DK’s Daily Shot of Pirates: Better ball
[Music] [Applause] Winning is winning is winning and your favorite ball club has been doing plenty of that for the past couple of weeks. Good morning to you. Good Thursday morning. I’m Dan Kavajic of DK Pittsburgh Sports. This is Daily Shot of Pirates. It comes your way bright and early every weekday if you’re into football andor hockey. I also offered daily shots of Steelers and Penguins in the same place that you found this Pirates 3 Dodgers zero last night at PNC Park. Strange kind of game. Brian Reynolds and Andrew McCutchen hit early solo home runs and the Dodgers just kept putting people all over the base paths, but to their credit, Braxton Ashcraft, Mike Burroughs kept right on stranding everybody. Dodgers would have 11 base runners in all five hits, six walks. Not one of them would make it all the way around. And that left your Pirates with W’s in the first two games of this series against Major League Baseball’s billiondollar team, a chance to sweep tonight at PNC Park with Paul SK on the mound, 10 wins in the past 13 games, and a fair amount of good feel. This was Cut afterward. you know, good baseball. So, uh, boys has been grinding. So, yeah, it’s good to, uh, be able to be at home and get the get the two wins in the fashion. So, um, score some runs live yesterday and, uh, you know, shut out today, three runs on the board. So, it’s a overall good win for us. Winning, winning, winning. There’s nothing that solves all problems like winning does when it comes to professional sports. But the craziest part of this specific scenario is that the Pirates have done this winning and in fact in this game evened out their record under Don Kelly at 51 and 51. while the roster itself has been semi dismantled. Think about this for a second. What did the Pirates get for David Bednar? Right? What did they get for Bailey Falter? What did they get for Isaiah Kiner Falefa? What did they get for Brian Hayes? Just keep going. Just keep going. And what you have, or at least what you should have had is a worse team. You should have had a team that no matter what you thought of the various players who were sent out wasn’t going to leave Kelly more options but less more depth but less. And in focusing on Bednar alone, we’re talking about a guy who for 2 months was the major’s number one closer at which point poof, he was gone. So, full credit to all concerned, but I’m going to throw one name at you today that I’d place above all the rest, and that would be Kelly. Because Kelly has been stuck with, you want to talk about a situation, he instantly inherited a team that had already seen its season get shot. This, of course, being back in May. He had four and a half months to navigate of a season that was declared dead. Worse, he had himself and by the way still has himself the majors worst offense. They’ve hit a lot better of late, but they sure didn’t when he took over and for the longest longest time. And no single facet sucks the life out of a group of baseball players quite like being unable to hit. Kelly kept that going. Not the clubhouse, not any veterans in there. Kelly. And nobody has to wonder about that. All they have to do is walk around from stall to stall as I’ve done and ask the players themselves where it comes from. They’ll all point toward the manager’s office. They’ll all cite Kelly, his energy, his enthusiasm, his passion, his his realness, and they’ll tell you that he wouldn’t let them quit. They’ll tell you that he wouldn’t let them just go through the motions. Not me, them. Now, this doesn’t at all change my mind about Kelly. I’ve felt this way about him for a long, long time. When the Pirates promoted him, I felt even more strongly upon seeing how he handled the first few days on the job that he’d be the choice moving forward. And I’m talking about regardless of who’ll be in the front office. Now, the the very very very small handful of you who still support Ben Cherington as general manager might ask, “Well, you can’t do that. You you can’t just single out the manager. Where’s the love for the GM? He’s the one that built this. No. No. Again, that’s the strange part here. All the Cherington’s done since Kelly took over was to piece by piece by piece make the team worse, at least toward the 2025 season. In most cases, openly acknowledging as much. You don’t make a trade like the Bednar trade that has no pieces currently in Pittsburgh and say that the trades made you better or that the GM made the team better and that it would have had something to do with the 2025 season or this late little surge or the team being 51 and 51 under Kelly. All that gets highlighted here is that Kelly is a good manager and that Kelly is the right manager moving forward. If Kelly were to be working with a functioning GM, imagine the difference on top of what we’ve already witnessed when we come back. J1Q. [Music] Today’s J1Q is as predictable as it comes. Craig asks, “Don Kelly is 51 and 51 now. DK, please tell us that this will not exonerate Ben Cherington in Bob Nutting’s eyes.” I’m not in a position to do that, Craig. as I’ve stressed time and time and time again, as I’ve been asked time and time and time again to recite the information that I received back when Derek Shelton was fired about Cherington’s future, about Nutting’s feelings on Cherington. All of that is now 4 months old. I’ve not had any further conversation on that matter. None. What I was told then unmistakably made Cherington dead man walking. What I was told then made it beyond stunning that