🔴LIVE 🔴 Los Angeles Angels vs Kansas City Royals/September 04 / Mlb the show 25

League on tap. It’s the Los Angeles Angels going up against the Kansas City Royals. And now, please welcome. All right, we’ll be back to get this one started after this. Kansas City Royals. Just about set to go now. And towing the slab here, Luender Avila and Singy. We were talking earlier about how he’s doing a great job navigating through tough spots. I’ve just been so impressed with when it seems like there’s more pressure, he’s more calm and settles in. He’s done an incredible job with runners in scoring position. Most guys, they get a little tight, they start to aim the baseball. But for some reason, he gets looser, the ball comes out of his hand with more life, and he’s able to wiggle off the hook of, you know, tough situations and get his team back in the dugout. Zack Neto the leadoff batter as he looks at ball one. First pitch 640. The 10 swing and a miss as he was out front. Lifted in the air left field pretty well struck. Loftton in position, hauls it in for the out. All right, let’s take a look at the Angels lineup. One of the more high-powered lineups in the game right now. It’s built to do damage and they got some hitters that could punish the baseball. Chris, so fun to watch these players take their at bats. I mean, they’re so disciplined. Don’t give not just at bats away, but really pitches away. Very aggressive, competitive in the zone. And when they connect, there’s usually some loud noise to it. So, we’ll keep our ears open today. Luis Rangifo batting with one down. Takes a strike. One out. Base is empty. And that’s way high. And one and one. And that one is lifted in the air. He’s got it. And there’s two away. Batting third. Third base Yan Mona. Two down. Base is empty. Here is Yan Mona. He’s been a great free agent sign. And a breaking ball drops in for a strike. First pitch change up. He gets a called strike. You got to really know who that hitter is at the plate in order to throw that pitch again and again. And that gets down for a base hit. So a two out knock keeps the inning alive. Here’s Joe Adell. Good power. Not great in the OBP department. Swing and a miss. Strike one. Adele goes six feet three in batting in the cleanup spot. A former first round pick back in 2017. [Music] Monata coming home. He’ll score. Well, they strike first as he gets the job done to bring home the run. Just a cookie down the middle. I mean, those are the ones you dream about. The ones in the cage you’re just hoping you get in the ball game. Right down the middle, not a whole lot of velocity. Right on top of it. So, runner at second, two down. Now, here is Logan Ohappy. This is another guy capable of hitting tape measure home runs. And that one missing low and the righty deals. That’s a strike and the count even at one. Well, we call that keyholeing. Even though it’s right there and looks pretty good, if he doesn’t love it, he’s not going to swing that early in the count. Outside and that’s ball two. He caught it behind his back and they get the out. Angels get one on this double. It’s now one- nothing. You’re watching Major League Baseball exclusively on the show. Back here at Kaufman Stadium and on the hill in this one, Reed Deetmers. And a guy like this is going to keep you in the ball game. He’s going to go out there, compete. Not going to see a whole lot of flare and flash, but he’s going to hand it over to the bullpen at some point. And if you’ve been able to score a few runs, you’ll be in it late. So, we’ll see if he’s able to do that for his club in this one. Bottom of the first. So, up now for Kansas City. Mel Garcia. Chris, he’s definitely going to finish the year with a new careerhigh in homers. We just don’t know how many he’s going to hit quite yet. Misses off the plate. Ball one. [Music] Strike one. And that one clips the corner. line drive makes the grab. One away. And here now the lineup for the Royals. A guy who’s been huge for them over the last month plus. Vinnie Pasquantino. And he’s leading them in runs batted in this season, which tells me this guy is able to slow things down when it seems like there’s a little bit of pressure. And he’s looking at as an opportunity to do damage. You know, a lot of guys, they see runners on base and they get big. They feel like all this pressure. I’ve got to get these runs in. But somehow he seems to settle into these situations. So watch out when he comes to the plate. The other way and that’s a base hit. So a man aboard now with one away. Batting third base, Vinnie. And next up for the Royals, Vinnie Pasquantino. Go Vinnie and immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter. Let’s keep it going. And that misses off the outside edge. line drive and that should be extra bases. Here comes Whit around third. He’ll score easily. Comes through with the RBI. Fast ball pretty much middle middle and that’s what you fall asleep dreaming about as a hitter. So, no surprise he put a great swing on it. one out. Runner at second. Perez will hit next. Just missed. A lot of pitchers have caught on to how good he is hitting the first pitch. Smart to avoid the zone right there. That’s off the mark and the count is two and0. That clips the corner. Tied up here in the early going. That one fouled off. Two and two. And that’s outside and ball four to a board. Man, that’s a tough one to take on the full count, but I guess he saw it really well. It’s a really nice plate appearance. Here comes Mike Ystreky to the play. He’s been really clutch with runners in scoring position this season, so they’ll have to be extra