Alex Bregman Reportedly Set to Opt Out of Red Sox Contract, Test 2025 MLB Free Agency

  1. He’s somehow going to get traded to one of the r/NLbest teams for a bag of baseballs and end up being the cornerstone of the franchise going forward.

  2. Giving up 41M per year, 83M total? He won’t get more then that per year. More total money maybe, he knows he’s cooked in 2 years

  3. As a Sox fan, I’m curious why this is coming out now? Like why not keep that to yourself until the season is over?

  4. At least we didn’t screw up the bag like that, despite everything else about ATL’s season

  5. Are you guys serious in this comment thread??? This is like saying water is wet and some of you guys are like oh no how could he?
He had a top 4 year in his career after a 5 year slump (where he still averaged 5-6 WAR) and the 3b market was not built for him to get a big deal last year, he wants 36-40 for 6-10 fully guaranteed, not 80m total

  6. I’m not even the biggest Bregman fan but if he goes on to have a Beltre career arc that’s gonna suck

  7. The Scott Boras cycle

Player tests free agency —> player signs mega deal —> new player who bets on himself doesn’t get the big deal he’s looking for —> he signs a short deal with opt outs —> “Scott Boras is washed” —> player opts out —> Player tests free agency

Rinse and repeat. Every single offseason.

  8. If what [Passan was reporting](https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/46139027/2025-mlb-free-agency-offseason-early-intel-contracts-schwarber-tucker-imai-bregman-alonso) (ALWAYS better to go to the original link, OP and other posters) is correct:

    >After one of the more lucrative pillow contracts ever, Bregman is bound to get the five-year-plus deal at an average annual value of $35 million-plus that eluded him last winter.

I don’t doubt that is likely. (Whether it should be, or not, is another question.)

If Bregman wants $40M or more, AND for 4-5 years? Sox may play hardball.

  9. Im old and jaded, but i wonder if this best year in 5 seasons at the age of 31 is a ped bump.

Like if he misses 60 games to start next year would anyone be surprised?

  10. I really don’t get this. **NO ONE** is gonna give him $40M/year over the next two years. I can’t even see him getting $30M annually given his age and injury history.
