A KEY piece to Sixers’ season UPDATES on health status – Locked On Philadelphia 76ers
Welcome in to another fun-filled edition of Locked On 76ers. Keith Pompei, Mark Farzetta. Couple of things we got to cover today. One, a key piece gives us a health update. I’ll tell you why Jared McCain is a key piece to this upcoming 76ers season. And um hey Keith, are you from Philly? Hell yeah. That’s more like it. All that and more on this edition of Lockdown 76ers. You are Locked On 76ers, your daily Philadelphia 76ers podcast, part of the Locked on Podcast Network, your team every day. And we do thank you for making Locked On 76, who’s your first listen every day. Part of the Locked On Network, your team every day. Uh so just to uh set this up real quick in our second segment we’re going to be examining uh the hell na heard round the world Keith and that has to do with Paul George being asked by uh I show speed or just speed I guess if you know him for short there uh about whether or not you’re from Philly and he’s like hell no I’m not from Philly or that kind of thing. So we’ll talk about that but uh we did get an update on the health of Jared McCain by Jared McCain. I think my best guess is that he said this during the Exfinity Mobile Arena naming unveiling in South Philadelphia is the Wells Fargo Center. Okay, that’s where it happened. Okay, good. Cuz I saw he and VJ Edgecom were addressing the media while they unveiled the new name of the once Core State Center, the once first Union Center, the once well uh Wakovia Center, and the once Wells Fargo Center. and now Exfinity Mobile Arena. While there were dropping in the banner on that new name, VG Edgecom and Jared McCain addressed the media where Jared McCain said, quote, “The injury he suffered, the torn miniscus injury that he suffered in December of last year has him on pace right now for at least being ready for training camp, which gets underway in just a couple of weeks.” On pace, but has not been quote medically cleared yet. Keith hasn’t even gotten an update from the doctors as to whether or not he could really do everything. What do you know about the status and what do you make of the status update from Jared McCain? Well, you know, I just want to so my my daughter say my sister, you know, my my my daughter suffered like the same injury. Um, and it’s one of those things where it’s typically like a nine month like if you you have the surgery and and stuff like that. Um, so the fact that he’s saying that I’m on pace and I haven’t heard anything. Um, we haven’t heard that there’s been a setback. So to me, it just looks like the 76ers are are being extremely extremely cautious. So I’m not concerned at all. Like when I see him, I’m walking like when you see videos of him, I’m trying to pay attention to if I see a limp, if I see other things. you know, during the basketball season. I saw him doing the treadmill. I saw him doing a lot of other things that you basically do in this progression. So, to me, it’s one of those things you don’t want to rush him back too soon because for fear of a setback. So, the fact that he said that I am on pace for that, I’m not alarmed at all. I I really am not. I’m not alarmed because I feel like the Sixers feel like, you know, he’s uh the type of guy who’s gonna um who’s gonna be a major part of what they have moving forward. I also think that when we talk about the NBA, you talk about the treatment that they’re getting around the clock and all that stuff. I think that he’s going to be fine. I I really do. The fact that he said that I’m on pace and then when we talk to the Sixers and stuff, they always incorporate him. So, right now, knock on wood, um, you know, I’m not alarmed by what he what he has to say. I want to go back to something you said. You know, you watch the videos or whatever and you see him just walking around in the, you know, really baggy pants and all that stuff, you know, and uh they uh I I’m breaking it down like Zapruder film. Like you talk about breaking down film just to see whether or not he’s walking with a limp. my mind jumps immediately to Joel Embiid in at the con I think it was the Meek Mill concert where he just had one of his first or second knee surgeries and he’s out there dancing around and I’m like well the knee looks good I guess so I guess he’s doing okay. So yeah, there’s no limp. There’s there’s nothing to worry about there with Jerry McCain as far as noticeable when he was walking around at the Exfinity Mobile Arena uh unveil. Here’s the the thing I want to add though. I’m sorry about that. I just want to add this. It’s just like so you see him walking around with the knee sleeve, but it’s it’s weird because you know it’s one of those things like I said where my daughter Sorry, somebody just knocked at the door like come on dude. Can you see I’m doing a podcast player? Chill. Anyway, it’s very like chill. But but but here’s the thing like when you when you look at it and you look at it and and you like to me because again because my daughter is