careful in this matchup. Well, all eyes on the double play ball in this spot. No better way to get out of this inning. Runners at first and second with one gone. Swinging a ground ball and foul ball. And one and two. Man, oh man. I don’t know how you take that pitch. That’s as close as it gets. Got him. Two out. Oh, you got to be ready to swing the bat with a runner in scoring position in two strikes. Just put the ball in place somewhere and you got a chance. Very frustrating for him, I’m sure. See if the next guy can pick him up. Randall Gritic. Now, I’m curious how he decides to attack on the mound. This guy at the plate has been great hitting under pressure this year. And a swing and a miss. Gosh, a little late on that breaking ball. I don’t think he recognized it out of the hand. Just a little tardy. Going to have to regroup here. Gets a piece there. We’ll do it again. Definitely got the hitter conscious of the pitch inside. Really think the outer half is open. line drive caught. KC gets one on the double. All even at one a piece. Back after this on the show. And we’re back. New inning getting started. And the batter now, Chris Taylor. Ava back to work. Swing and a ball lifted left field. Loftton flying after this one. Grabs it on the run. And there’s one away. That’s just a really nice catch on the run right there. He saved extra bases for sure. If the pitcher’s his friend, he’ll give him a second to catch his breath before he’s ready to deal the next pitch. Matthew Lugo stands in now and watches strike one and strike two. Benny really sells the change up with that arm action. Eric Summersgill with home plate duty in this one. kind of known for being generous with the corners, Chris. You know, I think that used to be a lot bigger deal in past eras where pitchers were working more in and out with their pitches, but yeah, we’ll see if those corners come into play in this one. Hey, no pitcher going to argue at all. What about an umpire’s height? How much of a role does that play in your experience and what the strike zone is like? Yeah, I think it pushes the strike zone up a little bit, which you know, as a former hitter, you like that. You wanted the ball up. You didn’t want to have to deal with stuff down in the zone. consistently pulled the string on the change up. Two outs, space is empty. Oswald PZA the next to hit for the Angels. Swing and a highf fly ball deep left field. That one’s carrying. And it’s into the bullpen for a homer. And the Halos jump out in front. It’s 2-1. He absolutely feasts on right-handed pitching and devours that one for a homer. And you can see that’s what he expects of himself at bat after at bat. He’s that confident with a low 90s fast ball. You have to live on the edges and hit your spots. If you don’t, you’ll get hit hard. Really good swing there. Patient. Waited for it. It was like BP all over again. Next to hit number 22. First pitch misses. And another ball. Avia maybe a little less aggressive on the mound right now after that home run. Chris. Yeah, it seems that way. You know, pitchers, they can come out, feel good, but then all of a sudden get touched up a little bit and they start trying to in plenty of time to first. That’s out number three. Angels get one with a solo homer. And this is now a 2-1 ball game. It’s Major League Baseball and it’s on the show and welcome back to the ballpark. Here’s Adam Frasier. Adam Frasier Casey. Come on. Let’s go. Inside one and0. [Music] And that is out of play. [Music] That misses and the count two and one. Good spot there, but didn’t get the strike at the knees and doesn’t seem too convinced by the call out there on the mound as he tries to get a better sense of the umpire strike zone. [Music] And that one in the air center field has this one sized up. Puts it away for the out. batting eight leftielder Nick Nick Loftton steps in for the Royals. Good defender. He’s been inconsistent offensively. That’s in there and one, man. I mean, nice job just presenting it to be better than it actually was. One down. Base is empty. Swings and lines a base hit into left field. Anything but pretty right there, but he’ll take it every time. He clearly didn’t catch that one on the big part of the bat. Just kind of muscled it out there. And you know, on the mound, it can be pretty frustrating for a pitcher, but you just kind of have to expect those to drop in there sometimes. Run around at first with one gone. And now it’s Kyle Isbel at 96. That pitch is in for a strike. Tying run is at first. Bottom half of inning number two. on the ground and it goes just foul. Fouled off and they’ll do it again. Foul ball. It stays nothing and two. Let’s keep it going. swing and a ball drilled in the air towards right center field. Hauls it in for the O. Now batting third base Mel Garcia. So the lineup flips over now. The third baseman Mikel Garcia. He’s 0 for one. He’s kind of an outlier, especially when guys are consciously sacrificing contact to deliver power. Yeah, his swing is so good. It’s in the zone a long time. He gets the barrel to it a lot and that produces more base hits. That’s in there. And that is strike one. When you look at the elite teams in the game right now, there is going to be the slug. No question about it. But the really good offensive teams combined slug with more tosses to first. That is the inning. So one hit is all they get. We play two full Angels two and the Royals won. Back here in Kansas City, the batter will be the shortstop. Zack Neto taken high in the draft. He’s had that top prospect label over him since he put on a professional uniform, but at some point