Pittsburgh Steelers vs New York Jets PREVIEW! Week 1 2025

[Music] All right, guys. What’s going on? Welcome in. First preview of the season. I cannot freaking wait. I cannot wait until Sunday. Steelers at Jets week one. The start of the Aaron Glenn era officially begins. Let’s freaking go, man. It’s going to be a lot of fun. So, right, lots of story lines coming into the game. It seems like uh the players, the organizations don’t really, you know, they’re not dumping fuel onto the like media fire, if you will. It sounds like a lot of the storylines are like trying to be driven home, but like Aaron Glenn’s not really, you know, hyping it up. Justin Fields isn’t really hyping it up. Aaron Rogers isn’t really hyping it up. The whole Rogers against his old team, Justin Fields against his old team, that whole thing. And honestly, it’s probably in the backs of these guys’ heads a little bit. But at the end of the day, you know, this is a long season and uh you know, I’m happy that the Jets can start off the season. I think this is going to be a really good measuring stick uh type of game. Why? Because the Pittsburgh Steelers are well coached. They have a veteran team. They are projected to uh make the playoffs again. And with all these new additions, DK Medaf, Jaylen Ramsay, Aaron Rodgers, um Derek Harman, first round pick, like you’re looking at that squad saying this team is no joke. No joke. Now, of course, you know, I don’t think the Steelers are a perfect team. I do think they have a couple flaws, but, you know, overall to start the year off against a team like the Pittsburgh Steelers, it’ll be a really good opportunity for the Jets to just, you know, see how they stack up against one of the AFC’s better teams. So, so let’s dive into this thing. Let’s focus in on the Jets defense first because, you know, at the end of the day, this is a defensive team. We have multiple multiple allp pro players on this Jets defense. Some elite top end talent, right? Gardner, Quincy Williams, Quinnon Williams. Can Will McDonald take another step in his young career? The addi the late addition of Harrison Phillips, Damen Sherwood manning that middle of the field with this new Steve Wilgs, Aaron Glenn defense. Uh Andre Cisco, right? Brand new newcomer. Uh kind of that rangy center fielder. There’s a lot to like about this defense. I don’t love the depth being completely honest. You know, if you start getting past the starting group, uh some positions are strong, some aren’t. So, it does feel very topheavy in my opinion. But regardless, I think there is going to be absolutely no way that this defense is a bottom five, bottom 10 unit in football. It just I I think the goal for Wils, the goal for Glenn, top 10 defense. And I do feel like we have the talent to do that. We have the talent to execute that. Now, if guys start getting hurt, again, depth concerns, that’s a whole another story, but that’s all hypothetical at this point. What can this Jets defense do to slow down Aaron Rogers and co this Pittsburgh Steelers um attack? Well, this offense probably won’t be one to one to last season, right? Fields, Russ, even though it’s Arthur Smith, even though Tomlin’s still the guy, even though the core of the team is still there, you just feel like, you know what, maybe they’re going to throw it a little bit more. Maybe instead of Arthur Smith 100%, it’s going to be Rogers input a little bit. It’s going to be this kind of mix between what Rogers likes and what Art likes. I don’t necessarily think that Arthur Smith should just give the keys to Rogers and just say, “Hey, this is your team. Do whatever you want to do, whatever you want, and it’s your play calls and just, you know, change things whenever.” Like I I think there’s got to be a little bit more structure in my uh opinion from afar looking at the Steelers team. up again. What is this Steelers offense really going to hope to accomplish? Well, I think a couple of newcomers are going to be well really three newcomers are are going to be the deciding factor in my opinion. Of course, DK Metaf on the outside by far the team’s best wide receiver, but I think John Smith and Caleb Johnson are two guys that are just flying under the radar right now. In Caleb Johnson, he was a third round pick here by Pittsburgh. This is someone who had 21 touchdowns a year ago, 21 TDs, 1,500 rushing yards. And granted, Iowa runs the football a lot, but man, this guy’s a bellcow. This guy just feels like a Pittsburgh Steeler. Um, so you got to think that he’s going to be involved in the offense in a big way, which is why the addition of Harrison Phillips was just so huge, right? getting a big run stuffer, a veteran who’s seen a lot of defense, who could play in a 4-3, he could play in a 3- four. Uh it doesn’t really matter the scheme, he can go out and uh you know, produce. And to line a guy up like that next to Quinnon Williams, all of a sudden, if you’re the opposing offensive line, you can’t just say, “All right, we’re doubling Quinn in and we’re going to just let, you know, this other kind of random DTackle, this uh turn style uh have one-on- ones, and he’ll be fine. We can manage that. But Quinnon is the is the big dog here. Quinnon is the one that we need to lock down. Now, you can’t really do that. Occasionally, Quinnon will be double team, but I feel like Harrison Phillips is too good of a player to just leave one-on-one on islands in the middle of the defensive