going through the same injury like you look at it and you see where certain people have a limp in their walk you don’t see that you see the sleeve so you see that he is being extra cautious so to me and I look at the size of the leg his like normally when there’s some apathy there after they have surgery it look like his leg is strong. So again, I’m not concerned. I just feel like they’re being extremely cautious. Yeah. And and as they should be because I don’t I mean I don’t want the Sixers to go down another path of another player being concerned about the way they’re handling his injury. So I’m on team McCain here when it comes to Jay. Yeah. And you come back, you come back as healthy as possible. Now you talked about him and his role with with his team with the in the future and all that. right now, even in this season, I see him as being a key piece to the Sixers having any ounce of success because again, I’m judging all this, as most people, I believe, are judging this is whatever they get from Paul George and Joel Embiid, that’s gravy. But I just want to continue to see the continued improvement of a guy like Jared McCain and Tyrese Maxi and VJ Edge, all these younger players. Of course, Tyrese Maxi, the most veteran of them by far, but see these guys continue to take step forward and and if I see Jared McCain really take a step forward, like think about this from last year, we were expecting a guy to be in and out of the GLeague only because that’s what Nick Nurse told us during training camp. And not only is he not a G-League player, but you’re talking about a guy in the first 23 games of his NBA career looked like the rookie of the year. So, if this guy can surprise you two times over, two two years in a row, I can’t imagine what the ceiling could be for a young player like this if obviously he comes back at 100% and his injury is managed properly. I think you’re muted, brother. Okay. I was trying to Yeah, that I mean and and what you said is 100% true because I mean let’s think think of this year like we’re looking at it and you know right now unless Joel Embiid and Paul George come back and are playing at extremely high level we got a middle of a road team in Philadelphia right and it’s all about making sure that this guy is is going to be able to um come along and perform. See the thing is typically what happens when you have a knee injury like that. So once you are cleared to practice in the play, you know when once he plays he’s not going to be 100% over that injury. Like you can come back nine months and practice for nine months but then another five months after that is when you get to the level of where you know you’re 100% injuryfree. like you just don’t like, you know, you you go back and you elevate and you do all these other things. So, right now when you’re looking at it, you’re saying to yourself like, are we really going to win a championship? If not, is it one of those things where we just want to make sure that this guy is in tip-top shape to where he can do whatever he can? is like the same as when you know Ben Simmons got injured that rookie year and they just like look we just going to shut it down because there’s no need in him to come back. We’re not winning anything. We’re tanking so to speak. So to me it’s one of those things just make sure that this guy does not have a setback. I’m going to give you a prime example of a guy who had a setback last year. He’s no longer with the 76ers, but Matis Styel had an injury last year and he was trying to bust his tail to get back and come to find out he came back too soon. And what happens is what that does it leads to not just injuries um from that like you know from like when in other words what you do is you overcompensate. So when you overcompensate you may injure the other leg you know stuff like that because you’re putting too much pressure. So to me, the 76ers just have to be extremely careful with Jared McCain because all the things you just said, you know, they looked at him and, you know, he was supposed to be a guy in the G-League. They looked at him and he’s like, “Hey, yo, this was the steal of the draft. This guy could have been the MVP. He would have been the MVP.” So, you know, you just got to rookie I mean, excuse me. Yeah. The rookie of the year, not the MVP, the rookie of the year. So, you’d have to be 100% careful with with with him. Yeah. Yeah, let’s do a hot take show. Let’s do a hot take show. The MVP. What about the MVP? That’s He made the Hall of Fame after 23 games. Exact SGA guy. Shall that guy suck. He stole it. Foul seeking. Come on. Yeah, that guy. Yeah. What What if you were to put a ceiling on it with Jiren McCain, what what do you think it would be? It comes back healthy as you’re saying at 100% to the point where he feels 100% healthy. He trusts the knee because that’s something not enough people talk about. It’s not just about physically getting over the injury. It’s mentally getting over the injury that you could trust the knee again. You could trust that you’re