that starts to go away and you’ve got to produce at the big league level. That one finds the zone. Strike one. Yeah. And the domino effect of that is running up pitch counts on pitchers and then either getting them to a place of fatigue or getting into the bullpen perhaps before you get to those higher leverage arms at the back end. Swing and a miss as he was late that time. One of the things that Jim Leland used to say when I was broadcasting with the Marlins, the longer a plate appearance goes for a batter, the more likely it is that something good will happen for the hitter. One down. Now batting second. Now it’s the second baseman Luis Ranifo. Fly to left his first time. Yeah. And I figured you would get caut into this because you had a free dinner at his house the other night. That is true. One down, base is empty. And that one fouled off. That missed by a lot. And count one and two. And a swing and a miss. Down on strikes now. Two away. Stood absolutely no chance on that slider right there. And I don’t mean to laugh, but that’s a tough one. I mean, pretty much a perfect strikeout pitch. I mean, it looks like a fast ball middle in kind of has cutter action and it just bunches you up to whereas you can’t get your hands through and the barrel to it. And not much you can do unless you recognize the spin early and you spit on it. Hit on the ground to short. Whit over to first. Angels retired. One, two, three. Angels held in check, but they still lead it two to one. Back here at Kaufman Stadium, set for the bottom of the third. Now here’s Bobby Wit Jr. W Jr. You know, Boo, this is a player with some serious speed. In 2023, he became the first player in 20 years to record two infield hits and an inside the park home run in the same game. Swinging a foul straight back. One ball, two straight. Foul ball. Still a one and two count. battling here as he fouls it away. That wasn’t an easy pitch to hit. It’s much easier to do damage against mistakes, but that’s not what that pitch was. Just misses. Two and two. Was good pitch there. really had some brun and finished a little up and end just on the edge. And that’s one of those if you swing at it, you got a broken bat as you jog back to the dugout. And now the count is full. And another power hitter lurking in the on deck circle. There’s a swing and a drive. out of here. His 21st of the year and this game is tied. It’s 2-2. He kept swinging and it paid off. Well, that was a battle boo and he just kept taking his cuts. Finally squared one up. [Applause] They thought he could blow a high fast ball by him, but he was ready for it. Look at how quickly he jumped on that pitch. So, it’s all tied up thanks to the home run. And now the first baseman, Vinnie Pasquantino. [Applause] That’s in there. It’s 0 and one. Part of the order coming through now. And with one home run already in this inning, they’re definitely looking to do some more damage. The 01 and a breaking ball misses outside. Foul ball there and down on strikes and that’s the first out. Nice recovery after giving up the homer. Oh, that’s a curve ball that I’m sure he wants back at the plate. Two strikes, the sort of pitch you’re hoping for. a bit of a mistake and I’d say in a very hitable location, but clearly the break was enough to get him to swing through it. And now it’s Salvador Perez to the play. He reached out to walk his first time and a foul ball. popped up to the left into foul ground. Mona makes the grab. That’s out number two. Now batting the hitter, Mikey. Mike Ystreky up here. went down on strikes his first time through. And a base hit right there and that keeps the inning going. Up next for the Royals. And now Randall Gritic. Randall Gritick. ground ball up the middle. That’s a base hit. Lead runner to second with two gone. Couple of singles back to back. He wasn’t able to elevate it, but he put a great swing on it. Right on time. Good balanced approach and just blasted it through the infield. Here’s the second baseman, Adam Frasier. [Music] And there’s a strike on the outside corner. Though Chris, through the early stages, he hasn’t been very efficient in terms of the pitch count. He’s going to need to get some quick outs if he’s going to get deeper into this game. Perhaps not quite ready to hit. First two pitches by him for a couple of strikes. Now back is against the wall. He’s going to have to figure something out and figure it out quickly. on a line and that’s the third out. The Royals get a run in the inning on this solo homer. And we’re deadlocked now at two a piece. You’re watching Major League Baseball on the show. And we’re back all set for the start of the inning. So now the Angel cleanup hitter, Joe Adell. That one the other way and that’s just foul. That misses the zone and that’s ball one on the ground right side. Frasier onto first in time. One up, one down. Now batting catcher Logan. And here’s the catcher Logan Ohappy. Grounded out back to the pitcher his first time. That misses and it’s one and0. All one, no strike. Rolled softly, but that goes foul. All tied up. Top half of inning number four. Next pitch is outside. Pretty easy to give up on that pitch right there. Started on the edge of the plate with the spin. You know it’s going to finish well off the plate. swings through the fast ball up in the zone. Foul ball. Another 2-2 upcoming. I wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball. Try to go again with a fast ball. Slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching up. And there’s a ball. Eighth pitch of the at coming up. Swing and a hard hit liner up the middle and a base hit. He