line. I’m using Harrison to claw gaps. I’m using Harrison to be a a force. Free up Quinn the best you can, right? From Steve Wol’s perspective, but stopping Caleb Johnson in this running game, I think, is paramount, right? winning on first down, winning on second down to try to get to third and long. Because when you can get to third and long in the Steve Wils defense where you know there’s going to be a lot of blitzing and you all of a sudden are looking at Jamime and Sherwood and Quincy Williams, two guys that are fast, two guys that are strong, two guys that uh frankly fans wanted them to actually blitz more last season because they just feel like, you know, man, they could really be a force, right? blitzing right through the A and B gap. Uh being a quarterback spy, if you will. Like the these guys have a lot of potential to affect the passer. And we know Rogers age. We’ve seen a year of Rogers. He’s been with the Jets for two seasons. We know he’s dealt with injuries. Um this is not Josh Allen. This is not Lamar Jackson. This is not, you know, someone who I think is going to be running all over the place extending these these plays. I think we have enough horsepower on the defensive side of the football, specifically in the front, to be able to get home, right, to be able to rush the passer. It is paramount. If Rogers in the Steelers offense is providing clean pockets for the entire first half, I think it could be a long day. I really do believe that. But, and I know everyone wants to focus on like one-on-one matchups, right? Like Will McDonald against Roger Jones. Oh, the Jets might have a, you know, a little bit of an advantage there. But I I really think the the success is going to come in the blitzes, but the problem is if you’re failing on first down, you’re failing on second down, you’re giving up six yards, four yards, five yards, and the Steelers are constantly lining up in third and three, third and one. All of a sudden, the blitzes aren’t all that effective because the ball has to come out quickly. Well, the offense only needs one yard to get it. So, you might as well, you know, dial up a play where the ball’s coming out quickly, right? So, it’s designed to perfectly uh to perfectly counter the blitz. So, again, it’s kind of football 101, but trying your best to stop the run with Harrison Phillips clogging lanes um to win first and second down and to get into those money situations, those money downs, right? those third and longs where now you can just, you know, let the dogs loose and just have him attack the quarterback position, get Quincy Williams in the back field, have him because he has the potential to just blow right through the offensive line, right? Uh roll um I mean, man, there’s so many different things that you can do, but you can just for example, but one example, run Q1 stunts, right? Run this guy. Everyone’s every game, every week, everyone’s so focused on Quinnon Williams. No one’s ever focused on the other defensive tackle. There’s such a big emphasis on slowing Q down as a pass rusher, as a run stopper. Send him on a stunt to be the decoy to open up that offensive line and have Sherwood or Quincy fly in like a missile and get to the quarterback. It’s a lot easier to do that on third and 10, 11, 12, 13 than it is again on like a third and three, third and four. Um, and we also know know too that, you know, yes, of course Rogers is not mobile. Yes, of course he’s dealt with injuries and he’s older, but he gets frustrated. We’ve seen a full year of him throw players under the bus, uh, miss guys, get uh, kind of uh, as the game proceeds, he gets more and more inaccurate and he just has this level of frustration. and he just kind of boils over. Um looking at teammates weird, having like sideline um tantrums is kind of a big word word, but like there’s moments where he’s, you know, just like huffing and puffing with a towel over his head, looking at a tablet, getting frustrated. If the Jets can get to him like that early in the game, I think that will that’s kind of where Glenn wants wants, you know, to to get Rogers, right? He wears his emotions on his sleeve. It’s pretty easy to see if you’re getting it into his head. So, and I’m not even saying, you know, unrealistically, oh, we need three sacks by halftime, but if you could just get to the quarterback, if you could hit him, get him on the ground early, or even just simply disrupting the rhythm, right, where you’re uh just essentially pressuring the quarterback, maybe he can’t step up in the pocket, right? Quinnon breaks through, wins a one-on-one, he’s in the face now Rogers has to fade back, maybe he has to split left, split right. Uh maybe Will McDonald beats Roger Jones on a play action, like an eightstep play action play. And all of a sudden when Rogers back foot is hitting, Will McDonald is right there, you know, arriving at the same time. Now Rogers has to quickly step up and try to rush the throw, climbing the pocket. So it’s it’s things like that where I feel like the Jets can really take advantage of um may potentially using Michael Carter in like weak side blitzes, you know, Malachi Moore, will he have an impact? I think really for me the two biggest X factors in this game or on the defensive side of the football rather. Number one, Tony Adams kind of feels like he’s the weak spot, the weakest link right now of the Jets defense. Again, I feel good about the starting edge rushers and the