All Signs Point To THIS…
All signs point to this Padres’s fans. I’m not going to try and be too doom and gloom on this episode, but we have to talk about a healthy dose of realism with Michael King and the situation going on and what Mike Schil just said about the Padres’s ace. Guess can you call someone an ace when they’ve haven’t had 20 starts in a season? I don’t know. Let’s get all Let’s get to all of that. Thank you very much for tuning in to another episode of Padres’s Digest. I’m Christian Patterson, one of the two hosts on here who always like to remind you at the beginning of these videos that if you want to comment on anything this video related, happy to have a dialogue about that. Or if there’s something else that you want to see a video on, drop a comment. And if you want to hit the subscribe button, it would be much appreciated. But I try not to stress about it. My parents can’t even figure out how to hit the subscribe button on YouTube. So why do I got to worry about any of you guys hitting it? Let’s talk about some San Diego Padres’s baseball. I want to talk about this fine gentleman right here. You may have forgotten him. His name is Michael King. He plays baseball allegedly for the San Diego Padres’s. And after a lengthy shoulder nerve injury issue, he came back for a stint and then left again with a knee issue. Now, the numbers are fantastic. That is why I bring him up. That’s why I give him any degree of focus and attention right now. Because if this was somebody else who had, you know, if this was a three and six and 20 starts, we’d be like, “Yeah, whatever.” Like, “Okay, great. We got another serviceable dude back.” But this guy can be a very good baseball player, but he’s left with a knee injury. We covered about a week ago now, depending on when you’re watching this, that he had a rehab simul I I see I stopped myself even from calling it a rehab start. He had a rehab controlled simulated game out in Fort Wayne and all reports there were that the to the mound or from the mound to the plate delivery from Michael King was fantastic that the problem was moving left right the reactionary of like oh there’s a bunt or I got to cover first or backing up bases or stuff like that. So they were holding him back from saying okay like we’re going to give any sort of progression of like oh rehab start Tuesday and then uh like then there was no concrete plan but it was things are progressing in the couple of days since then. Mike Schult has now been asked again about Michael King because Padres’s don’t have much else to talk about right now. Here’s the quote. I’ll read it for you for those of you. As always, I apologize if you are watching this on a phone and these this text is too small. I uh am here to do the voice over. Michael King is quote King is around the corner, but I don’t know what the depth of Michael looks like, what he’s going to be able to give us or win. But like I said, we’ll figure it out. I’m confident in that. Holy word salad, Batman. that meant that means both everything and nothing to me kind of in the same package and where I say it means nothing is that the literal sense of here is saying that he’s close but I I don’t know how close he is but like I said we’ll figure I he’s confident that we’ll figure it out like okay that means literally nothing but to me in the same sense that does kind of mean everything because the Padres’s have under 20 games left in the regular season. And as of as of right now, the Padres’s are still hanging in there, the wild card standings are still favoring the Padres’s. And as I like to now play every time we come on here, if the season ended today, where would we be? The Padres’s, I can show it to you. um they would be five seed on the road playing the cups. So all of this matters because that would be a situation where if the season ended today, we would like to know if we’re on the road fighting for our playoff lives in Chicago, do we have Michael King to go or not? What this does tell me though at the same time for me the it tells me everything is that it tells me everything is not knowing not having a timeline and saying this BSE word salad sort of thing of like ah like he’s close but I don’t know how much of it like to me that says everything that says we’re going to get him for the playoffs but we’re not even going to we’re going to get a mystery bag of Michael King for the playoffs and I no longer longer have confidence that we are going to get these numbers when we return. I don’t want to be a Michael King hater. This is not me saying that ah King is cooked and whatnot. I just don’t think that based off of if a guy has pitched so little that it’s not really like even a qualifying stat uh year on the on the number of innings and starts for major league record books of sorts that do do you know like is that enough of a sample size to really know especially when the reason that he has not been pitching has been injuries. So, a guy with a couple of injury stints where the numbers are fantastic, but the recent sample size is came back for a blip, ultimately did all of this like four plus months ago and now has some left right mobility, agility issues. And not that a team’s going to exploit that and be like, let’s all bunt, but you just know that you can’t completely eliminate that from the game. So even if we get this like ah he comes back and has one nice little four innings like oh look his arm is good you just you can’t fully eliminate the hey Michael King just throw just throw pitches just throw pitches don’t do anything else defensively with that position don’t walk the wrong way don’t step the wrong way don’t you just like it’s human nature to even if you coach that into a guy you can’t fully eliminate the left right so I’m going to go out on a limb and say that like this to me points to we’re probably not going to get him back during during the regular season or at most for one start just to sort of proof of life, proof of concept. But we’re going to get him in the playoffs. So that to me now is the question of how confident are you about Michael King for the this season here and now. Where do you slot him in a say we are going into a playoff situation. Where do you slot him? He’s here. He he shows up. He’s available. Raises hand. Hey, I’m here. Count me in. Do you give him automatically that one slot? Do you put Paveta at that one slot? Do you put Darvish at that one slot? You can, to me, you could make a case for any one of those guys. You can make a case for Darvish because a he’s the veteran and yeah, he hasn’t looked fantastic, but he knows how to handle the moment and like big like big crowd, big light. Okay, cool. You can go with Paveta because he’s been the best for the long he’s having the best season of his career. You can go with king because I remind you these numbers. I don’t know though who you give it to because I don’t I don’t I don’t know where my confidence is. And that’s uh maybe my own version of a words Mike a Mike Schult word salad to you guys of saying oh I talk all this six minutes and seven minutes into the show about Michael King and I don’t really know but I’m to me what I am seeing is that Michael King is now a he is going to be a complete mystery in the playoffs but we’re going to have access to him. So I’m curious how much faith how much stock we want to put in. That being said, I am also looking at this has like if I’m trying to because some of you guys say I come on here and be super negative Nancy all the time. And if I’m trying to say, okay, look, I’ll turn a corner. I’ll be more positive. Pete, um, Michael King was going to be a free agent next year. There are there is a a team uh personal option that both like both could pick up for 15 million. 42 appearances as a Padre since being traded here in 2023. 17 and 11 with a sub3 erra 116 whip. That’s really good. And if this chalks up to just being a random year where like he just Yeah. Maybe he did really wake up weird and slept weird and he tweaked his his shoulder something like that and then a little knee thing, but he really is that guy and he is that dude. I would be curious to know if this limited amount of a season softens the market for him and brings him back for one more year at 15 million, which then to me kind of opens up a little window there of like do the Padres’s then have maybe not like a ton of money, but maybe a little money to go get a five star. I don’t know. just it to me the trying to look at the silver lining is he is still a really good pitcher and maybe this is just a freak year where he just didn’t he just didn’t like it just didn’t come together but he still is who he is because ultimately none of these are there like core health injury issues to the health of a pitch I that’s just kind of where my brain is at the good the positive but the the long and the short of it is that Mike Schil basically gave us a word salad nonsensical thing that to me pushes his ex his expectations of Michael King into the playoffs so let me know what you think Drop a comment, hit the subscribe button, and until next time, keep the faith Potter race fans. We’ll make it.

Sounds like his knee is wrecked and probably needed surgery but they thought he could get by without it. Or else his knee is shot for good. Like Tony Gwynn in his later years was always dealing with a bad knee that kept swelling up as a permanent thing. But he didn't have to jump off a pitching mound to make plays, and as we've seen already, it can cause knee injuries. If King came back for one year, he doesn't deserve 15 million Not even 10. He's been getting paid going on a full year now for doing nothing. He still owes us a season's worth of work.
Money off the books. King is done
With pads.