forced a lot of pitches to be thrown and ends up collecting a hit. Well, a swing like that can help you come out of the struggle. Well, we saw the numbers coming into the ball game, but all he’s trying to do at this point is help his team win. Here comes Chris Taylor. Fly to left his first time. Ball one, no strikes. Taylor, a middle infielder by trade. Played as college baseball at the University of Virginia. Taylor measures 6 feet even. 34 year old vet. He joined the team as a free agent. Swing and a high-fly ball left field. Two away now. Now batting number 15. And now here’s a speed threat outfielder Matthew Luggo. He struck out swinging at his first atbat. Come on, Kansas City. There’s the strike. Oh, off of first with two away. [Music] Strike two. Quickly in an 02 count. You’ve got to figure out a way to shorten your path to the baseball. Put it in play somewhere. Then you got a chance upstairs. One and two to count. This hitter’s been seeing good velocity in the at bat. He’s kind of set up for that change up. He hasn’t seen it yet. Looks just like a fast ball out of the hand. Two outs. Hit on the ground to the right side. He takes it himself to the bag and that’ll do it. Angels leave one. Score remains 2-2. Welcome back. and they turn to a new arm as we kick off the bottom of the fourth. Number 56. This softball has been really good against left-handed hitters. Now the left fielder, Nick Loftton, one for one with a single so far. Loftton, there’s the strike. 95 of that one. Action in the pen down there. Jose Soraniano up and loosening in the pen. Silith getting loose as well. That’s inside. Ball one. Sliced hard but foul. Ah, that hit him and the leadoff man is aboard to start the inning. So up next, Kyle Isbel flyed to right his first time. Isel puts a bunt down. Neto for one over to first. Safe. Well, that was going to be a really tough one to turn two on. So, a nice job to get the out at second right there. Hold on to the baseball. Shortstop clearly paid the price, but that kind of comes with the territory. Mike El Garcia steps in for the Royals. Goal for two in this one. There’s the strike up high. Going one. That clips the inside corner for a strike. Man at first, one away. This to third to second for one. Throw off line. He’s safe. And a nice job there to keep it from getting away. Well, they had the chance of turning two right there, but I don’t think he got a good grip on the ball as he tried to transfer from glove to throwing hand. They say you can’t assume a double play. I beg to differ at the big league level, but it’s going to be ruled as a fieldielder’s choice. And now the short stop, Bobby Wit Jr. And that one lifted in the air center field. He makes the grab and that is the third out of the inning. So, one left for Kansas City. Score remains deadlocked at 2-2. We go to the top of the fifth at the plate. Oswalt PZA. PZA. [Music] Avia back to work. Oh, can’t pick it up cleanly. Oh, no waiting around right there. He was ready to swing it on the first pitch. Really good swing right there. He got a pitch that he knew he could handle. Allowed himself to stay back just a tad bit longer and he hit the ball on the screws. And now let’s see if they force some action with good wheels on the bases. Go ahead run on base. And now the center fielder. And that is in for a strike. 4 and one. Yeah, that’s a little high. This is one of those situations defensively where you can’t try to do too much. You got to make sure that you feel the ball cleanly and get one out first. It’s going to be tough to get two with this kind of speed in the batters box. swings over the top of that one with two strikes. May see some movement over there at first base. Trying to stay out of the double play right here. Next offering upstairs. Really good take especially with two strikes. Swing and a miss. And he got him. And he’s registered three Ks in this one. He came out of his mechanics there. Typically likes to shoot the ball the other way, but that time little anxious. Now it’s the Angels leadoff man, Zack Neto. right side. Gritic moving under this one. Makes the grab and there’s two down. Now batting second base Luis Renifo. Luis Renhifo gets a chance to hit here. Royals. And that one just misses a ball and no strikes. If he’s going to steal second, you want him to go early in the count. That way he’s not a distraction to the hitter at the plate. Go ahead and get it out. And that is that Angels strand one. And this game is still tied at two and two. And welcome back to the ballpark. We head to the bottom of the fifth and to the plate for Kansas City. Vinnie Pasquantino and the first pitch misses for ball one. Well, these Royals doing a good job of putting the ball into play and that makes things more challenging on the defensive side. The numbers tell us they’re averaging more than a hit every inning and they’ve only struck out twice. So, they keep finding ways to put their bat on the ball. Here’s the catcher, Salvador Perez. Let’s go, Royals. Let’s go, Royals. Just missed. And that one is in for a strike. on the ground to the left and foul ball. Great swing and solid contact. Just a little too quick. He’s got to stay back a little longer and he chases that one and now two gone. Now batting. Mike Estreky the next to hit. One for two. That’s in there and it’s 0 and one. Two down, nobody on. Last half of inning number five. Ground ball to the right side. PZA takes it to the bag. Three up, three down. Inning over. Nothing doing it for the Royals. Through five. All even at 2-2. Back here in Kansas City, here comes Yan Mona. Yeah, that’s fouled off. You