linebackers and Cisco at free safety, the corners. But with Tony Adams, there was multiple times where there were poor angles being taken to the football last season, multiple m uh broken tackles when he was, you know, supposed to be on top of it. multiple uh opportunities to just uh simply wrap up an open space, come downhill, make a tackle, and the guy breaks free. And now that hitch that goes for four yards is now a gain of eight, a gain of 12 because of a simple missed tackle. And Rogers has played against these guys. He knows the strengths, the weaknesses of these players. And Tony Adams was a starter last season. So granted, he he’s in a different role this season, but if Tony is struggling, if the if you know, we’re seeing these poor angles being taken and we’re seeing guys just slip through tackles, it just feels like we can’t give Pittsburgh the benefit like that. We have to be on top of our stuff. And, you know, unfortunately, you do just kind of zero in on, I would say, right now like the the questionable position, the questionable starter, which is someone that Rogers has practiced many, many times against. So, if Tony Adams can grow, if if he can, and I’m not even saying like he needs to be dominant, right? Needs to end the day with 11 tackles, two passes defended against, and a pick, forced fumble, right? But if he could just do the little things, right? Again, wrap open space. If he can maybe disrupt a route lane, right, he’s there. Rogers is thinking pre-step. Okay, I know where I’m going with the football. He drops back. He gets to that read knowing he’s going to throw it. And then, wait, hold on. Tony Adams is right there. He’s about to blow up the play. now I got to adjust and move on. I think little things like that is something that again the Jets just struggled with it massively last season. Um and you know you would hope as a Jet fan that the tackling overall is better and whatnot. I don’t want to just come down on one guy here but again just feels like the weakest link right now of the starters. Now I think for me the other X-factor and we just talked about him before it’s Harrison Phillips. if he’s successful with stopping the run, if he can hang one-on-one and then, you know, again, clog lanes, take on double teams, free up Q, uh there’s that that’s a really really really good pickup to add to your team at a very important position, albeit a massive position of need a couple weeks before the season. If he can go out there and look smooth in this defense, go out there and just look seamless fit. Boom. He’s in the lineup. He’s stopping the run, I think this defense should be okay. By the way, I I want to see Sas Gardner traveling. F. He’s He’s the number one highest paid corner in football. Follow DK around. They have He has a very good body type to to cover DK. I think that’s something that um the Jets simply need to employ. I if we’re rolling out there and Gardner is only covering one side of the field, I I I think that’s just going to uh bother me quite frankly. So, let’s flip it. Let’s look at the offense now. What can Justin Fields, what can Tanner Inkstrand do to have success against the Steelers defense? This God, I love the Steelers defense, man. So many great players, such a welloiled machine. Patrick Queen, newcomer Jaylen Ramsay, right? Cam Hayward, the vet, Patrick Queen, what one of the best linebackers in football, like Highmith, TJ Watt, right? Tons of great players. Where’s the weak spot, right? Where can the Jets potentially exploit? I I think one thing that just instantly the Jets can hang their hat on is just the simple fact Tanner Strand doesn’t have a lot of experience doing this. You know, there’s not a lot of tape that Mike Tomlin and Co can watch. You know, tannering strands, third down tendencies. What does he like to call on third and longs? You know, what are maybe the red zone um packages looking like? We don’t there is none of that stuff. Yeah, you can look at what the Lions were doing, but that’s it’s not one to one. It feels very much wide open. And I wonder what approach the Steelers are going to have on defense. Are they going to maybe sit back, play it safe a little bit, and just kind of monitor, okay, what are the Jets going to do, or are they going to be foot slammed on the gas pedal, ultraaggressive, blitzing like crazy? The Steelers are one of uh the highest blitz rate teams in uh in football. So, I expect with their pass rushers and their blitzers, them to be pretty active in that department. But again, I I think when you just look at straight personnel, we have to try to take advantages where we can. And if we do look at the front three, right, newcomer Derrick Harmon, he’s been he’s he’s listed as questionable. He’s been banged up. He’s missed some time. We look at Keanu Benton, he’s listed as questionable. It’s looking like he’s going to play, but it’s still worth noting he’s missed some time. He’s he’s he’s been uh he’s not 100%. Cam Hayward has been holding out. So, can that front three potentially be taken advantage of? Can our three interior guys hold up against the Steelers defensive line? Right. Specifically Hayward, Benton, and Harmon. I think that could again it maybe I think the matchup bodess well because of the timing of it all. Is there going to be rust? Is there going to be rookie mistakes from a guy in uh Derek Harbin? Um you know, I I I I think it’s just an area to watch because we know the Jets are