not going to, you know, do anything do any more harm or anything like that. So, what what do you think the ceiling would be for Jared McCain? An off thebench guy, starter similar to what we saw last year. Because I’ll tell you this just right out of the gate before you answer. If he’s even at what he was last year, I’m happy to see that given the injury and then I’d count on the big step forward next year. Yeah. You know what I I think it depend it also depends on who you have on the roster, right? Like you know it does that. Um, if if Quinn Grimes is back, I look at him as a as coming off the bench, you know, giving me giving me production and scoring points off the bench. Um, I just look at it as a standpoint and that’s not a knock against him. It’s just that I want a bigger guard to go alongside Tyrese Maxi. So, yeah, I I just see that. But to me, it’s one of those things where like if we’re going to be right, like maybe, you know, depending on depending on where he is at at the start of training camp, I don’t know if I want to just rush him out there. Like I want to gradually bring him in and then maybe that last pre-season game, see where he is, right, to give him more minutes and then you can base it off of that moving forward with the regular season. But yeah, like I really want to see him coming off the bench and and probably, you know, that’s the ceiling for me is that Lou Williams role where he comes off the bench and just gives you buckets, right? Does a lot of other things. So that that’s where he is now. Again, if Quinton Grimes isn’t on the roster, then maybe you re-evaluate things, right? You know, you re-evaluate, you know, what you have. But but yeah, to me it’s the ceiling is blue will at this particular time, at least for this season. I love it. I would absolutely love to see that. And and yeah, as far as the Sixers go, kid gloves, slow to return, slow build, take all the time you need. I don’t have high expectations for this season. Anyway, I do have some high expectations for what Jared McCain could be in the coming years for the 76ers. When we come back, the hell nah heard around the world and actually has to do with a conversation, Keith, that you and I had just a couple of weeks ago about whether or not you’re from Philly, how you could say, when you could say you’re from Philly, you’re now from Philly. One person that we all know answered that in the um in the negative with great emphasis that many didn’t appreciate that appreciate it. All that and more when we return. This is Locked on 76ers on the Locked on Sixers YouTube channel. Back after this. Oh man, not only is basketball going to be here before you know it, but football is upon us Thursday night. So, this gentleman, this young gentleman’s name is uh I show speed, okay? Or speed, as the people that know him, I don’t feel like I know him well enough to just call him speed, Keith, to be honest with you. But, he’s been making his rounds around Philadelphia, including going up to Howie Roseman at at a practice and just saying, “Hey, uh, what’s your job? Like, what do you do here?” All right. Uh, he also challenged Saquon Barkley to a foot race of a 100red yards. Saquon said, “Uh, give me 40 or 50.” But also, he met up with Paul George. Now, this is where it came. All right. Now, you saw this. Uh, he gets into a car with Paul George and he says to Paul George, now we can’t play it for you because we don’t own the the video of it, so we can’t play it. And he says to Paul George, “Hey, are you from Philly?” And Paul George answers with an emphatic, “Hell no.” And he’s like, “I thought you were from Philly.” He goes, “No, I play for Philly.” And then he goes on to say like he likes Philly. Like he gets there’s good there’s some good people around here. But the way he answered so emphatically in the negative has rubbed people the wrong way, Keith. Yeah, it has. It really has. I mean, you know, the thing about it is you look at it, you know how sometimes when somebody asks you that question and you say the first thing that sometimes when you answer like that, you’re saying, “Okay, that’s how you really feel.” Yeah. But then when you come back and you say, “Oh, but they got some.” It’s kind of like, “Dad, you quit yourself a little bit.” Now, now here’s the thing. It’s two ways to look at it, right? Yeah. So, Paul George’s first season in Philadelphia didn’t go as planned. And we know that the fans in Philadelphia have been extremely hard on him, right? So I don’t you know I haven’t spoken to him you know I haven’t you know but but it could be one of those things where you know it’s been tough for him here like with the way the fans have been negative like dude you’re making all this money you haven’t played like who is Paul George we’re getting hosed or he’s washed or he’s this and that. So it could have been one of those things where it’s like, nah, heck no, I’m not from here. You, you know, these people this and that, right? So initially when you hear that, you’re like, yo, he dissed the