know, these Angels, simply put, are producing a lot of quality swings. They’ve been lining the ball all over the ballpark and unfortunately sometimes it’s right into a glove. But still, they’ve hit nine line drives so far and that’s something they should feel very good about. And there’s a rocket into the outfield. Now he’ll turn for second in safely with a leadoff double. Go ahead runs in scoring position. Everything came together for him. Put a really nice balanced swing on it. And when you can rope one into the gap like that, you’re thinking extra bases from the first couple of steps out of the box. And he’ll feel real good about that one. A chance now to take the lead. And at this point in the game, that could be a deciding run. And the Royals manager making his way towards the mound now as he will make the move. Luender Aila gives way. And a decent effort considering he’s normally reliever. Back with the new pitcher in a minute. Now a new arm into the game. The righty number 38. Should be a good first match up for him here. He’s been doing a great job against right-handed bats so far this season. They’ve had a lot of trouble squaring him up. Runner in scoring position. No outs. Joe Adele the next to hit for the Angels. Late swing. Fouled all. Speaking of those line drives, you can’t get too discouraged when they don’t drop in for you. It’s important to remember that you pretty much did everything right, and that’s just baseball sometimes. Go ahead run at second and we’re the top half of the sixth. Can’t glove it cleanly. Still finds a way to get off a throw. The throw won’t get there in time and they don’t get the out. Couldn’t have timed it up any better than that. fielder got a piece of it, but the way that thing came off the bat, no surprise at all. He couldn’t pick it cleanly. It’s a very difficult play. And that swing definitely was deserving of a hit. First and second, no outs. And here is Logan O’Happy. There’s a strike. Hitter’s got some good opposite field power. What I like about something being hit to the right side into the outfield is that the base runner at second has a very good read and can determine whether or not he can score on that base hit. Swing and a miss. Well, you got the hitter already chasing that nasty slider. If you’re on the mound, you just want to expand the zone right now. Get a swing and miss and get through this at bat. Headed towards the corner. Gritic on the run. couldn’t get to it before it dropped fouled. Ah, ground ball and that’s through the infield headed for the plate. He will score and they take the lead. Runner stops at third and they’re at the corners with nobody out. We don’t see this a whole lot anymore where hitters with two strikes are willing to shorten up, tighten up and try to hit the ball back up the middle other way. He was trying to hit that hole, I believe. Very good at bat with two strikes. Chris Taylor now. First pitch and he just misses. Adele at third. Mohap on at first with nobody out. That one fouled off. Pitch misses and it’s two and one. Good spot for the hitter. Definitely has the advantage in this count with runners on. Look for him to be aggressive on this next pitch. Runner on the move. Hit hard on the ground to short over to first. Finally gets the first out here on the grounder. Now batting number 15. So digging in, Matthew Lugo. He’s been such a good hitter with runners in scoring position. Some guys just take it to another level. For him right now at the plate, it’s like everyone else is in slow motion and he’s in full speed. And that is downstairs. And that is ball one. Swung on. Belted. That ball’s carrying. Drops for a hit. He couldn’t run it down. He was all over that one. Got a fast ball middle of the plate. Jumped all over it. Absolutely smoked that ball. And stepping in is the speedy Oswald PZA. He launched the solo shot back in the second inning of this one. Yeah, that was big for these guys early on. definitely helped them get off onto the right foot. And a first pitch fast ball is in for a strike. Well, in this situation with runners on, you got to get ahead in the count so that you can dictate the rest of the at bat. Nice job right there. Swinging a ground ball. Frasier onto first in time. Two down. Up next for the Angels, centerielder Bryce Toddio. Here’s the center fielder. He’s someone that you might not describe as having elite level speed, but he can absolutely move and it is a factor in his game. Strike on the inside corner. Boo. This guy’s definitely a plus runner, but what I love about him is that he goes all out every single time. Never takes a break. It’s guys like that, even though they don’t have the elite speed, the fact that they’re consistent with it, they make moves on the base pads. [Applause] That misses the zone. Yeah, the count one and two. And that’s outside. The guy at the plate could recognize Slider out of the hand. Didn’t stay in the tunnel very long in terms of depth and perception. He knew right away it was an off speed pitch. Sway and a miss. Struck him out. That ends the inning and they limit the damage. Three runs for him here and they move ahead. 