And the first takeaway from that game was Kaden Dana started and he entered this start with some new mechanics. He’s hiding the ball really well. His hand kind of starts at the waist and then Dana brings them back towards his shoulder and then when he comes forward at the very last second, he shows that hand right before he releases the ball. So teams are not able to see what he’s throwing. And that was the issue when he was up before and even in the minor leagues. He was showing the ball really early. Now his mechanics help him to hide that ball. And what it also does is it allows him to have a bit more miles on his fast ball. John, we saw that last night, averaging 95 on the fast ball. 96 he hit in the game. Had 15 to 18 inches of vertical break on the fast ball. John, he was really good last night. Five innings, two hits. Both of his hits came to Massie and then he had two runs. Just one run was earned and he walked two and he struck out four. Yeah, the arm slot was a huge issue. Remember that, Mike? And that goes back to even last year where, you know, if it was a fast ball, it was or I should say actually if it was a curveball, it was really high up, he was putting his arm up there, the release point was really high. Then if it was like a slider or a fast ball, the arm slot was a little bit lower. So the hitters were able to identify that arm slot and realize what pitch was coming. And so he’s fixed that. That’s been cleaned up. That’s something that we were hoping would get cleaned up and he looked like a much different pitcher out there. Now, the first two runs came in the third inning. The first run was charged Sedana that came on a sacrifice bunt. Kyle Isbel bunted the runners at first and second over and the ball was fielded by PZA who was playing first. He turned around to throw it to Reanifo who was covering first and hit Isbel on the helmet and went into right field. Yeah, the Royals got their second run on a sack fly from Mike Estreky. Dana did get Bobby Whit Jr. to ground back to the mound and Pascantino to fly out to get out of that jam. Uh, listen to this. Kaden Dana is at 23 days on the active roster. That means they’d have to send him down on September 25th to keep him rookie eligible for 2026. I think I think you’re going to need to do that, right? I don’t think they will do that. I don’t think they’re thinking about that. I think they’re just going to let him pitch and if that far ahead, right? I think if he’s pitching well, they’re not going to make that move. But it would be a smart move because you want rookie Kaden Dana to be a guy that is starting 2026 and perhaps even in the rotation. Isn’t it great, John, that two young pitchers have looked really good in back-to-back games, five innings, and Dana would have gotten the victory in this game, but there, you know, Robert Stevenson gave up the the game-tying run. Obviously, the Angels ended up getting the victory, but he would have had a win. And then Mitch Ferris got a win the night before to have two young guys like this come up, pitch five innings, look solid, get a win or an almost win. I think that that’s a good sign, right? I did like the fact that both of those guys, they did their five innings. It was like, you know, they’ve pitched well up to that point. Don’t let it get out of hand. Don’t let it get out of control. So, I know it’s like I I don’t want to say it’s like bubble wrap, but it’s just a good decision to say, “Hey, you had a great start and you qualify for the win here, right?” And and so I think that’s important for the confidence of a young guy. Man, Dana certainly looked ruined after he, you know, pitched out of the bullpen this season, right, Mike? He he they ruined him in the right direction because he looked like a different pitcher up there. How about that? That’s great. Well, and I think that that’s something we should we should also high five is that something’s happening in the minor leagues that is a benefit to these young pitchers and some of these young hitters. Perhaps it’s great that Christian Moore is down there kind of working some things out and Jackahanitz is down there working some things out and look what Kaden Dana was able to do just changing a bit of the mechanics and and suddenly I know it’s one start let’s not get carried away but suddenly he looks like a really strong pitcher the guy that came up last year and had a really great start and then kind of fell apart. This seems like a different guy. Everything seems a bit more within himself and you mentioned the release point. The fact that he can hit the same release point no matter what he’s throwing is key to deceiving the hitters. Yeah. Cleaning up those mechanics that were exposing his pitches. Yeah. Over the last year and a half was certainly something that needed to happen and I’m glad they were able to do that. So, you’re right. Yes. He got a win in his first start against the Mariners last year, the Mariners. And