he was still employed. But what I was told then doesn’t mean anything compared to how the one individual who make this decision feels about it on any given day. He could roll over this morning out of bed and say, “You know what? this Cherington. He’s all right. As soon as he traded all those players for nothing, we all got better. I I don’t know. I don’t know. I can’t control it. Everybody, it feels like everybody’s always wanting predictions from reporters as opposed to just reporting. This is why I don’t do them. I report to you what I hear. I report to you the information that I have and I do that in the most timely manner available to me. So, if I don’t say anything about this conversation and then let’s say the end of this month comes along and Cherington gets fired and I tell you, “Well, guess what? Hey, 4 months ago I was told.” You’re going to go, “Oh, right. Shut up.” Seriously, the business is reporting. That means finding stuff out, sharing it with you as soon as it’s confirmed enough to do so responsibly. That’s it. That’s it. There’s nothing else to it. That’s what I did 4 months ago. As such, if Nutting chooses to keep this GM based on, I don’t know, feeling good about things in September of an absolutely abominable, outright embarrassing season from top to bottom in the organization with the notable exception of Connor Griffin’s rise and Paul Ski going for the Sai Young. I I then he can do that. it’s his team. He owns it. If he wants to do dumb, damaging things to the team, if he doesn’t care about winning, then yeah, he can keep the guy. So, no, I can’t tell you, Craig, respectfully, that this is going to exonerate this or that or whatever. I can’t I can’t do that. I couldn’t do that four months ago. I couldn’t do it two months ago. I can’t do it now. I won’t be able to do it at the end of the month. The Pirates happen to employ the worst general manager in all of professional sports. If they decide they’re okay with that, there’s nothing any of us can do about that. I appreciate the question. I appreciate everybody listening to Daily Shot of Pirates. We’ll have another one of these tomorrow. [Music]
It’s been better ball of late, for sure.

DK?! I really love and enjoy your enthusiasm and your podcast you tell it like it is?! I’ve watched your podcasts a lot this season and you get rather “negative when the negative is there?!” “And you get rather positive when the positive is there?!”
I really want you to understand and tell our viewers and our audience this: as much as Ben Charrington has failed to produce our club on the offensive side of the ball?! And maybe he should be run out of town on that?!
Gosh, man?! Has he not put together a very formidable pitching staff one that can dominate for years to come?!
Minus the salaries and when they will trade, the star pitch away most notably Paul Skenes?!
I tell you the day that that happens I’m going to be so upset and cry?!
I already lived through Barry Bonds signing for the San Francisco Giants for $23 million in 1993 and left us?!
That one still stings?!
I remember losing Garret Cole to the Houston Astros on the move that was all about money, saving money?!
We know how it works here in Pittsburgh?!
When someone is good and upcoming and commanding of big bucks, our damn owner, “ Tightwad” Bob Nutting just simply dumps players to get them off of his financial books?!
Oh how this sucks?!
Especially for a fan like myself who lives outside of Pennsylvania I live in Arizona a small mountain town called Payson?!
Look it up on the maps we only have maybe 18,000 residents?!
But you know what I subscribed MLB I pay $30 a month so that I can watch this team a team that has been my team for all of my life since I was first able to walk and crawl?!
Yes, that’s right?!
My mother grew up near Allentown in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania! She met my father who was from Tucson, Arizona in our army in 1962 at Fort Bragg?!
When I was born in 1970 in the early 70s anytime the Pirates were on my mom said to me, “ Marshall, the Pittsburgh Pirates are playing baseball come and watch?!”
My dear uncle Don said he was riding in a jeep as a US Marine in Hawaii listening to game seven of the 1960 World Series when Bill Mazeroski hit his home run?!
Even though I don’t live in Pennsylvania, and I wish I did?!
I was nine years old in 1979 when we won the World Series and I watched every playoff game from the NLCS through all seven games the World Series, and in fact, I watched so many games whenever they were shown on television of the later half of the ‘79 series where we barely beat the Montréal Expos?!
I remember 1985 and what it felt like m- as our 1979 World Series Pirates collapsing amongst the “Pittsburgh drug trials” and losing like 104 games ?!
I was 15 years old then and let me tell you that really sucked and we really had some great players on that team. They were no reason for it.?!
And I remember in 1986 a new general manager named Sid Thryft comes in and names unlikely known third base coach from the Chicago White Sox named Jim Leyland?!
I remember his press conference in November 1985 when he was named manager of our Pittsburgh Pirates ?!
He joked that he had to rent the suit he was wearing to be named manager of our ball club ?!
That is hilarious, but that’s probably also the truth ?!
And as I graduated high school in 1988?! May 26, 1988 when I graduated high school looking at the baseball standings, Pittsburgh was in first place over the New York Mets?!
I mean, it was a dream to me. It made me feel so great?!