678 do in the bottom of the sixth. Angels five and the Royals two. Back here at Kaufman Stadium, John Shampi with Chris Singleton in the booth. And leading off the bottom of the sixth, Randall Gritic. That one’s upstairs. Ball one. Action in the Angels bullpen. Luis Garcia getting ready to go. Stevenson getting cranked up as well. [Music] And he takes a strike. swing and a miss as he was out front that time. And now the count is even [Music] ripped into right field. Base hit. So, a runner aboard to start the inning. Love how he became a really tough out with two strikes right there. Showed a willingness to drive that pitch the opposite way. Didn’t get jumpy. Didn’t try to pull the ball. He let it get deep, took the barrel right to it, and then extended through the swing for the line drive base hit. So up now for Kansas City, Adam Frasier. Slider right there. Now, this team is definitely looking for a big swing of the bat right here, try to close that gap. But, you know, at the very least, if you could find a way to manufacture that run from first, it feels like it’s really important to getting back into this ball game. The 01. That’s a hit. Throw back in quickly. First and second now with nobody out. Two consecutive base hits for these guys here. Just a simple ground ball the other way. They’ve had eyes on it. Man, sometimes that’s all you need to do. Just let the ball travel, put the ball in play, and just hope it finds a hole. And maybe they’ve got something going here. Trying to get back into this one. Nick Loftton digs in now. and takes low for ball one inside. line drive and this might be trouble around third. One runs in. Rudder around third in to score from first and they trail by one. But when you fall behind in the count, you’ve got to come into the zone and then guys have a better chance of hitting the ball hard like he did right there. Kyle Isbel steps in for the Royals. Just missed. [Applause] And another ball. When the skipper calls down to the bullpen, he’s expecting the guy to come in and get outs. So far, not getting what he was hoping for. and a big swing and a miss [Music] with the go ahead run at the plate here in the bottom of the six. Two-1 pitch is in there and the count is even. Ground ball up the middle throws to first in time. One away. Bottom of the six. Now batting. Now the Angels manager is out of the dugout and he’ll make a move to the pen. Number 56 done for the night and he leaves in a one-run game. New pitcher coming on. We’ll be back in a minute. Jose Soraniano into the game. Still a lot of game left and this game could go either way. So, this is a big opportunity for him to get some important outs and try to help carry this lead into the later innings. Here’s the third baseman, Mike El Garcia, 0 for three in this one. This is the classic manufacturing a run situation. A runner at third, less than two outs, and a golden opportunity to bring him home. in the dirt. Wow, that’s a great job behind the dish there. That’s a little bit low. Homeplayed umpire is trying to tighten things up a little bit. Swing and a ground ball and that one gets through into center field. The run scores from third and it’s an RBI single. It’s 55. Well, patience and discipline paid off right there as he got into an advantage count. Just kept it simple. Played pepper with the middle of the infield and took it back where it came from and there was just no one there to knock it down. One down. Next to hit, Bobby Whit Jr. He’s already homerred in this game. That one’s in there. That’s strike one. Garcia leads off first with one away. [Applause] Well, he didn’t like those first two pitches. Now in an O2 hole. He’s going to have to battle. Hope he gets a mistake. 0 and two now. Swings through it and that’s a strike out. And Chris, that’s a way to neutralize his speed by keeping him off base. And the defense breathes a sigh of relief because he puts pressure on everyone if he can put the ball in play. But that’s how you do it. Keep him off balance, get him out of there, and deal with the next guy. So, two down now. And here is Vinnie Pasquantino. Now moved to first. That’s off the inside corner. One and0. That clips the corner. The one-1 is fouled off. The kick and the pitch. Runner goes. That one lifted to left. Lugo has a beat on it. And that is the inning. So they get three and draw even. Seventh inning coming up. We’re all tied up 55. Welcome back. We’re in the seventh. We have a new pitcher on the mound, John Shriber, coming on to face a righty here. And he’s been fantastic against him this year. His numbers in those matchups are very good. Now it’s going to be Zack Neto. Sing. You talk about a guy that has all the skills. The range is really good, but the arm just stands out and he makes all the plays. Yeah, the first offering a fast ball for a strike. And because of that big power arm, he’s able to play a little bit deeper, make throws from the outfield grass all the way across the diamond and still get a pretty good runner. That’s impressive. And a foul ball now to short. Whit sends it to first and they get the leadoff hitter in the seventh. Now batting second base Luis Reano. Now the number two hitter Luis Reano. Well, both sides equally as strong, so not a good time to try to turn him around with a relief pitcher and put him on the other side of the plate. Out to short, throws to first and a couple of quick outs. Now batting third baseman Yan Mona and now Yan Mona Shriber 31 years old and they went out and made a trade for him last season just missed doublebarreled action in the bullpen. Taylor Clark appears to be getting loose. Airsig also getting ready. And that’s in there for a strike. And now it’s even. Two down, nobody on here in the top half of inning number seven. Swings through that one for strike two. He’s been great in this one. Eye hand coordination just failed him a little bit right there. Cut on and miss. struck him out and good work there as he gets a one two three. So they make short work of him there midway in inning number seven and it’s time to stretch. We’re all tied up 55. Bottom of the