Are Expectations Too LOW with JJ McCarthy and the Minnesota Vikings? | RAW REAL RANT

What’s going on? Jerome’s raw real audio rant again. If only there was some name for a podcast about sports that is just audio and is transmitted via FM airwaves. I don’t know. I don’t know. But so the rant today is about JJ McCarthy and I woke up fe feeling dangerous. Actually had a good night’s sleep anyways. But with McCarthy, all the talking points right now are, and we’re we’re guilty of this, too. Certainly, it’s like all he has to do is keep the Ferrari on the road. Hands at 10 and two, and you’re good to go, right? But what if it’s going to be more than that, right? Now, not to put any unwar pressure on McCarthy, but to put unwor pressure on him. What if it’s more than just a game manager situation, right? And you we talked about this because all the Vikings have to do to be successful here. McCarthy take care of the take care of the rock, hand off the ball, some accurate balls off a play action, which he’s already very good at. Saw saw that at Michigan. But what if again, it might not be this year. Well, at least not the beginning of this year. maybe later in the season and and of course going into subsequent years because we we Vikings fans don’t understand like we McCarthy and Kevin McConnell and Darasaw and Jefferson long-term baby. It almost puts a little quiver in your in your voice. Um oh yes, but what what if McCarthy is more than just the proverbial game manager? H because why not? Because Dan Orlovski, he of the 11 yard end zones and he who just like just decide to trash Florida’s defense for no reason. But he he talked about JJ McCarthy that the expectations are skyhigh and it’s true. It’s absolutely true. The highest drafted quarterback in team history, number 10. And McCarthy of Michigan, yes, he he has this reputation of doing whatever the team needs to win. All right. His his numbers weren’t huge. Wasn’t a volume passer. wasn’t running like a gimmicky air raid uh you know slash sprint. Well, air raid isn’t gimmicky. Yeah. Uh but you you know what I mean? Like a Tennessee Oregon stat padding offense. He wasn’t in that. Right. But when they needed a play on third down in the red zone, he made the play. Made the throw. Right. This a little bit different than a fullback playing quarterback. And also you look at what jumping Jim Harbaugh has done to Justin Herbert and the Chargers. Like I mean Herbert I still I still like Herbert. And I know that Herbert’s a pretty polarizing quarterback, but I I still have him as a top 10, top 12ish quarterback and basically the Chargers have taken the air out of the football and they’re going to be a running team. Now, losing Rashan Slater, watching his backside as well as having Quinton Johnson as one of your top receivers, that will certainly change the calculus a little bit, but they’ve definitely changed like like Herbert before was airing it out and now it just sort of you could I guess you could call him a bit of a game manager, sure, but that’s what happens under Jim Harbaugh, which is ironic because he he was a quarterback in the day. But with McCarthy, it’s not like McCarthy is deficient in any physical attributes, right? Just honestly look at it as as objectively as possible. You know, take the name off the jersey, block uh you know, block out or pixelate the face, right? Uh uh change the voice. We have the ransom. No. But McCarthy, he’s mobile, agile, hostile, and everything that you’ve seen, whether preeason, whether training camp, dude has a hose for an arm. So, like arm strength, arm talent isn’t going to be that big of a deal. I I know that a big deal is made of his, you know, second highest velocity throw at the combine. And we we’ve we’ve beaten this to death where arm strength isn’t just about, you know, throwing a football over the mountains. It’s about, hey, can you sling it on third down on a slant and get the ball over the linebacker in front of the safety? Can you do that? Do you have the arm strength to do that? And yes, absolutely. JJ McCarthy checks all these boxes. And then from the neck up, mentally, work ethic wise, like he’s second to none. All right, so that’s not going to be an issue either. So instead of just, hey, let’s hope JJ McCarthy doesn’t screw things up. Hey, how about JJ McCarthy becomes our Josh Allen? How about JJ McCarthy becomes our superstar elite future franchise quarterback? How about that? That’s what you drafted him for. Oh, but he was drafted. No, no, no. There’s not not conversation, right? because I honestly think that everything is is coming up Milhouse for McCarthy and it’s more than just hey just manage the game and we’ll be fine. No, maybe to start the season. Sure. May maybe as we’re rolling along into the by-week getting your feet wet that that’s fine. But what if JJ McCarthy with Kevin Okonnell who has a propensity for going downtown Julie Brown like he loves throwing the ball vertically uh and especially if you get a viable running game which the Vikings should have this season. You can do so many more things downfield especially off of play action which Kevin McConnell loves and JJ McCarthy is very adept at. So threatening every single blade of grass, chucking it deep to Addison who’s a deep ball merchant, Justin Jefferson, Jaylen Speedy Naylor. You got Thelen in the red zone as well. And Hawinson having a revenge on his mind, looking for a career year. I honestly think that as the season progresses, you’re going to see JJ McCarthy get even more dangerous, right? And, you know, the first couple games, you know, let’s definitely give him some leeway. First time starting quarterback in the league. Uh there’s going to be some growing pains. It’s going to be Helter Skelter a little bit herkyjerky, a little bit uneven. That’s fine. But towards the end of the season and then going forward, I I I think you may see JJ McCarthy differently. I I think you may see JJ McCarthy as he is him him. He’s that mfer. He is that dude who’s just going to slang it and he ceases to be a quarterback that you can win a Super Bowl with and becomes a quarterback you can win a Super Bowl because of because we talked about that’s the pivot that you need to have if you’re you’re going from a rookie uh uh a quarterback on his rookie deal to a quarterback that you pay 40 45 50 million per year for. All right, because you know the cap is still sort of the cap, right? And eventually you have to backfill your rooster uh with cheaper talent, whether it’s rookies, whether it’s cheaper veterans. And your quarterback has to cover up a lot of stink. Yeah. Your quarter, a really good quarterback is like a a a cologne, a draar. Uh it really just covers up all that bo and all that stuff, right? But right now, the Vikings have the freaking Avengers and they have a really solid three kind of four-year window where McCarthy has three years remaining on his rookie deal and then the fifthear option. So technically four even though the fifth year option uh it’s going to be a pretty decent chunk, but you have the time now to spend everywhere else just build a freaking super team around McCarthy. And guess what? We we’ll give him a year with the training wheels on. Training wheels may come off mid-season, late season, right, when when football starts mattering the most. And I feel like mentality wise, he’s not going to get too high. He’s not going to get too low. He’s going to learn from his mistakes. And physically, there’s no limitations, honestly, other than that. Whoa, we wish that he was 6’5 and and 240. Well, he’s not, right? But frame-wise, we’ll be able to hold up in the National Football League. uh arm talentwise, mentalitywise, mobilitywise, everything is there. All right, so I I honestly cannot wait and I I feel like there will be an adjusting of expectations pretty early in the season with JJ McCarthy because again, right now it’s just like take care of the football and do this and it’s going to change. It’s going to change, man. I think the Vikings are on the precipice of a very, very special season. And I can’t wait to share it with all of you. All the Jeromes out there. It’s going to be great. It’s going to be beautiful, man. Anyways, that’s it. That’s it. Raw real rant. JJ McCarthy change the game. Let us know your thoughts. Comment section. You guys are the best. You know what to do. Skull production value.

