the AHL is the next logical step for his development.
I hope he is like Pickles, comes in and just plays NHL games, but his decision making has been in question in the OHL so that will be exasperated in the NHL/AHL.
This also could positively effect the 50 contract discussion. If they make the Price trade sending two contracts to Montreal, Prices contract is added, they slide Wallenius as he is playing in the SHL, sign Misa to his ELC and Dickinson plays more than nine games in the NHL, the Sharks are back at 50.
But with Dickinson possibly playing in the AHL they go down to 49. I think GMMG should be at 48 before the start of the season. It would allow him needed flexibility before and during the upcoming TDL for make moves (like a player becomes available via waivers, trades, etc.).
I like the new rules that are being put in place especially when it comes to a playoff cap. Teams like Vegas have been able to LTIR players but played them in the playoffs as they suddenly became healthy when the post season started.
Like you I am excited hockey is about back! Will not be able to watch the rookie faceoff live but am hoping there is a way to watch it the next week.
The Sharks roster looks stacked with players that will play heavy NHL and AHL minutes. To me it is a glimpse of the future to a greater extent than we have seen in the past. I would highlight a player or two but I honestly am looking forward to seeing so many of them I would end up listing most the roster (lol).
The future is teal!
This is Ideal! He’s too good for the CHL not sure if he is ready for NHL and we shouldn’t rush him.
The potential for the Cuda to add musty Chernyshov Halltunen Lund, and Dickinson. That’s a lot of really good talent to replace the vets that we lost.