city. But then you look at it and you say to yourself like maybe he kind of feels some sort of way because of the reception that he’s received since he’s been here, right? And it was kind of maybe like a defense neck. I’m not from here. No, no. like you’re you know so I’mma give him a little bit of a pass. Now I know that other people are critical of him and this and that. Um but I’m gonna give him a pass just because of the way that he’s been dissed in the way that people are. So yeah, I’m gonna I’m I Yeah, pass maybe. But uh it was kind of rough Yeah. Chanty Garner Johnson. I think I think the word was I literally think he dropped the MF um about Philadelphia when he went to Detroit and then he came back and won a Super Bowl. So, we’re cool. You know, Paul George and the 76ers have far too many problems that I care far too much about for me to really care about. Like, do I like his answer? Like, hell not. Like, what are you crazy? I’m not a part of this. Like, the way he answered it, that’s what that’s the vibe it gives you. But I don’t in all honesty I’m like okay yeah. Do I like it? No. Is it something that I’m gonna lose sleep over or even get my you know my eyeire up? Absolutely not. He’s from California. It could it honestly could also just mean that he would have responded like that about any city that he thought he was from that that Speed thought he was from. Uh Mr. Speed I don’t know uh thought he was from and he’s just saying no man I’m from California. Like why would anyone think I’m from anywhere but California? Like there you go. So, it’s it’s honestly it’s not a blip on my radar. When the season starts and he’s not playing, I’m not going to be like, “And he won’t even let people think he’s from here.” Like, I’m it ain’t there. The Sixers, and this is honestly what I think about with everything that surrounds the Sixers, including the Joel Embiid article with little things in there about his relationship with the team and not answering text messages and and not being the greatest leader, whatever. I I it all for me it’s yes it’s things we’ll talk about it’s things we discuss because it’s out there for the fans to consume and ultimately that’s what is the determining factor of whether or not we talk about it but in all honesty no one is going to give a damn about Paul George saying hell no or Joel Embiid saying I’m going to take this at my pace if they come out and they ball out next season if they come out and they show you that hey this contract wasn’t a mistake that contract extension wasn’t a mistake If they come out and they play their asses off and everyone feels like they’re playing their asses off and they’re giving results to where hey in this quote wide openen east that everybody talks about that I wouldn’t considered wide open but people say it. Oh damn the Sixers this might be their opportunity. They might actually capitalize on that opportunity. So yeah, do I like hearing Paul George go hell no when asked if he’s from Philly? No. It’s not one of my favorite things to hear. But all in all, it’s like, “Yeah, dude, just just play well.” Like my my second reaction to it was, “Dude, just play play at the level you played at when you played in what was it? 76 games for the Clippers two years ago when you shot 46%. Just show me that guy. Show me that guy.” And that’s the guy that no matter what is going to be embraced because not only is it a guy that’ll be having success again in this world where he’s playing really well at that level he was playing at two years ago, but it’s also something we love in the city of Philadelphia. It’s a guy playing through an injury, working hard to get through it, having a down year, and bouncing back. That’s what it’s about. It’s about getting hit and keep moving forward, as we like to say. Well, here’s the one thing that people in Philadelphia, we don’t really want to hear, right? Playing in Philadelphia is tough. Yes. For outsiders. And the reason why it’s tough is because we are demanding of our superstars probably more so than anyone most places because it’s a bluecollar town. We expect you to battle and fight through stuff, right? And that’s why a lot of times, you know, we don’t get the free agents that we think that we should. Now again, people want to come and play for the Eagles now because the Eagles are the champions. They are number one. But the thing we got to realize is that, you know, a lot of players, especially Paul George is from California. It’s it’s California is a completely different mentality. A lot of these guys are laidback. They’re chill. They’re this and that. Really, you know, when I talk to people from other places, they like, “Yo, dude, you’re blunt. like you’re you’re just blunt. We don’t. And I’m like, “Well, that’s how you’re supposed to be.” And they’re like, “No, but we don’t like that.” So, whereas, you know, it it’s just one of those things. And I had other I had players tell me this. I had people affiliated with the 76ers and worked for the Sixers told me in the past that it’s