then he got a win in this first start. And I think the key difference here was just the fact that we were watching what he was doing on the mound, the release point and and hiding the ball and all of that stuff. That’s the key difference here. It’s not a dumb luck win or anything like that. It’s not, oh, it’s the Royals. It’s not that. It’s what he needed to fix was fixed. And I think that that is significant. Second takeaway, the Angels offense was quiet until the sixth inning. They had one w one hit and two walks through the first five innings. But in the sixth, they got a walk and two hits. The second hit of the inning came off the bat of Joe Adele. His 33rd home run of the season. A three-run shot to deep center field. Mike 418 ft. Second straight night that Adele has hit a home run in the sixth inning. That was a go-ahad home run and gave the Angels the lead. So that was fantastic to see. Yeah. And then Joe wasn’t done, John. Third takeaway as he gave the Angels their second and final lead after Mata hit a double. Uh Taylor Ward hit a fly to right. Mata tagged up, went to third. John, two nights in a row, this team has done the things that we’ve been asking for them to do all season long. Productive outs and moving runners along and making contact. And that’s what they’ve been doing. And we saw that the night before. We saw that last night, especially uh when they moved Monado over to third base. And then Joe Adell hits a soft grounder to short. Bobby Whit Jr. goes to ground it and the ball kind of bounces up, hits his glove. Adele probably would have been safe anyway. He was hustling down the line unlike Louis Ranifo. And I gotta make a comment about him later on, so remind me of that. But he was safe and Mata scored. John, that’s 90 RBI’s for Joe Adele on the season. Now, can I read you this tweet that I put out? Uh Joe Adell’s first three RBI’s tonight, obviously off the home run. 105.3 miles per hour off the bat, a 25 degree launch angle, 418 feet. His game-winning RBI, 84 miles an hour off the bat, -43 launch angle, 3 feet. And that’s the one that won the game cuz Whit Jr. couldn’t come up with it. I thought that was pretty funny. Uh, fourth takeaway, Mike Reed Demer’s got his third save on a night where Kenley Jansen was off. Reed looked fantastic in that ninth inning. out the rules one, two, three, and ended the game with back-to-back strikeouts. And shout out to our guy Andrew Chaffen for that 12 pitch battle. Yeah. With Vinnie Pascantino. And and man, I the old um Angels probably would have let Pascantino hit a home run right there. But Chaffen, man, was battling. And even Gooby was like, “Throw that slider down and away.” Because Pascantino is in swing mode. And that’s the one that got him. It was a slider down away in the dirt and Oh was able to put the tag on him and that’s what kept this one at four to three. So that was great to see. What were you going to say about uh Renhifo? Yeah, it’s not a takeaway, it’s just an irritant and and one of the things that I’ve noticed from Ran Heo is that he the Angels are the perfect team for him to play for, John, because he is so casual and the Angels are never involved in anything of intensity like a playoff run, right? and he has just been lately even more casual. He has just not been engaged. Like for example, when he hit a little bloop to Bobby Wit Jr. with a runner at first base, Bobby Wit was going to drop that ball and turn a double play because Renifa was standing at home plate with his bat on his shoulder watching it happen instead of running to first. So Bobby smiled because he thought, I could drop this thing and get out out at second and get it out at first because Ranifa wasn’t hustling then. And he and he would too. Bobby Whit Jr. would do that. Yeah. Then Salvi Perez hits the double down the line, right? And he slides into second base and Renifo decides to tag the the the part of the body that is like furthest from the bag instead of the body body part that’s actually near the bag, right? Like he just And then he called for the review, which was he calls for the review was like, “What are you doing, homie?” Like, and then he just seems so checked out. He just seems like he’s not hustling. He seems like he’s just he’s so dismissive. Very different than like Pza. And I know that PZA doesn’t seem to have the same bat that that Renhifo has. Seems to be able I I think you’re right. I PZA seems to be able to play a couple of multiple positions as well. But what I’ve noticed between PZA and Reanhifo is that PZA is engaged. He’s engaged in this game. He’s engaged in the rest of the season. Renhifo is like, “Yeah, man. No big deal.” Right? I’ I’d argue that casual I’d argue that the old Renifo was engaged, right? Like trying to make his way onto the team and but you know he’s got this casual mindset that you’re referring to. But look, that’s a symptom of where this team has been the last his whole career really. He’s he’s only