  1. too much comparison to Ponder by some pundits as opposed to other Vikings 1st round picks of Tommy Kramer, Daunte Culpepper, Teddy Bridgewater…..
we've hit on 3 of 4, historically speaking.

had injury not occurred, the results would be even better.

  2. His floor is high due to elite leadership and his clearly demonstrated ability to distribute the football on time and to the correct read. JJM already sees the field like an elite veteran QB. His athleticism, arm strength, intelligence and work ethic have him with an uncapped ceiling. I think the sky is the limit.

  3. Moderate expectations early on is correct, allow him the space to make some mistakes and grow. Soon, and I mean this year, I expect he will start winning games, not because he didn't make the mistake, but because he made the plays that won the game. He will carry this team more than once this season.

  4. I absolutely agree with you that no one has any idea how good he will be going forward. And I think your timeline is just right. Slow start, as he becomes accustomed to the NFL, but by the end of the year he will be awesome!

  5. exactly what I been saying. they saying if he's even average, if he's just not bad…. but what if he's actually good. what if he makes things happen? SKOL gonna roll. bars. SKOL GONNA ROLL a new thing???

  6. Health and consistency will be his biggest challenges…but he's got a tank being built around him that could negate that. Bottom line: Vikes are soooo unpredictable at this point and that could be our biggest weapon in the beginning

  7. Expectations for him are reasonably high, I think because of his pedigree. Still, he hasn't proven anything in the NFL, so a lot of people are just reserved in having expectations. I don't think they're too low, I think it's more like we're being underestimated, and I think the fans who know ball see that this isn't just any other team with any other first year QB.

  8. I agree 100% & have been preaching that two things are almost guaranteed:
    (a) McCarthy will have his ups & downs early on, however,
    (b) by the time we get to mid-November, McCarthy will have used his passion for the game, intelligence, attention to detail, 'coachability', competitive nature & good physical skills to become a very good NFL QB.
So, given what I expect in terms of McCarthy's growth, plus the abundant talent surrounding McCarthy & Flores' defence, the Vikes will be (..please excuse the cliché..) a team that no-one will want to face in the post-season, regardless of where the Vikes are seeded in the NFC playoffs.
It WILL be a fun year for Vikings fans! SKOL!

  9. I’m not going to get too hyped, or too critical when it comes to #9. I hope to be pleasantly surprised, but I’m more worried about KOC calling too many pass plays. I hope we run like crazy, play action, and open up the playbook if we’re leading. Hopefully the upgrade of talent will cancel out the desire for KOC to get “cute” in the red zone… I believe in #9, drafted him to my fantasy team, but I’m starting Josh Allen this week, because I don’t want to think about #9 having to throw a lot for us to win…

  10. 9-8 miss playoffs barley. Or lose 1st round of playoffs if they make it. Don't get your hope up guys they aren't winning the superbowl

  11. As Vikings fans, our brain is predetermined to feel that we can't have nice things. But we must do away with loser's lament. It's just as likely that McCarthy becomes the next Pat Mahomes as it is that he's a bust.

  12. This season many teams have made improvements. Every game might be a battle to win. JJ will likely do well, but look at the Cowboys. Who would have expected them to do as well as they did? If passes were caught, they win the game. It will be fun to see how it all shakes out by mid-season, and injuries might decide a lot of games…

  13. I want to see J.J. McCarthy change up his cadence when he doesn't have to go silent count because of the crowd noise, just to keep the defensive fronts honest an not jumping the snap counts as well as carry out play action fakes to hold the LB's when pasing, look off the safeties and be able to get to his 3rd an 4th read options when necessary. I know all this is assuming the the O-line is getting it's job done. I love kid calm demeanor and attitude he doesn't get to high or to low or rattled, his meditation keeps him focused and grounded!

  14. The guy just needs NFL experience more than anything, I don't expect him to light it up this season but I am still of the belief that him sitting out and watching Darnold and having that season to soak everything in and see how a successful team operates is going to be beneficial to his development.