tough for them to get a lot of free agents here just because of how rabbid the fan base is and how it’s kind of like it’s just it’s in your face like we love you or we hate you. It’s one of those things and the love is basically on what have you done for us lately? So when he says that, a lot of people don’t want to hear that, but when he said that, you know, I remember what I’m, you know what I think about? I think about when he’s driving his car through the Eagles celebration. You remember when they when they went to the Super Bowl and they and they were celebrating on Broad Street and you see him and then he’s like they got a picture of him, a video of him like waving the fans, but then you later hear they like, “Yo, what you going to do for the city? you need to win a championship deal and stuff like that. Like, yo, we could be up in your face a little bit. So, it is what it is. And like you said, at the end of the day, it doesn’t matter what he says right now. He’s going to be ultimately judged by if he wins a championship or not or if he plays well or not. And if so, if he plays well this year, if he plays well towards the in the end of his career, he’ll say, “You know what? No, I’m not from Philly, but I love Philly.” You know what I mean? Now, if if he struggles and continues to do what he does, he like, “Yo, that was the roughest place that I played. The roughest place that I played.” It’s just how was I’ve heard it from so many people that have played professionally and had either a career in Philly or a stop in Philly and they all say the same thing. Uh it’s it’s either original an original thought to them where they didn’t hear it said, they say it or they’ve heard it for somebody from somebody else. Philly ain’t for everybody. Philly ain’t for that those exact words. I’m sure you’ve heard it too. Those exact words I have heard many many times over. And I got to say, I know some fan bases might not take pride in that. Like they might even do some self-reflection, but no, this is this is the city. This is the city of Philadelphia. We hold you accountable. I I say this all the time and it just got brought up a lot with the Eagles as far as unfurling the banner for the Super Bowl. Like this team got booed off the field after they won their first Super Bowl at halftime of the following season because they were playing like ass against the Falcons. This team got booed off the field after winning the Super Yeah, they came back and they won. But they or they got it together and they won. The Phillies after breaking a 27-year drought. I want to make sure I have this right because I always bring this up, but I’m never sure of the question or of when it actually happened. And I think it was Yeah, I think it was twothirds of an inning. Yeah. The Phillies won the World Series in 2008. In 2009, Brett Meyers was pitching the opening game after the first championship the city won in 27 years. And two outs into that start, he gave up a two-run home run and he got booed. Like we are, what are you doing for me now? what are you doing for me tomorrow type of city. And Malcolm Jenkins, former Eagle safety, I think had the perfect response to all this, which was when they got booed off the field at halftime in 2018 after winning the Super Bowl, he said, “Yeah, I would have booed us, too. We like we we needed that kick in the ass.” Like we needed that. Like that’s the way we are in Philadelphia is the strict father type of parent as opposed to like the nurturing mother type of parent. You know what I mean? Like that’s the type of city this is. And Paul George has certainly gotten the has certainly gotten his fair share of that. Joel Embiid has gotten the fair share of that. Um Jared McCain, I think we’re waiting to see what he really develops into obviously before we really judge. But we love what we saw so far. But I love this about the city of Philadelphia because do you want to be a fan base that’s just like, “Oh, it’s okay. Here’s a juice box and an orange peel. Get them tomorrow.” Like no. That’s if I was like abducted by by aliens and dropped back into city Philadelphia and that was the take on it. I would be like this is a wait I thought I want to go back to the alien plan. I think I’m more familiar with that than the city of Philadelphia trying to nurture somebody along. Yeah, I agree. I agree with you. I mean I I agree. I can’t argue with that. Um I just can’t. Um, you raised a great point, but it it is one of those things where we just got to understand and like, you know, maybe could he have handled it better perhaps? So, you know, he could have like, you know, toned it down a little bit and like, “No, I’m not from here. I just play here.” Right. But to me, it just seemed like um a dumb question like like you I thought you just lived here. Nah, man. Like, and you walk up to the general manager and say, “Hey, what do you do here?” Like, it just seemed like, you know, you you’re doing a skit. And I think PG um fell for it. You know what I mean? Like, and and now it went