played for them in the majors and so uh you know can’t blame that guy. But at the same time, it is frustrating because, you know, you wanted him to be part of what this team does well and they didn’t get enough of the doing well to be somewhere this season, especially after the last two years he’s had. I know they were injury shortened, but he had great years that that season he stole a ton of bags, hit a ton of home runs, cut short. Then last year he’s stealing bags, he’s hitting over 300. That got cut short. Then he comes out of the gate when it really mattered and you just didn’t get a lot out of Renifo to uh to start this season. I say Pza’s bat’s going to come around because that first season he was up. He had a good bat and and I stand by the fact that I think the Yankees just moved too fast. Not that they didn’t give PZA time like they’ve given him three years to be up with a big club, but what I’m saying is the time that they need to invest in a guy like PZA to get him good. They don’t have time to wait for guys to get good. Yeah, they need guys to be good right now and that’s why they trade for the guys that they trade. Thanks for making Lockdown Angels your first listen of the day. Mike Jack Kohano, you mentioned, is currently down in AAA. It sounds like he’s staying there to really work on some things. Uh Ray Montgomery said he’s down. He’s taking a few hits up here. We know that. He knows that. The good thing about him is he knows the reality of where he’s at and why he’s taking it headon. He’s not running from it. So, that’s good. Uh the last time Jack went out was against the Rangers. And when he finished that start, he said, “It’s tough. It’s not a fun time out there, but I do feel good. I’m young. I’ll figure it out.” So, what went wrong for Jack Ohanoitz, Mike? Well, to simply put, he’s just throwing way too many balls in the middle of the plate. And in fact, he said that. He said, “I think I’m just not confident in myself enough to go out there and and rise up to the moment. You’ve really got to trust your stuff to have success.” And he said, “I’ve got a ton of times last year where I was really trusting my stuff and pitching really well, and I just need to go back to that.” Now, the Angels are having him work on some stuff in the minor leagues. One of the things that Conit said that they’re having him work on is that he’s just not where he needs to be with his mechanics. It’s just not really one issue, but he’s working on the mechanical side of things like Kane and Dana did. And he said, “I feel like if I work with my mechanics, I start there, it’ll help with every single pitch.” Obviously, according to Jack Oowitz, he said, “I’m not where I need to be, but all I can do is work on it.” John Jackahanowitz has a windup that you’ve mentioned on this show is difficult to repeat. It’s fast. It’s quick. Right. And there’s a little jerky. Yeah. There’s been a lot of conversation about I wonder if they gave him a full windup if that would help him to find his release point and his mechanics. If I’m working with him, I’m considering that if I’m if I’m working on the mound with him and doing a bullpin session with him, I’m going to have him give a little bit more before he’s throwing his pitch. Because what we found from Kate and Dana was if he just adjusted his mechanics a bit, he was able to hide the ball, which was key, but then he was also able to hit his release point every single time. And that’s been kind of the issue with Jack Kahanowitz is that release point and being consistent in his mechanics. But you looked into something via Statcast and as you texted me earlier yesterday, you said it’s right in front of our faces. We see exactly what it is. John, what did you find that you would, if you were the pitching coach, you would say, “Okay, we’re working on this.” Yeah, that was a reference to yesterday’s show when we would talk about the first thing we would do if we were in charge and I said, you know, the answers are out there. All the answers to the angel’s problems are out there. You just have to be able to communicate it to the right people. So, here’s me communicating it to our everydayers and maybe somebody can get this passed up to the front office, but no, this is neither here nor there. So, I took a look at the differences between this year and last year, Mike. And when I drilled in, obviously the walk rate is way up. Yeah. This year it was minuscule. It was like 3.6 or something percent walk rate last year. And and so I think the walk rate is up by virtue of the fact that he’s getting hit really hard in the zone. So maybe he’s hesitant to attack the zone and throw strikes like he has before. That that to me screams, okay, that’s a symptom of him trying not to get hit hard and pitch along the edges, but then he’s, you know, you how many sinkers do you see away from the lefty outside the zone, you know, then it’s ball three, no strikes, right? We’ve seen that