seventh. Now it’ll be the cleanup hitter for the Royals. Salvador Perez. Kansas City delivers a pitch in for a strike at 95 and ball one. And there’s a hit. A leadoff single and the go ahead run is aboard. [Applause] That’s about as textbook as it gets. Got his stride and load out of the way early. He stayed inside that ball and squared it up out front. Man, that was like he was in the cage hitting off a te. Mikey, the second MLB YZ steps in. First pitch doesn’t find the zone. Right side and it’s just fouled. That was close. Here comes the pitch. Runner breaks for second. This one chopped on the ground but fouled. in the dirt and an excellent job keeping it right there. [Applause] This one bashed to left center on its way and that one’s out of here. his 16th homer of the year. And now they’re out in front. It’s 75. That one just sounded different. And it might have been the loudest moment yet. Man, my ears are ringing. I can feel that swing from the booth. [Applause] It’s like he’s playing whiffle ball up there. And that’s typically not the easiest way to hit a home run. To the slight opposite field into the gap. Man, making it look easy, that’s for sure. Now, the Angels manager is out of the dugout and he’ll make a move to the pan. Jos Soraniano won’t go any further tonight. Two-run ball game as he heads for the dugout. And we’ll be back with a new pitcher. Chase Silith gets the call from the pen. And we all know about his slider. It’s just filthy, man. And one of the better ones in the game, I’d say. Spin rate’s very high and it just breaks a ton. [Music] Now it’s the right fielder, Randall Gritic. That clips the zone. That’s strike one. Nobody on, nobody out. A pair of runs across in the inning here. The bottom of the seventh. That one is upstairs. Swing and a miss. One and two. One ball, two strength. Got him swinging. Now Adam Frasier steps in for the Royals. One for three. And the first pitch misses for ball one. Still only one out here in the inning. swing and a ball lifted in the air. Lugo pulls it down and he makes the catch and there’s two down now batting leftielder. And next up for the Royals, Nick Loftton. And first offering is fouled off. Two out. Space is empty. Ground ball left side and it goes just fouled. Gets a piece and it stays 0 and two. Also really good at bat. What I like about this guy, his bat stays in the zone for a long time. and gives him the ability to foul off tough pitches. Slider got him for strike three, but two come across to score in the inning, courtesy of this two-run homer. It’s now 75. It’s Major League Baseball on the show. Welcome back and a new arm on the mound to start the eighth. Taylor Clark. Well, good luck against this guy. He’s been extremely tough to hit this year. His numbers are excellent. Taylor Clark. And now Joe Adell, the hitter, Joe Adell. Swinging a miss at a slider. Meanwhile, activity in the bullpen. Carlos Estz preparing to come on if needed. And he couldn’t hold back. He’s rung up on strikes. Oh, big power guy right there and generating so much bat speed. It’s hard to bring that to a halt once you’ve committed. They tried to check the swing, just couldn’t do it. Oh, in the box now. No balls in a strike. Foul ball. One down, base is empty. Spoils a two strike pitch. And he’ll see another and it’s fouled off. They’ll do it again. [Music] Royals. Strike three. And that’s two in a row. chance to strike out the side. Now, you talk about the benefits, the advantages of relievers who can come in and get the swing and miss, whether it’s inherited runners or maybe a little jam that they get into themselves knowing that they can miss the bat. Tell you what, that’s huge and can change the ball game. Taylor in the box with two gone and takes a look at a called strike. And that’s downstairs. And it’s a ball and a strike. And the slider just misses. The Royals leading by two. And we’re in the top of the eighth. He swings, floats it into left and foul ball. And now it’s filled up. Matthew Lugo waiting in the on deck circle. They can get him up. He’d represent the tying run. So critical pitch right here. Two down. Nobody on the other way. Pasquentino steps on the bag and it’s a one, two, three inning. Angels go quietly there and they’re down seven to five. Back now, new pitcher on the mound as we roll into the bottom of the eighth, Andrew Chaffen. He’s certainly been one of their better relief pitchers this season. The numbers are really solid, so they feel great about handing the ball over to him. And to the plate for Kansas City, Kyle Isel, you talk about elite defensive players, especially in the middle of the diamond, and this guy is at the top of the list. Pitch misses and that’s ball one. And you played behind guys and they loved having your speed out there defensively. One of the things that we talk about is how much pitchers enjoy having those elite defenders behind them. That one sizzling on its way through to the outfield. had a good start to the inning. Now batting Mikel Garcia now at the plate. Garcia. Fast in for a strike. It’s 0 and one. Hugan. The one thing about that is speed never goes in a slump and defense shouldn’t either. Hitting wise you can struggle. You can lose your mechanics. But the thing that you can do consistently every single game, runner on the go and it’s fouled away. And Chris, beyond the fact that he’s so incredible defensively, he also can swing the stick out to short, finds his way through base hit and out to a board. Here’s the shortstop at the play. Bobby Wit Jr. He’s already homered here in this one. And that’s through there for a strike. Going one. Blind