Pat Murphy sounds off on Brandon Woodruff struggles in Milwaukee Brewers lose to Blue Jays 8-4

saying just some uncharacteristic mistakes defensively and on the bases. What did you what did you think of the Yeah, I mean mistakes today. You can’t play you can’t play uh defense like that and base run like that and we can’t play like that and win. Um especially against a team so good as the as the Blue Jays. So um chalk it up to we haven’t played like that in a while but uh very un uncar characteristic but unacceptable. I mean, certainly unacceptable. Um, that that’s not us. And uh but but it was today. So, was it surprising to see it kind of pile up? Yeah, it was. It was it was more surprising like, well, where’s our focus now? The guys I can make excuses all you want, but the bottom line is, yeah, we’ve played 18 games in 17 days. Here’s the thing. It’s unacceptable. It doesn’t matter. Oh, there might be more of a reason. What? Okay. But it’s unacceptable. So, I’ll go with that. Murphy clawed way back in. It was 4-4 going in the fifth inning. It’s kind of that tipping point there. Bases loaded, nobody out. Um, didn’t score. Hit a ball right at the pitcher. That happens. If that gets through, we score a run. Um, big strike out and a really good pitch from a reliever. Just came in the game. and then um you know I don’t know what the next guy did but didn’t get him in. So yeah, that happens. I mean it doesn’t happen to us too often but it’s happened to other teams a lot. So in the bottom of that inning then um those two fly balls where Jackson and Isaac kind of converge and those are catchable fly balls, aren’t they? Would you in your opinion? Yeah, you have to be the outfield was very tough today. You watched their right fielder not catch a ball. Um the outfield were very tough today and it’s where you’re positioned. So you have to kind of see that. You have to see where they’re positioned and you know we’ll look into that but you know we can’t start questioning whether those guys are good players and maybe they could have maybe they could have caught him. I don’t know. I didn’t look at it again but I just felt like the defense in general wasn’t in sync. You know how about Woody? You know Woody was very good. Woody was very good. He deserved better. He can’t. Nobody can pitch with with with that defense and nobody can pitch with things, you know, he had a couple balls just falling in front of the outfielders that, you know, because of this field and the big hop and all that kind of stuff, it messes with him a little bit. The turf messes with him a little uh as far as bounces in the outfield. So, yeah, I thought Woody did a really nice job. The lead off walk, there was a couple things that weren’t typical of him, but I thought he did a really nice job. He should have been out of the first inning. So now you’re now you’re uh cruising a little bit and um might have been different game, but I thought he threw the ball well. Pat, your offense has been very prolific kind of all season, but 45 home runs in August. What does that added pop sort of add to this week? Yeah, I mean I think I think home runs um are thrown, you know what I mean? So I think that you got to get pitches to hit and be ready to hit those pitches. And usually you’ve worked yourself into account or had yourself ready for that pitch. So I think that they’re capable. That doesn’t mean, you know, sometimes they don’t give you a pitch to hit out. So you have to do what you do in that pitch to win that pitch to get the next pitch, you know. So that’s what it comes down to. But the surge of it and then all of a sudden we didn’t teach people how to hit with power, you know. I mean, it just it’s in a lot of guys. It’s they got to get the pitches to do it with. to see Jackson. Everything was just a little bit off, I would say, on both sides early on in the ball game. Miscues on both sides, but very costly for the Brewers because I ultimately I think it cost them the game and it cost Brandon Woodruff possibly a win. He took a loss here and there was a lot of things out of his control that could have gone uh the other way. Yep, indeed. So, it was uh Woody and Shers are out on the hill and it uh didn’t turn out to be the big game that we all thought it was going to be. The Brewers scored the first two runs of the game in the first, but when Toronto came to bat, uh, they got right back at it as well. So, a lot of back and forth in this one as we take a look at the first runs. Uh, two unearned runs coming across as Lucas’s two RBI double ties the game up. Yeah, this is after a hit by pitch and there was a couple of strikeouts, but the error, I mean, it’s a double play that should have happened and they didn’t get any outs. And so, what happens when you give a good team a chance? They take advantage of it. And then later on, second inning after a walk to Miles Straw, which that guy has been amazing in this series. George Springer hits a double, but then they overthrow the cut off man and Springer’s able to get the third. Didn’t cost anything, but still a miscue. And then out later on in that fifth inning, three runs scored in this inning, but that big double by Tyler Heinman with one out, it kind of hits right in front of uh center field and left field. Do you think Collins Cheerio, somebody’s going to have that ball, but again, very, very weird jumps in the outfield from both teams in this game? Yeah, I think today you saw Cheerio second game back in center