a lot from from Jackowitz. So, obviously, that’s a that’s a glaring issue, the walks. But I think I found a different problem that sort of affects how all of his pitches play off of each other. Okay. And it comes down to the slider and the sweeper. We know sliders and sweepers are supposed to break horizontally, right, right to left, left to right, depending on the throwing hand of the of the guy, and they run toward the glove side. So, in Jack’s case, uh it’s uh in on the lefty hitter and away from the righty hitter. He’s actually throwing the sweeper one m hour slower than last year and it’s actually made it better this year from almost 84 miles an hour last year to 82 and a half miles an hour this year. Mike, it’s got a higher whiff rate, so swing and miss. It’s got a higher strikeout rate. It’s got a lower expected batting average, expected slugging, and expected wobba. Like last year, his sweeper had like an expected slugging of like 900. It was absolutely insane. So, uh, by virtue of slowing that pitch down, it’s added more vertical drop, but it’s also a little bit tighter with less horizontal movement. So, 14.2 in of horizontal movement last year down to 13.3 in. The reason I’m throwing all these numbers at you is because this is where I think the issue is, and it lies in the slider. He’s throwing it way harder la uh this year. 87 mph this year compared to 85. It’s a resulted in a huge drop in horizontal movement. Right. Again, from right to left out of Jack Kohanowitz’s hand, it was 7.2 in of horizontal break. Last year, this year, 3.3 in on average. Wow. More than half of the movement in his slider this year has gone away. And the spin rate has also dropped from 30% to 18%. Mike, do you remember a couple of years ago when Reed Demmer was throwing his slider really hard and it ended up playing more like a cut fast ball rather than a slider? Yeah. It’s it’s a shorter movement. It’s a harder pitch. So, in my opinion, here’s what I think happened. Jack’s effort to like differentiate the slider from the sweeper more. I I think that it ended up causing Jack Kahanowitz to throw the slider a bit harder this year. Now the slider’s at 87, the sweeper’s at 82, but the result is that the slider barely moves compared to how much it moved last year. And the differences in speeds are actually easier to be picked up on by the hitter. 87 versus 82, right? And here’s what I think should happen. he needs to go back to throwing that slider a little less harder because when it comes out of the hand at a similar speed as the sweeper, you don’t know if it’s the slider breaking 7 in or the sweeper breaking 13 in. It’s a difference of 82 mph versus 85 mph. That might not seem like a lot, but that’s certainly closer than 87 and 82, right? So depending on which pitch is coming out, the slider at 7 in of break or the sweeper at 13 in of break. Here’s what I think that means. I think a hitter could be thinking sweeper and then it’s going to end up out of the zone, right? It’s going to start in the zone and go 13 in and end up out of the zone. and instead if Jack throws that slider, it lands on the edge of the zone for strike three because it didn’t move as much as the pitch that the hitter was expecting. On the other hand, the hitter could be sitting slider expecting a shorter 7-in horizontal movement. So, they go chasing it, but it ends up being the sweeper out of the zone and they go chasing it out of the zone because it’s coming in at nearly the same speed. So again, I think in an effort to differentiate the two pitches on miles per hour, I think that’s actually made it worse. I think that he needs to get back to throwing that slider a little less harder so that there’s more movement on it cuz again 3.3 in of horizontal break. That’s nothing, right? That that’s not going to fool anybody. And that’s not a slider. Yeah. Not a slider. It’s a cut fast ball, right? Especially at 87, it’s a low speed cut fast ball. Yeah. And so, in my opinion, yes, there’s lots of things for him to work on, mechanics, uh, the the walk rate, all that stuff. But I wanted to drill down a little bit deeper. And again, I think the slider and the sweeper, if he fixes those things, it’s going to make the rest of his pitches play up and be more effective. And honestly, that slider and sweeper combination could give him the out pitch that he needs, the strikeout pitch that he needs, the putaway pitch. Yeah, that look a little bit more similar and coming towards the batters at similar speeds, but at the last minute they break way differently than what the hitter is expecting. Mike Christian Moore was also sent down to AAA and he struggled this season at the major league level. He’s sitting 195 and has a 623 on base plus slugging OPS. very different than what he’s used to in the minor leagues and in college. Ray Montgomery said that one of the things Moore was dealing with was actually his confidence. And Ray Montgomery had to say he’s