going to run the ball. But with that said, do the Jets come out and throw it maybe a little bit more? Mike Tomlin addressed it uh in his most recent press conference where he talked about, hey, we know the Jets want to run the ball. They’re built to run the ball. Look at their depth chart that they just released. It It’s clear they’re not going to be throwing it 40 times a game. They’re not going to, you know, be relying on Justin Field’s arm to win them games every single week. What this team wants to do is run the ball. It feels like everyone in the world knows it. So, I wonder if the Jets being in Metife Stadium, having just weeks, I mean, frankly, months to prepare for this game, do they come out with some scripted plays, you know, getting Garrett Wilson involved in the slot a little bit? Garrett Wilson, by the way, we’ve talked about the benefits of playing Garrett in the slot. Does Jaylen Ramsay follow Garrett? We also know that Garrett is one of the most effective wide receivers going up against the Blitz. And that’s probably because we’ve had a lot of uh poor quarterback play and a lot of poor wide receiver play outside of Garrett. So, it’s almost like, hey, when there is a blitz, where is G5? He’s being targeted. So, with a blitz heavy team like this in Pittsburgh, is that a potential maybe matchup that you can look at, right? Could Garrett actually have a big day? I know on the surface it’s like okay fields could be some growing pains, could be some rust, some speed bumps, Tanner Ring Strand, maybe some mistakes, uh, will the passing game really get going? But I think if you know, you think about and you put yourself in Tanner’s shoes, I think you got to use Garrett as like a matchup nightmare, right? Really move him around. but specifically in the slot, finding him again in those critical money downs, those blitzing situations. Where is Wilson and can Fields of course get the football to him? But for me, I think the biggest thing that I want to see is Justin Fields legs. We have not, and by we, I mean Jets fans, we have not had a quarterback like this in I don’t even know how long. Someone who can move like Fields, someone who can run like this guy. I mean, he’s one of the best running quarterbacks in the National National Football League. Great Steelers fans know this. He is a dynamic dynamic runner. I mean, think about all these quarterbacks that we’ve had throughout the year. Zack Wilson, Mike White, Josh Macau, Bryce Petty, Aaron Rogers, um Joe Flacco, we’re these are not mobile dudes. I mean, Zach was elusive, but he’s not, you know, the size of Justin. He he does not have nearly the strength that Fields does, uh, nor the speed. So, I’m really excited to see how the Jets implement Justin Field’s legs. I really want the Jets to highlight that ability. Put it on display. Don’t just Hey, yeah, it’s another tool in the toolbox. I understand that. But as a staff, really utilize this dude’s legs. It is a true weapon. You know, all of a sudden, you can go from a sack or a throwaway or a pass where, you know, frankly, just a dirted pass. You know, screen doesn’t open up. uh your number one option isn’t there and you are you know you’re against the blitz so you have to get rid of the ball somehow. All these negative plays or all these you know plays that go for zero in the past potentially turn into positive plays with Justin Fields. His his legs picking up you know even if it’s a gain of three it’s a positive play and the clock is moving. You know I I think consistently building positive plays is going to be a theme throughout the course of the season. It always is whenever you’re talking about a run ccentric team. you you can’t be going backwards. Um, so I think for fields, man, take care of the football. Be decisive and use your legs. Use your legs. Complete passes. Use your legs. Sunday should be a lot of fun. I think the Jets right now are two and a half point underdogs at home against Pittsburgh. Right now, the buzz is that uh the Steelers fans are really going to try to pack Met life. And uh, credit them, right? Credit the uh, the Steelers fans because they travel well. They they show out. They represent. I’m down here in Florida. I see Steelers fans pretty regularly, right? Big big following. East coast, West Coast, they’re they’re all over the place. Uh great great fan base. But um yeah, Justin Fields offensively utilize his legs almost have the approach of like, you know, death by a thousand cuts. You know, a gain of three isn’t the end of the world. Utilize first and second down to get into these third and shorts. Then it opens everything up. Then the defense is kind of on their heels a little bit, you know, because it could be a deep pass, it could be an intermediate pass, short pass, Justin Field scrambling, it could be a screen, left, right, inside run, outside run, you know, hit routes over the middle of the field to the tight end position. We didn’t even talk about Mason Taylor, Galani Woods, does he make an impact? Third and short. Can you get into those third and shorts offensively? And then defensively, pressure. I think it’s all I think pressure is the name of the game when it comes to going up against immobile quarterbacks that have had injuries before in the past that you know cannot really extend. So, let me know your thoughts down below in the comments section. Who do you got winning? Thanks so much for watching and as always, go Jets. [Music]