field. Still has to get readjusted out there after missing a month. Monister out at shortstop. He’s been out there for the last couple of weeks and uh just you need those type of communications up the middle and uh it didn’t uh really come into fruition for the Brewers here in this one. Now, the Brewers had plenty of miscues uh in this game, as Tim mentioned, a missed opportunity to double play. That’s just the start of what happens. There were some out in the field uh and there were also a lot of base running mistakes. But we’ll go back to that bottom of the first and that uh we all thought it was going to be a double play. Yeah, everybody had too much maple syrup last night. It’s what it looked like. This right here, we looked at it several times. Terrain just did not see Monasterio there and kind of cuts in front of him uh up against the wall. Collins. That’s a tough play, but uh throwing all the way home and then unable to get the guy trying to go to third. This right here, Jackson Cheerio should be running to second base to tag on this ball. He does it late. Does not end up on third. Uh probably cost a run, but then Contrarus Contrarus kind of erases this one by hitting this double, but he thought it was a homer, so he’s kind of just jogging. Didn’t think much of it. Ends up being a single because Barger plays it so well off the wall. So, he should have been on second. Then there’s a a fly out. Uh, probably should have been a sack fly. Contrarus is on third. Well, Contreras trying to make something out of nothing. Ends up trying to go to third and gets gunned down at third. So, yeah, all the way across the board. Miscues. This was a straight up steal by Terrain. Monisterio decides, well, maybe I can get home. He does not, but he was not in position to do so. He’s had a cut of the grass at third and tries to make up with the wheels. just not enough foot juice to be able to do it. Pat Murphy was upset. Threw his hat. Uh this is in front of the entire dugout. You know, hey, you’re not going to play baseball this way. And I mean, I’m surprised. I’m not a big coh college rah type guy, but I’d have been all for Pat Murphy pulling the guys in about the fourth, fifth inning and going, “This is unacceptable. I don’t care what you’re, you know, what you are in the standings or what you’ve done in this series. We’re not going to do this.” And uh he didn’t have to do that. Maybe he made an example out of Monisterio, but there’s several uh learning curve moments here where sometimes you can only do what you can do. And if you’re thinking in the right landscape, you can figure it out. But the Brewers were just not there early on in the game. Yep, indeed. Uh just an uncharacteristic day. And yet the Brewers still had a lot of opportunities to get some more runs on the board and prevent runs from going on the board uh against Toronto here in this one. So, a strange game to be sure, but I’ll tell you what, the the positive, one of the silver linings out of this one. Jackson Cheerio again just returns yesterday after missing a month at that hamstring injury. Two hits and a and a home run in yesterday’s game. Four more hits today, two singles and two doubles. That’s six hits in just the two games are Menard’s big money moment. Yeah, six for nine. This is absurd what this kid can do. You know what? If you want to talk about, you know, miscues, that single that we just showed, uh, he was actually probably out had they challenged it, later scored. So, that worked in the Brewers favor. And then the Suns out, blunders out is the Sunball in right field. Uh, later on, gets a single in the fifth leading off. And then, bam, that big double in the ninth inning with two outs. I mean, he he’s a spark that this team needs. Three extra base hits in this series, just two games, three runs, an RBI, and you’re like, what can this kid not do? Pat Murphy, you’d be like, “Well, this kid can’t tag from second to third on a deep fly ball to center.” But, um, no, that the game got really fast for a lot of guys and I think they were trying to make some stuff happen, but when they just play the game the right way, uh, this team’s almost unbeatable. And if you look back, I mean, why are you trying to make something happen getting to, you know, uh, getting out when Cheerios at the plate? You know, there’s a lot of little things that could have gone the Brewers way. And again, just let the game dictate what you do. And uh you’re probably going to hear some of that from Pat Murphy in the post game. Yeah, I’m I’m sure you will for sure. Uh the starting pitchers uh today, Woody and Max Scherzer on the hill. A quick look at the unsuccessful run that they had here in this game. Woody gives up 10 hits. Not as sharp, you know, that he wanted to be. Uh eight runs, five of those were earned for Brandon Woodruff here. So he goes four and a third. Sherzer just four innings, gave up a couple of home runs. The home runs have been his nemesis so far uh in his short tenure in this season which has been shortened by injuries given up 23 home runs already. So Brendan Woodruff gets the loss. Max Scherzer a no decision here in this one. Nance out of the bullpen gets the win for Toronto. Brewer is 85.

  1. So it's cool to scream at Monastero in the dugout but make excuses for the 4 or 5 other players who had mental lapses and bone headed plays. Got it.

Today was the first day all year that I was disappointed in Murph.

It's YOUR job to make sure the team is focused, Pat.