used to getting two hits in every game that he plays. And that’s not going to happen here. You’re so closely removed from the that your mind takes time to catch up to that. Travis Darno said that they didn’t expect Moore to come up and, you know, tear it up the way that he’s been tearing it up in the minor leagues. But they also kind of hope that he would because he’s got that swaggy energy. He’s got that competitive spirit that we’ve seen a lot from Neto. We think Christian Moore can be that same kind of guy. I think those two are like two P’s in a pod, right? And they’re on both sides of the of the uh the infield. But uh Taylor Ward said that every player needs to recognize what it will take for them to be who they will be. Ward took a few years to become who he is today. And he feels like time is Christian Moore’s best friend. He said, “Honestly, it probably comes down to coaches along the way helping us make those strides.” So that’s kind of what the players have had to say. That’s what Ray Montgomery had to say. Mike, are you confident in the coaching of whether it’s AAA, whether he goes back to DA, whether it’s the major leagues, are you confident in their ability to help Christian Moore get better at the major league level? Yeah, I am. I think that they’re going to be able to give him some time and and give him some effort. I I think Johnny Washington’s approach is a uh a power approach, which is why there’s a lot of strikeouts in that approach. And quite honestly, I don’t know if Christian Moore is a power hitter. I think Christian Moore is more of a use the whole field type of hitter. Uh Allah Joe Adele. And look what Joe Adele is doing now that he’s thinking use the whole field. We had a whole conversation in the offseason about that. And that was something that was being preached to him and something that he was wanting to do. Use the whole field. And here we are. 33 home runs, 90 RBI’s, right? It’s a good thing I believed in him all the way through this whole process. But for Christian Moore, John, I think he’s somebody that needs to use the whole field. And him being in AAA right now, he has already had success there. And double A, he’s had success, right? He’s a guy that’s going to have success. I am not overly concerned, if I’m concerned at all, about Christian Moore for two reasons. One, I go back to Mike Trout. When they called Trout up, I was at his first game and sat behind home plate. Got to yell and scream and cheer his name. And he was terrible in that game because he was a he was a young guy trying to figure out life, right? And then what happened next season? He comes up, boom, rookie of the year. Boom. The GOAT MVP, right? Like he’s an incredible dude. Well, should have been MVP. Should have been MVP. Yeah. Um, in my mind, he’s MVP, but it just took him some time to get adjusted to it. John, I think that that’s the same story with Christian Moore. Now, does he put up the numbers that Trout puts up? That’s yet to be determined, right? But if he comes up next season in 26, I think he’s going to be somebody that the Angels can count on because he’s already proven himself to be clutch when necessary. He can come through when the Angels need him, and he’s got a lot of hype and energy. He’s just going through the growing pains of being a new major league hitter, a new major league player. And the other thing that I think is so needed and necessary that I don’t think that we consider too often is the consistency of playing every day and the consistency of every day at bats. We did a show just a few weeks ago where Ray Montgomery said, “Man, Christian’s going to be here until like 2030, so he’s going to have his time, right?” So, if that’s going to be your perspective, then you should not be thrown by the fact that he’s hitting 195 and has an OPS under 700, right? And that’s because you’re not giving him a bounce. You’re giving it to casual Louis Renhifo. You’re giving it to Yon Manata. Two players that aren’t going to be here next year, right? And so I get that why they send him back down is to work on his swing. It’s a little long. He had that thumb injury. They probably need to shorten that up. And so I hope that they can work on that. But what I really think he needs, John, is time and consistency because I think he’s going to be a really good player. Yeah. They they talk about the long swing like it’s been an issue since the thumb injury, but Mike, he’s always struggled against uh breaking stuff, right? And that’s the result of a long swing because you’re reaching out and trying to hit the breaking stuff and it’s just not working right. It’s and so uh I think that that’s always kind of been there for Christian Moore. But if if I were in charge here we go again doing this conversation like we did last year. But I I’m with you on what I what I would do for Moore is I would have started him every day, right? And I know that he was hurt and when he got hurt, he was playing