  1. I hope they’re conditioned for a full 60 minutes. Every year week 1 you see teams with multiple guys cramping up and fading into the 4th quarter.

  2. I’m not so so worried about depth throughout the season because we have Glenn. I remember how riddled that lions team was with injuries last season to the point where it felt as if they had more backups than starters on that defense…But Aaron Glenn still kept the ship afloat even when they were treading water

  3. I look at it this way, if we had a good head coach and a good kicker last year, the Jets just may have made the playoffs in the AFC.
We only had 5 wins but, lost 6 games by a TD or less.
This year, we have what seems to be a good coach and are reunited with our Folk hero to kick FGs.
So, let's turn those close losses into tight wins this year and break the playoffs curse! LFGJ!!

  4. I hope Breece has a monster game much less a monster year.
If we're going to establish a run game or be a run heavy team, we need to have him step up and not just rely on Allen.

  5. I called 4 sacks before halftime a week ago lol idk I just feel it. I think jets will be all over the place and blitzing a lot more than just 3rd downs. LGJ.

  6. It will all come down to coaching I think. Do the jets play aggressively , do they blitz rodgers or play Saleh cover 3 all so scared defense? On offense, is it run, run, run kick ? Is it always in the shotgun for pass plays and under center for run, or do they mix it up? Do we see multiple RB backfield or the sale old single back on runs, empty backfield on passing downs? Do we see pre snap motion, rpo, pa or is it more like the high school play calling we saw in pre season?

Do the players come out with fire, like in the green bay preseason game or the zombies we saw against the giants? Are they ready for week 1 or do we hear the standard excuse, it is week 1, takes weeks to get into the groove. Do the jets play disciplined or is it stupid penalties the way we have seen.

This is where the rubber hits the road, is Glenn's culture change real, have they changed, or do we see another D coach when it comes to game time, play like an old woman, afraid? Saleh talked big and delivered nothing. Glenn is not Saleh, he hasn't been word salad or promised the crow will fight the eagle. But he has to produce a team where the coaching is just as disciplined and aggressive as the players. I like Glenn and his approach , seeing signs of the culture change with players taking charge, let's hope he and his coaching staff walk the walk.

Ian, you really should do the game time stream with Tyson at ltjr, would be awesome ,you would be the color guy/ analyst, Tyson the emotional guy.

Let's hope that they don't think that can run on every down,we had that with Gase and gore.

  7. I think the key to this game will be what version of Aaron Rodgers shows up! Is he gonna throw a pick 6 to give us the W? Or are we going to have to EARN it and have the defense make a stop; I think this game is a legitimate great matchup- our DL versus Steelers OL and Sauce vs DK will be fun to watch. Can’t let Jaylen Warren beat us on 3rd down either.