viral. And that’s something that, you know, as my man Ra Rashish or dude, I just butchered your name. I’m going just say RR, my man. I’m sorry about that. But he said, you know, he isn’t a kid. He should Yeah, Reesh. Yeah, Rakesh. My bad, bro. He said he should have known how to handle a trap question like that. And And it’s true. He should have known how to handle a trap question, you know? So sometimes real goes wrong. Go and you know what I would have loved? What? I agree. You know, you know what I would have loved? I I would have loved an actually. I would that’s what I would an actually. An actually is a very diffusing word where it’s like um Oh, actually I’m from I’m from California, you know. Yeah, like I can understand why that might be surprising to learn this, but actually I’m from California. Like that kind of thing. That’s I could have gone for an actually about then. Uh all right, Keith, it’s it’s that time and I think we have the perfect response right as you look for reading material. Here we go. All right, we’ll be back right after this quick blink of a break. Oo, Under the Sun. Under the sun. I got this book signed. So, it’s by Harold Jackson. He uh he he used to be a editorial writer. Get this. He used to cover Alabama, the University of Alabama. Oh, wow. Now, yeah. Back in the day, he was and he’s from Birmingham, Alabama. Great dude. He uh he used to be the editorial um guy for the Inquire. Um and then he he retired at the Houston Chronicle. He did that there as well. But he wrote a book and it is talks about his his journey and you know he you know he interviewed Obama he did a lot of stuff but uh he used to tell me stories about Bear Bryant and everything like that and it’s funny he was like one of the first he was the first black writer reporter to cover Alabama which is crazy. Yeah. And he’s Yeah. He’s only 70 when you think of that. It’s like that right. But um yeah, I you know getting to Quinton Grimes again nothing. Hell no. But but he’ll Yeah. I mean, but I do believe at the end of the day, we’re going to be saying hell yeah. Nothing’s changed. It’s just again, it’s just we’re just waiting and seeing, man. There’s no rush. there’s no rush until the 11th hour, you know, and when the 11th hour comes, you know, we got a couple more weeks um to see what’s going on. Now, the problem, the thing is, see what happens is when you start getting to training camp and you and the team goes over to u the Middle East, Abu Dhabi, and he’s not there, and Nick Nurse has to answer that question. Daryl my has to answer these questions. That’s when it gets a little crazy. You know, it’s it’s kind of sort of like what the Dallas Cowboys went through with Micah Parsons, right? You know, it’s like he’s sitting on the sideline. He’s not practicing. But as soon as when they start preparing for the Eagles that week, okay, we got to get it done. Either he’s going to go or either he’s going to play or we’re going to trade. And they ended up trading him to the Green Bay. Copy that. Copy that. Uh, I hope uh it gets done in the near future, but I am not optimistic that it will. Unless the near future is like a month, but by then there’ll be playing games in Abu Dhabi. How about that? Yeah, that’s the crazy part, right? That’s the crazy part, you know. His name is Keith Pompe, ladies and gentlemen. My name is Mark Farzetta. We’ll be back with you guys tomorrow for another edition of Locked On 76ers. Maybe an Eagles tie in or two being that it’s the Eagles kickoff against the Dallas Cowboys. How about that? Thanks for watching. Thanks for listening. Make sure you guys like and subscribe to Locked on 76ers. Keith and I got you covered each and every day for your Locked Oners content. I’ll have you covered for your Locked On 76ers posts this season as well. So, a lot of 76ers talk coming up in the coming months. Thanks for watching. Thanks for listening. Back with you guys tomorrow. See you then. Bye-bye.

At times you guys can be too negative. As a fan I need more from you. I never considered McCain as a G league candidate during his rookie year. What are you talking about ? He needs to improve on his defense AND he is your starter —–Grimes may not committed to this team(spooler alert ) he about getting that bag and should be on the bench if he is not on a long term contract
Moses Malone took us to the promis land and nobody care where he was from Mbiid and George need to play life 50 million a year players and stop the excuses get on the court and be in basketball shape I mean what the duck
If you ask guy from nyc is from phila he would say the same thing. Leave him alone .
McCain just needs to be available for about 10 minutes on September 22.
They will not rush him.
McCain is going to be tutored to be a pure PG.
He's too short and can't jump, but has a very high BBIQ.
Don't need him at SG.
maxey will hold this guy back. He's ready to run a team now!!! He has all the makings of a true lead guard. He sets the table, can pass, shoots well, and not a ball hog
McCain 6th man