And what he did from 1988 1989 there were a lot of injuries and we just kind of collapsed in 1989 but turned it around in 1990, 1991 and ‘92 – we came roaring back we lost three straight NLCS playoff series?! 1992 completely broke my heart?! as if 1991 wasn’t bad enough?! in 1991. I felt our Pittsburgh Pirates were the very best team and all of baseball and we should’ve won the World Series that year?!
Well, fast forwarding to 2025 ?!
We have Don Kelly ?!
He is a “ Jim Leyland “ throwback?!
The man is done credibly this season, taking over and in four months getting our club to play .500 baseball- and especially when you consider who they’ve played in these three months great teams?!
I will end this by just saying that I’m eternally optimistic of 2026. I think our pitching staff is second to none. If we can just feel the team that can score some runs. I think we will at least make a wild card and if we get in the playoffs with Paul Skenes, and the other great pictures we have us pitching as our forte?!
We will “Shock and Awe?!” The baseball world!
BC is obviously a genius and at least two steps ahead of me with his "addition by subtraction" strategy.
Guys with the initials DK are really good at their jobs! You and Don keep up the good work!!!
Are the pirates flipping how they see the bullpen. It seems like outside of Skenes, and Keller, they are using two starters a game. Ashcraft/Chandler etc. are we seeing what maybe the pitching staff looks like next year. Two starters per game, with a closer sprinkled in?
I just read that the Pirates just got their Major League record 17th shutout of the season!
Charrington probably got an extension
I'm tired of this. We a terrible for 3/4 of the season, then when we are eliminated and the pressure is off we miraculously start playing well. But all this end of season winning only serves to give us false hope for next season. Baseball is a much easier game when the pressure is off, call me they do this when it matters.
A functioning GM yes, but how about a functioning OWNER? Who is willing to WRITE THE DAMN CHECK!
Could you not follow up with the source who said Cherington would be gone and ask him for a status update???
Better ball means Cherington’s job is safe. It don’t take much with Nutting.
We've seen this movie before, where they're playing playoff spoiler, instead of contending for a playoff spot themselves. They play good when the season has been dead for five months now, not when the season is still alive.
It's addiction by subtraction, DK, Triolo getting his chance to shine. Who would have thought he'd be a base stealing threat?
Wait wait wait, there are Cherrington defenders? HOW?!?? Kelly is one of the bright spots of the season. Although with the way this franchise thinks, makes you feel like they won’t extend his contract. Hopefully I’m wrong.
Cheringtons 6 years here 6 last place finishes and 76 wins the most he's gotten. Enough said!
All this now means nothing !! We are BAD !! Dont bring back cherington , pham suwinski , triolo—If you sign just 3 real major league hitters , they could make the playoffs !! Id be ok with keeping kelley but wouldnt bother me either way
Unfortunately, this hot "streak" is just giving Cherington another offseason to further tank the team.
Does Cruz have a ticking clock with Pittsburgh?
I like watching Kelly's postgame interviews. Even when they've lost, he stays positive. I've often thought that he's a person I'd like to work for in any capacity.
The team isn't that far off. Please spend some money!
One of the talking heads on the MLB Network said that the Pirate players want the word interim removed from Don Kelly's title. I can't say if it was speculative or fact
Playing great baseball. Unfortunately it doesnt count now. All its gonna do is give the owner confidence that next season should stay status quo.
Thank you DK. Don Kelly is a good coach, but he could be great if he had better choices. They would be in the playoffs otherwise. They need hitters. Great show DK
These winning streaks are very frustrating because it shows the Pirates’ potential that management doesn’t want to actually maximize
Cherington will be back, guaranteed. Don Kelly, as good of a job as people want to think he's done (he's .500 since taking over as manager) will be back next season as well. The Pirates need a GM and a manager from a real organization, not guys who only know the Pirates way.
The fact that the Pirates are back up to .500 under Don Kelly is encouraging, especially for next season.
Letting go of Kiner-Falefa was a mistake, but then, so was the Bednar trade. Their trio of new pitchers
(Ashcraft, Chandler, Oviedo) will bolster the starting rotation, provided that Keller improves, as well, and
that Skenes (with help from the front office) doesn't find greener fields of diamond dreams, long before
he is eligible for free agency. While Kelly has done a good job of sustaining morale, the Bucs should be
thinking ahead to a time when Andrew McCutchen becomes the new manager, following his retirement.
If they continue to cultivate their farm system, and avoid self-inflicted damage, they will be contenders.
Those are big "ifs." But if a .200 hitter like O'Neil Cruz can lead the league in stolen bases, anything is
possible–even a civic-minded owner, and a knowledgeable general manager. It's just a matter of when.
Is the recent better playing just more false hope. History tells us yes. Dodgers have over 200 HR's on the season, the Pirates are last in MLB, just reaching 100 HR's. Yet both teams have 2 HR's in this very strange series. More to follow !