every day. He was part of the reason why the team was having some success and they were close to a wild card spot back in July and then he of course got hurt and had to miss all that time. But the thing is is he was doing that clutch Christian Moore stuff that he likes to do that we saw in spring training as well, right? And so that was a lot of fun. And so, yeah, an injury for sure can affect his swing and an injury for sure can affect his mindset, but also give him the playing time because like you said, they were giving it to guys like Renifo and Mata who, you know, in all likelihood are not going to be here next year. They’re both free agents. At the same time, it was mixed messaging from the Angels of well, we got to have Mata and Renifo in there if we’re going to compete, right? but also we want to give Christian Moore some playing time, but also we want Christian Moore to help us compete, but also we’re gonna send him down to TripleA. Right? Like this. This is the problem with having mixed messaging about, hey, we’re obviously very competitive and we’re going to, you know, we want to win with this core of guys, but we’re just not going to play him every day. We’re going to send them down to Triple A, right? Like that’s the problem is, you know, don’t don’t let uh don’t what is it? Do as I say, not as I do. Is that the phrase? And that’s what it feels like with the Angels front office and their decision-m right now. And we don’t know how the, you know, uh, Ron Washington being out of, you know, the managerial seat affected, you know, how Christian Moore was viewed. Maybe Ray Montgomery didn’t quite view him the same way as Ron Washington. or maybe he didn’t view him as somebody who uh you know they needed to count on with all the playing time in the way that perhaps Ron Washington might have valued giving him more playing time. So all that to say I guess at this point it is what it is and you know we got a few weeks left of September. The season ends in September this year and and Christian Moore who winds up back on the team at the end of this season. Let him stay in TripleA if he’s not going to play every day. If he’s if he’s going to be benched once he comes back up, then don’t call him back up, right? Like I think he deserves to be on this major league club, you just got to let him work through it at the major league level. I understand going down to AAA and having a bit of a reset, maybe getting a little bit more direct coaching, but there’s no reason that couldn’t have happened at the major league level unless you were playing for something. And obviously this obviously competitive team isn’t playing for anything right now except to play spoiler for teams like the Royals like they’ve done. How did Jo Adell, Caden Dana, and the Los Angeles Angels’ bullpen lead the team to another win over the Kansas City Royals? On Today’s Locked On Angels, the Super Halo Bros. give you the takeaways from another victory in KC, where Jo Adell duplicated his heroics from Tuesday night with a big go-ahead home run in the 6th inning on Wednesday! Plus, what did we see Caden Dana that looked different than last time? And, Jon did a little digging into what might be a solution for Jack Kochanowicz on the mound! We’ve got that and much more on today’s show!

1. Adell- Take this team on your back and produce all the run support yourself. Can we say 100 RBIs? For a guy snubbed from the All Star Break HR derby what a redemption a 30/100 season be like. Moniak who???
2. Dana- Bravo Sir. Very good outing. Finish September strong so we could see you in the opening roster next season.
3. Kochanowicz- Let him stay there until the All Star break next season. Let him dominate as a top of the rotation starter. Add his finishing pitch and work on his location.
I think Detmers should talk to Jack, he can help him with that. Detmers throws 96-97 mph and his slider with tons of break at 88 mph
Don't know about anyone else but my coffee tasted better this morning with that win last night. Back to back wins with the future young guns starting the games and my man Adell hitting the deciding home run.
I think Moore is being affect by injury
Yesterday my boi Gavin was wearing a red Angels hat that made him look like Super Mario, lol hes been baptised Super Gavin Brotha, lol. The post cast Super halo bro😂
Do we think Rengifo not getting a new deal is what driving this "disinterest"?
Quietly gained 2 games in wild card race. Let's sneak into the playoffs.
Bryce cracks me out in center field , he’s too fast for his own good sometimes. Jo’s irritated look also cracked me up
Caden Dana had a nice Smooth delivery and didn't seem to panic…O'HOPPE called good pitches and Dana kept the ball low.
There is no Dana, only Zuul.
All we need is another 5-6 in a row an we’re right back in it!.. it can happen..
I'm just glad the GMPM seems to recognize that the season is over and is giving the young guys a chance to gain experience.