drive. That’s a base hit into right field. The throw in. Not in time. He’s safe at the plate and they lead by three. First and second, no outs. Vinnie Pasquantino steps in for the Royals. Come on, Royals. just missed. [Music] Swings through that. All sliders so far in this at bat to get ahead in the count and clearly shows there was a game plan in mind for how to attack him in the box. No outs, runners at first and second. stays alive. Good job to fight that one off. And that’s downstairs and outside. Freezing. [Applause] Fights it off. You’ll see another [Music] swaying. Ball popped in the air and that’ll fall for a base hit. Rounds third headed for the plate. He’ll score and it’s an RBI single and they’re up by four. Manager out of the dugout now and it looks like we’ll see a change on the mound. Andrew Chaffen out of the game and the line not closed on him yet as he’s responsible for the runners on base. Back with a new pitcher after this. now pitching. So they bring on the veteran Luis Garcia and he’s done a great job keeping the ball in the park this year. The numbers stack up with some of the best in the game. Salvador Perez steps in for the Royals. That pitch gets the corner. That’s strike one. Runners at first and second and still nobody out here in the bottom half of the eighth inning. Little chopper rolls foul. on the ground right side and that’s just foul. Fights that one away and the count remains 0 and2 with the lead runner at second. Pasquantino at first with no outs. One ball in the dirt. Blocked one and two now. And that’s down and away. [Applause] The 2-2. Here’s a high-fly ball out to center under it. Brings it in and there’s one down. Now batting designated hitter Mike Ymski. Mike Yremsky will hit next. Tap foul at the plate. One out. Runners at first and second. That one ran inside. Almost got him. And a ball in two strikes. Gets under and pops it up. And the infield fly is called. Up next for the Royals, right fielder Randic. [Music] So up next, Randall Gritic. Right through there for a strike. Kansas City that finds the mark on the inside corner. This guy’s got a great feel for his breaking ball today. 0 and two now. That one just misses. And that’s awfully close. I don’t know how you take that. He’s seeing the ball out of the pitcher’s hand really well right now. line to right and that’ll be a base hit. Here comes Whit around third. He will score and the lead is up to five. Puts a run on the board and picks up an RBI. Nice job of driving that pitch the other way on a line. You know, hitters, they take so many reps in the cages, working on going to the opposite field, and it doesn’t always translate into the game, but right there it did, and he did it perfectly. Now it’s the second baseman, Adam Frasier. swinging a ground ball up the middle. Lays out, but he can’t squeeze it. No throw. And the bases are now loaded for the Royals. So, bases all loaded up. Nick Loftton steps in for the Royals. Fought off foul. Two outs. Bases are full. And a popup right side foul territory. Stretches out and hauls it in. So they get three runs in the inning, but they also leave the bases loaded through eight full. It’s the Royals 10 and the Halos five. We’re back. It’s the top of the ninth and there’s a new pitcher on the mound. Lucas, he doesn’t get a lot of strikeouts compared to other relievers, so he relies on getting that soft contact and the defense doing work behind him. They’ll have to be on their toes with him on the bump. Matthew Lugo getting ready to hit number 15. First pitch just misses. Movement in the bullpen. Noah Cameron appears to be getting ready and I’m sure he’s feeling some nerves. This would be his major league debut. Next offering is fouled back. Swang and a miss. Now one and two. Ooh, Baya, you got to remember to take the donut off the bat, partner. Swing and a pop off in foul ground. Garcia sizing this one up. Has room and he makes the catch. Now that first base, Oswald PZA Oswald PZA the next to hit. It’s interesting. He plays kind of a a power spot defensively, but runs pretty well. So, when you’re looking at that position, you’re not expecting someone that has maybe above average speed, but he does. That one’s in there. And that’s strike one. And I think that skill set really upgrades the position because when you have that kind of speed, it makes the whole team that much better. And he blows that one by him at 100. What about him playing another position on defense, one that would require a little more range? Absolutely. And I think if push came to shove where they had to make a a move during a game, it’d surprise a lot of people. You might even be able to put them in center field. So it’s their last chance in this one. And now the center fielder number 22 0 for three with two strikeouts and a ground out and first offering is fouled off. Two outs. Swinging a foul out of play. One strike away and that one misses up and in. And that’s ball one. Well, he missed badly with that 02 fast ball. Hitter has to understand probably wants to try to put him away with that pitch. So, got to stay ready for it. Not close with that one. Now two and two. hit to right and that should do it. And that’ll do it. The Royals slug their way to a win in this one. I don’t care if you’re a top team or you’re a middle of the pack team. Every ball club wants to be dominant at home. Winning a game like this just helps to boost the confidence and makes you look forward to coming out again for the next one. and your final 10 to five for Chris Singleton and our entire outstanding crew here at MLB the show. I’m John Shami saying so long
